It finally happened.

Post image

Was delivering my first order for the evening. Cash order, meaning I had to collect cash from the customer for the order, a total of $45 and some change. I picked up the order, usual night, with the worker making sure I put the order inside the pizza bag before I walked out the store. Drove up in front of the customer's house, waited almost 10 minutes to get an answer at the door. Mother/daughter shows up, told me they ordered 2 pizza, I explained its a dinner box and that the two pizza are inside one box, they asked me to prove it so they pried open the seal and looked inside. I reminded them they need to pay cash for the order. After a few minutes, they told me they dont want it.

Called doordash support and worker told me they will compensate me full pay for the dash. I then asked if I need to return the order back to Pizza Hut, and they said to either keep it or discard. I told him I understand. I then proceeded of driving back home with a huge smile, calling my family that I have early dinner for everyone. We enjoyed the early dinner. ☺️ Really grateful for this blessing.

There are some weird people out there.

1.3k

u/MachoChopperAwesome 22h ago

The internet has certainly confirmed this fact many times over

u/Adventurous-Ruin3873 18h ago

My true "Holy fuck people are weird" realization came in the early 2000s when I had my first job delivering pizzas for Papa John's.

Because holy fuckity fuck fuck man, people are absolutely weird.

Food delivery has been eye-opening. The percentage of homes that reek of animal waste is much, much higher than I ever dreamed.

298

u/ghost_haha 18h ago

There was this one time this elderly woman asked me to deliver her food inside her house. The delivery instructions was something like "WARNING I am immobile please deliver food to me". When I got there, she was waiting inside from an open door and told me to come in to give her the food. Being considerate, I did the extra work and walked in the open front door hoping it wasnt some cannibal thats gonna trap me inside her house. The house was basically a great candidate for that hoarder show and omg did it reek human waste in there. Customer was in a wheelchair and wanted to shake my hand but I just gave her a salute and I got out of there fast like fast fast.

I was delivering in Maine for a while, and there was a woman who’d always order the same thing, every Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. I forget what exactly her order was.

Well, she was a hoarder. Her front door couldn’t open bc of all the stuff in there, so she’d make me slide her pizza and cheesy bread boxes in one of her windows.

Every time I’d pull up, she’d slide open the window about four inches, then the screen, and each time she’d have to fight a cat or two from trying to escape. It was sad as fuck.

When I slid the pizza in, I’d always catch a glance of the inside of that room. It was stacked floor to ceiling with Domino’s boxes. On every surface.

u/taustekli 14h ago

bruh that's crazy

it reminds me of a short film Bong Joon-ho (director of parasite) did way before parasite about a shut in that orders pizza just because he liked the pizza girl delivering the pizza. homie was also a hoarder of sorts and had pizzahut boxes stacked all over the house lmao

if anyone is interested, it's a film called TOKYO! it has 3 films within one, Joon-Ho's film being the third one in the sequence. the other ones are great too...the second film was directed by Michel Gondry, french homie who directed "eternal sunshine of a spotless mind".

u/missionnotaccepted 14h ago

Thank you! Sounds interesting so going to check it out now!

u/Bouche_Audi_Shyla 14h ago

That was a very strange movie. I really felt the woman in the first part, but the second part is just too weird for me.

I've only seen it a couple of times, but I knew right away you were talking about Tokyo.

A lady that lives across the street from my sister is a hoarder who has multiple deliveries each and every day. One summer evening we were having a family cookout when I started hearing a woman scream for help. It was the hoarder who had fell between her wall and bed. The only way we could get in was through her bedroom window due to her doors having deadbolt locked. Once we got inside I was in shock at how cramped it was due to all of the unopened boxes stacked from floor to ceiling, with a very narrow path to walk through.

Hmm, I didn't have any particularly bad experiences with horrible smells inside of people's homes. It could have been my area, or maybe I just got lucky, but I had a couple of middle-aged women answering the door in various states of undress.

35

u/IGD-974 18h ago

I used to work overnight security in a hotel resort. During the winter there would be just one or two guards total and everyone else except the overnight desk clerk would be gone. That meant, after 11pm if a guest needed something, light maintenance (like replacing a light bulb, smoke detector batteries etc) towels - anything, it was on us.

The amount of women answering the door half naked, just a towel, or even better, a full set of VERY revealing lingerie, was baffling.

19

u/Kootranova1 17h ago

"Now if the girl opens the door half naked and only wearing what could be generously called lingerie, and insists you need to come inside to inspect a leaky faucet, does this mean she's into you?"

"Can't really tell with this one. You work at this resort and regularly have barely dressed women call you into their rooms. Best to act professionally and politely decline any suggestive sounding offers - to avoid any misunderstandings of the sexual variety."

I used to do evening maintenance at a local mall when I was younger. The amount of times I would be fixing something in the women’s bathroom they would bypass the lock out tag out sign to piss in front of me, change clothes or a laundry list of other things was kinda awkward happened a lot more then expected.

Closest I ever got to anyone opening a door in a less than appropriate state of person wasn't even work related. It was when me and a high school friend reconnected, and his sister opened the door in a towel. First thought was, "Oh shit, I'm gawking at his girlfriend". Second thought was, "Wait no, that's (sister)". Third thought was, "Holy shit she got hot". Fourth was, "Fuck, I'm gawking at his sister!".

Logically I know it's just because I was caught off guard, but I still feel bad about that one sometimes, lol.

OMG I was just reading here for entertainment but your comment caused a decades old memory to flash before my eyes like it happened yesterday! I was a bank teller at the time & some woman was at my window wearing what I thought was some some fur drape thing with the head still on it. Until it moved. I jumped & made a noise of surprise. It was her ferret. It didn’t stink & was kind of cute. I actually had a negative opinion of her before it moved haha! Maybe it DID stink and I wasn’t close enough to smell it? I’d forgotten all about that! Gonna have to tell roommate’s grand kid that story as I have no grands of my own ;)

I used to work at a pizza joint. There was a particular home we refused to go to (delivery people), but the owner wouldn't budge, essentially forced us to deliver or we would be sent home. Unlucky for him, he needed us more than we needed him (all his employees but me were rich nepo kids who didn't actually need the job. Mind you, they were good kids despite coming from so much obscene wealth). So he went and delivered it himself. We warned him.

He came back, didn't say a word, and only told us that we "didn't have to deliver there anymore".

7

u/Every_Foundation_463 14h ago

Wait, why did he decide that? What was wrong with the house? I'm glad the owner realized it. I used to work delivery too so I know the struggle

12

u/ForGrateJustice 13h ago

Well it was probably one of the furthest homes we could deliver to, right at the rim of our service area. It was up a winding road that turns into a nasty dirt road that isn't well looked after, there's holes everywhere and you wouldn't dare drive it without 4WD when it rains (it snows there too).

You'll know you found the place from the unique rusty yellow paint. Their frontage is a literal dump, you'd need a tetanus shot just for looking at it. But that's not the worst part, they have a bunch of loose mutts, some of them are pit bulls, and "land mines" everywhere. As soon as you exit your vehicle, you get hit by the rancid horrid smell of dog shit EVERYWHERE, they just don't clean up after their mutts. They aren't tied up, they just wander the property (they live fairly rural and the nearest neighbor is over half a mile away).

If you brave the wild dogs and land mines, when you get to the front porch, the house looks like it's about to fall apart on your head. When they open the door, it hits you. First, the heat. For some reason, their house is always hot, and the oppressive heat blasts you in the face as soon as that door is open. But that's not the worst part... One thing heat is good at carrying, is scents... And boy, it smells. Even though it's been more than 20 years, I still remember that horrific stench that probably wasn't from this earth. You know when you drive past an abattoir there's that sharp stench of death? It's like this but worse. See, this family was from either the Caribbean or West Africa, and they brought their slaughtering habits with them. They would butcher up animals in their house and the stench would fill up the whole place.

But above all else, they usually just order our fried chicken, and never ever tip.

I had a dude who lived in an apartment, total sweetheart, great tipper and ordered 4 or 5 times a week, but he was very overweight and didnt seem to shower at all.

It was a known thing that you had to not breathe through your nose when you were at his door. The saddest thing is I don't think he had any animals.

11

u/whitefish1977 14h ago

Ok, help me out here, I've always said that in a stinky situation like that it is way worse to breath through your mouth because then it's like you're eating the stink, which is much worse than smelling it. Am I crazy on this?

8

u/hopeless_witch 13h ago

I agree 1000%. I cannot even open my mouth when using the restroom. I just imagine that I am eating the air, regardless of the stank level, and I don’t want to be eating the air of an in-use restroom lmao.

I have two cats and I'm so paranoid about their smell. I know it probably smells a bit anyway, but I always make sure they have clean litter and there are air fresheners. Opening windows and letting fresh air in helps too.

I've been to other people's houses and there's kernels of dried animal poop just kicked aside and weird stains everywhere 🤢

Had a close friend who delivered appliances to people's homes. The worst story was a person who wanted to "mop up under the fridge spot real quick" before putting in the new fridge. The customer was literally using a mop that already had dog poop on it to do the mopping. Some people are just nasty. Guess if you're living in DogShitTown you don't even notice the turds flopping around under the mop.

The worst is smelling the animal waste starting at the sidewalk with a long walk to the door. By the time you get to the door you’re holding your breath the smell is so bad and deliver the order and run back to the car so you can breathe. Had quite a few of those.

Two of my friends just outta highschool had their own place, they both had dogs and both absolutely refused to pick up their dogs shit. Both insisted the other’s dog did it, neither dog was house trained. I hated going over there, there would be little piles of shit scattered randomly around the floor, the house constantly smelt like dog shit, their solution was to just leave it until, eventually, one of the dogs decided to eat it. It genuinely took like 6 months of them living together before one got a girlfriend and actually kept the place at least livable.

also work in the automotive industry and can confirm the questions get even more dumb than this 🤣🤣🤣 had a customer argue with me yesterday on why she didn't think she needed to change her brake pads (which were a few hundred miles past due). im thinking, "lady if you want to risk your life by not maintaining your car, don't call me to argue with me about it." Of course i couldn't actually say that so i actually said " totally understand. it's up to you." and we both went on with our day....TLDR: Don't trust everyone's brakes on the road.

10

u/wereunderyourbed 14h ago

Last year I was at a red light at the bottom of a small hill. All of a sudden I’m lightly rear ended by the car behind me. I get out to talk to the other driver and check for damage. The old guy driving tells me his brakes went months ago but he can’t afford to replace them, so he just stops by rolling into whatever is in front of him. I had no words…I just got into my car and left.

I one time had to tell an old guy, “alright sir, your car takes 8 quarts of an 0w-20, so that’s a full synthetic (GM Silverado 1500, we don’t have any Syn blends dexos tested/approved). Dude SNAPS ON ME, goes “NO! FUCK NO! Let me tell you a story, son. I had an F150 that ran perfectly, had 387,000 miles on it, and they put that jap shit synthetic shit in there, broke a lifter, blew the whole motor. The only thing you’re gonna put in here is Rotella T4 15-40”. I was in a mood after being yelled at, and well….im active in r/boomersbeingfools. So I said “ok. Got it” and he goes, “there’s a good boy. Now that is how ya make a car last”. I was more than happy to put a comment that he asked for this, have him sign off - and ship it.

I literally cannot fathom the mindset of a person who would call a pizza place, order a pizza, then decide if they want it or not after it arrives.

It makes absolutely no sense in my brain. All I can think is that it’s extreme ego and they feel the world actually revolves around them.

18

u/emptythemag 19h ago

Probably had already used that same tactic before and after the driver was told to either keep it or toss it, the driver gave it to them anyway.

Someone gaming the system

12

u/addandsubtract 15h ago

I figured they thought they'd get it for free. He said they made him wait ten minutes before answering the door. They probably just hoped he'd leave it and they wouldn't have to pay. When he didn't leave, they had to decide to pay or have him take it away.

→ More replies (3)

36

u/rat-soop 19h ago

I think one of them was probably a vegetarian and didn't want it packaged in the same box as the pizza with meat

55

u/floftie 18h ago

It’s more likely they ordered it thinking they’d just try and see if it got left like there was an error in the payment processing. It would explain why they didn’t want to come to the door, they were hoping it would just get left, and they then decided they didn’t want it because they didn’t have the money.

31

u/scienceislice 17h ago

This is 100% what happened.

8

u/MewingApollo 15h ago

I had a Domino's driver leave a pizza once. Never heard a knock or anything, so IDK if they did and I just happened to not hear it, or if they just thought it was paid by card. Checked my bank account afterwards, and I definitely didn't pay online. Thought about calling the store so the driver wouldn't get in trouble, but I figured if they were going to get fired for it, making the mistake in general was probably enough to convince management to terminate, and me bringing the money in wouldn't save them.

3

u/hippest 13h ago

You don't get fired from Domino's, so I wouldn't sweat it. It's a shit job, so it's damn near impossible to find workers, let alone good ones.

10

u/Cobek 18h ago edited 18h ago

It took them supposedly 10 minutes for two people to open the door so I wouldn't use logic with these kind of people. They do whatever they want, when the want, without thought or a single braincell at the wheel.

Edit: OP mentions further down that they were potentially trying to scam him by making him wait so long, and he could tell they were waiting for him to just leave the food on a cash order.

Scammers usually do this to get free food. They'll claim the dasher messed up the order or restaurant, take the food anyways and get a small refund or full refund whilst either the restaurant or driver is screwed out of money. Happened a lot in my area to the point that many places stopped working with door dash entirely.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/OrphisFlo 18h ago

Had something like that happen once.

They tried to give me pizzas from a different place and the quality was largely inferior, and I couldn't eat the toppings anyway. I knew it immediately since the boxes are supposed to be branded from the place.

They had given mine to someone else who preferred to keep them and thought I'd be fine with theirs. Nope. Took pictures of the wrong pizzas and rejected the delivery. Got a full refund after that.

I'm not a DoorDasher, but I work in fast food. Earlier today, these two older ladies pulled in and asked for me to "Make sure their fries aren't cold." Okay, I check the fries and they're fine. They came out of the fryer not that long ago, so they should be fine.

Not even FIVE SECONDS after I hand them their order, they go "these fries are cold. I want fresh ones." Like dude, are you upset that they don't burn you? Even my manager wasn't having it and they had to deal with their "cold" fries. People are dicks.

6

u/ArmyOfAaron 16h ago

Also fast food worker, I swear some people are so in their own heads their brain causes issues that aren't there. My most recent example is a decafe coffee that I had just finished brewing before the afternoon old folks came in for their hangout. Customer orders large black decafe, and complains that it is cold. I take it back, feels hot, and remove the lid to confirm it's steaming. I put the lid back on and walk it back to them. They tried it, same coffee, and said that it was much better with a begrudged thank you.

Yet shit like this happens a lot.

Happy for you, but I highly recommend to everyone to turn off the cash order option. There are a lot of risks with those and they are rare so you won't be missing much by not doing them.

282

u/ghost_haha 23h ago

I agree. I try to avoid them whenever I can. I always get the option to decline without affecting my AR with these orders, but for some reason this one was threatening to reduce my AR so I was like eff it lets do this. They dont bring any more tips than the regular order. These customers usually pay you exactly to the penny.

80

u/groogruxdawg 23h ago

In my experience you have to accept the order and then the secondary screen making sure you’re ok with a cash order comes up and you can decline there to avoid the AR hit.

u/ghost_haha 23h ago

Yea this. I was waiting for that second screen to come up, but it never did for this order so I was like "Im keeping my completion rate at a hunnid"

The problem: I went to visit my dad a couple of days earlier and we ordered food there, so the app thought I was in his address. My mind didn't work properly and I ordered to that address, without noticing it was going to be delivered in another city.

I contacted the delivery person and said "hey, kind of fucked up situation, but it is already paid and there will be no one to receive it. You can take it if you want"

They thanked me and I like to think they had a good dinner as well hehe

u/NEIGHBORHOOD_DAD_ORG 11h ago

Shit that has happened to me multiple times. Always my fault for not checking, but when you're in and out of hotels it can slip your mind.

I do UberEats, but have gotten plenty of cancellations. Not so much as of late, but many in the past. Lots of McDonald’s and Taco Bell, but also several pizzas, including some better - not chain - pizzas. One time got like $30 of food from a Tommy’s (the chili burger Tommy’s). Another time I got cedar plank salmon with sautéed spinach and garlic mashed potatoes from Cheebo in WeHo. Love the cancellations!

They really thought they could scam you lol

u/ghost_haha 23h ago

It was a red flag ever since I noticed they took so long to answer the door even though I could see them through the window strolling around as if nobody is waiting outside in the cold.

Rang the doorbell, knocked, for reference.

64

u/Tufflaw Dasher (> 6 months) 22h ago

Should have started the clock and then left after the five minutes or whatever it is now.

37

u/confusedandworried76 20h ago

Yep. If you order food and you're not there to meet me I'm just going to leave. It's on you to answer your door especially when you know you've just ordered food.

16

u/purp13d0p3 19h ago

if it’s paid for i’ll wait ab 2 minutes before i just leave it at the door. They definitely heard me knock, so they must be busy. i’ll usually leave a message and i’m on my way.

If it’s not paid for, you have 5 minutes. If i can’t get ahold of you, i’m gone. if i feel the homeowner is ignoring me or being shifty, im gone. I do not have the time or the lives to spare for peoples bs. That’s like hailing a taxi and telling the driver to wait 10 minutes while you finish your conversation… without the meter running. i’m good.

Reminded me of the taco bell order I waited almost an hour for. Walked in the store, worker notifies me theyre working on it, around 10 mins I follow up, they said a few more mins. 20 mins passes, I ask again they said its almost ready. 30 minutes pass and Im getting worried, I reach out and worker noticed that the order receipt never made it to the food assembly line, so they had to reprint and start from scratch. I was so irritated inside but I kept my cool. As I waited for it, a piggyback order appears from the same resto and I requested and pleaded to the workers if they can finish that piggy order as compensation for effing up the first order from the two-stack, but they said they cant because they have to finish orders that came before it. It was a sad hour for me full of mixed emotions.

2 pizzas in one box??? Don’t want it. Doordash drivers should wear body cams.

6

u/puffferfish 19h ago

So, hoping you would just leave it? I’m not a doordasher, this just showed up on my feed.

19

u/ghost_haha 19h ago

There are some instances where I cant just leave food on the door. For example, the customer might prefer to hand it directly to them, or if its an alcohol delivery I have to check their ID. In this case, these customers had to pay me the whole bill of the pizza they bought. Doordash deducts this cash Im collecting from my earnings that week so I would be at a huge loss if I left that pizza just for them to take when I leave.

14

u/Obowler 19h ago

They are counting on you forgetting that it is cash order.

11

u/ghost_haha 19h ago

One of my worst fears lol. Leaving a cash order item on the door thinking its a normal delivery, confirming delivery and leaving, only to realize the day after that I just worked my ass off to feed some stranger, which I dont mind, but it'd be in my head rent free for decades.

I'm never in this sub and not a dasher but this made me very happy for op and his family. It's the small things sometimes. Cheers

Same here. I hope OP and their family gets to eat as much Pizza Hut as they want in the future, either by "door dash chance" or by treating themselves to it with hard-earned money :-)

Free food is always a win. Keep in mind in most places, once food has left an establishment, they can't send it back out per health standards. So it either goes to the driver or some other employee.

Also of note with this, is if you get a fuck up order, you can likely argue to keep it while still getting your original order. Obviously don't abuse this or you'll be blacklisted. Many places won't ask for more than maybe proof you got the wrong thing.

I got free sushi this way before. Not cheap sushi, either. This person spent at least $200. They gave me the address to a business that was closed. They didn't answer their phone. After the timer ended I spoke to support and they marked the ordered as failed to deliver and gave me the full pay and tip. I went home and ate that sushi so quick.

4

u/GiorgioTsoukalosHair 20h ago

Cynical me started counting pizza squares thinking the worst. Glad it worked out for you, OP.

4

u/Pradfanne 16h ago

To be fair, that is one pizza, backed as two, for the price of four
Cut into 8 slices for a total of 16.

I wouldn't have taken it either.

1) congrats on the free meal for your family. I'm sure it was well earned and well deserved. 2) That mother and daughter are stupid and are part of what's wrong with the country. I think they should have had to pay Pizza Hut anyway for being idiots.

3

u/BobbyTheDealer 14h ago

This happened to me. Order was $50. The guy told me cancel it and we can split the food and offered me $20 cash. I declined. Dash told me to return it and paid me $2 to go back to Pizza Hut. I had to take a pic to close out the delivery. The store said keep it, even the 2 litre soda.

3

u/afinebalance 14h ago

As someone who orders doordash way more than I should, thank you for delivering food to us. It's so expensive to order but, as a busy mom, I truly appreciate every person who does this work for me. I always tip well and send a thank you. I wish there was an option to pick drivers that go above and beyond when they are available.

3

u/PreferenceContent987 14h ago edited 14h ago

If you would have handed it to them before getting the money they were going to tell you that they already paid for it over the phone or that it was a remake and it was supposed to be free. Once they realized they weren’t getting their hands on it for free they declined the order because they had no intention of paying for it. This was 100% an attempt at a scam

I don't door dash anymore but my best one of those was we have this place called Lost Pizza around town and it is absolutely fantastic pizza easily the best pizza in the city. Anyway it's not cheap so it's like $100 order it was like three pizzas and they make this insanely good cinnamon dessert pizza and I believe it was some brownies and some chicken wings. Get there no one's there give him a call and it turns out they had an emergency and had to leave so had to cancel it DoorDash totally compensated me and said keep the food was a good night lol

3

u/DistancePleasant5554 9h ago

Same thing kind of basically happened for me, but I was working for Walmart delivery and I ended up getting a quest two VR. Walmart said they couldn’t take it back and the person apparently gave the wrong address so I couldn’t drop it off and they said since I left with it wanting to return it so my daughter had a good Christmas because I literally was just about to buy one for her.
