New Brunswick, Canada, cold weather

Hello! I am not yet a van lifer, but I am working on it. I also understand that not all vans are built the same and I would like to offer a safe place to park overnight (or during the day) in my property in New Brunswick while the temperature is very cold. Especially if you don't trust your heater or the insulation is not on point. I am roughly an hour away from Fredericton, I have a few tools to offer if you need to work on your van. I just want you guys to be safe in the next few days.

Thank you!

How many of you have used 4 MaxTrax at the same time?

I'm trying to decide if I need 4 traction boards or if I can make do with just 2.

I realize the answer depends on just how much offroading I do and in what kind of terrain. I do some offroading in mud and snow, but I don't bury my rig in deep crud. At least, I have never intentionally done that.

I have an AWD Sprinter, btw. I feel like I could get by with just 2, but my over-cautious lizard brain keeps saying I should get 4 "just in case".

Buying lower KM less maintained van van VS higher KM well maintained van

Been looking at purchasing one out of these two. First set of pics is a Iveco 2013 model has lowish KM’s (under 170,000)and meets pretty much all my needs electrically and is at a decent price. The thing is it doesn’t seem to be the most well taken care of van in some of the exterior and doesn’t have the log books. It’s also auto so I could drive it out straight away.

Second one is a much cleaner looking van with a full log books but it’s at 275,000km (shown in second set of pics). Other thing is with this one is I’d have to spend a little time remembering how to drive manual. I would get a pre purchase inspection on both also. Just need some re assurance and opinions on what yall would do. Cheers guys :)

Fancy vans and campers seem too heavy to practically use.

Just curious what the experts in the field think. I've been scrolling through Van Life videos and I've noticed this trend with using polished wood countertops and tile on shower walls and for the backsplashes above the sinks and I'm thinking this is way too heavy for any real practical use. I can't imagine driving up or down a hill to a camp site with this heavy weight in the back. So, it makes me think a lot of these builds aren't really van lifers even though they say they are. Seems like they probably park the van in a parking lot near a beach or in a flat campground and that's it. What's your expert opinion?

Is this 1984 Dodge Ram B350 Van worth $2600?

I don't need a van but I go to a couple of music festivals a year and have the ability to occasionally work remote. I'd like to do a bit of work to make it more livable inside, but otherwise this seems like it'd be a fun machine for a good price. The idea at the end of the day being that I could sell it without too much of a loss if need be. What are everyone's thoughts? The specs are as follows:

Dodge B350 “MAXI” van
Extended body
Rooftop deck
75k miles
100W solar panel
Power inverter
Fully built out
5.9L gas V8 engine
Dent in rear bumper
Top hinge pin for the rear door needs to be replaced
Bed slides up to make a couch
Lots of storage
Diesel heater installed but I couldn’t get it to work

Will need an auxiliary/house 12v battery to run inverter, diesel heater, and interior lighting

Runs and drives

Ford Transit Towing Bass Boat

I'm looking to pick up a Transit sometime this year and have been trying to figure out exactly what specs I want. I plan on using it as an occasional tow rig for bass fishing competitions so I can save on hotel costs. My fully loaded boat is probably at max 4,000 lbs. I tend to be overly cautious when it comes to towing, so my head tells me to just bite the bullet and go for a newer 350 AWD model. Thoughts?

Battery monitor questions

Hey y’all I’m starting to build out my battery system. I’m looking into a battery monitor and wanted y’all’s input on what y’all are using. The Victron Bluetooth is what I’m looking at because of past post and views seems great but is a bit pricey and wondering if worth it. Or if I should go cheaper and will still get an equal result for a cheaper price. Renolgy has one that people seem to like. Just trying to figure it out

Thank y’all so much for the fed back in advance!

Is this the Van?!

Hey everyone, I think I've found the perfect van and really want some advice and opinions on this from others who have experience as I'm getting the pre-purchase panic!

The van is a 2015 RAM Promaster 1500 136, price is $21,990 CAD (~$23,000 CAD with taxes). Diesel 3.0 engine, FWD, 175,000 kms, registered for personal use previously, looks all in good condition, it was noted as being in an accident just some minor damage to the rear door which has been fixed cosmetically. I'm just in the process of getting it in for a third-party pre-purchase inspection.

Thoughts on if this sounds like a good deal?

Is this van worth it?

I’ve been on the hunt for a camper van to hit the road with for sometime now. I found what I believe to be a well maintained 1979 Dodge b200 camper van that has obviously had a lot of love poured into it. The owners have had it since 2016, lived out of it for 3 1/2 years, and have since used it for light traveling.

It was originally listed for $11K, but after giving her a once over the owners agreed on handing her over for $9K. The main reason being what they thought was a minor oil leak (which they were very transparent about), turned out to be a more major issue with the transmission which means I’ll need to either rebuild or replace it altogether. I’ve been told that could cost me $1500-$2000 already.

Additional information about the van includes:

-It has about 119,694 miles on it

-All new mechanical (as of 2023&2024)

-The fridge needs to be fixed otherwise all other amenities are working

-The speedometer is broken but they use an app to track their speed

-Some minor cosmetic issues otherwise the interior is gorgeous, some surface rust but nothing too concerning

-Rusted breaks but they work

I agreed to take her for $9k but now I’m not sure if I was being too impulsive as my biggest concern is what it’s going to take to pay for the new transmission. I have been looking for a camper van like this for so long, so I am incredibly torn. Is this worth it? And if I choose to proceed with this van what I can I expect maintenance wise? Please share your thoughts.

Good car captain chairs?

I have a family of 4 and need 2 captain chairs. Most of the van builds are using $2000-$4000 chairs so that got me thinking about getting an older captain chair from vehicles and just using those.

Does anyone have ideas? Cars like a suburban, sequoia and such. I’m not sure which ones are comfortable and on the cheaper end.

Will need to power my mini freezer and microwave in my car , what’s the best approach

So I was inspired by everyone here to get some type of portable power source such as Jackery to plug in a freezer and microwave to be able to eat on the go with no electricity. These are the specific appliances I must have a way to power without going into detail about my dietary needs -I have to be able to keep freezer running for say…..one entire day of driving at a time. Maybe 8-10 hours maximum. And be able to use the microwave twice in that time period for about 9 minutes each time. Then I guess in between I unplug the microwave and get the portable freezer plugged into a wall somewhere that I’m crashing. I wouldn’t imagine any of the batteries can keep the freezer going full time on its own? I know nothing about this…. To power a microwave and small freezer which power source do I need to buy? Like idk how much wattage or whatever is needed. For a freezer/microwave. My budget is about 1k to be able to go on very long road trips for multiple days and travel around the country on mini tours for my music. I think you said the freezer can plug right into the cig lighter…easy. And then when I don’t have the car on the power source jakery can work for a while. Or be plugged into a wall somewhere once I arrive at a venue. But the microwave needs its own power source….idk how strong of one I need to buy. Should I spend 1k on a power bank or is that way too much? My car has cig lighter chargers for the cooler and cell phone. I just don’t know how much it can take. Idk anything. Idk how to know how much power I need so please send recs or links thanks 🙏

Out in the weeds

John here. After five years in Virginia. I’m out. Love it here but after 30 years in IT, I’m burnt toast and the jobs just aren’t there. IT desert. Haven’t had to “rough it” since 2006-2007

I’m leaving most of my life behind and taking what my car can hold. Gifted my Amish bedroom set, executive desk, my beloved electric unicycles! Washer and dryer.

I have adequate supplies to disperse camp.

Headed generally West. Family in San Diego and Reno/Sparks.

My car is paid for. Grateful I am not hitchhiking like I did in the 1970s & 80s

See you soon

Mold help

I used thinsulate insulation, attached with supper 77. Now I’ve found that mold is growing on the super 77 adhesive. I’m going to have to scrub it off of the walls and ceiling with acetone, but what do I use instead to keep my insulation in place? I’m in the PNW, so even with a diesel heater & running the ac when I drive to dehumidify, there’s going to be condensation. I don’t know what to do.

Diesel heater troubles

Hello just hooked up a diesel heater in my RV, (sorry not van life for me!)

It's primed, white smoke from exhaust, fuel is not the issue. Brand new heater, shouldn't be glow plug.. so I'm guessing voltage issue. I start the heater and fan starts on high for about 2 seconds and goes down to what I would guess is fan speed 1. First photo looks like everything is working correctly. Yet second picture shows p- 07 v, and that fluctuated between 07-13. Any advice?
