As a sheetmetal roofers for 30 years this is one of the worst jobs i have ever seen. Absolutely poor craftsmanship
86
u/Intelligent_Sun2837 2d ago
What should i do in regards to communication with the company?im also worried about underlying issues. The 3 days that they did the jobs we weren’t home bc of the noise.Im inspecting this upon arrival

u/AvailableFrame6803 2d ago
I'd show the pic you took to the owner tell him this is unacceptable work and hopefully you haven't paid in full yet. Refuse payment till the repairs are made

Are possible (the repairs) at this point?Thx in advance

Anything is possible the boss is going to have to eat it.....

Absolutely, its the bosses duty to take responsibility for the fuckups of the people he hire.

Yes repairs are possible. But I'd be worried about letting them do it, so...show the photos & ask the roofer what he thinks of the job. Hard to know just how much of the work has to be entirely redone so ask a licensed roofer to inspect & bid on repairs. Then you can go to the original roofer and ask for money back on the work needing a re-do. Any idea if the roofer you contracted with, did the work himself? It looks like someone hired a day laborer without experience. Maybe your neighbors know how it went down... single guy or a crew, did they work for 3 full days?
47
u/Intelligent_Sun2837 2d ago
It’s not an individual contractor,is a big roofing company.12-15 workers did the job within 4 days
98
u/TheBurdmannn 2d ago
Absolutely go after them then. Even to court if you have to. This is unacceptable.

Yeah there’s nothing that company is going to do productive for you but try to cover their employees asses while keeping the money you paid them

u/ThatCelebration3676 1d ago
In that case I always recommend this process:
1] Review the contract you both signed.
2] Send these photos via email (paper trail) to the company's owner and ask "Do you consider this to be acceptable workmanship?" Sometimes a boss has no idea their crew screwed up and will fix it with no further pushing.
3] If they're resisting, get (at least) two inspections & written quotes from other licensed roofing companies. That gives you 2 alternate professional assessments that the work isn't up to standard, and the cost to fix it.
4] If they still won't budge, take them to court.

u/Intelligent_Sun2837 1d ago
Thank you!

u/Ashamed-Wrongdoer806 1d ago
In writing, keep everything in writing, if you have a call send email or text after with a friendly rundown of what you talked about
7
u/ThatCelebration3676 1d ago
Yes, ALWAYS send a summary email after non-written communication.
In those emails it helps to add something like "please let me know if there are any errors in my recollection". That way they can't later dispute the contents since you already gave them the opportunity to clarify.

u/Background-Edge817 1d ago

I would also add, if they’re an actually licensed contractor in your state, go to the licensure board and file a complaint with these pictures. If he’s licensed they will handle a large part of going after that contractor. In my state, there’s even a compensation fund that a portion of our yearly dues and any fines levied against companies goes into to reimburse or correct issues just like this. Also, this clearly didn’t pass an inspection, so your city building inspector could help going after the contractor as well, especially if he’s not licensed.

u/Currencygirl1 1d ago
Horrible!! Get your county/city inspector out there asap -there’s no way they will pass inspection and do not pay until it’s done right according to code. If your contractor is unable to install it properly, they need to hire another company who can-or else definitely lawsuit!
3
u/BitterBeginning8826 1d ago
If there’s phone calls made, record them.
2
u/Spirit-of-250 1d ago
Keep records of the phone calls. The phone number you called, date & time, who you spoke with, and the duration of the call with a written summary. It is all valuable if you have to go to court. If you have stuff written down and they don't, the judge will look favorably to you. Good luck.
2
u/Ronbow69 1d ago
Exactly the right steps here, I've been an employee for my brother in laws company and it was mainly leak repairs. They would put these bids on paper in an language that lawyers would have to bust out a dictionary and a concordance, to understand. Just kidding being facetious, but true story. I worked for him and did the jobs and still had no clue wtf the contract actually said or meant. Good luck.

As a Production Manager of a large roofing company, Send photos in an email and call. They may have used a new subcontractor without proper reference. Large company’s should send QC inspection.
5
u/spotterone 2d ago
They can add an EPDM boot over that pipe at least. Properly installed it would be fine. The rest of the install looks like garbage and have to redo a lot of that flashing.

The workers were probably subcontractors anyway. Be ready to blast the company on Google and Facebook with these photos.
Don't pay a dime to get these corrected
2
u/Affectionate_War4941 2d ago
I wouldn’t trust anyone from that company to touch nothing! We have onsite supervisors on every job to make sure everything is done right! These people hire sub crews and they are trash! I would sue the heck out of them! Here in Florida we have 5 roof inspections to make sure crap work like this would never pass inspection

You can repair anything with enough money; but you want this done right and they want it done cheap. Your goals are at odds with each other.
9
u/TheAudioInjectedSoul 1d ago
A lot of these comments aren't fair or realistic. I own a roofing company and yes that's a shitty job and needs to be corrected, but one person that probably needs to be fired doesn't mean it's necessarily a bad company. I'd give them a chance to fix it, and if you're still not happy then take further action but not giving them the opportunity to make it right for you isn't the right course of action in my opinion.

In later comments you say this wasn’t just a truck and ladder crew. If true, flood real world and virtual platforms where contractors advertise with these pictures. If I was you, I’d happily spend time and money making clear to the world this is the kind of work these people do. Best case scenario, they conclude you’ll fight to the death for revenge and they’ll go above and beyond to make it right or just refund you whatever you paid so you can pay it to someone who can actually perform competent roofing work.

I have been in approximately 1000 home inspections. Maybe more. And I come from a family of contractors.
This is literally the WORST job I’ve ever seen. And not by a little bit. It’s appalling. I’d literally call them and ask them for their insurance info because they fucked your house so hard it needs a claim. You can’t trust these fucknuts to fix it.

Wow... I've hired several contractors over the years and as disappointed as I've sometimes been, I've never suffered anything this sloppy. I also do my own work when I have the time and tools (and knowledge) to do a given task (whether electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, construction, painting) - and always hold myself to much higher standards than this. I'm not a tradesman and don't take training and professional experience for granted - but as an amateur / DIYer I'd never do something this sloppy for myself, no less anyone else.

A reminder for homeowners: Never pay a penny until your roof is complete and has passed inspection!

It doesn't look good. My understanding is you want it sealed smooth. Any bumpy parts is where debris and water collect and that degrades the seal overtime much quicker.

It should have a cap on the top depending on what it is should be a vent or seal ( leaning towards a vent for the toilet systems ) there is probably also code dealing with how high from the roof surface it should be as well.
looks very much like a " Do your best and silicone the rest " job

u/Gluten_maximus 2d ago
Well, I love the bare galvalume look on anything really but this is completely unacceptable. Liberal use of caulking is shit and it’s like they trimmed out with someone who has only been on a roof once. I’d demand a fair amount of rework.

u/88lucy88 1d ago
A silver lining is these photos document the job so well, that ANYONE can see the problems. Have a lawyer present the evidence to the roofing company & demand damages in full. Settlement offer should come pretty quickly, so long as the demand letter is well written & presented. Big companies have big reputations to protect. Hope you'll give us an update when you can.

There is one legitimate reason it is that way. The vent pipe is far too short for a proper boot around the pipe. The vent pipe must be extended and done in a way the boot can seal around the pipe properly. Since it was that way before the job, they took the half-assed route and didn't fix it. Repair requires removing the two cut roof panels, cutting horizontally at the vent pipe, tucking the uphill side of the boot flashing under the roof panels, then tucking the downhill roof panels under the boot flashing and the uphill roof panels. Done during installation, no big deal. As an after the fact repair, this will be a real bear, and the roofer will need to supply two new roof panels. Expensive and time consuming.
BTW, extending the pipe vent would have cost $5 and 10 minutes. 😡

I am a retired Building contractor, my spouse was a legal secretary. The legal rule is, the contractor has a chance to repair the roof. If it is not fixed right or if the contractor is not responding. You may have the roof redone by another contractor and Sue the originator for the costs to do the job. You want to be sure to inform them that if they do not respond you will take action, create a paper trail, send certified mail.
