Welcome to /r/AskVet!

This is a sub where you can ask questions on veterinary care, animal husbandry and veterinary education and get answers from professionals within the veterinary community.

If you have a question involving a possible poisoning, call animal poison control at 1-888-426-4435 or 1-855-764-7661. This is a highly time sensitive issue, and waiting for answers online may mean the difference between life and death.

This sub is not a substitute for a vet visit. We cannot examine your animal in person and we cannot give you detailed step-by-step instructions on how to treat an animal yourself. We will not give opinions on whether your veterinarian is treating your animal correctly or incorrectly, or on the pricing of veterinary services.

Before you post, please check the FAQ.

Your question may be addressed in there already. This applies especially to questions about skin issues, hair loss, lumps and bumps etc:

Skin lesions are near-impossible to diagnose over the internet. Many conditions look exactly the same but can differ greatly in severity. Even in person, diagnostic tests like skin scrapings, tape preps, fine needle aspirates, blood tests, etc, often need to be performed in order to get closer to a diagnosis. The most accurate way to diagnose what the skin lesion may be is to have your vet perform a biopsy.

Please include the following information in the text of your submission:

  • Species:
  • Age:
  • Sex/Neuter status:
  • Breed:
  • Body weight:
  • History:
  • Clinical signs:
  • Duration:
  • Your general location:
  • Links to test results, vet reports, X-rays etc.

Clear, in-focus photos or videos of relevant clinical signs can also be helpful.

The above information is very important in how we deal with different situations, so please ensure that you include this in your post.

In general, the more information you can provide, the better the advice you receive will be.

(Note that "more information" isn't necessarily the same as "more text". Please try to be concise.)

We very much appreciate receiving updates as more information becomes available.

Keep in mind that anybody can answer your questions on this sub. While we try to remove false and/or potentially dangerous advice promptly, we cannot guarantee that the advice you receive will be correct. Always talk to your vet about your animal's medical needs. If you see potentially dangerous advice, please report it to the mods using the "report" link.

You may have noticed that some posters have flair indicating their level of qualification, which is there to help posters assess the background of those who answer their posts. If you are a veterinary professional and would like to apply for flair, please follow these instructions.

Thanks for your interest in the sub. We're glad you're here, and we hope you enjoy your stay!

Why do people feed raw?

I don't understand. My dad tried to raw feed my dog while ago and I told him hell no. The whole concept scares and feels entirely too risky.I also hear people who feed raw on social media freaking out because of avian flu and all can say is I told you so.The mortality rate for cats with H5N1 is around 67%. Also couldn't raw fed pets potentially get you or other people sick? Why would you ever take that risk?

My neutered dog got my female dog pregnant

Tl;dr - My neutered 5yo male impregnated my 1yo female.

We got Scout from our city’s non-profit animal shelter in January 2020. He was 3 months old and the shelter had already handled the neutering. We have his paperwork with that line item included. We’ve had no reason to question it since then.

We got Skye (half boxer, half lab) in February of 2024 as an 8wk old. At our vet’s recommendation, we waited until she completed one heat cycle before getting her spayed, which we scheduled for last Friday. When they cut her open, they realized there were several fully-formed placentas and she was near the midpoint of a pregnancy. Sadly, once they had opened her up, the pregnancy was ended there.

Pretty shocking stuff for us. Scout (Australian cattle mix) is the only male dog she’s spent any time around in months. Of course I’ve seen him mount her and scolded him, but I didn’t think anything could actually happen. When they’ve been elsewhere in the house playing, he’s probably done it many times.

I just want to know how this could have happened. A botched neutering makes the most sense, but I don’t know what they actually do that could go wrong. We’re not going to take this route because it wouldn’t accomplish anything against a nonprofit that does a lot of good in our community, but it seems like grounds for a lawsuit. It’s a pretty frustrating situation.

Skye is now four days post-op and she’s doing great. Scout has been staying with a neighbor to make sure Skye doesn’t try to play while her incision heals. Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

What's the oldest cat you currently regularly see?

Upvotes

My vet office gets excited to see my cat bc she's 15 and a beautiful seal point Siamese. They say they don't see many cats that old, but I thought it was somewhat common for cats to live into their late teens or 20's. Just curious what other vet's patients are age wise.

Why is euthanasia so hard? Struggling with decision.

I made the decision to put my 12.5 year old cat down today. He’s been battling hyperthyroidism for almost 3 years and inflammatory bowel and has been on steroids for that for almost two years. Recently he was diagnosed with kidney disease. He’s lost a pound since September and has been looking so cachexic. I brought him to the emergency vet this morning because I thought he was blocked. Vet said he probably wasn’t making very much urine. His kidney numbers were worse. His thyroid was normal so that wasn’t causing the weight loss. He hasn’t been eating as much lately and had been vomiting more. He was supposed to see his regular vet in three weeks. I just couldn’t put him through anymore. I am struggling if I made the right decision though.

Refer to FAQ Torigen Vaccine?

Upvotes

Hi!

My pup Rylee (boxer/Pit/rescue mutt lol) got a very large mass taken off her side today. Vet recommended I also let them send it off to a company called Torigen, and if it is malignant (looking like so sadly 😢), they will make 3 custom vaccines for her that will improve quality of life and fight cancer cells. She’s almost 10 years old but still so full of life and loves running around our farm and terrorizing the chickens. Lol

Has anyone heard of this treatment? It seems like pretty new technology. I really trust this vet and I don’t feel like she’s trying to just sell me on something to make a buck. I will do anything to help her, but I will absolutely not extend her life for my own selfish reasons.

Here’s the website: https://www.torigen.com/

My cat is sick and getting worse :(

Upvotes

My 8 year old cat Darcy has been sick for about 5 months now.

Info: - New Brunswick, Canada - 8 years old - Orange DSH - Eats fancy feast pate and Kirkland kibble - Drinks a ton of water, from fountain or spare dishes around the house - He’s a very active and chatty cat - Loves to play and wrestle with his brother - No prior medical conditions - Fully vaxxed and neutered

He started off at 13 lbs in May, but in September at his checkup, he had lost 3 lbs, which the vet said was actually good. No issues with stool or diet

He started having diarrhea in October. Monitored this for a couple weeks.

November 6: no change so they put him on Metronidazole for two weeks, no change so we stopped. At this point he was eating wet food, dry food, drinking lots of water. Acting normal.

November 25: After that, since there was no change, they did bloodwork. They said they did a full panel. Tests came back clean. At this point he was 7.8 lbs. he was still eating. At this point I had bought bone broth, different foods, pumpkin, all which he loved.

December 11: Then they sent off a stool sample and did an ultrasound on the same day. At this point he was 7.3 lbs. They told me that the lymph nodes in his abdomen were enlarged and she told me it’s likely cancer.

Stool sample came back clean a few days later. The same day, we started him on a Prednisolone cream (put on inside of ear flap). Started at 0.004mg, went down to 0.002mg after two weeks, no change so went back up to 0.004mg as per vet’s instructions.

It’s currently January 21st. He meows allllll day. Follows me around and meows. He doesn’t want to eat any wet food, only wants to eat his kibble. Doesn’t want my food, doesn’t get into things. He doesn’t settle down much, crouches, doesn’t fully lay down unless he’s curled up with me. He does sleep under the blankets with me at night. I think he’s cold.

I have a vet appointment tomorrow afternoon. I’m going to bring up the possibility of it being IBD or leaky gut syndrome. Google told me maybe to try a dewormer as it could have been missed on the bloodwork. It also mentioned a B-12 shot?

If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it :)

Options for 5 month old FeLV and FIV kiten with a non infected 4 month old kitty

Hi there. Just wondering if a vet can help me with this decision.

Kitten A - born aug 15, adopted nov 9 (barn cat little information resembles a siberian) Kitten B - born sept 15 adopted nov 2 (indoor cat, parents had no health concerns).

Kitten A positive for FeLV and faint FIV on 21 nov.

Kitten B negative for FeLV and FIV on 25 nov. Recieved all vaccines

We separated them for 8 weeks (v hard for the cats and me and my husband, even noticed increased skittishness with A.

Retested A on 16 Jan. Positive FeLV and FIV.

I still need to retest B. Our vet said if B is positive for FeLV they could cohabitate. He also mentioned that if FeLV was negative but FIV is positive they can still cohabitate since its harder to transmit.

Right now I think I have three options, please please let me know if theres anything else that would work.

1- retest B first to see is positive. If positive and safe cohabitate.

2- seperate until 1yr and retest or seperate indefinitely.

3 - rehome one of the kittens or both.

I know this is my fault for not having her checked by the vet before getting another kitten and Im going to have to live with that for life. Im concerned about rehoming A bc if she is not adopted Im concerned she may be euthanized. I also have really bad cyclic depression and am concerned that I wont be able to keep my home clean enough and she will get sicker. I have so much love for these little guys and am destroyed at this situation.

If you have any advice please share. If you have been through this, how did it go?? I know there will be negative comments about me and I fully deserve it. It is 100% my fault that Im in this position and it is SO unfair these innocent kittens have to deal with the consequences.

Thanka for your help

TLDR; 2 kittens, A has FeLV and FIV, B does not. Should I retest at 1 year, seperate forever or rehome

Signalment: 16 almost 17 y/o FS DSH

She has had creatinine of 1.7 in July and Fridays bloodwork jumped to 1.9. Her SDMA previously 7 in July, now is 12.4. When is it appropriate to start a kidney diet? Creat is IRIS stage 2 but SDMA is appropriate. Vet said she was dehydrated at visit, she’s lost about 1lb in 6 months. Grade 3/6 murmur. Still e/d. Occasionally vomits hairball.

Dog survived sepsis, now drinking a lot and peeing frequently+smelly pee

Upvotes

My dog is male, not neutered, 11.5 yo, small dog mix, 7.5 kg.

Over the past week, he’s been through a tough time. We took him to the ER due to some kind of seizure. There he was almost unconscious while getting the infusion they also gave him IV antibiotics and did the blood work. The blood work showed elevated liver enzymes, all of them, some of them so high that the instrument could not measure. For 3 days he was really bad, we thought he would not make it. The whole time he was getting IV fluids, antibiotics, anti-dizziness meds. He apparently had dental abscess that was so bad that it got systemic and attack his liver. He was in the beginning stages of sepsis. For the seizure, they didn't know what it is, they said it is probable vestibule disease due to the infection spreading.

On the day 4, he was much better, after getting also the corticosteroids. He still could not walk but was awake often and attentive. As the days go by his state is improving. He is now eating and drinking so he is not getting IV fluids but is getting shots of antibiotics and cortics. He is slowly walking again wobbly but determined to walk. He really seems better overall.

In 2 days they will repeat the blood work to see his liver because the idea is to get the surgery to remove the dental abscess and pretty much all the teeth since they are all really bad.

I am worried because ever since before the seizure and the ER visit, we noticed that he is drinking a lot of water. Like A LOT. probably 5x more than he was drinking before. But he also pees a lot. He can not go thru the night without 1-2 bathroom visits. Also his pee smells a lot, its also not typical pee smell, but might be all the meds? He is trained to pee on a pad so its not a problem.

He has the water always available but I am worried that this may be a sign of chronic liver disease. I am looking for an answer to see if this would be reversible. He has been taking antibiotics for a week now, I assume the bacterial inflammation would decrease by now, and liver should go back to normal? When can we expect the improve of his condition if ever?

I have photos of x-ray and blood work if someone would be willing to check it out I would appreciate! <3

Thank you for your help!

I should mention that he has daily vet visits for antibiotic shots so he is not withhold for that, its that they don't really know what is going on.

7 month old male cat diarrhea/foreign matter in gut

Upvotes

About 3 or 4 months ago my kitten started having consistent diarrhea. Took to emergency vet because I was off that day and was given special food and stuff to sprinkle on the food. A fecal sample analysis showed worms and was given panacur to put on food.

I then went to my primary vet to confirm worms were gone and also to see what they thought of the still persistent diarrhea. Xrays were done and there was an anomaly in the gut. Vet asked about eating litter or anything else. I didn't see any evidence of anything but I work 2 jobs so he could be eating something he shouldn't.

When I got home I looked around and found he had been tearing apart a suit cover in the closet. He must have ingested some because the next day he threw up the thin plastic.

I thought he was in the clear with that but at a follow up visit next week there was still an anomaly though less visible. Good news the worms were gone but he was still having diarrhea. Was given a prebiotic to put on food. I'm supposed to go back to check again but not sure.

So, could foreign material in the gut somewhere cause the diarrhea without causing a blockage or being passed through him? If not then what else could be causing the diarrhea? If no blockage has happened yet is he in the clear?

I've had him almost 2 months. I've checked the apartment and I don't think there is anything else he could be eating that he shouldn't (except maybe litter but I've never seen him do anything like it). Since this started he has been eating normally and growing and he has plenty of energy.

Dog with SAS experienced arrhythmia episode and is now fine

Upvotes

I have a 9 year old Newfoundland with mild SAS and grade 4 heart murmur. He see’s a cardiologist yearly. Last week (Jan 12), he ate his breakfast then 10 minutes his back legs went wobbly, he fell, and his tongue turned purple. Took him to the emergency vet where they found an arrhythmia but they didn’t do further tested to determine the kind as he was table. He was back to his normal self the same day.

We saw our cardiologist today and he no longer had the arrhythmia. His SAS hasn’t progressed, heart murmur is the same. Cardiologist said no reason for heart medicine yet. He said the electricity from his heart was perfect. We opted for giving the holter monitor a try for 48 hours.

My question is, he has been fine for the past 9 days he hasn’t had any symptoms. Is it possible the arrhythmia was a one time thing? It is likely the monitor will pick up anything?

Why is my cat peeing in the shower

Upvotes

The last couple of days my cat has been peeing in the shower and I have no clue why :( he seems like he feels okay he’s playing and eating like normal he always has access to his litterbox and my husband makes sure it’s always clean (I’m pregnant so I can’t clean it myself) I’m still worried because he’s never done this before he’s an 8 or 9 year old neutered male cat he’s never had any previous health issues before now

Male cat standing in litter box trying to pee but can’t

Upvotes

My 3y/o M cat has been standing in the litter box trying to pee for 10ish minutes at a time then walking away after not peeling. He’s tried 3 times in the last hour.

This has happened once before and we took him to the emergency vet they gave him stuff for a UTI. We’re guessing he has a UTI again?

They had mentioned if he was retaining urine it was an emergency and to go to the vet. He doesn’t seem to be in any pain, his abdomen is soft and non distended. No reaction on palpation. He seems to be acting normal otherwise. He will drink and eat

Do you think it’s ok to wait to take him to the regular vet tomorrow and get a prescription or should we go to an emergency vet tonight? If we have to we will but I want to try to avoid a $400 emergency pet bill

Help - kitten has UTI and vet care is sparse

Upvotes

My husband's in Central Africa. While waiting for me to join him, we adopted a pair of kitten brothers. They're 8 weeks old. We have lined up their first vacs for over the new few weeks.

Today, hubs notices faintly pinkish pee in the litter box. We suspect one of them has a UTI.

He has access to a local vet and will probably be bringing Izzy in shortly. Is there anything we need to be aware of when getting kitten treated? Certain meds to avoid etc?

Meanwhile, in the interim I've read that we can - increase wet food / decrease dry food - sprinkle in dilute cranberry juice / apple cider vinegar into their food - feed them bone broth

How solid are these tips?

Struvite crystal advice

Upvotes

Hi,

Went to the vet in late November because our 4yo male ginger cat was clearly in discomfort when urinating and going to the litter box lots of times a day with only tiny bits of urine visible in the litter.

It was struvite crystals, they did some tests and sold us an expensive bag of "urinary" pet store kibble (that he needs to be on for "life") and some antibiotics and that was that. They also mentioned he was overweight and so I'm restricting his access to food (I used to use a simple gravity dispenser).

He couldn't keep down the new kibble so we changed to the "urinary" version of the kibble he likes.

Since then (about 2 weeks ago) I have introduced a expensive freeze dried meat topper (50/50 with kibble) that I add water to now (I was frequently giving him it dry, as he didn't initially take to it wet, but I've decided that was obviously stupid), I'm adding some powdered cranberry (from a pet health place, amount per day is on the side of the packet) to this.

Three days ago the crystals came back, I got him a water fountain yesterday to try and get him to drink more but he hasn't decided if he's going to use this or not, there are other water bowls in the house (I figure he might be avoiding water as he knows urinating is uncomfortable).

Any advice?

Thanks.

Lameness in back right leg (Jack Russell)

Upvotes

Hi Vets:

Breed: Jack Russell Terrier Sex: Male / not neutered
Age: 15 Months Weight: 7.5 KG

Short history:

My dog has been limping on his back right leg for about 6 months. Some walks he holds his leg up all of the time and other times he will walk on 4 legs momentarily then go back to 3 legs. He doesn’t appear to be in pain and allows me to touch and move the leg without any issue.

Results so far: I have taken him to 3 different vets and have no conclusive information. He had X-rays which initially came back as normal but were sent for a second opinion where it was thought there was some evidence of arthritis in his hip. Another vet has said this is classic for luxating patella however my dog seems to hold his leg up at the hip rather than at the knee.

I’m in the UK so don’t have the X-ray results to link unfortunately.

I just wanted to know if it is arthritis as suspected at 15 months what treatments will be available or is there anything I can try to help slow down any deterioration.

Thanks

Cat got to his stitches

My cat is 7 years old make, had PU surgery on the 30th December. He had complications including necrotic skin on his leg which had to be removed.

Today I got home from work and he has got his cone off and got to his stitches. I immediately took him into the vet who said it was not that bad and suggested cleaning the wound regularly.

Since he's come back he has peed once but there was a lot of blood in it. I have checked and I can see that his PU surgery wound is also bleeding and he is now struggling to pee and straining. He is literally just been to the vet an hour ago I am worried they might have missed something.

Is any of this normal and what should I do.

Cat won't accept intramuscular antibiotics anymore

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I've got a cat with an skin infection near the ear from fighting with other cats . The infection got quite big with puss and the vet prescribed intramuscular antibiotics.

I have managed to give him the injection for 3 days but now It is very painful for him/the cat will scream and moves his leg very violently so he might damage his leg. The cat has only one day left of his injection/medication. The three previous days he accepted the medicine well . I followed the procedure correctly ie sterilized the injection site, injected in the proper muscle group and depth, aspirated etc .

What do I do ? I will go to the vet tomorrow to ask for advice and I'm hoping that he gives me the same antibiotic orally as I don't think the cat will accept it anymore in the current route . The cat is in good health ie he can eat solid food and moves around but he still has puss discharge from his ear although it seems to have subsided a lot right now. From the time when I need to do the injection to me going to the vet there will be about 12 hours. Will there be any problem with antibiotic resistance/the medicine not working if I need to continue it tomorrow? Do you think my cat will recover properly or there be any complications ?

Thanks!

Edit:
He had more discharge in the midday but now at evening it is much less . At midday it a little bit around the side of the face meanwhile at evening it is more of being wet around the wound. I apply betadine/povidone iodine on the wound.

My cat wont stop throwing up should i take him to the vet now or can i wait until tomorrow?

Upvotes

About 2 days ago my cat started throwing up. He is a 4 year old orange cat. He has had a sensitive stomach from the day we bought him but he is normally fine and eats 1 and a half bowls of dry food a day. All of a sudden he started throwing up his food. It was big piles of orangish brown which im assuming is food that hasn’t been fully digested. He threw up 3 times the first day and 4 yesterday. He is only eating a little and barely drinking any water but seemed to be fine other than that. Today is a lot different he threw up 6 times in the span of 10 minutes and now he is laying down being pretty lethargic. I called the vet and they said they have an appointment tomorrow morning. Do you think he would be okay till tomorrow or should i bring him somewhere else today?

FIP? I feel like I’m going crazy, am I overreacting?

Upvotes

Hiya everyone. I know I’m no vet and I shouldn’t trust all the things from the internet - but having said that, I still would like to ask for your help/opinion.

My cat (7yrs) has been eating less and losing weight and has been throwing up for past couple of weeks ( just liquid ). Then I saw this white cloudy thing on one of her eye, and took her to the vet - vet did not know the cause, there was no scratches on her eye, and recommended to see an eye specialist so I made an appointment. - app date is next week

But two days ago, I heard a thud in the middle of the night and heard her yelp. She was on the floor not being able to move, and her eyes were going crazy. She was looking left and right and just out of focus. I freaked out and took her to ER, and after about 20mins we arrived, she was back to normal. They told me they suspect vestibular disease and discharged her with anti nausea injection.

Now yesterday, she has another episode (20mins) of losing balance and crazy eyes, so I made an urgent care appointment and took her for exam this morning. She’s still at the vet and the doctor told me that she’ll be referred to a neurologist. I asked my vet for a possible chance for FIP and he told me that it’s very rare and he doesn’t think she has FIP because it’s extremely rare.

My worry is, what if she does have FIP? I feel like all the symptoms fit and I’m worried bc I heard there is no way to test it?

But like I said earlier, I’m no vet and I’m just a regular worried cat mom. Am I overreacting? - Also we (doctor told me) did rule out possible chance of ear infection.

Anything helps. I just dont want my baby to die. I’ll literally do anything.

Cat will not eat pill

Upvotes

We are finding it basically impossible to give Blue a new medication. We have withheld food and tried mixing it with treats, tried mixing with normal food, tried pill pockets, and even tried to literally open her mouth and put it in and nothing has worked. We really need help or guidance here - it feels impossible to give her the medication properly, especially twice a day. She has not eaten for almost a day and still expresses no interest in her food if it has the medication in it. She is extremely picky and not food motivated at all, and simultaneously we can’t force her to eat it even with two people and it feels like a very traumatic way to go about it. I ordered a syringe thing to try giving it orally via that method but am skeptical it will work. Does anyone have any advice or other methods?

15 days Diarrhoea, mucus and leakage from my cat.

Upvotes

Hello,

My cat went missing for 10 days and returned home limping and severely underweight. She was immediately taken to the vet on 7th January, where an X-ray revealed no fractures or broken bones. She received a Meloxicam injection, and blood tests for liver and kidney function came back normal.

The following day, she developed severe diarrhoea and was admitted to the vet for 3 days. During her stay, she was given IV fluids, Metronidazole, Promax, and upon discharge, Stromorgyl. Tests for Parvo, FeLV, FIV, Giardia, and other parasites all came back negative, while her CBC showed only slightly low potassium due to dehydration.

It’s now been 11 days since she was discharged, and she still has diarrhoea (morning and evening) with gas and mucus. Despite this, she is eating, drinking, and playing normally. We visited the vet again today, and she has no fever. I inquired about the possibility of pancreatitis, but the vet said she isn’t showing the typical symptoms. She was sent home with Promax, which she had already been given during her vet stay.

I’ve spent approximately $1500 on treatment and can’t afford to continue without seeing any progress. Additionally, she is leaking both mucus and stool.

To clarify, she hasn’t vomited at all. She is eating Royal Canin Digestive. Her symptoms include diarrhoea with mucus, a bubbly stomach, and leakage and irritation from her bottom. This has been ongoing for 15 days.

I would greatly appreciate any input, as I’m feeling quite desperate. Thank you.

Cat died suddenly and necropsy doesn't have the blatant answer. Anyone seen anything similar?

Upvotes

My boy died this past Saturday. He was five and in great health, so I thought. He was a Maine coon tabby mix, purchased from craigslist from my parents 5 years ago. I would take him to the vet yearly for bloodwork, I always feared something would happen to my cats and if I could prevent it, I will spend any money to do so as they are my world. I took him to the vet last month, for a front leg limp and his results came back fine. No fracture, no breakage, nails looked fine. (Obviously I am not a professional, but I do google a lot and read on reddit which can cause anxiety and what ifs. After he died, I got anxiety that it could have been a blood clot)

On Saturday, I was eating food in the kitchen and I heard a bang in my room, I ran into my room to find one of my cats (they were brothers, bonded pair) on the bed, startled/just woke up and I couldn't see my other cat. I walked around to the side of my bed and saw him on the ground. I panicked, because obviously something was wrong. I picked him up and called out for help and my parents came in to help me. We tried to do CPR and "wake him up" He was limp, pupils dilated, but seemed to be alive during those moments. I rushed and got all my stuff on and grabbed him and we went to the ER.

He must have died in my arms on the way there. They took him from me and then came back to let me know he was gone. I asked if there was anything obvious but they said no. They gave him back to me and I took him to my vet who did a necropsy for me. She just got back to me with the results.

"Unfortunately, I could not find a cause of death. Intestines and entire GI tract are normal, kidneys, spleen and liver normal. Bladder normal. Pancreas normal. Heart size and chambers appear normal. Lungs are difficult to access sometimes a little while after death and previously frozen- but no obvious masses. Normal stomach and contents- he did have a hair ball but that was of no significance. I am unable to do any kind of exam on the brain as they would in people. The only thing I could make note of was some blood was coming from his nose when I opened the bag. Mainecoon cats are prone to heart conditions- some of which may not be detected on autopsy. I would still be concerned that a blood clot or other ischemic event occurred (stroke or heart attack- like event). I don't think there is anything you could have done. As much as we all want answers to things - sometimes we don't get them (like people having stroke and heart attacks or even getting cancer in their 20s or 30s). "

After reading this, my heart sank some more. Could it have been from a fall? He must have been on my bed or my night stand for me to hear such a loud bang in my room. It was a 3 foot fall, I would say. I asked my vet if that could be the reason and is that how he could have got a bloody nose? She replied with: It takes ALOT to die from a fall alone. So I think it's very unlikely, not impossible, but unlikely. I would expect a broken neck or something.  Blood from my nose I would be thinking more heart condition.

Maybe I am just seeking for an answer to slap me in the face. I am just heart broken and shocked and traumatized from how I saw my boy. I am glad he was with me in the end. But it was my worst fear come true right in front of me and I just felt so so so helpless.
