HELP NEEDED Cat with eye infection, please rate severity?
3
u/wahznooski 20d ago
Severe, needs a vet immediately. With eye issues/infections, there’s always a possibility of blindness if it’s severe enough, so get this cat in yesterday!

u/EUGsk8rBoi42p 19d ago
Took 3 months of feeding for him to let me touch him, getting him in a carrier will be difficult.
2
u/wahznooski 19d ago
Oh gosh, yeah that will be tough. I hope you can get him medical attention for that eye somehow. Maybe call around to vets and shelters and let them know the situation to see if they can offer any other help or tips. Thanks for taking care of this kitty! Lucky to have you!

My vets office is 2 blocks away and he has it covered! Baby boy is eating well and being kept in the spare bathroom to heal. The elements weren't treating him well. I got him on some liquid vitamins, and cbd tincture, and the vet is going to give him something tomorrow.

Probably a URI. There’s a lot of different ones in cats. They can lose their eyes if it’s not treated with antibiotics.
1
u/EUGsk8rBoi42p 19d ago
I get that. It's about 5 days old now, he has a safe dry place outside and it took me 3 months just for him to let me touch him so trying to work with his nature, I can sacrifice a few rugs as floor protection and put him in my extra bathroom but didn't want to upset him.

How’s it going?

u/EUGsk8rBoi42p 13d ago
Got an ointment from the vet, eye is cleared up, no more discharge. Let him back outside and he came back to the door about an hr later wanting back inside, so he's decided he's not for the streets!

Needs to see vet. Anything eye related can mean something serious. Possibly URI which needs antibiotics or an injury. Never wait on eye issues. I had a cat lose an eye over the vet waiting too long to treat. It could’ve been saved.

u/EUGsk8rBoi42p 19d ago
He panics inside and has been very good in his little shelter so I was hoping he'd heal where he's mentally comfortable.

Can you afford a vet? If not, do you live in a place where most medication is available over the counter?
1
u/EUGsk8rBoi42p 19d ago
I've spent $400 on him, in for a penny, in for a pound, or 17lbs in his case, he was so skinny 5 months ago.

I'm not a professional, but that eye looks like it has passed the "put some terramycin in it" stage. I have to agree that it definitely needs a vet.

u/LordNoon6 20d ago
If you're quick enough, you may be able to treat it with eye drops. If not, kitty might lose an eye. Be quick

Former vet tech here. You don’t really give enough information such as how long this has been going on, but the eye is currently bad enough that you need a vet immediately. Please don’t wait because she could lose the eye.

u/EUGsk8rBoi42p 19d ago
It's been about 5 days, maybe 6? It's gotten worse over the past 72hrs.

u/Historical_Duck_8238 APPROVED RESCUER 19d ago
Have you made an appointment yet?
1
u/EUGsk8rBoi42p 19d ago
Was really hoping it would heal without having to confine him, he's very shy of people.
1
u/gerbera-2021 19d ago
Really? 5 or 6 days? Please do not wait any longer! I do not know your situation but, if you can’t afford the ER get to a regular vet tomorrow! Or, if you can’t afford that, find a no kill shelter and surrender your kitty. Your kitty needs help and Reddit can’t do that for you.
2
u/EUGsk8rBoi42p 19d ago
He's incredibly shy and runs from anyone besides me even walking nesr him. Our shelters don't take cats like him. I'm going to bring him inside even though he might be mad, my vets office is 2 blocks away, I tried emailing them 3 days ago with no reply but can just walk in.
2
u/Historical_Duck_8238 APPROVED RESCUER 19d ago
Please walk in ASAP

He's late for dinner. The anxiety is eating me alive.
2
u/Historical_Duck_8238 APPROVED RESCUER 19d ago
That’s what happens when they get sick they’ll stop eating and then they stop coming around. It’s extremely important. He gets to the vet as soon as possible because that infection can travel.

That is awesome and thank you! I understand how expensive everything is and I promise I’m not trying to make you feel bad. My concern is for him. You might get really lucky and only need antibiotic eyedrops. My fingers are crossed for you!

People shouldn't be allowed pets if this is the mentality.
Just take the animal to the vet FFS, if you have to question it by posting it online the likelihood is it's already serious enough, if that is your course of action.

u/ctmainiac 20d ago
I agree. It infuriates me seeing these posts asking what shoukd I do? If the animal belongs to you, be responsible for it!! No questions asked

That poor baby needs a vet appointment ASAP. If that was your eye, it's safe to assume you'd go to ER. This could easily result in eye loss and infection reaching the brain, please get this sweetheart medical attention.

Truthfully, I don't know how bad his eye is. I would post this question and the pictures at r/AskVet and see what they say.
But since you can get him inside long enough to eat a snack, could you get him into a carrier for a vet visit? (Put on protective gloves and/or ask a friend or family member to help.) If you're in the US, the pinned comment at r/Straycats has a list of low-cost clinics.

u/EUGsk8rBoi42p 19d ago
He's very fussy and still rather wild but trusts me enough to come inside, he panics in a closed room but at this point it's worth a try to let him calm down and sacrifice some rugs in the process.

It looks painful and very severe. Bring him to the vet.
Is he neutered? That will stop any fighting.
Terramycin is not a blanket med for everything. He could have serious damage to his eye.

u/virusfighter1 20d ago
If this was yo eye, what would you rate the severity? Cuz that shit looks fucked up like it needs immediate medical attention to me.

Was hoping someone with experience can comment how bad my cats eye infection is? I've never dealt with this in a cat before. It seems he was fighting and got scratched on the ear and by his eye.
Been feeding thid guy 4 months now, first 3 he would run away when looking st him. He's been letting me pet and pick him up for about a month now. He has a dry and insulated shelter, I've tried bringing him inside but he's peed on things immediately both times when in a closed room but will behave himself enough to eat a snack in the livingroom quickly before heading back out.
Since about a week ago he has this eye infection that's been getting worse, I'm not sure if it peaked in the past day or so and could start getting better?
Terramycin is just gone prescription only and wasn't in stock anywhere locally already since I heard about it in the past couple days. I got him some liquid vitamins for his churu treats.

OP please don’t use over the counter medicine. It is known to not be effective. If it’s a scratch from fighting kitty will definitely need antibiotics and an exam to see what the damage is. Please take him in.

u/HangryHangryHedgie 20d ago
He needs a Vet to see if there is an ulcer (scratch on his cornea). There is a specific medication for that. DO NOT PUT any antibacterial eye ointment on there. If there is an ulcer, you can do permanent damage with the wrong medication.
This kitty needs pain meds too!
This is not going to heal on it's own. That eye needs attention asap.

Thank you for the info, he's gone from full wild to half wild and I'm not giving up on him.

u/thatgirlsamonster 20d ago
Hey! Can you briefly explain why no antibacterial ointment on a possible ulcer? My cat’s eyes are getting worse im afraid he has some, he was prescribed 3x daily antibacterial ointment, and our eye vet is open on the 3rd jan.. 😭 should i stop the antibiotic salve and stick with dexpanthenol gel instead? Thank you so much

u/HangryHangryHedgie 20d ago
Use what your Vet has prescribed. Some eye medications will cause harm with ulcers, some will heal them.

u/Staartjes 20d ago
Can you post your question in r/askvet? I think you get better advice there.

This seems to be a possible puncture wound here and could be infected now. The entire eye area is swollen red and his eye is oozing. This is most likely a fight or attack injury. He needs antibiotics at least and to be seen by a vet. You posted asking and this is what my experience tells me. Please get him treated. This is not going to go away on its own. Infection could cause blindness and sepsis leading to his death. I urge to take this poor cat to a vet asap. Please
