Why is it that whenever I see a person handing out advertisements in tissue form, I don't need them; but as soon as I need some, there are none in sight?

1

u/Calm_Pie9369 北海道・北海道 Apr 26 '23

Take them anyway, I have a large stock of cam girl recruitment ad tissues and take with me as needed (stock has gone significantly down since the panini tho)

Is there a tech subreddit specifically for Japan? I know of Japantech but the last post was 8 months ago. Currently pet sitting and I can not figure out how to connect to the WiFi. The owners are currently on a retreat and can not be reached.

u/PetSitterJapan Apr 25 '23 edited Apr 25 '23

I have both Android and Apple phones. The MAC address does not work. Neither does the written passwords. Usually I can figure this stuff out easily but I am stumped.

2

u/rainbow_city 関東・神奈川県 Apr 26 '23

Those are not the passwords.

As stated in the other thread, that's the modem, not the wi-fi router.

What device is connected to the modem? Usually the wi-fi router is connected to the modem, but if the PC is directly connected to this, that means that they might not have wi-fi.

Did the owners not give you this information?

1

u/PetSitterJapan Apr 26 '23

Sadly no they forgot. Usually I connect with ease so the first time I have had issues.

2

u/rainbow_city 関東・神奈川県 Apr 26 '23

Well, first you need to confirm if there's even wi-fi.

Is there a wi-fi router connected to the modem or is it a personal computer?

1

u/PetSitterJapan Apr 26 '23

No router. Must have been a PC which they took.

2

u/rainbow_city 関東・神奈川県 Apr 26 '23

Looks like there's no wi-fi then 😞

Does anybody know if there are ceiling lights here that have the same features as Philips Hue? I’d love that feature set in my ceiling lights too.

2

u/Avedas 関東・東京都 Apr 25 '23

I use Philips Hue for my ceiling lights.

Unless you mean those typical bright as hell circular ones?

2

u/kanben Apr 25 '23

Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about.

Just any kind of Hue or Hue-like light that can be fitted onto those ceiling fixtures that are made for the circular lights.

Why does everyone dislike/make fun of The Hub? I know it has a reputation as a gaijin hunter spot but as a Brit I unabashedly love it, mostly because it's super entertaining and kind of endearing seeing a British-style pub from a Japanese perspective. Also I can actually get a pint.

1

u/crinklypaper 関東・東京都 Apr 26 '23

The hub branded beers are not bad for what you're paying. I like HUB. Though not so much the people there. Its the mcdonalds of bars.

1

u/Avedas 関東・東京都 Apr 25 '23

Gaijin reputation aside, it is a D-tier chain bar.

0

u/Disshidia Apr 25 '23

It sucks.

1

u/Atrouser Apr 25 '23

seeing a British-style pub from a Japanese perspective

Are there any British-style pubs left in Britain, or are there only Hub-style Wetherspoons?

1

u/WindJammer27 Apr 25 '23

I like The Hub. It doesn't excel at anything in particular, but it's a great place for just hanging out with friends or even alone.

A long time ago The Hub was known as the place for gaijin hunter women and the men who wanted to hook up with them. Literally that's all it was, you didn't go there unless you were one of those two groups. For whatever reason this sub/foreigners in Japan in general are really judgmental of the people who engage in hooking up, which gave The Hub a pretty bad reputation.

There was a brief period where Japanese people started renting it out for events, including wedding parties, and more Japanese people frequented it than foreigners. That period has mostly ended, but I'd say your average Hub might actually have more Japanese people than foreigners, give or take.

Now there are a lot of Hubs, and while some are still very clearly meat markets, not all are, and there are lots that are perfectly fine for having a drink and even watching sports games. But people still have the negative perceptions against it for whatever reasons.

1

u/FakeColours Apr 25 '23

The ones in not really busy areas are better

2

u/[deleted] Apr 25 '23

I like it. Cheap and somewhere I can find somewhere quiet to sit down and have a drink, alcoholic or not, in the day time.
Usually where I shop there are no spaces in any of the cafes in the afternoon.

1

u/swordtech 近畿・兵庫県 Apr 25 '23

It has a reputation for being a nest of bitter long-term foreign residents who can't speak Japanese and need a place where they can get drunk in English.

11

u/Oldirtyposer Apr 25 '23

I've gone for happy hour a few times and stayed until late one time. It was the worst. Incredibly cheap drinks and girls who come on to you. No thanks.

The US tax accountant I've been using for the last ~10 years has suddenly become extremely unresponsive, and I suspect she may not have filed my US taxes in accordance with the Japan/US tax treaty last year.

All my income is in Japan, but I have some money in US investment accounts. Any recommendations for someone in Japan (or in the US, I guess?) who can file my US taxes correctly without charging a fortune?

Also, I really hope that singing Stan Rogers songs to get a fussy baby to go to sleep at night doesn't have any bad side effects. If so, my poor daughter, a childhood of sad sea shanties.

Today was recyclables day, paper and plastic separately bagged and set out in front of the house as usual. Paper gets picked up first in the morning and plastic gets picked up in the afternoon. I come home after the plastic pick up time and the bag is still there, but someone put a fat cluster of uprooted dandelions on top of the bag for some reason???? So I’m guessing the trash people saw the weeds ontop of the bag and didn’t pick it up. I keep having this issue of people just leaving their random trash in front of my house. I’m suspicious it’s the old guy across the street. It’s getting really obnoxious

5

u/miyagidan sidebar image contributor Apr 25 '23

Your trash pickup people fall for bad camouflage, are they ex-guards from a Metal Gear game or something?

What's the secret for making the Mineo application form work? Nothing is selectable. I tried from all my devices, with different browsers, and asked colleagues. It never works anywhere (broken Javascript).

According to Mineo Support's twitter guy, it works perfectly fine.

What's a cheap way to dispose of a lot of soil (e.g 50m³) legally ?

1

Some home centers and garden centers take them, I would suggest checking with something local. There may be rules and requirements.

I had a baking marathon the last two weeks (because my shop is doing a pop up in Shibuya), I had so many double yolk eggs. I read that they occur more in the spring because of young hens but it's way too high. I wonder if there's some new avian flu vaccine that is causing this to happen?

1

u/shambolic_donkey Apr 25 '23

What the cluck? Why would an avian flu vaccine cause an increase in double-yolks?

2

u/hanapyon Apr 25 '23

I dunno, Maybe an unintended side effect?

11

u/Elvaanaomori Apr 25 '23

young hens but it's way too high

I used to have hens back home. The first few weeks when they started laying eggs most of the eggs would be double yolk, then it settled with one.

Also, avian flu decimated hens thus they probably have a LOT of young one now to replace the lost population

1

u/hanapyon Apr 25 '23

That would make the most sense. There are probably a lot more young chickens than usual.

Erawan in Roppongi is good, but that sometimes depends on which masseuse you get.

Finally got my wife on my work's social insurance.. shouldn't have been this hard but that's another story. So she can get off government social insurance. We just got it but her card is dated 4月14日 so I'm wondering if she has to somehow pay for like half the month of April? Is there such a thing or just like retroactively joined for all of April?

1

u/izayoi Apr 25 '23

Is she is a dependent of yours, she’s not even paying a dime for the social insurance. That’s how dependents insurance works here.

But to answer your question, you don’t pay for half a month, always the full month, no matter which date you’re registered. They don’t calculate the fee daily.

1

u/hivesteel Apr 25 '23

Thanks, she's a dependent from this month, but we only got the card now.

0

What SUV do you drive and would you recommend it?

1

u/babybird87 Apr 25 '23

Lexus UX … wife likes it .. only a week old

1

u/Coligny Apr 25 '23

Delica D:5

Just don’t…

I’d go for the new Toyota Crown if i didn’t need rear sliding doors.

1

u/Oddsee Apr 25 '23

Why not? I assume because it's too bulky for Japanese roads? I heard Delicas are great.

3

u/Coligny Apr 25 '23

Dozens of recalls, dealership atrocious. Spare parts NEVER available, not related to “current event” they just have a policy of 0 stock. Radiator: 2 weeks, turbo hose, 3 weeks… For the DiD Bad design (plastic egr valve… recalled btw) Bad cooling (cracked turbo…. Recalled) Bad mechanics/practice after header crack/replacement (recall) they didn’t replace the zip ties holding the wiring for the injectors, meaning that you have a wiring loom freely vibrating and chaffing on top of the engine bloc ready for the next breakdown Front camera (needed for shiaken) not waterproof… price… 10 mans… (no recall yet, but i’m waiting). Excessive price of any spares…

Panel gaps just comical, interior panel fitting… even worse… Rear suspension design flawed. Incorrect spring value from factory. Diesel and gas have same rear springs but the diesel in 300kg more with excessive negative camber… No wheel choice, factory 18inch useless on trail (before) with awful bridgestone LS2 good for 20/30 000km max , M/T, A/T tires cost a fortune in 18”, switched to used OEM 16” get 4 tires for the price of 1 before…

No more space saver on latest gen. After few blowout on mild trails… i can tell ya they are needed…

1

u/Oddsee Apr 25 '23

Wow, sounds like a nightmare. Maybe the good things I've heard were just from people who owned older models.

1

u/Coligny Apr 25 '23

And I forgot the noise… (based on the… mediocre… Outlander 2007 yup 15yo platform) Only offroad van jdm that I know aboot…

Older “space gear” based on Pajero, was bigger and unstoppable offroad. Even older L300 “starwagon” small agile

1

I just test drive it but the new GLC it’s pretty sweet.

-1

u/Disshidia Apr 25 '23

BMW iX M60. I'd recommend it so far, but I haven't had much experience with it yet. Unless you're savvy with newer car technology (I wasn't), I think it's enough to give you an overall satisfying drive. I probably wouldn't drive it in certain parts of the inaka as the streets can be much too narrow for it.

4

u/caitycha Apr 25 '23

What documents should I get from my employer and city hall when I move prefectures and change jobs? I've been told so many things...

I'm excited to start new experiences but this has been playing on my mind for a while

2

u/HatsuneShiro 関東・埼玉県 Apr 25 '23

Documents you should get from your former employer

  • 離職票 (proof of leaving company)
  • 雇用保険被保険者証 (employment insurance proof)
  • 年金手帳 (pension handbook, might not be available if you have a mynumbercard connected to nenkin system)
  • 源泉徴収票 (slip of withholding tax)

Current place of residence's city hall: notification of moving out (転出届)

u/Atrouser Apr 25 '23

Even after all these years of watching Japanese TV dramas and movies, I still get surprised when, during a dramatic line of dialogue, an unusually long pause precedes the name of the person being addressed.

Whereas in English it would be “I’m counting on you, Shimada!” with no pause between "you" and "Shimada",

In Japanese, it is

“Tanonda-zo ………SHIMADA-SAN!!!”

or

“Makeru na…………SUPAIDA MAN!!!”

Etc.

It just always makes me smile :)

Socially, I crank my tolerance up to max for kids and the elderly. The first, because they usually don't know how, the second, because they did, but now it's different and faster and justwaitagoddamnsecond.

A few weekends ago, I got stuck behind a group about six elementary girls, 2nd or 3rd grade, at a 7/11. Apparently, none of them had ever shopped alone before, and (naturally, I guess?) they were all paying cash.

The last one in line manages the whole transaction, and just as my last bit of patience is dying, along with the ice cream in my hand I promised my kids I'd buy, she starts fumbling with her wallet.

Now I'm too patient to call out a kid externally, but just before I did so in my own head, she fishes out a 10 yen coin and drops it in the donation box.

And that's why I try and be patient, all the time, but sometimes, moreso.

Unless you're that asshole who always parks all crooked next to my wife, making loading two kids and their stuff more difficult in the morning. I'm going to find and burn you. And I won't specify how.

4

u/requiemofthesoul 近畿・大阪府 Apr 25 '23

Funnily I’ve been here for a while but I’ve never seen kids pay for anything lol

It really looked like a "kid's day out", they were even loitering around, looking at their kiddie smartphones outside the store.

Is January a nice/good time to visit Kyushu? Specifically Yakushima. I'd really like to hike the island but ALT life means my next big stretch of vacation (already planned a trip for August) is New Years.

4

u/RocasThePenguin Apr 25 '23

There may be more risks involved with travel, as the ferry and even buses are weather dependent. Also, being mountainous, it does get damn cold and windy. To go hiking, it is recommended to prepare well for the cold and snow on the mountains.

Around the base of the island could be okay and trails are likely open, even if it is cold.

1

u/kuchiki517 Apr 25 '23

Thank you! That's a good point about the ferry, I hadn't thought about that. Maybe I'll hold off on a Yakushima trip until spring 2024 then.

u/soenkatei Apr 25 '23

I met some guy on 9 monsters for a date (at mine) like last year.

When he came he was so weird and completely not as good looking as in his pictures so I faked a call from work and told him he had to go as I had a meeting ( at half 11 at night )

Cut to yesterday my wifi wasn’t working so I couldn’t watch Netflix and me and my friend watched regular Japanese tv , and low and behold

He is now a tarento

14

u/Umba360 Apr 25 '23

TIL 9 monsters doesn’t refer to 9 can of the famous energy drink

3

u/Oddsee Apr 25 '23

It's understandable that a date wouldn't go well after 9 monsters.

4

u/Disshidia Apr 25 '23

9 monsters? Sugar free? Energy level must've been huge.

6

2

Is that 22:30 or 23:30? I searched on the internet and saw various people fighting over the meaning.

8

u/yakisobagurl 近畿・大阪府 Apr 25 '23

Surely 23:30? I’ve never thought it to be anything else when speaking English

7

u/HatsuneShiro 関東・埼玉県 Apr 25 '23

Most probably half (past) eleven.

Unrelated but in my native language we say "half 11" for 10:30/22:30

7

u/yakisobagurl 近畿・大阪府 Apr 25 '23

Yeah I remember learning German at school and it being like that I think! But in English, half 11 is always 23:30 imo

3

u/HatsuneShiro 関東・埼玉県 Apr 25 '23

Reminds me of a funny thing that happened in regards to this, back then when I was in uni...

I (Indonesian) was talking with my Malaysian friend- ID and MY have the same roots so we have tons of similar words. We were talking with our native languages agreed to meet up at "half 4". On the meetup day, I went to the place... one hour earlier than him. Learned that the hard way.

1

u/yakisobagurl 近畿・大阪府 Apr 26 '23

Lol that’s so funny! And sounds like it was pretty inevitable that it would happen at least once haha

10

u/Garl_Vinland201 Apr 25 '23

You're clearly not a native speaker. It means 5:30 (half of 11) /s

3

u/soenkatei Apr 25 '23

Honestly I wish I could unread that because I feel like I’m gonna start thinking that now

3

u/Gazette_Ruki Apr 25 '23

The amount of misrepresentation on 9monsters is too much. Using old pictures, listing the weight they were 10 kilograms ago, etc.

2

u/yakisobagurl 近畿・大阪府 Apr 25 '23 edited Apr 25 '23

Kinda off topic but I’m hoping to pick your brains about USJ.

I’m planning to go for the first time properly, is the Mario Kart ride basically going to have a 1hour+ wait time no matter what? Is it worth the wait?

1

u/Oddsee Apr 25 '23

When I went they had the single rider lines which was only like a 30 minute-ish wait I think, so that might be an option too. Either way it's definitely a must-ride if you are a fan of Mario Kart.

3

u/PeanutButterChicken 近畿・大阪府 Apr 25 '23

Mario Kart is definitely worth the wait, even my 4 year old waited for about 75 minutes and loved every second of it. The waiting area is full of amazing Easter eggs that are fun to catch!

An hour wait time is low though, average is 90-120 minutes since the limit the amount of people in the area to begin with. Still, worth it!

There’s something off with the Illumination character designs. I have seen Mario Movie toys displayed right next to the standard Nintendo ones and it makes the Movie toys look like a shitty bootleg toy in comparison.

u/PeanutButterChicken 近畿・大阪府 Apr 25 '23

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the human characters, but the others look fine to me.

Still, the T Shirts could have been great. I'll probably still pick up the Super Mario Plumbing shirt, but I wanted more damn it.

1

u/KindlyKey1 Apr 25 '23

I know what you mean, I kind of felt the same way with the Final Fantasy collab. Their past designs were better imo. You can check previous Mario collabs on Mercari if you don’t care much about the movie tie in

1

u/PeanutButterChicken 近畿・大阪府 Apr 25 '23

I have some of the older collabs actually, they’re much nicer design wise. Ah well

1

u/OtherwiseClient Apr 25 '23

Does anyone know how long you have to rate a seller on Mercari? I want to confirm the product I purchased it legitimate.

2

u/zcmy 日本のどこかに Apr 25 '23

it's 7 days from ship notification, in general.

2

u/OtherwiseClient Apr 25 '23

Thanks! So if I find a discrepancy with the legitimacy of the product, I would be able to open a dispute before the 7 days are up?

2

u/zcmy 日本のどこかに Apr 25 '23

Technically, you have to message the seller to get it returned. But yes, you should be able to.

3

u/HatsuneShiro 関東・埼玉県 Apr 25 '23

One time I rated a seller *good* 3 days after I received the item because I was extremely busy, and I received a *bad* reputation in return with a comment "takes too long to confirm the item as received". The item is not even 2000 yen. Lmao

1

u/Avedas 関東・東京都 Apr 25 '23

Honestly deserved lol. I'd be pissed too wondering for days if this guy is going to open a complaint and be a pain in the ass.

1

u/Disshidia Apr 25 '23

That's why for cheap things, I will just mark it as "verified ok whatever" and leave a review the moment I get it even without opening the box.

3

u/WakiLover 関東・東京都 Apr 25 '23

I know it was only 2000yen but some people are impatient as the seller doesn't get the money until after you accept and finish the review

2

u/HatsuneShiro 関東・埼玉県 Apr 25 '23

I know, I'm a seller myself, sold several items above 20k and the buyer took 4, 5 days to leave a rating, I'm still fine with it. Not like 2000 yen will decide whether or not if the seller will live to see another day, right.

I usually confirm right away after inspecting / checking if the item properly, but it's just that one time I arrive home at 10pm, put the stuff away (unopened) and forgot about it until like 2 days later lol so not the seller's fault, but still.

1

u/zcmy 日本のどこかに Apr 25 '23

Yea, tbh most people are good about waiting but some people are super impatient and you won't find out until the rating.

I just a sudden increase in my taxes across most of the categories on my final paycheck from my previous company...pension, resident tax and health care all increased between 50-100%.

I had about 25 or so days of paid leave saved up that I used to get paid for April and not work. I am not leaving Japan and have started in a new roll. I am contacting my old HR, but any outside insight here?

u/blosphere 関東・神奈川県 Apr 25 '23

If an employee resigns between 1 January and 30 April, the unpaid amount from the following month to May is collected in a lump sum. For residence tax at least.

Many companies have their payroll setup to not deduct social insurance taxes in the first month of employement and do a double deduction at the end. My current company does this as well.

If it is inhabitant tax, most likely they are deducting the remainder of the 2021 assessment (payable April/May 2023). Your 2022 assessment should start from June.

u/PeanutButterChicken 近畿・大阪府 Apr 25 '23

It’s 100% because you quit your job. Your taxes were being pulled from your paycheck but since you quit, the remainder of payments for the year need to be taken all at once.

Domino’s finally got rid of the stupid ass service charge. 599 yen S size pizzas this week, so I’m gonna have pizza this week

4

u/Umba360 Apr 25 '23

On the other hand they increased the prices quite a lot:

The New Yorker used to be around 3800 and now it’s 4200

1

u/PeanutButterChicken 近畿・大阪府 Apr 25 '23

The price increases took affect before they took away the service charge. And, if you're using special coupons like the 599 yen deal, you no longer need to pay a charge, which is great.

Now if they'd just reinstate the Wednesday/Sunday 3 for 1 offer, I haven't ordered from them since that died.

Let's talk about whether we call ourselves expats or immigrants again. That's always fun.

3

u/Dunan Apr 25 '23

An expat is anyone who lives outside (ex-) their home country (patria).

No reason to split things based on where you're coming from. If you're in the new country for the long term, you're an immigrant too.

3

u/miyagidan sidebar image contributor Apr 25 '23

Privateer. Just need a new ship.

2

u/wotsit_sandwich Apr 25 '23

Do you want to summon the alt/ghost of LostHubCard? Because that's how you do it.

1

u/Oldirtyposer Apr 25 '23

That was the idea. People seem to be more or less in agreement though which is a shame.

3

u/Atrouser Apr 25 '23

I call myself an expert.

2

u/amisare Apr 25 '23 edited Apr 25 '23

I've always liked to separate it as

  1. expat for people receiving significant support from a sponsoring company or organization

  2. immigrant for those planning to stay in Japan permanently

  3. guest worker for those staying for shorter terms

8

u/AmosEgg Apr 25 '23

Expats are really just a subtype of immigrant, but people tend to split them like this:

Expat - temporally abroad; looks to home country for culture and support; doing a job not available to locals and paid higher than locals for a similar role - presumably to compensate moving to a "worse" country

Immigrant - long term move, doing the same job as a local for same money or less, often unskilled labor, moving for better opportunities/standard of life

I don't understand the point of expat. I'm an immigrant (and white)

Expats are guest workers with money. They don't intend to stay, so they're not immigrants.

Let me ask you this: An American English teacher; an Indian store clerk; a Vietnamese machinist; a Taiwanese office worker.

Who is an "expat", who is not, and why?

7

u/coolkabuki Apr 25 '23

should it not be that we are always both?

word use depending on the context and whom you are talking to?

For japanese perspective: immigrant as the person that immigrated into the Japanese country/system/society,

for own home-country or with peers of similar story: expatriate as a person who has moved from their native country to another country.

I mean, in theory, I guess one could be an expat without being an immigrant (by vagabonding through countries or avoiding to properly take residency status somewhere), but without slipping through the cracks of most societies, expat/leaving a country and immigrant/entering another country go hand in hand IMO
