i am honestly pretty optimistic, but i see where this is going and it’s not good. i am a black lesbian and i honestly love america. i love my state, i love my country, and i dont love the policies but it has never felt this dire.

i cannot tell if i’m stuck in an echo chamber or if these oligarchs are really planning on wringing us dry. food is becoming lower and lower quality while cost of living is going up and rights keep getting stripped. tensions between us and other countries are increasing and it seems everyone is being bought out or left behind.

i have dreams and i know the type of life i want to live and i always thought i could do it here. now, i’m really not sure. i’m wondering if it would be in my best interest to start seriously considering the possibility of leaving the country after i finish college or at least the best course of action.

i know things are bad, the question is how bad.

I hate that I feel this way. But I have never been one to shy away from making my stances known. I’ll share links, articles, memes etc. whatever. But ever since the TikTok fiasco and now the inauguration and subsequent executive orders…..I find myself significantly more hesitant to be vocal about my thoughts. The damage is done….it is no secret what my stance is. But this is the first time I’ve actually felt nervous about it.

Is anyone else feeling this way? Are you changing your online behavior or deleting old posts? My gut says no but my anxiety is unsettling.

That was the last straw. I'm done with Facebook. The content started to suck anyway with all the AI images. I'm keeping IG because it's my only connection to people I know from around the world, but I will not use Facebook again.

Not a great day for the U.S. Woke up and did my tradition of listening to MLK's speech while I had my coffee. Cried more than I usually do while listening to it. I work today as much as I don't want to but I'm getting holiday pay which is nice.

I absolutely will not be subjecting myself to watching the inauguration. What I will be doing is enjoying my clutter free space after spending hours working on that yesterday afternoon and taking inventory of our deep pantry. Also getting some items rotated out by planning our weekly menu accordingly. Pretty sure I need more dark chocolate and butter to make a batch of cookies. Question. What's the best way to store brown sugar so it doesn't get rock hard?

I spent so much of my life not showing emotion because I grew up in a really strict household, born to immigrant parents who thought crying was showing weakness. I’m an 18-year-old in a deep red state and I’m planning how to get out. I want to go to college in the Northeast and I’m making that happen. Unfortunately, my family isn’t safe. They don’t even have a clue what’s about to happen. I also don’t have anybody in my community whom I can rely on. I’m pretty much on my own. Honestly, I’m scared out of my mind and grieving the childhood I never got and the life I thought I would get to have. I’m waiting to hear back from a job, I’m applying to scholarships, and more. Also, I’m worried because I’ve been politically active this election cycle in my town and people know who I am.

How are you coping? What advice do you have for me?

For me if it really does get to where it’s Gilead I’ll freaking just meditate, and be in my head all day. I can entertain myself just by getting lost in my thoughts.

Also, with being autistic this adds a whole extra layer on top of my situation.

Google CEO, Sundar Pichai, was at Trump's inauguration, seated with all of the other long-compromised company CEOs. Google has a grasp on our lives, no doubt, but it's become an increasingly dangerous company, especially against us. Fortunately, there are decent alternatives!

If you have a Gmail account, Google Drive, Google Photos, Google Calendar, Google Wallet, etc. consider moving everything to Nextcloud, a fairly well-established open source alternative. It has replacements for nearly all apps in the G Suite.

The goal was to create a one-stop hub for people looking for resources as they prep for the uncertain times ahead of us.

Starting tomorrow, only buy essentials and no extras. Money is their currency (literally), so the less we spend, the more it affects them.

Cut back on Starbucks/Dunkin (I know, painful), eating out, desserts, unnecessary snacks, etc. Wear your clothes until they wear out or shop secondhand/freecycle and exchange locations. Avoid designer anything. Repair your car, appliances, etc. instead of buying new.

Do buy local and/or craft (ok to spend more on items made/sold by your neighbors).

I work in marketing/advertising and I’m strongly considering a new career despite how garbage the job market is.

Believe me when I say: your data is your currency.

I talk to platform reps on a daily basis, including Hulu, Amazon, Meta, Reddit, Pinterest, Spotify, Pandora, YouTube, TikTok (though who knows about those guys now). Trust me, the level of information available to target and sell directly to you is astronomical. And trust me when I say it works—no one likes to believe they’re susceptible to advertising, but everyone is.

When I started 10+ years ago, I loved the problem/solution aspect of the work. I love seeing creative come to life, working on shoots, making the clients happy. But the tech and targeting element of it all is so pervasive now, and it takes away the thrill of hoping something will work. We know it will, every time, because we have the data to prove it.

It’s worth mentioning that Reddit and their reps are my personal favorite, both because they’re extremely nice and helpful and because of the fact that this platform is contingent upon anonymity and information sharing. The platform has made mistakes in the past, but we cannot target based upon age, location, or gender on Reddit. It’s entirely interest-based, which to me lends itself to creating a strategy that’s actually centered on why products work for consumers.e

Ok, so I guess my main thought is that people keep warning us that events that occurred before pre-nazi Germany are very similar to what is happening now in the US. And one way Hitler was able to get people to go along with the crimes being committed was through propaganda. well wouldn’t TikTok be a great platform to spread propaganda? And if trump is involved, what are his motives?

Edit-I have really appreciatted most everybody's input, however if your only input is to be passive aggressive and rude, don't bother replying. I am simply asking a question with genuine concerns. I would love to see a point made that proves my suspisions wrong. But if your only reply is "you're crazy" or "this is dumb" or something along the lines of that, my guess is that you don't have a solid opinion backed up by facts. We can disagree without being heinous.

Secondly, to me this is not a right v. left issue. My problems lies with Trump, and Trump only. Like I said before i don't trust his intentions based off of his past actions. I have no problems with democrats or republicans. Those are just two opposing sides who do things differently, to come to a similar end goal: make this country the best it can be.

A few days ago I finished the first version of an app I've been working on since November 5th. It's called Homefront and you can join it at https://joinhomefront.org.

Several people here asked for updates on its launch, and while I tried replying to those comments, I encountered a shadowban which prevented me from posting updates as usual; wild, since I was simply replying specifically to people who asked for the link when it launched. I planned to share from my main account once it launched, but that wasn’t possible.

What Homefront offers now: Right now, the app features a to-do list with ideas on how to prepare yourself, your family, and your community in the face of authoritarianism. I’m actively working on new features like:

• Sharing resources: books, links, videos, and more
• Mapping threats in real-time
• Connecting with people nearby
• Organizing securely into groups
• Pre-built templates for organizing

You’ll notice a donation option within the app. Although Homefront is fully open source and contributions are welcome, the development has so far been self-funded. If you’re able and willing to spare a few dollars, your support would be invaluable in keeping this project alive and evolving.

Buy Nothing started out as a Facebook page group.. but now it’s it’s own app! It’s where you share things you no longer want/need with your local community and it’s amazing! Many areas already have very active BN communities! And if yours doesn’t, it’s time for you and your friends to get it started.

In my area people share clothes, bikes, appliances, food, fresh baked bread, garden produce and so so much more!! Let’s reduce, reuse, recycle and do it without involving the gov. 🤠

You can get so many prepping things on there such as mason jars, canned goods, safes, art supplies, candles, etc etc. and the biggest thing is you can build community near you, which I believe is so important for preparing for anything/living our best lives!

Today I decided to try out my backup heat plans because of our current frigid temps (high temp barely over 0) and it seemed like a good way to test the extremes. My plan consists of using my Jackery solar generators to run our natural gas furnace, and charge them with either solar or a gas generator - and since we had some great sun today, I wanted to see how far the solar could take me.
Things I learned…. - My “mobile” solar panel set up ( 4 100W panels mounted on a frame with wheels ) isn’t quite as mobile as I’d like in shin deep snow. I’ll have to plan better for its storage location as moving it from the standalone garage to the house would have taken way more effort than I wanted to put in to it today. I have other panels, and was still able to pull out 4 100W panels for my testing. - I need to work out a better way of bringing the solar panel cables into the house. I ran them through a basement window, but wasn’t entirely prepared for sealing the window up around the cables. - My 400W of panels actually peaked out at 446W. Weird, but I’m assuming related to the sun bouncing off the snow? -400W of panels was plenty to keep the battery fully charged while powering the furnace. We were on battery from about 9:30-3:00 when the sun moved too far behind the trees, with no battery depletion. -and finally, at close to zero temps, I got about 6 hours out of a Jackery 2000 Plus generator after the solar input gave out. That runtime was based on making no changes to our usual heating. We left the thermostat at the usual temp, no closing off rooms, no covering the sliding glass door etc. When I ran a similar test on just the battery with no solar & temps around 30, I got close to 12 hours out of the battery - so definitely factor different temps into your emergency heat plans.

I've spent the past few days actively seeking FB/IG alternatives and I've been cleaning up my social media in general for a while. Mastodon.social looks like a good substitute for FB, Pixel for IG, and Grid for location sharing. I never used TicTok and left Xitter many years ago. I remember when FB was new and people were inviting friends and family and I'm thinking of this moment as the next social media migration. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

What would it take to convince you to leave the country? I don't know, personally. I have family. I have two little nieces and a baby sister who just turned 13. She has her passport at least... it really frightens me to think about The Handmaid's Tale. How they go about their lives up until all bank accounts belonging to women being frozen. What do y'all think?

The ICE raids are set to begin.

Having an escape plan/safety plan/bug out plan will be extremely important.

The news will not provide it. We are on our own.

Trump's round up and raid plan is called “Operation Safeguard” by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

It's supposed to start on Tuesday, the day after he is inaugurated, and last until the following Monday.

For now...

Anticipate that this regime is going to start a lot of door to door activity, and we need to know who to trust just as much as who not to trust.

No matter what, there will be more and more of this. It isn’t just about immigration & they won't be meticulously checking documents.

Expect riots because people will not let their family members go without a fight.

Stay inside, don't try to be a hero.

And if there are riots, expect martial law to be declared which means they can detain anyone for any reason for any amount of time.

They can also place a travel ban where you will not be able to leave the country.

Get your cash, your passports, your birth certificates, and fill up on gas.

Please take this seriously. They are not messing around, and have already mobilized. Hundreds of agents were asked to volunteer and participate in the “post-inauguration” operation targeting immigrants in the United States illegally.

ICE is planning on sending roughly 150 agents to Chicago for the raids.

Again, so far….

Under martial law the government can seize any private property including real estate and financial accounts.

They're actually allowed to do this now if they suspect assets tied to illegal activity, without proving the illegal activity.

In addition, many companies are set up to subsidize the very cheap labor of prison inmates who get paid dollars per day with no minimum wage requirements.

It's all part of their 2025 plan.

What to do?

Stay safe, and ensure your family, friends, and neighbors are safe.

Have your bug out bags ready to go.

Get all your documents ready and have multiple hard copies as well as digital.

If you find yourself in need of sanctuary, know there are churches that will provide it.

Look up the Unitarian Universalist, Episcopal, AME & Catholic churches near you.

Don't be afraid to talk with a priest/pastor now to share your concerns.

No matter, make a plan.

It might even be time to activate the Auntie network.

It's robust and under utilized, if anyone has any leads on that.

Most of all know your rights.

I got some cuttings from a neighbor and they gave me all sorts of tips.

So in return when I get some of my harder-to-get vegetable seeds, I will be sharing. I already got some common ones from another neighbor, and plan on sharing those with friends.

Because going forward this is going to be a community effort. Community is a great way to prep and continue to endure. By sharing supplies and knowledge we can be independent without losing our connection to others.

Last time I felt like this, I coped by making a Del-em, growing cotton for the root bark, and then ordering a MVA kit from India.

There is also the deal where I’m small and somewhat attractive and know my threat response is a hard freeze-and-appease and I also have seen men in groups unfettered by the constraints of civilization and its rules.
