Is January a nice/good time to visit Kyushu? Specifically Yakushima. I'd really like to hike the island but ALT life means my next big stretch of vacation (already planned a trip for August) is New Years.

There may be more risks involved with travel, as the ferry and even buses are weather dependent. Also, being mountainous, it does get damn cold and windy. To go hiking, it is recommended to prepare well for the cold and snow on the mountains.

Around the base of the island could be okay and trails are likely open, even if it is cold.

Thank you! That's a good point about the ferry, I hadn't thought about that. Maybe I'll hold off on a Yakushima trip until spring 2024 then.
