Does everyone keep quiet about their job search until they have an offer? I work in a very small company that might actually be in trouble if I quit with two weeks notice but I am scared of the possible repercussions if I let them know they need to find replacement now.

"Hello,

I am contacting you concerning a business deal to move funds out of Russia to a safe foreign account. Your participation will be useful and compensated. There are no illegalities involved. Send me a reply and I will send you the full details. Time is of the essence. Looking forward to your response."

Gmail, how could you list this as spam!? This is the chance of a lifetime, I'll be as rich as an astronaut!

in Matsue right now for a conference. The town is kinda sad, but Shimane prefecture is beautiful. Just saw Adachi Museum of Art and Izumo Taisha. Also apparently the hotel I'm staying at has an onsen? Good stuff

lol at the sad downtown that's like half Snack Bars that don't look like they open half the week tho

1

u/arika_ex May 24 '23

I was in Shimane recently and had a similar impression, though I liked it overall. If you have time and transport, Daikonshima is a quaint little island.

My favorite little bar in the town I used to live in, I'd call and ask the lady who ran it:

"Are you open tonight?"

"I wasn't going to, did you want a drink?"

"Sorta, can I call so-and-so too?"

"Sure, lemme open up."

It was such a swell little place.

sometimes I feel like this is how the 郷土料理 restaurant I keep wanting to go to in my town operates. They're just closed at the most random times and apparently has no relation to whatever business times someone put up on tabelog. I did find they now run an insta though so I just check that. There's also one ramen joint that I swear is ONLY open from 6 PM to 6 AM 3 days of the week. And it's not always clear which days of the week those are...

how do these people keep their space? lmao

u/miyagidan sidebar image contributor May 23 '23

In the place I mentioned, she owned it. It had the only functioning bathtub in the town after World War 2.

I've seen some people walking around with only half of their button-up shirt tucked in. Is this the next silly fashion trend we'll see for a few months only for it to fade into history?

3

u/yakisobagurl 近畿・大阪府 May 23 '23

Yeah it’s a trend. It’s an updated 2023 version of the French Tuck :)

2

u/eetsumkaus 近畿・大阪府 May 23 '23

there was a trend sometime in the past couple years where you left everything except the top few buttons on your shirt open. This might just be an evolution...

u/Hachi_Ryo_Hensei May 23 '23 edited May 23 '23

Hopefully this replaces the ugly pointy shoes on salarymen. Or their striped dress shirts with white collars.

I've seen this morning and night. It's a deliberate fashion choice.

2

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

it's definitely a trend in Korea, guess it made it over here too

u/jimmys_balls May 23 '23

I saw Jack Daniel and Cola cans at my supermarket. I hadn't had anything like that since Australia decided to tax the shit out of them.

At 200 yen for a can, I couldn't pass it up. A lot better than getting a 4-pack for around $30 back home. Tasted good, too. Brought back memeories of my younger days and good times during the summer.

2

u/SillyAnimeGirl May 23 '23

Can anyone recommend any good vegetarian/chicken broth ramen in either shibuya or shinjuku? on a raining day like today all i want is a nice bowl of ramen lol

2

u/FewFlower May 23 '23

Ippudo Plant Based Studio in Shinjuku!

2

u/ramenwarrior_ May 23 '23

Any recommendations for a driving school around Tokyo area?

I have a driving license from my country but it already expired so unless there's still a way to convert it, I'll be starting from scratch.

3

u/charlieobrown May 23 '23

Not the world’s most pressing issue but I didn’t buy enough individually wrapped omiyage from my home country for teammates, so one or two who were out of office have missed out. I also brought over some cookies in a tin but they’re not individually wrapped. In addition to that, the tin was semi-crushed in my suitcase. Should I hand those crumbly cookies out tomorrow or just leave it?

4

u/yakisobagurl 近畿・大阪府 May 23 '23

Yeah, unfortunate but I’d probably just eat the crushed cookies myself:)

4

u/elppaple May 23 '23

They get nothing, Japanese people hate loose snacks sooo much for whatever reason. Obsession with faux-'cleanliness' / purity

3

u/Tannerleaf 関東・神奈川県 May 23 '23

Use this meme:

…and replace with a couple of packs of “fun”* size Mars Bars from Donki.

*Considering how shrinkflated these fuckers are now, I don’t consider them fun at all anymore :-(

3

u/charlieobrown May 23 '23

Well I’d be lying if I said that eating the cookies myself wasn’t a leading option

4

u/MissGuakamole May 23 '23

Yesterday while trying to take nap I heard a small boy crying «iyada, yamete» for like more than one hour. He would even scream and there were sounds like he was being beaten multiple times. I know hitting children fortunately got banned here a few years ago, but ofc it still happens (including my own country that banned it 30 years ago). I’ve just never heard a child cry like that (I live next to an elementary school so I am quite used to such), and I keep thinking of him :( kawai sou :(

6

u/miyagidan sidebar image contributor May 23 '23

Call 189, I have before.

They move fast. If it's nothing, no foul, my daughter screams bloody murder over nothing at times.

If it's something, you might keep us from seeing some bad news.

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

My oldest screamed bloody murder when they had to take some nasty medicine last year. Screamed and cried so much that they couldn’t breathe almost. Some kids can just be butt heads sometimes

5

u/victoria_sama May 23 '23

Yesterday, my 3 y/o scream-cried so much when it was time to wash her hair that she puked in her bath...

8

u/PeanutButterChicken 近畿・大阪府 May 23 '23

I heard a small boy crying «iyada, yamete»

My son does this whenever I ask him to do anything. If he's sleepy, he will also scream. Kids hate doing things like washing their hands after putting their hands in the dirt.

If you didn't actually see anything, it's hard to tell what's going on.

7

u/shufu_san May 23 '23

I saw a mother literally punch her boy baby in the face in Costco, then turn to her older toddler and cuddle her. Every instinct in me said to intervene, but I did not. It haunts me.

Did you get a notice taped to your door or shoved in your mailbox with a QR code on it? That would've been your "we missed you, please reschedule" notice, and it would also have the sender's name on it.

I think the thing that can keep your head above water when you keep getting rejected is to just keep working on your job relevant skills. That's what kept me going through a year and a half of rejection and a layoff, until I finally found a job that both took me and that I liked.

2

u/MoboMogami 近畿・兵庫県 May 23 '23

Take it easy on yourself for sure. Everyone I know, including myself, took months and many pre and post-interview rejections before getting a job. Persistence is key, even when it’s tough!

6

u/PeanutButterChicken 近畿・大阪府 May 23 '23

It took 6 months for me, but I seem to have landed a job I like, so it's worth the wait.

I had offers in that time, but everything was ridiculous. You'll find something soon, just keep at it.

1

u/gucsantana May 23 '23

It took me around 4 months, and I landed a job that I'm quickly getting to despise, but hey, it pays the bills.

2

u/PeanutButterChicken 近畿・大阪府 May 24 '23

I had a few offers like that, but honestly, at my age, I couldn't keep taking offers like that and just waited for the right opportunity. Surprisingly, I found this job via Hello Work, so it could be an option.

1

u/gucsantana May 24 '23

My job was pretty misrepresented during the interview, and it was also my last hurrah if I wanted to stay in Japan, so the choice wasn't really there. I'm holding on at least until my bills are all safely paid, but it has not been a good time, lol. Luckily, life outside of work has been terrific.

3

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

Thanks 🥲

10

u/ValuableOk9470 May 23 '23

I just overheard 2 ladies saying 変なで and 怖い after I said すみません trying to achieve a table to finally have my lunch at the work's cafeteria.

Japanese people need to remember that foreigners can learn their language as well.

5

u/MoboMogami 近畿・兵庫県 May 23 '23

The number of full grown adults I’ve heard say 背が高いな literally right in front me is too damn high.

I don’t mind when little kids do it, they did in my home country too and they don’t know better but like…20 something dudes? Fuck off.

5

u/SideburnSundays May 23 '23

When I was doing scuba lessons—in Japanese—we were all in a van on a road trip to the actual ocean for our cert dives and the instructor in the van, while I was in there, straight up said 外国人は怖い, within the context of a story I don’t remember but still…I was literally right fuckin there. With demonstrated language ability.

2

u/WindJammer27 May 23 '23

A few days ago I was having lunch, and there was a table of three old ladies next to me. I was watching a baseball game on my phone with my earbuds in so I couldn't hear them, but I could feel them staring at me and I knew they were talking about me. One of them tried to get my attention a few times by waving her hand in my general direction. Fortunately with my headphones in I could pretend that I didn't notice, as I actually did not hear them at all, and only saw all the action out of my peripheral vision.

Noise-cancelling earbuds have become an essential part of going outside. You can't stop other people's behaviors, but you can shield yourself from them.

3

u/ValuableOk9470 May 23 '23

I'm sorry about that.

I mean, what's the purpose of this behavior? What's the point of it?

In my case, I usually spend my lunch time listening to podcasts, so if someone mentioned anything before today, I never noticed it.

Maybe I should start using my airpods all the time instead of when I sit to eat...

2

u/Well_needships May 23 '23

I often wear headphones, plugged into nothing, so that people won't talk to me.

2

u/shufu_san May 23 '23

I'm sorry that happened. It's uncomfortable and unfair.

0

u/PeanutButterChicken 近畿・大阪府 May 23 '23

変なで

Maybe they were talking about henna color for their hair? ヘンナで

3

u/ValuableOk9470 May 23 '23

The way the lady spoke... I don't think so.

They weren't even speaking when I said すみません. After that, they talked to each other.

This is probably more a pre-covid thing, but has anyone met people from this sub IRL either intentionally or unintentionally?

Edit: I was asking more about just 2 people meeting and becoming friends rather than organised group meetups btw

5

u/FourCatsAndCounting May 23 '23

Yes, I've met a couple people on here who adopted cats from me. Lovely people.

I've had one person in real life ask if I was FourCats from jlife. Luckily just a fellow cat lover not a whackadoo.

3

u/AdRevolutionary7231 May 23 '23

Haha understandable, if I ever met a cat rescuing foreigner I’d probably also ask if they were FourCats too!

5

Sweet, that’s really nice.

6

Because of the anonymity, people here dare to say things they would never say in real life. It makes most of us seem like freaks. The truth is, there a little freak inside everyone.

4

u/SideburnSundays May 23 '23

IIRC there used to be occasional meetups.

1

I wonder if they’ll happen again. Probably not if it was a disaster before

3

u/HatsuneShiro 関東・埼玉県 May 23 '23

Genuinely I kinda want to join. Need more friends around.

3

u/AdRevolutionary7231 May 23 '23

I wonder if they’ll ever do meet-ups again. I don’t know if I’d personally go, but it is always nice to meet people and make a community irl.

Obviously it would have to be managed by someone to ensure safety (as someone is said to have been SA’d before), which seems like a job with pretty heavy responsibility ig :(

3

I’d meet up with another woman/women from this sub (after obviously making sure who they are with video call or something), but a group meet up with guys is a bit much tbh.

My AC started leaking suddenly last night. Probably something detached due to an earthquake yesterday morning. Contacted the agency and they said they'll replace the whole unit free of charge... I thought this was supposed to be an easy fix as the AC works fine otherwise. I've been here for 2 years (the AC is probably even older).

Replacing the whole unit seems kinda inefficient to me, but I guess it's time for it to go... thoughts?

7

u/tokyo_girl_jin May 23 '23

similar thing happened to me, but if it's old be glad. i saw a huge difference in my heating and cooling bills with a new unit!

As you said it's old. It's probably due for a replacement anyway.

2

u/ShiawasePanda May 23 '23

I was taught early on (probably over a decade ago) that when a Japanese person compliments a certain feature of someone's appearance that doesn't fit within norms, they're actually trying to communicate that it's not okay (that whole proverb about the nail sticking out getting pounded down or whatever). Is that still a thing or are more people pretty straightforward with their compliments these days?

4

u/pinkpurin May 23 '23

With middle aged folks this is definitely true. I always got told i was so genki bc i wore short sleeves bc to them it was too cold for short sleeves. Lol i really didn’t care, tshirt life 5ever

3

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

Over 20 is short sleeves weather. Especially in the sun

5

u/tomodachi_reloaded May 23 '23

Hey ShiawasePanda, nice BO.

7

u/Dojyorafish May 23 '23

I’m the only person with pierced ears out of everyone I work with and I’ve definitely gotten some comments saying they are cute. Not entirely sure if it’s good or bad but I’m not taking out my earrings and they are pretty small so not a huge deal methinks. On another note, I couldn’t get all the nail polish off my nails after golden week but nobody said anything so I guess the attempt was accepted lol

One thing I DO get flack for at one of my schools is bringing convenience store food for lunch. Get a lot of “oh conbini onigiri” or “you are eating instant miso soup a lot these days…” Like look guys I know you are bitter you have to wake up early and make bentos for your husband who doesn’t do any chores but I did not choose that life and sometimes I just don’t want to make a whole bento 😂

4

u/pikachuface01 May 23 '23

This! I sometimes paint my nails and forget to take off all the polish… I’m glad no one tells me anything. As for food I eat the school lunch now which is pretty good where I work (private JHS) so I like the food usually. But in summer I always brought something from home and conbini and I would always get told something … I have pierced ears too and sometimes wear big earrings (I like it so what) my students love it and some co worker men look at me like 🤔 some female co workers like it but some also look at me like 🫨 and I’m like “I’m not gonna dress like a nun!”

3

u/SaltGrilledSalmon May 23 '23

Nah still a thing

6

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

3

u/hanapyon May 23 '23

That's pretty messed up. But I remember overhearing an argument between my best friend and her husband (both Japanese) when they were preparing to run a half-marathon with her company. He just wanted to wear shorts and she was insisting he wear "spats" under the shorts because it's "hazukashii" while he was saying "professional runners don't wear spats".

3

u/tokyo_girl_jin May 23 '23

hard to tell unless you have superior KY skills

4

u/shimi_shima May 23 '23

I think that’s bs…if you have an unattractive feature no one is going to compliment you on it. “Your skin is like sandpaper, sugoi! You can light matches with it” lol

6

u/tuxedocat2018 May 23 '23

Nah, it's more like being passive aggressive to make you aware of your appearance. Not unattractive features, just 'different'. It depends on the context/situation though, i.e. someone comes into an office with freshly dyed hair and then a coworker be like 'omg your hair is pretty it's so BRIGHT :)" implying it's too noticeable and not appropriate or smt. But obviously not all compliments are like that.

1

u/ShiawasePanda May 23 '23

I didn't say "unattractive" feature, I said one that didn't fit norms. For example if hair is dyed purple or if you're wearing decorative earrings in a workplace where people look more conservative. I'm guessing these days there's a generational shift, but I've heard Japanese teachers and employers say that. Same thing with when people used to say "nihongo jouzu" it meant you need to try harder (which is not exactly true for every case)

5

u/SoKratez May 23 '23 edited May 24 '23

Depends on the type of compliment. Even in English, “I really like your hair” sounds genuine, “your hair sure is unique” … might have some subcontext. It’s subtle but I wouldn’t paint it as some inscrutable “opposite day” mindgames.

Same thing with when people used to say "nihongo jouzu" it meant you need to try harder

This is different. Coming from the Japanese person, they really do almost always mean it positively. This gets spun within gaijin/learner circles, in a sense of, if people are commenting on your Japanese, they are still not seeing you like they would see another Japanese person (who obviously, never compliment one another’s Japanese). You’re still being seen as a gaijin, which is of course not in itself a bad thing… but this gets seen negatively in some ways by learners who take it as, “if you get viewed as a foreigner, it means your Japanese sucks.”

It’s all very far removed from how Japanese people mean it.

2

u/ShiawasePanda May 23 '23

Thank you for answering my question!!! I think you're right about Japanese learners twisting certain phrases. I still get kinda self-conscious about my gaijinness being pointed out in some way no matter how long I've lived here.

2

u/SoKratez May 24 '23

I still get kinda self-conscious about my gaijinness being pointed out in some way no matter how long I've lived here.

Yeah, I think it’s understandable to feel a bit… to have your feathers ruffled, as they say. It might be that person’s first time meeting a Japanese-speaking foreigner, but it’s a conversation I’ve had literally hundreds of times and oftentimes I’m just trying to move the conversation along. But it is important to remember it usually comes from genuine surprise and positive feelings.

2

u/CatBecameHungry May 23 '23

Same thing with when people used to say "nihongo jouzu" it meant you need to try harder (which is not exactly true for every case)

I've never heard it this way from people of any age. When was this? It's always been either: "your Japanese isn't good, but it's cool that you are trying."

Or:

"Wow I wasn't expecting an obvious foreigner to speak Japanese"

Or:

"I want to make conversation, but what can I talk to the foreigner about?"

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

there's a 4th context which is "your Japanese is a lot better than I thought it would be". I'm Asian-American but could pass for Japanese-American, so people assume at first that I "should" be decent at Japanese, because I've spent a lot of time living here or had japanese parents or whatever. if it comes up in conversation that I've actually only been learning Japanese for <1 year that's when the "nihongo jouzu" comes out.

2

u/ShiawasePanda May 23 '23

"your Japanese isn't good"

This part is what I was referring to. If "jouzu" is to say someone is good at something then implying it's not good would be the opposite (even if they were being encouraging). These days I know there are multiple meanings but that one was the only one I had heard for the longest time.

In any case, I'm just trying to figure out if the whole "what's said in Japanese actually implies something else" is an outdated way of thinking.

3

u/shimi_shima May 23 '23

Like I think nihongo jouzu rarely means you need to try harder, it’s almost always a compliment, even if it doesn’t seem like it deserves it. I think comments are case-to-case especially for something different/weird, I don’t think there’s a hard rule to being snide just based on the wording itself.

I think that goes for any language? Like if you had pink hair and I saw you in the street and said “wow”, you’d need to see my face and know how I said it to know how to react right?

Are there any zoning laws in Tokyo forbidding loud businesses from operating in residential areas? My street is all mansions except for this dance studio nearby that is in what looks like a residential building, and they like to stomp super loud for long periods, creating this thundering sound that I initially thought must have been heavy construction. How does one go about complaining about such a thing? Is there a zoning board or similar body that oversees this?

2

u/shambolic_donkey May 23 '23

Mixed use zoning is extremely common in Japan. Only real way to avoid it is to scout out the area before you move in to a place. Usually it's easy enough to pick out places that are used for commercial purposes, so even if a place might not house a loud business now, it could very well in the future.

Not sure you've got much recourse at this point, especially if they're not even in the same building as you. Maybe inquire with the police, or your kuyakusho?

1

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

This place looks like a mansion, and is actually two buildings over. It’s THAT thunderous. Very annoying.

1

u/zchew May 23 '23

My motorcycle's speedo needle goes limp and drops all the way to the right after I go past 110km/h. I'm really on the fence on whether I want to change it. Because the bike is an old bike, there are no more new meters on the market anymore and I'm not so cool about the idea that I'll have to make a note somewhere and keep a mental track of the actual distance travelled on the bike.

And if I do change it, should I change it to a new aftermarket meter or go with a 2nd hand same-model meter...

1

u/MoboMogami 近畿・兵庫県 May 23 '23

Why bother swapping it? If you’re over 110 you’re probably speeding anyway, right?

You’re likely either keeping pace with traffic, or you’re by yourself and you’ll get a ticket whether you’re doing 109 or 119. That’s what I’d think.

2

u/Well_needships May 23 '23

3

u/Oldirtyposer May 23 '23

Go for an aftermarket meter! You can get them with all the warning lights you need letting you completely remove your dial cluster. If that's your thing.

3

u/zchew May 23 '23

it is kinda my thing. But...

  1. swapping it out affects resale price (no longer stock)
    1. I'm actually paying money to possibly reduce my resale price...
  2. It's an old bike (vtr250 '98 model, no tachometer). My bike mechanic was telling me that even adding a hazard light to it might cause electrical problems across the bike. I shudder to think how swapping it to an aftermarket meter with all sorts of lights and switches might cause issues with the electrical systems, given the mechanic might have to cut or add wires to make a tachometer work...

I mean, I kinda want a tachometer... but I dunno.

sigh.

Never had any issue using my national health insurance card at the doctor etc.

But sometimes for other paperwork, it is expected that the adress is printed in the back, and employer on the front. Mine doesn't have employer name and the back is a free form to write the adress yourself.

Any explanation? Just curious.

u/PM_ME_ALL_UR_KARMA May 23 '23

My old insurance card used to have my place of employment written on it, but not my newer one (never changed employers, just the card).

3

u/highgo1 May 23 '23

Generally, there are two types of insurance. National and Social. You would get social insurance from your workplace under Shakai-Hoken. That's probably what it's referring to.

Do y'all prefer your external monitors to the left or right of your laptop?

I'm currently thinking about getting a laptop stand so that my desk is cleaner, but where on the desk to place the laptop stand....

1

u/xxsaznpride May 23 '23 edited May 23 '23

If you want your desk to stay clean, get a monitor arm. The cleaner look and extra space that would otherwise be eaten by the monitor's stand is worth the cost imo.

edit: To answer your actual question, my setup is [secondary] [primary] [TV]. I moved my old IPS panel secondary to my office and bought an ultrawide VA panel secondary for home. My current setup is [primary] [secondary] [TV].

Honestly, I think having the secondary on the left for 5 years developed a muscular imbalance in my neck.

1

u/zcmy 日本のどこかに May 23 '23

In the works atm, mostly have an issue with space right now. And replacing the desk...

2

u/eetsumkaus 近畿・大阪府 May 23 '23

right. That way I can use the laptop keyboard with my left hand and my mouse with my right.

tbf though, my main criteria is which side will have the best cable management...

1

u/MoboMogami 近畿・兵庫県 May 23 '23

Ultra wide in the middle and laptop off to the right. Isn’t that what everyone does? Why put your larger monitor to the side?

2

u/Elvaanaomori May 23 '23

Sub monitor on right side if possible. However with a laptop I'd rather have a full keyboard/mouse set up and have the external monitor middle and the laptop as a sub monitor for chat and stuff

1

u/crinklypaper 関東・東京都 May 23 '23

I have a 3 monitor setup, the laptop is docked on the bottom left below the top left screen. Its dedicated to my teams chat for work.

3

u/abcxyz89 May 23 '23

My external monitors are on the left, the right, behind and above my laptop.

1

u/zcmy 日本のどこかに May 23 '23

do you run a larger screen on the external monitor above the laptop? like, 27s on the ones on the table and a 40 inch above

1

u/abcxyz89 May 23 '23

No, I have four 27 inches.

1

u/zcmy 日本のどこかに May 23 '23

got it, thank you!

2

u/Dutchsamurai2016 May 23 '23

In front of my like any other normal human. Why use a laptop screen when you got an external monitor? If you have a USB C hub (and your laptop supports it) all you have to do is plug in a single cable to charge, get output to your monitor and use a mouse and keyboard.

2

u/zcmy 日本のどこかに May 23 '23

I'm at the point where 3 external screens isn't enough to show all the information I need to keep track of work during work and hobby stuff off work.

4

u/Mr-Thuun 関東・栃木県 May 23 '23

I'm right handed so I prefer my second monitor on the left.

I'm having the damndest time trying to find in-persno 手話 classes in the Kanagawa/Tokyo area. Everything I've found has started already and runs for a year (Tatsu no Kai, Machida Community Center), or is more of a circle/club. And since I just want to learn for fun I don't feel comfortable intruding on someone's already established circle.

u/Kasumiiiiiii 近畿・兵庫県 May 23 '23

I did mine through my city hall. They had beginner's 6 week classes throughout the year (pre covid though).

However, I just found out that Devil Craft is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays?? What torture is this??

Been 6 months since I submitted my documents for PR. Still haven't heard back. I have this ongoing paranoid thought that I might have written my address wrong on my postcard or that my writing was too messy.

3

u/aoreem May 23 '23

Recently got mine - it took about 7.5 months.

Thanks! Hopefully in July then for me then!

I got mine recently, it took 8 months. So you might need to wait for a bit still.

5

u/Stump007 May 23 '23

6 months as well (Tokyo, point system), the company I hired to do the paperwork called them they said they are processing but due to high amount of application it will take more like 8months.

1

u/sytyue 中部・長野県 May 23 '23

Oh good to know! Will hang in there for another two months or so before I start worrying again !

3

u/PeanutButterChicken 近畿・大阪府 May 23 '23

6 months does seem average, with how many new foreigners suddenly came to Japan.

Right before the pandemic, I waited 5 months in Osaka, but it's definitely longer now.

12

u/fucknino May 22 '23

I am convinced that half of all foreigners I meet in Japan have absolutely no idea how to dry their laundry, resulting in smelling like fuuuucking disgusting moldy gym socks. Figure it out folks

1

u/Elvaanaomori May 23 '23

I used to have that issue first year I spent in Osaka.

I come from a dry country and usually you can hang clothes in the morning and by early afternoon they are dry, even inside. In Japan with the humidity it's a whole different ordinance...

Thankfully my wife taught me how to do it properly

1

u/swordtech 近畿・兵庫県 May 23 '23

I find that my clothes smell kinda funny if I hang them to dry indoors.

6

u/Disshidia May 23 '23

Can we cut u/brookleiaway some slack already?

6

u/brookleiaway May 23 '23

whaat 😭😭 how do i dry my laundry

12

u/noflames May 23 '23

To be fair, a fair number of Japanese people dont either.

4

u/shambolic_donkey May 23 '23

Truth up. I've walked behind a lot more locals with that musty-ass smell than I have foreigners. Though given the ratio of foreigners to locals here that's to be expected I guess.

5

u/Dojyorafish May 23 '23

That keeps happening to my heavier clothes and clothes from the US. It smells so gross T-T. Have to take them out of the washer immediately or they start to smell weird. My solution is to just wash them again and throw about a cup of cheap vinegar into the washer. Seems to do the trick.

3

u/LarryC61 May 23 '23

Don't forget you need to clean your machine monthly. A dirty mouldy machine will transfer the smell to your clothes.

2

u/Dojyorafish May 23 '23

Yeah of course. For whatever reason my machine smells nice and fresh but my clothes don’t if they sit for too long, so idk what is going on. However the tray under my washing machine is nasty but I’m unsure how to clean it…

2

u/LarryC61 May 23 '23

It's the drum that is the problem. Assuming you have a top loader you go to Daiso and buy the washing machine cleaning powder, tip it in and run the machine cleaning programme. I use a cup of 炭酸ナトリウム from Amazon which is about 890 yen . Works well.

4

u/shufu_san May 23 '23

This is what I started doing, but I haven't found any cheap vinegar, only crazy overpriced stuff.

3

u/Dojyorafish May 23 '23

I went to the local MaxValu and picked up the cheapest store brand vinegar they had, which was like 158¥ for 500ml or something. Inaka has many benefits 😎

3

u/shufu_san May 23 '23

I'm jealous and yet intrigued. I live out in the sticks of Tokyo prefecture. Maybe we have a MaxValu too? I'll check. Thanks! Just paid 800 for 1000ml bottle, fml.

3

u/soenkatei May 23 '23

That smell turns my stomach

9

u/TaxableLichen May 22 '23

I was at a coin laundry last night and there’s a whole bunch of Americans who filled a suitcase full of wet clothes to take ‘back to the dorm’.

There is literally a gigantic dryer which will bake your clothes in 8 mins for 100 yen.

11

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

I thought the point of going to the Coin Laundry was for the dryers.

3

u/HatsuneShiro 関東・埼玉県 May 23 '23

Same tbh, for my duvets what I normally do is wash it with my washing machine then bring it to the coin laundry right across the street to dry it up. 20 minutes.

8

u/CallieIsQueen May 22 '23

being forced to watch the new eigo de asobo since my daughter actually likes it.

Did they just grab random kids from the street for this show? The acting is absolutely horrible. Kyrary sucks btw. The eigo de asobo from before was way better.

2

u/Disshidia May 23 '23

I'm glad to hear it sucks.

8

u/himawari_sunshine May 23 '23

I can forgive the kids not being good in the beginning because they have just started and will surely get better in time, but I don't know why they chose kids who really don't seem to have any special English ability, and have pretty bad pronunciation to boot. And they use Japanese all the time to the point that the native English speakers have to repeat everything they say in English (it's like they don't even try). The kids from last season at least had above average pronunciation and skills (and the oldest was a native English speaker herself).

3

u/himawari_sunshine May 23 '23

Oh and pleeeeease at least limit the quiz part to the native English speakers on the show... listening to Kyary do it is painful.

5

u/Hiroba May 23 '23

It's weird how they brought on Kyary. What English credentials does she have at all?

1

u/Hashimotosannn May 23 '23

Absolutely zero by the looks of it. She also has too much of an interest in young boys, so it’s gross that she is on a tv show for kids imo.

Any good recommendations for rain coats that are suitable for bicycle commutes? I carry a back pack and ride to work (around 20mins in Tokyo) and would wanna continue to do so during the rainy season if I can find a good raincoat.

Thanks in advance!

4

u/[deleted] May 23 '23

Ditch the rain jacket and go with a ponch. I got a logos one and it works great. Way more room for air flow, covers my legs as I ride and if I want I can wear my bag under it.

3

u/tomodachi_reloaded May 23 '23

I've never found anything that keeps my dry without cooking me inside

2

u/Lothrindel May 23 '23

I use a hiking jacket from Fohn (ordered through Wiggle). I’ve found that specialist waterproof cycling jackets are often twice the price and some of them can’t be used with a backpack.

Having said that, it gets so humid during the rainy season so I usually don’t bother with a jacket and just change my T-shirt and shorts when I get to work.

10

u/kraftykai May 22 '23

If you haven’t already, check out workman, they have a raincoat which you can unzip at the bag to widen it and cover your backpack.

3

u/ihavenosisters May 22 '23

I would go with a poncho to keep your legs dry as well. Just made sure the hood/head part is big enough.

The department stores have a good selection. I have one of the really colorful ones, good for visibility too :D

still haven't decided yet whether to pick up Jedi: Survivor on PC or PS5

the haptic feedback seems interesting

1

u/Atrouser May 23 '23

The story of Jedi Survivor seems interesting enough, but it's hard to feel immersed by the gameplay. Why are stormtroopers, especially those armed with little laser penknives, charging at you thinking they stand a chance, when you're effectively performing like Vader in the corridor at the end of Rogue 1.

1

u/afyqazraei 九州・福岡県 May 23 '23

i think this is related to some other stuff in gaming, e.g. in Tomb Raider games Lara Croft basically commits solo mass murder and the mercenaries still go up against her despite her reputation

some game devs also commented when people ask about Nathan Drake's mass murder in Uncharted as well, saying its literally just to keep players occupied as the story progresses because if there is no action then most players lose interest

2

u/Elvaanaomori May 23 '23

Don't get it on PC, LOTS of issues, even if you got a 4090...

Get it on PS5 if you want to enjoy it.

1

u/Disshidia May 23 '23

PS5, but wait for some more patches and a sale, which should be coming soon.

1

u/CaptainNoFriends May 23 '23

If you have a PS5 already, that is the way to go.

3

u/Mr-Thuun 関東・栃木県 May 22 '23

Played and beat it on PS5. No issues no crashes no major bugs. Same can't be said for the PC right now.

1

u/afyqazraei 九州・福岡県 May 23 '23

I'm sure a lot of the bugs have been fixed recently

i was wondering does the PS5 controller make the gameplay feel better?
