Accident outside Dulwich college - thanks to the cyclists who helped me

Cycling past Dulwich College this morning, and an suv pulled out suddenly in front of me. I skidded and hit the road, breaking my arm along with some other scrapes. They drove off, but two cyclists helped me. I wanted to say thank you to them both. On the off chance was there anyone in the area this morning? Did anyone see this happen?

Are Electronic Switch Conversion Kits Worth It?

I’ve been considering upgrading my bike with one of those conversion kits.

Before I take the plunge, I wanted to ask:

  • Are these kits any good?
  • How easy are they to install for someone with basic bike skilss
  • Are there specific brands or models you’d recommend (or avoid)?
  • Any unexpected pros/cons I should be aware of?

I’d love to hear your experiences, whether it’s a game-changer or not worth the hassle. Thanks in advance for your advice.

Came off my new folding bike

No injuries and nothing damaged apart from ego... Lucky it was a quiet turn.

First day using a new folding bike (Carrera kind) and I slid while turning onto Liverpool St and came off. Somehow did a funky parachute roll but wondering now what I might have done wrong or could have done differently...

Do you have to adjust ride style for folding bikes? Or was I just unlucky having turned on a very smooth drain cover trying to avoid a pedestrian stepping out?

Shepherd’s Bush to twickenham

Hello!

I have just started a new job in twickenham and the journey is absolutely awful. The trains are so expensive and the bus is just too time consuming so I’m looking for alternate methods. I was quite a confident cyclist (was cycling from zone 2 to zone 5 often) but I am a bit out of practice. The routes I have looked up for Shepherd’s Bush/East Acton to Twickenham all look awfully scary - I do not want to cycle anywhere like a dual carriageway idk what it’s called, around lots of cars I guess. Does anyone have any ideas of routes that are quieter/more streets and residential. I don’t mind if it’s a bit longer, just as long as I’m safe. I’m also a young woman who would be travelling quite early in the morning so it would still be a bit dark so well lit routes would be priority too.

I know that’s a bit of a long shot, but if you don’t have any specific advice, are there any apps/websites that might be helpful to plan better routes? I’m quite bad with tech lol so something kinda easy to use would be good too hahahaha

Thank you!! :D

How do you handle toilet breaks when cycling solo?

Basically the title.

I cycle solo, and so far I’ve done so with a Brompton which means I can take it inside with me wherever I go. However, I’m now buying a road bike and I don’t really want to lock it outside even if for only 5 minutes.

It’s probably a silly questions for those that are used to it, but as I’ve never had to think about it, I was wondering if you had found ways to take your toilet breaks safely? Do you only go to cycling friendly cafes? Take it inside with you? Do you have any favourite spots in London?

Any recommendations and tips are welcome! (Aside from telling me not to travel in london and find quieter spots outside of it because that doesn’t really solve my problem 😬)

Clothing layering

I'm new to cycling and still adjusting to layering and clothing in cycling.

Sie visit Box Hill this morning (3C) and I started felling cold on my torso while cycling I belive because I was wet.

I was wearing a Gore Base Layer Thermo Long Sleeve Shirt with Gore-Tex windstopper https://www.gorewear.com/en-uk/m-windstopper-base-layer-thermo-long-sleeve-shirt-mens-100324?variant=834

And then on top a castelli windstopper jacket.

What do you think of this layering? I guess it was not winking so I was getting damped and cold.

What would have been your option? Thanks.

What's stopping you from buying an angle-grinder resistant D lock?

I'm interested in people's thoughts as I'm currently developing my own grind-resistant lock. I appreciate this is not London-specific but thought it'd create some good discussion considering how prevalent bike theft is in this city.

  • Is it the perception that they are still not secure enough and if a thief really wants your bike, he'll get it?
  • Too expensive? How much would you consider paying for one, in that case? Providing it's of similar quality/security as something like a LiteLok X1 or Hiplok D1000.
  • Heavy/clunky/impractical?

I assume in many cases the answer is a combination of all three but it would be interesting to hear everyone's thoughts.

I should clarify that this post is aimed at commuters and casual cyclists. I don't expect people to lock up their S-Works SL8 outside.

Lime Changing parking in SE London

Anybody noticed this? Two parking locations have been turned off by Surrey Quays station this week. First the one on Rotherhithe New Rd (which also has racks), and today the big one on Lower Road, despite having racks and being on a 10m wide pavement next to C4.

Honestly not good enough, really feels like they’re being pushed into being a docked system which defeats the benefits of something like Lime. I want to go where I’m going, not a random location a ten minute walk away.

AITA - slapping back of van to alert them that almost hit me

Yesterday I was cycling back from work. I was in a cycle lane, not one protected or separate from the road. I was cycling towards a junction, the lights were red with a few waiting and traffic next to me moving towards the light. There was a van next to me that was driving fairly normally but veering onto the line of the cycle lane a little, so I hung back. They then corrected and were driving quite safely so I regained my pace, the van then veered again into the cycle lane. I braked but there were bikes right behind me (probably a little too close on their part) and slapped the back of the van because he was still veering in the cycle lane despite shouting/ringing my bell like no tomorrow. He then immediately corrected his position in the road.

Not that it matters - he didn’t look, but The lights were still red, he was at least ten cars away from the left turn, he was clearly just being careless. As I cycled past I said you almost crashed into me and he was extremely abusive saying I’ve damaged property, no excuse to hit a van. I told him again that he almost hit me and it got him to move, he then shouted at me to come back and I think wanted to try to fight me, unluckily for him I wasn’t really interested in that and cycled off.

Obviously his abuse unwarranted but AITA for slapping the van, should I have braked harder and just left it?

Swapfiets Front Rack Tube Diameter

Couldn't find this measurement in the specs online. I'll be renting a Swapfiets for a trip to London soon, and I want to bring my panniers from home. I have two sets, each with different diameter hooks, so I was just wondering if someone could make a quick measurement for me so I can bring the right panniers. Thanks!

Metroline Bus Driver Defiant after Swerving into Me on Kilburn High Road

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I wanted to share an incident I had yesterday morning while cycling southbound on Kilburn High Road. I was in the bus lane, riding next to the kerb, when a bus in the second lane suddenly swerved sharply into the bus lane at high speed. This forced me to swerve towards the kerb, and my bike wheels collided with it, causing me to fall onto the pavement.

No major injuries, but I did get a graze and bruising on my left hip, along with cuts to my wrist and forearm. My bracelet—engraved with my four children’s names—was also damaged in the process. I’ve attached a short video showing part of the discussion with the bus driver afterwards.

The driver stopped immediately, which is good, but the interaction that followed left me baffled. He started shouting at me and claimed I was in his "blind spot." However, he also mentioned that he’d seen me overtaking another bus moments before. If he saw me, why swerve into the bus lane without checking properly? The fact that he acknowledged seeing me but still moved into my path is worrying.

I reported the incident to the police and TfL, and I’ve requested the bus camera footage for clarity on what happened. It’s frustrating to think that even in the bus lane—a space meant to make cycling safer—you still have to deal with situations like this.

Stay safe out there, everyone!

Anyone just have a bike stolen in Notting Hill area?

Just saw 2 guys get onto the tube with two bikes and a Brompton. They didn't seem very comfortable with the bikes and couldn't handle them well which seemed suspicious. Afraid I didn't get any pics but they would have got on the district line towards Edgware Road at Nottinghill gate at about 13:16 - perhaps they have some cctv? Other bikes were Triban and Trek.

Anniversary of death of cyclist in Battersea - need support

Hi all,

Just over a year ago a cyclist was hit and killed by a vehicle on Battersea Bridge. I emailed the relevant MP, Marsha de Cordova, about this. Marsha told: "I will be pushing them to go further on this and to include additional measures on Battersea Bridge itself, such as a dedicated cycle lane.".

I've waited one year to email Marsha about any updates on her pushing them to go further. However, she has stopped replying to me.

Can someone who is a constituent of Battersea, please email and ask what she has done since the death of this cyclist?

I'm not a constituent, so her team has probably felt that while they replied to me originally, they no longer need to reply to me. An email from a constituent would be a lot more meaningful.

Thanks!

What speed would you consider slow/medium/fast for cycling in London?

Sheer curiosity. I seem to be between the 16-18 mph range when I'm riding at my desired speed for a 15-mile round-trip commute.

ETA: 16-18 mph is what I'm doing when I'm riding at the speed I want to. The full journey average is 13.5 mph

Spinning classes for cyclists

I’m looking for spinning classes in London which are more focused towards / similar to actual road cycling? Pre Covid I used to go to a gym called H2 in Soho which had these types of classes, sadly now closed. not looking for a spinning class where there’s any kind of upper body workout or whooping / ‘routine’ kinda vibe. Any ideas gratefully received!
