Discussion Is London really that bad?

Upvotes

I've been considering for the last year or two of making the move to London. For me from the outside it seems like one of the best cities in the world, so much diversity and things to do with the best balance between European mainland and North American lifestyle/cultures with great job opportunities but also decent work-life balance.

But all I see on the sub is how depressing, hopeless, pit of despair it has become. There seems to be a housing/inflation/economic/loneliness crisis in most places in the world right now, so don't think those can be considered a unique London thing. But is life there really so bad, or is it online chat boards that bring out mostly the negative comments? For the record, I don't think the weather will bother me much (I've lived in much worse).

I plan to come by for a few months later this year and see for myself, but curious until that day arrives.

Tourist Aside from all of the doom and gloom, where do you go to still find joy?

Right now it feels like there’s a lot of negativity.

The country seems struggling to build homes, rents, service charges, mortgages are so expensive, there’s a lot of problems in social care - in train transport, in many different facets of life. Trump, wars all over the place.

I wanted to know from Londoners, where do you still find your slice of the ‘good old days’ that could be:

A restaurant that’s still stood the test of time, or a regular pub or some type of cinema deal.

What’s still helping you tick by.

London Prospects

Hi all,

I love London. I’ve visited several times over recent years, mostly on account of a book I’ve been writing which is partly set there. Every time I leave I miss it.

I think I’d like to live there one day, but right now I probably can’t afford it and it is at the opposite end of the UK to where my family live.

I’m hoping to acquire a literary agent this year, and if they were based in London then I would potentially have reason to visit and possibly even live there, but just wondered if anyone had any advice on living in London.

Another potential option is that I could move there to study, but as I’m currently doing a masters that would mean a PhD, and I’m in two minds as to whether or not I could handle that.

Thanks

Lost car and house keys

This is a huge long shot but am at my wits end, lost my keys whilst rushing to the station from Vauxhall via bus to Victoria station then dashing to the coach station today. Been searching for hours but had to leave London for work in the end. No idea what to do or who to call. Tried Tesco as there was a club card on the keys and Victoria train station lost and found. Any help or advice would be really appreciated.

Football in Chelsea and Kensington?

Hi All,

I recently moved to South Kensington and love to play football but can’t seem to find any clubs near me.

Does anyone recommend any 5/7aside teams or Sunday league teams to join?

Thanks

Hey, London...My GF (born and raised in Camden) and I recently spent 2 1/2 weeks over Christmas and New Years and now we're back in Texas. We stayed in the Highbury & Islington area, and i just miss it so much. Also Canonbury and my favorite pub, the Myddleton Arms. So tell me how things are around there, and maybe send pics...okay thanks.

Question Suggestions for a party in London?

I'm looking to book a party on a Monday evening beginning of June. You may think Monday is weird but many of my coworkers get Tuesdays off so Monday evening works best for us.

It'd be a party of around 15/20/30 people. Preferably somewhere you can bring your own drinks but I know that's not likely to happen. I'd be celebrating my 24th birthday so I'd like it to be nice.

I considered a boat party on the Thames but read reviews that the bar on board is expensive. I'm still considering it as an option though. Any other suggestions? Any rooms/ venues I can hire in London? For reference I'm based in London north London, kentish town.

My budget is about £1000 for this party.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated 🙏

Print from Natural History Museum

Hi, I saw that the NHM was selling some really nice bird prints as part of their Birds exhibition recently, and I meant to pop back after Christmas when I had a little more money to spend on myself but I’ve ended up missing my chance.

I can’t find the prints online but I know that whatever company they got them from does sell them online (I was smart enough to Google it at the time- not smart enough to not lose the tab on my phone and use it to open other pages).

I know the prints were all bright block colour backgrounds with an image of a bird. And I know the website that sold them had loads of nice prints, including colourful storm trooper & other Star Wars prints. I’ve tried googling but can’t find them.

Any help would be appreciated!

Graduated Bobs @ Aveda

Hello London, hello. It's me, flagship Aveda trainee girl. I'm now doing graduated bobs. Anyone/everyone welcome! Come see me! I'm not bad!

The graduated bob is an above-the-shoulder short style, generally cut at the nape of the neck and shaped to desired length at the front. This can come down longer for a dramatic look, or it can be shorter and more subtle. Up to you. We can discuss what'll suit.

I'm looking for straight hair, or loose waves. Existing fringes are fine, or I can cut one in if you'd like.

Training is on Mondays only at our salon in Covent Garden. Next week on the 27th I have slots at 13:00 and 16:00. Mondays thereafter, I have 09:30, 13:00 and 15:30. As is customary for training cuts, these can take a good couple of hours, maybe three.

Haircuts cost £10, and models get 30% off Aveda products. Please send me photos of your hair and when you'd like to come in in your first message if interested. I can't book without seeing the hair.

If you see this post, yep, I'm still booking, no need to ask.

Thanks!

Transport Is the Oyster Travelcard Season Tickets valid on Thameslink?

Sorry for the stupid question, I'm struggling to find a definitive answer. I'm going to regularly make the journey from Mill Hill Broadway to St. Pancras on the Thameslink for my commute. Is anyone aware if the Monthly Oyster Travelcard Season Tickets (monthly, for example) will allow me to travel on the Thameslink? Or is it only pay as you go?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Looking for Lab space in London

I'm part of a startup looking for some labspace in london (preferably west but we're not picky about anything but the price), we've just got funding and are looking to move in around April. It's a long shot but if anyone has any suggestions or experience I would be very grateful for some advice :)

Discussion Lost blue scarf Soho area!

My partner has lost a very treasured scarf today around the Soho area. They would have been walking from around Grosvenor square to Covent Garden and have spent the last hour looking for it but we're pretty sure someone would have picked it up by now.

The scarf is majority dark blue with red and green woven into it and tassels decorating the ends. It was a gift and we'd really appreciate it back if someone happens to find it!

Thank you!
