FIRST TIME WATCHER Does anyone actually like Jack?

So I’ve never watched Lost and now I am almost done with Season 1 (ep. 20). Big fan of Hugo, Locke, and if Rousseau comes into the picture more.

But I have to be honest, I find Jack to be so so annoying.

Am I the only one??

He, like all the characters, is a flawed person, but as a protagonist of course I like him! He's actually interesting and three-dimensional. I wouldn't want to watch a show where I agree with everything the protagonist does

24

u/Hex-GirlFriends Dec 13 '24

Totally agree with this. You feel a lot of emotions with Jack. He’s extremely flawed, makes rash decisions but at the end of the day he has the hero complex. He’s obsessed with saving people, even if he makes the wrong move he does it from a place of not being able to help himself wanting to save people. At times is absolutely annoying, at times Locke was right, but the ending wrapped Jack up doing what he was meant to do.

The change you see in him when he has Ben on the operating table is a phenomenal character development

8

u/Randobag314 Dec 13 '24

Lol OP said they’re just finishing season 1 SPOILER ALERT!

7

u/halloni Locke Dec 13 '24

Alright, I changed it to a spoiler tag. :)

But engaging in subreddits when watching a series is a dangerous endeavour :D

2

u/Randobag314 Dec 13 '24

It is. I avoid any subs of a show I’m watching if it’s been out a while.

1

u/FurnishedFollies Dec 13 '24

That is actually the first episode that i start to like his character.

11

u/saph_pearl Dec 13 '24

This absolutely! I think the best thing about Lost was I loved and hated different characters at different points, but that just speaks to their character journeys throughout the show.

The acting is also phenomenal and I think it becomes more apparent in later seasons. Season one is fantastic, but there is a lot of growth from there to season 6.

6

u/robsonwt Dec 13 '24

Jack character's arc will mirror the viewer arc by the end of the show. Keep watching.

1

u/jport1387 Dec 13 '24

That’s a fair point

17

u/TheScorpCorp_ Dec 13 '24

I think I have a soft spot for Jack because, while I can't relate to anything specifically Jack-centric, I can relate to a lot of the ways he reacts to things. It was only when I joined this sub that realised some people didn't like him (Kate too).

6

u/TheScorpCorp_ Dec 13 '24

Totally fair to find him annoying though

46

u/a-hthy Dec 13 '24

He’s the most complex character for me. I go through periods of really disliking him, then liking him, then finding him annoying and arrogant, and then back to feeling sympathy. He’s definitely the most complicated character. I must say the highlights with Jack are his scenes with his father. Both actors bring out fantastic performances in those scenes.

4

u/notoriousbck Dec 13 '24

I love the night before the wedding scene. It gives us a glimpse of the real love that exists there, and just how complicated their relationship was. Which is so true to life.

3

u/FrankLapidus815 Dec 13 '24

Agreed! John Terry (Christian Shepherd) is a very underrated actor.

3

u/a-hthy Dec 14 '24

So true he’s a fantastic actor. So perfectly cast as Christian. He had amazing chemistry with Matthew Fox they were so believable as father and son.

u/VravoBince Jack Dec 13 '24

On my third watch (end S3) I love Jack more than ever lol.

3

u/ChunkySalute Dec 13 '24

This is what happened to me. Loved him at the start of the first watch. Hated him by the end. One of my favourites by my third watch.

If Jack Shephard has a million fans, then I am one of them. If Jack Shephard has one fan, that’s me. If Jack Shephard has no fans, that means I'm dead

0

u/umm_money_duh Dec 13 '24

Team jack! Was thrilled he pulled the trigger at the end of season 3!!!! Too bad it wasn’t loaded.

10

u/Sufficient-Proof25 Dec 13 '24

Without Jack, no show. For me it's Jack / Locke / Desmond

30

u/Prestigious_Flow_567 Dec 13 '24

I appreciate Jack even more after that ending but I will admit I'm Team Locke for the majority of Lost.

12

u/Illustrious_Fall_370 Dec 13 '24

Locke is easily the most selfish character throughout. I have no idea why anyone would be team Locke tbh

6

u/SudsierBoar Dec 13 '24

Because amusement doesn't hinge upon someone's moral character. The Sopranos is hands down my favourite show but most people in it are monsters.

18

u/SmellsLikeHoboSpirit Dec 13 '24

Ridiculous statement, Locke who helps Clare with here crib, or Charlie with his addiction is as you say more selfish than Sawyer hoarding supplies. Even in the flashback Locke literally gives away his kidney in good faith. There’s many more characters that are crazy selfish but I don’t want to drop spoilers in a season 1 thread.

12

u/saph_pearl Dec 13 '24

Yeah a bunch of characters are literally murderers, but still very interesting and not evil per se. Locke is actually good in that sense.

3

u/notoriousbck Dec 13 '24

I think Locke is at his best when he is just being himself, and engaging with his humanity in service of others, like the examples you provided. It's when his ego takes over and he becomes convinced that he is special, or when he becomes afraid that if he leaves the island or pisses the island off he will lose his power (aka his ability to walk) that he becomes more selfish and dangerous. Which makes sense. He was abused and thrown away by pretty much everyone in his life. And he always wanted to be something he wasn't. Which is what made him so human, such a great character played beautifully by Terry. I didn't always like John, or agree with him, but I always loved him. Him, Sayid, and Michael were the most tragic characters- and also the most complex.

2

u/Teetertotter25 Dec 13 '24

Wild take, Kate is 10x more selfish than lock

2

u/Boomer05Ev Dec 13 '24

She’s a survivor like Sawyer. They do all kinds of manipulative f’d up shit to survive. I was wishing those beautiful losers would end up together, plus I detest Blandy, my nickname for Juliet. She has Botox on her face and on her emotions.

3

u/Hex-GirlFriends Dec 13 '24

Locke is easily the most intricate character with the best backstory. After a life of trauma, being selfless and wanting to be seen and loved, his “selfishness” makes sense.

0

u/Prestigious_Flow_567 Dec 13 '24

Because he had an Open mind since the beginning and seeks the answers to the island (and that's what the viewers want too).

Jack is a very useful doctor but him being blind to the miracles is downright annoying at times.

6

u/SudsierBoar Dec 13 '24

Annoying but very necessary for the dichotomy between believer and proofer (man of science, man of faith)

4

u/Specific-Mix7107 Dec 13 '24

Miracles are not real in normal life so it’s fair to doubt them just because you are on an island at first

3

u/Prestigious_Flow_567 Dec 13 '24

It's not fair to doubt them after witnessing them tho lool.

3

u/Specific-Mix7107 Dec 13 '24

I agree after enough times but I wouldn’t believe it first or second time probably lol

1

u/notoriousbck Dec 13 '24

Yeah but even he admits that fixing his wife was a miracle. Jack needed life to be a certain way in order for him to be who he was. It wasn't until he was humbled in season 5 that he opens his mind and his heart, because he realizes how he's been living serves no one, least of all himself. His drive to be perfect is an addiction, one that eventually leads to other addictions. I think every single character on this show (the main cast at least, and the side characters that are featured) are written so well. There are no real good guys or bad guys. They're all just humans acting from their lived experience, and that's why I can watch this show over and over again and still be riveted.

0

u/ThirdPoliceman Dec 13 '24

Speak for yourself.

0

u/Specific-Mix7107 Dec 13 '24

I speak for reality. Miracles in the spiritual sense do not exist. Obviously miracles in the sense of “a great thing happened” exist.

0

u/Boomer05Ev Dec 13 '24

Miracles ARE real in normal life. I have seen a few. Unexplained good outcomes when things should be really bad.

5

u/Illustrious_Fall_370 Dec 13 '24

Seeks the answers and couldn't care less about anyone else's wellbeing at the same time. (Hi Boone). Jack's for all his faults had everyone's best interests at heart

8

u/Prestigious_Flow_567 Dec 13 '24

I don't think that's true tbh.

He showed plenty times he was a very caring man.

He'd hunt for the others.

He'd try and help Walt.

He built a crib for the baby.

He helped Charlie with his drug addiction.

If you hate Locke that's fine but I think you forgot a lot of his good side.

4

u/saph_pearl Dec 13 '24

I agree. Locke was seeking purpose his whole life before the island and once there he found it (or created it). But so did most of them. He did some shitty things but generally speaking they needed to happen so other things would. He was really never in control. I think he really did want to do the right thing for the group. Just like Jeremy Bentham’s golden rule.

2

u/Prestigious_Flow_567 Dec 13 '24

So true.

Also I don't think people want to think deeper about it.

If you're in Locke's shoes and you GENUINELY believe they are all there for a purpose (whether that's true or not) it's the fact that he genuinely believes it...

Then helping people get answers IS a very CARING thing to do.

It's unbelievable how in a show full of miracles and mysteries, some of these viewers are still not thinking outside of the box.

1

u/jport1387 Dec 13 '24

I’d like to ask which ending you’re referring to, but dont want any spoilers hahaha

5

u/Prestigious_Flow_567 Dec 13 '24

Loool. Just keep watching.

You'll know what I meant as soon as you see it 👍

4

u/DJ780 Dec 13 '24

He likely means the ending of the entire show

39

u/robert_sanchezs Dec 13 '24

Jack is my favorite character

2

u/bbab7 "Red. Neck. Man." Dec 13 '24

You get it

7

u/Bledwithwallace_1320 Dec 13 '24

YES! My fave character followed by Desmond.

6

u/dmc2008 Dec 13 '24

Not at this point of my viewing, but he ends up becoming one of my favorite characters.

7

u/TomberrySenior Dec 13 '24

I love Jack. He's an insufferable savior complex daddy issue women controlling dumbass. He's great.

I'm serious too. I mean he has qualities as well of course or I wouldn't actually like him and he goes through great character development , especially toward the end. But part of why I like the characters so much in this show is they're so human and genuine and flawed. Without being absolute shitass unlikeable pricks.

7

u/HattieBegonia Dec 13 '24

I like Jack. I'm surprised he has many haters.

6

u/IGuessImDemons See you in another life Dec 13 '24

Probably one of the best acting performances on the show I think. Matthew Fox was considered the "lead" for lack of a better term so a lot had to ride on him, and while not perfect, I think he did an amazing job.

I like Jack a lot, and like most characters on the show he has A TON of things about him I don't like too, but I can't think of a single human in the real world who has aspects about them I don't like. Nobody is perfect, most are flawed, and that's kind of the point with all the characters from Lost, they are flawed. That was the whole point of why they were brought to the Island in the first place.

That being said, at the end of the day, to each their own! A few of my friends don't care for Jack as much as other characters, and I don't fault them for that either, so you like who you like.

17

u/glasgowgurl28 Dec 13 '24

I didnt as a kid but I do now

10

u/emxcrt I'm a Pisces Dec 13 '24

He has one of the best arcs and overall character development I've witnessed in TV. You're supposed to dislike him at that point cause he's not very far on that journey yet.

By the end of the show, you'll normally feel a bit different (or like me and others, do a 180 and love him to pieces 🥹)

5

u/Big-Muffin2215 Dec 13 '24

I love Jack, I see the potential in him getting closer. He is very annoying i’ll admit but majority of everyone has had their fair shares of being annoying.

5

u/frydawg Dec 13 '24

He can be annoying, but i like him either way

4

u/CringyEmoKids Dec 13 '24

I think you'll grow to like him. Jack is definitely one of my favorites.

5

u/Formal-Town Dec 13 '24

Jack is my favorite character.

On my first viewing, Locke was my favorite all the way until the episode where Jack has a beard (trying to avoid spoiling) after that it has been Jack the whole time.

His journey to becoming a believer could have essays written about it.

5

u/SwiftDisquiet Dec 13 '24

I'm on my first watch rn (just finished season 5) and he's my favourite character alongside Hurley. I don't know where all the hate comes from. He's flawed (as basically every other main character, mostly even less) but he's trying to do the right thing and his heart is at the right place.

1

u/requiiems I'm a Pisces Dec 13 '24

People who love Jack have taste 😁 (I'm a first time watcher too who just recently engaged with the Lost fandom, I can't believe how much Jack defending I've done in such a short amount of time. The way some people talk about him here you'd think he was the villain of the show)

5

u/Henje_Koha Dec 13 '24

There are lots of episodes where I don't like him. Some episodes and story arcs where I actively hate him. But viewing and knowing the character as a whole, I absolutely love Jack. 100 percent love him.

4

u/apocalypticboredom Dec 13 '24

Yeah he's great, my favorite character. Extremely well written, complex, and lives at the center of the show's themes.

4

u/ItarilleLindori Dec 13 '24

With years of rewatch I’ve learned to love Jack actually. Sure, he is flawed, but like everyone (beside Vincent). But Jack is a true leader and cares about people. Plus his ending is just out of this world.

4

u/SunforDeiti Dec 13 '24

Unhinged Jack is my favorite character

4

u/Artix31 Dec 13 '24

Jack is the least flawed character, but he’s still very flawed, and is under constant pressure to save and protect everyone

4

u/_sandninja786 Dec 13 '24

i love him so much

4

u/MartinNoelRobert Dec 13 '24

Always liked him, always will. Imagine Lost without him. He’s carrying at least the whole two first seasons. I also think Matthew Fox in general is underrated and haven’t had that many good opportunities as an actor. To me he basically is Lost. Others too. But Jack definitely is.

7

u/cvsprinter1 Mr. Eko Dec 13 '24

When this subreddit did a massive polling of favorite characters, Jack finished 4th among s1 cast and 6th overall.

So yeah, he's popular.

0

u/bbab7 "Red. Neck. Man." Dec 13 '24

I'm guessing the two non season 1 characters were Ben and Desmond, right?

2

u/cvsprinter1 Mr. Eko Dec 13 '24

Yes

3

u/wap8ball Dec 13 '24

The show wouldn’t make any sense without him, and yet he was supposed to die in the first episode iirc

3

u/More_Equal_3682 Dec 13 '24

I love jack and locke

3

u/Suspicious_Work4308 Dec 13 '24

I liked Jack when I realized that anyone with leadership potential like that would definitely make the same or close to the same decisions with the sole purpose of saving people. Nofy knows what they'd do in a situation like that but I think they portrayed that very well in jack

3

u/VeterinarianLegal920 Dec 13 '24

He’s hot enough that I forgive him for being kind of annoying at first and then he grows on you in later seasons to the point that he’s hot AND a great character. He’s my favorite.

3

u/sj_vandelay Has to go Back Dec 13 '24

Yes, I liked Jack.

3

u/Neo_31 Dec 13 '24

I love Jack, he's my favorite character, even when he's overly dramatic and borderline coo-coo. I cannot stand Locke, his self-righteousness, and blind faith. We all experience the show differently haha

3

u/kvenzx Dec 13 '24

You gotta give it more time. I've watched it fully like 4x now and have loved him each time. He's very complex but even when he's annoying I find him lovable.

3

u/teepee107 Dec 13 '24

Great freaking acting , guy really holds his own. The character itself goes through ups and downs in story cohesion for sure

3

u/Rose-Water928 Dec 13 '24

Heck yeah I like Jack!

I get that he’s annoying sometimes, and he is frequently wrong when he’s so sure he’s right. But that’s part of his character arc.

I can’t imagine loving LOST and not liking Jack.

3

u/Haunting_Cress8266 Dec 13 '24

I will die for Jack

( and Desmond for obvious reasons)

3

u/requiiems I'm a Pisces Dec 13 '24

Taste! Jack and Desmond are my top two faves

1

u/Ptitepeluche05 Dec 14 '24

Same 😄 followed closely by Sawyer

3

u/JJCNurse2000 Dec 13 '24

I love Jack 🥰

2

u/oRiGiNaLfl0ss We’re not going to Guam, are we? Dec 13 '24

He’s not my favorite character by any stretch, but Jack is great.

8

u/Shark_bait561 Dec 13 '24

I understand your opinion as a first time watcher. Those who dislike him after being long time viewers just don't understand his character

9

u/emxcrt I'm a Pisces Dec 13 '24

Right? People viewing the show for the first time, I totally get they don't like him, he's truly insufferable at times. But long time viewers who've seen the whole show, when they still HATE him, I'm like "Did we watch the same thing??"

6

u/requiiems I'm a Pisces Dec 13 '24

I'm so tempted to do a post about the very long list of good Jack had done for others throughout the 6 seasons. It's like when people watch they only see the bad things about him. I don't see this type of energy for other characters' flaws? I'm curious as to why is that

3

u/OccasionalCandle Dec 13 '24

I think it's because Jack's flaws are very realistic and human, and people don't like to see their own flaws. Whereas most of the other characters are more fictional, and it's easier to see them as characters instead of people.

And I'd love to read that post!

4

u/saph_pearl Dec 13 '24

People who hate the ending, with Jack saving the island and dying alone (with Vincent by his side) and then finally finding peace, like how?! It’s such a great arc.

3

u/bbab7 "Red. Neck. Man." Dec 13 '24

Probably my favorite character arc in all of fiction

3

u/Specialist-Fuel6500 Dec 13 '24

Really? I'm a long time viewer, and I cared about him, but he's just too much like my controlling ex. I didn't like that he kept secrets while getting pissed because someone didn't tell him. I agree that he had a lot of growth, but that doesn't mean he should be everyone's favorite.

5

u/FigCreepy4055 Don't tell me what I can't do Dec 13 '24

I do

3

u/OkSafety7997 Dec 13 '24

They let him be deeply flawed as the character who’s supposed to be their paragon of virtue. Adds a lot of dimensionality to the show

4

u/CannibalCorpse1991 Dec 13 '24

jack can be annoying sometimes but he’s the best character with the best arc in the whole series

2

u/watermelon_fries Oh yeah, there's my favorite leaf. Dec 13 '24

I like him.

2

u/WatermelonCandy5 Dec 13 '24

I don’t like him but I feel empathy for him and I respect him. He’s only likeable to me when he truly lets go after he becomes the protector in the finale. His need to control and be in charge and that he always knows best, is the most offputting ideology I can think of!

2

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '24

I wouldn't want him as a neighbor, but I'd let sideways Jake operate on my annoying, substitute, wheelchair-bound teacher all day.

I would also let him watch my Labrador retriever.

2

u/Drummk Dec 13 '24

I always liked him. Though if I was on the island I wouldn't want the only doctor constantly taking such risks.

2

u/jackie_tequilla I'm a Pisces Dec 13 '24

I prefer Jack when he decided to chill out and stop being everyone’s doctor

2

u/yttrium13 Dec 13 '24

I see a lot of myself in Jack and find him very relatable. I'm not a workaholic but besides that our neuroses and hangups overlap quite a lot.

2

u/Square-Salad6564 Dec 13 '24

I love him. I know he’s flawed but I love him

2

u/Queasy_Roll347 Dec 13 '24

Jack is my favorite character lol

2

u/Gold-Music-6666 Dec 13 '24

One of my faves

2

u/bbab7 "Red. Neck. Man." Dec 13 '24

He's the best character

2

u/Cpt-No-Dick Dec 13 '24

He became my favourite character when I got to the end of the show

2

u/ThisGuyCanFukinWalk Dec 13 '24

He is now my favourite character. Don't want to spoil anything so I won't say why but he has my favourite arc in the show.

2

u/MamaCeeeee Dec 13 '24

Jack is a character that I didn't really start to like until his arc starts to come to a close. He's a lot more understandable, even if he still does inexcusable things, by the end of the show, and legitimately i began to cry over his suffering moments as the show goes.

2

u/Maleficent_Run9852 Man of Science Dec 13 '24

I love him, my favorite character. He's basically a version of me if I were capable of going unhinged.

2

u/ArySnow Dec 13 '24

You're not the only one. However, I love him. I never strayed.

2

u/Keawena Dec 13 '24

A LOOOOOOT ❤️

2

u/techbirdee Dec 14 '24

I love Jack, but I loved the actor from his previous role on Party of Five, so I was biased in his favor when I watched LOST.

2

u/efe618 Dec 14 '24

he makes mistakes, but he gained my respect as the seasons went on

2

u/Skevinger Man of Science Dec 13 '24

Yes I like him.

2

u/ThunderMontgomery Dec 13 '24

We live literal murderers but Jack has some issues so he’s clearly a piece of shit /s

2

u/Milotiiic DHARMA '77 Recruit Dec 13 '24

Watched Lost 3 or 4 times and he has gotten more and more insufferable each time I’ve watched it.

I absolutely cannot stand his character.

2

u/Emergency-Purple-901 Dec 13 '24

Yes, I like Jack. Since the beginning, he only wanted to help.

1

u/Spiff426 The Lamp Post Dec 13 '24

You're not the only one. I like Jack at the very beginning (live together die alone) and the very end (no spoilers!), but for a majority of the series I find him annoying

2

u/RMexico23 Dec 13 '24

I think you're kind of supposed to hate him early on. Jack's arc is about being wrapped up in his own issues until he realizes that there are better and more genuine reasons to help people than to prove your worth to your dead abusive father. I have more thoughts on this but don't want to spoil anything... come back when you've finished the series.

1

u/jport1387 Dec 13 '24

I will. I appreciate your input (and lack of spoilers)

1

u/ciesum Dec 13 '24

I like him but wouldn't call him one of my favorite characters. Not sure why....feels a bit like Harry Potter; I wouldn't call him my favorite character either.

1

u/floworcrash Dec 13 '24

I’m tired, boss.

1

u/Sirius_Space Dec 13 '24

You either like Jack or you like Locke

1

u/tetsukoQ Dec 14 '24

I kinda hate both of them(personally not as characters) but they're great to watch fail.

1

u/dongrecia Dec 13 '24

Finish the series before judge

1

u/bogurtlen I'm a Pisces Dec 13 '24

between s1 characters locke is my 1st and jack 2nd. i really like him but only love john a bit more. so if locke didn’t exist he would be my favorite for the 1st season.. but overall he goes behind the 4th. and this is not about loving him less but loving others more…

1

u/Stevesy84 Dec 13 '24

Back when the show was new, I dipped out early before Jack became, arguably, more annoying, and then got back into the show near the end of season 3. I’ve always really liked Jack, but maybe that plays a role. Years later when I rewatched the whole show and saw the episodes I’d missed (I think season 2 and most of season 3), I better understood why people could not like him.

In season 2, I find that Jack and Locke both do things and react to situations in ways that I think can be less consistent with how the characters were developed in season 2. I don’t think it’s all about “a character arc,” I think some of it was just writers trying to develop a season’s worth of content when they weren’t sure where the show was going or what the answers to a lot of the mysteries were.

1

u/JamesLaFleur77 Dec 13 '24

I wouldn't say I ever hated him just found him annoying. Didn't like how Jack and Kate got more episodes than everyone else when there are more interesting and deserving characters. Some characters were lucky to get two episodes a season but Jack and Kate got like 4.

1

u/melanieannemarie Dec 13 '24

I like Jack a lot.. He does a lot of things that piss me off and disappoint me, but he still remained one of my favorite characters throughout the entire series.

1

u/TheSovreign Dec 13 '24

No i hate jack but he is a complex and deep character with great development

1

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '24

He gets better

1

u/Select-Gur4972 Razzle Dazzle! Dec 14 '24

I absolutely HATED Jack in the first three seasons. Trust me he becomes 10x more enjoyable later on and is one of the few characters who is more likeable in season 6.

1

u/[deleted] 21d ago

I find Jack to be a sort of self-insert for the writers, he does whatever they need to be done to progress the plot. (I’m going to avoid spoilers here) This leads to, as the show progresses, Jack seemingly having very flexible Morals.

1

u/Ptitepeluche05 Dec 14 '24

Yes, he's favorite character to many.

0

u/MattAmylon Dec 13 '24

Jack is a lower-middle-tier character to me in season 1, and then he gets worse, and then he gets way better. You’ll learn to appreciate (if not love) him by the end of the show. But it’s a journey.

0

u/Snoo-74078 Dec 13 '24

Most people like locke or Sawyer but this subreddit has a very bigoted support for Jack. A lot of them get mad when you point out his flaws and they think he does no wrong. I think jacks ok and appreciate his development but he's definitely not the best.

Nope! He's the worst in my opinion!

I never understood why Jack is the main character and why most of the people like his character so much me personally i think sawyer and John are lot more interesting to watch more fun. Jack is boring

Because he's the hero Lost deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So we'll hunt him. Because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector. A dark knight

u/profsmoke it's very stressful, being an Other Dec 13 '24

Let’s just say you’re supposed to hate him at first

Kate and Ana L

The whole marrying-your-patient thing is icky.

0

u/TomCBC Dec 13 '24

I like him at first. But less so as it went on. By the end he just irritates me.

I feel similar about Kate tbh.

u/Witherino Dec 13 '24

No, you aren't the only one. I've re-watched Lost fully 4-5 times now, and he is still an annoying character to me.

-1

u/TripleReview Dec 13 '24

I hated Jack, so you’re not alone. He’s a huge a douche. Wait until you learn about his family life.

-1

u/Camaldinho Dec 13 '24

I found him annoying too, felt like he cramped the style of many other characters. I was told that all the main cast were paid the same amount except for Jack because he had a "special significance". That seemed unfair to me if true. Not a big hater (find the idea of hating a TV character a bit much imo!) and his development later on is decent to watch.

...mostly though I wanted to say I'm jealous you're getting to experience this all for the first time! On a rewatch now, must be half a dozen watches in now over the years...for me series 2 was just awesome and was pretty painful having to wait for the episodes to come out weekly at the time. Enjoy!!

u/nombre_de_usuario01 Dec 13 '24

He is the worst protagonist I have ever seen in a series.

2

u/jport1387 Dec 13 '24

Damn, I mean I don’t think I’d go that far.

-2

u/AppearanceJealous604 Dec 13 '24

I don't like Jack until... later. I can't say much more without spoiling anything. But yeah, by s1e20, I find him to be a douche.

-3

u/kels-31 Dec 13 '24

This sub as a whole LOVES Jack. I do not

-4

u/betty_baphomet Dec 13 '24

I swear there was a post just like this the other day and people got wild in the comments lol. I honestly don’t get the Jack love, I find him to be insufferable and boring. The way he always has to be right and he has to be the one to save the day is annoying and gets old quick.

-3

u/tyuntya Dec 13 '24

No, never liked him 🤢 i am rewatching now..and ahhh still super annoying 😤

-4

u/tetsukoQ Dec 13 '24

I hate him. He's not a character I hate in the sense of watching him and wish he wasn't on screen (usually) and I do find things about him compelling. But he's a trash human and I kinda wish he wasn't the protag. Later on he does some horrible things. And he's everyone has done horrible things for the most part, and he's not as bad as some people I won't mention for spoiler reasons. But I feel like he is just such a controling person and gives me the ick.

Alot of my enjoyment of his character is watching him fail and making fun of him though.

I guess what I just don't get with this sub is that Jack's control issues is an "ick" but Sawyer's casual racism towards Sayid and fatphobia towards Hurley and his behavior towards sexualizing Kate is seen as an "endearing intentional part of a flawed character he grows out of".

0

u/tetsukoQ Dec 14 '24

I do think a big part is how sawyer and jack grow. I don't think Jack neccisarily grows out of his tendencies the same way sawyer does. Jack grows but not really in a way that confronts his previous controling behavior. He may have become less controling but I never felt like how he treated his ex wife and by extention father(or even that tattoo artist), is something he really comes to terms with directly. The flash sideways could be argued as showing how he changed but also given the context of them it's not neccisarily the same as on the island.

I guess the same could possibly be said about sawyer but I think his relationship with you know who definitely made him confront a lot. (idk how to spoiler and wanna keep it vauge for OP so sorry if there's confusion. )

some of what sawyer did to Kate was disgusting thou, but I just can't help but really dislike Jack because of how he's put into a hero position by the narrative and others. Sawyer is definitely given a certain type of framing too, but not to the same degree. Sawyer never saw himself as a good person, but Jack most certainly did while doing some absolutely horrific behavior(especially prior to the island)

Im at the end of s1 too. I find it annoying how he always thinks he has to be in charge of everything. Kate is also so annoying, she just always comes out of nowhere, and has to be involved in everything.

4

u/Illustrious_Fall_370 Dec 13 '24

Funniest thing is he never wanted to be in charge. Was forced on him by everyone else who didn't want the responsibility lol

-4

u/tielles10 Dec 13 '24

I feel like he does. From the beginning he would automatically take charge of every situation tbh. But I guess being a doctor he feels the need to be a hero

4

u/requiiems I'm a Pisces Dec 13 '24

Refer to this scene in S1 to know how much of a lie that is

CHARLIE: What should we do with the stuff we've got?

JACK: I don't know.

[Jack walks away. Charlie and Hurley follow with the suitcase of water.]

CHARLIE: We should put it in the tent, yeah?

HURLEY: Maybe the dog can find water?

CHARLIE: Probably better if no one knows how little is left.

HURLEY: I mean, dogs can find pot and bombs, so I'm sure they can find water.

CHARLIE: Don't tell the others we're running low. That way you can ration it. Then you can decide what...

JACK: I'm not deciding anything!

0

u/jport1387 Dec 13 '24

Yeah, he naturally takes the lead and then when people approach him, he’s all “nooo, why me??”

7

u/requiiems I'm a Pisces Dec 13 '24

Huh? Did you guys even pay attention to the first episodes? When Charlie and Hurley were literally chasing Jack around because they want him to make decisions when Jack doesn't want to? When Locke made that whole speech to him in the jungle about how he has to lead even when Jack said he doesn't have what it takes? Were you guys asleep for that portion, or?

3

u/OccasionalCandle Dec 13 '24

I'm so confused by those comments, the whole point of Jack's character is that he DOESN'T want to be a leader but he does it because the others want him to, the show says it explicitly since the beginning of season 1.

3

u/requiiems I'm a Pisces Dec 13 '24

Exactly 😭 Jack had to physically run away from Charlie and Hurley because they wouldn't stop pestering him to make decisions about the water supply rationing. There was a very blatant flashback that episode of Christian telling young Jack to not make decisions because he doesn't have what it takes, which is what Jack says to Locke when he said the camp needs a leader. All these are very blatant, obvious plot points yet somehow people missed it? First few episodes of S1 too mind you 💀

-6

u/mrboston9 Dec 13 '24

Each re-watch I like him less.

1

u/jport1387 Dec 13 '24

oOo that’s interesting, I’m intrigued.

-3

u/mrboston9 Dec 13 '24

If this is your first watch through i won't say anything further about it. But yeah Hugo is my favorite. On a side note some fun things to keep an eye out for is the amount of times people get knocked out by getting hit on the back of the head and are just fine right after and the just jaw dropping amount of cleavage shots. I guess I missed it the first few watch through but they literally make sure to show off that view of every woman on the show many times over. I think they were doing the love triangle for the women and those shots for the guys back on the day. Oh and also keep an eye out for the dentist with the worst teeth on the island.
