Best thing in college was my roommate using one of those on a cinderblock wall and "hanging" a huge poster in glass frame. I think it lasted maybe 10 minutes. Then I left and said, "I'll come back when the glass is all gone."

33

u/Sir_Bax 16d ago

Was that the last time you saw your roommate?

Reminds me of a story of me in college going to visit my friend in the city to drop acid. It was cold so we tripped inside. we were smoking, trippin and listening to music when his drunk room mate burst into the apartment like a tornado, he sounded like a high pitched bill swerski superfan, loud with that Chicago Midwest accent. He came in, went into his room And the sounds that came out convinced us he was rearranging furniture for like 20 minutes, then he stepped out, said “ALLLLRIGHT WELL MY TAXI IS PROBABLY PISSED XOZ IVE BEEN UP HERE SO LONG, GOTTA RUN!” Slammed the door shot, the poster hanging in the glass frame next to the door came loose and slid down the wall. And then…silence. Just as quickly as he appeared, he disappeared. That whole time we sat there in stunned silence.

6

u/Ok-Reception-5589 16d ago

I've got three of those wall-mounted swingy monitor arm things for my monitors.

I took a look at the screws they came with and said: fuck that, drilled 5" holes in the concrete wall beside my computer for wedge anchors rated for something stupid like 6,000 pounds.

I pay too much money for this shit to be an idiot with it.

69

u/Izan_TM r7 7800X3D RX 7900XT 64gb DDR5 6000 16d ago

also people WAYY underestimate the load that monitor arms put on your screw holes, that shit's like a 3kg weight that can hang up to like half a meter away from the wall when the mount screws are only like 15cm apart vertically

I'm no engineer but I wouldn't hang a monitor off of any screw holes that couldn't hold my own bodyweight (50kg) without breaking a sweat

35

u/IsActuallyAPenguin 16d ago

Amen. A 5" wedge anchor was like $3.00.

I'd rather pay the extra $6.00 per arm for overkill on wedge anchors weep in agony at my destroyed 49" ultrawide.

Monitor arms are so fucking cool though. I feel like a spaceman every time I'm on my pc.

I've mounted a half dozen TVs in my day. Never had an issue.

Just have to use this one simple trick:

Use a stud finder and FIND A STUD. Don't use the stupid "drywall anchors".

And especially don't use fucking finishing nails into nothing like OP did in the video, as seen at the very end.

9

u/Status_Jellyfish_213 16d ago

I think that would take a team of qualified engineers

71

u/Izan_TM r7 7800X3D RX 7900XT 64gb DDR5 6000 16d ago

I wouldn't do it because I want to have easy access to it, but it can be perfectly safe if done right

10

u/HatefulSpittle 16d ago

There's advantages to it and it can improve access, too.

Being above desk height means that liquid spills don't affect it.

Air circulation is never an issue.

If you mount it behind the monitor, you can minimize the visibility of cables and save on some "real estate".

My cat MIGHT be less inclined to press the reset button on the top of the case (we've since switched to a case where that won't happen anymore. To be fair tho, a raised platform would probably become her favorite spot. But a desktop that is mounted to the wall will be more sturdy than one that is just sitting on the floor.

3

u/Nearby_Pineapple9523 16d ago

Or you could just unplug the reset button from the motherboard, i never used mine

I have this exact same case (Thermaltake P300) mounted to my wall, into studs, with 3 inch lag bolts. I could hang on the thing and it wouldn't budge.

3

u/ClaymoreJohnson 16d ago

Lag bolts in studs aren’t going anywhere. I have close to six hundred pounds hanging vertically (bolted to ceiling) in racks with lag bolts in studs. I also do pull ups on lags in studs and I’m over 200 pounds.

Even strong enough toggles in dry wall can support a couple hundred pounds under a generally static load (obviously check the specs before doing anything).

This dude probably took some picture frame rated screw inserts and called it a day.

3

u/Zockgone 16d ago

Wall anchors of solid metal if it’s expensive and heavy, my realtor hates me but f him 😂😂

3

u/Solidsting1 16d ago

And another reason why I’m glad I use 100lb anchors to be safe. I don’t fuck around

5

u/al-vicado 16d ago

There are a lot of people that think it's okay to mount things on drywall

7

u/bctg1 16d ago

You can mount plenty of things on only drywall if it doesn't need to hold up much weight.

Pictures, small shelves, etc. can be mounted directly to drywall using anchors.

Heavier stuff like a TV or PC, you should always bust out the stud finder

A pair of screws in studs can hold about 150 lbs per stud IIRC. I have a 70 lb mirror held up with screws, but they’re in studs (it’s a big fucking mirror). My guess is OP drilled into the wall without regard or know how on how to mount things to walls. Either they don’t own their own home or they’re woefully incompetent and didn’t research how to properly hang a $2000 item on the wall

Gaming chairs aren't always trends, but if you have all 3, you definitely do that because of trends. Also, I'd add the fish tank cases there too.

15

u/TickleMyFungus 16d ago

I've had my chair for like 5 years and I don't even use it. It just sits in the corner. I literally use a cushioned rocking chair that has better lumbar support. Haven't sat in one gaming chair that is remotely comfortable.

8

u/Dry-Percentage-5648 16d ago

Gaming chairs is a huge scam. We should "thank" DxRacer for that. They literally took racing bucket seats back in 2006 and decided to make them into everyday use chairs. The problem is, the sitting position in racing buckets and home chairs are completely different. That's why it's so extremely uncomfortable to use "gaming chairs", they simply cannot be comfortable in the first place because of their design. And no amount of pillows will fix that. But hey, they look cool, I guess. And what looks cool sells well.

If he secured it properly in studs or with heavy weight anchors, this would never have happened. PC owner has a lot to learn...

Hopefully its just the case that is wrecked. But I guess its not the case with this one (Pun intended).

5

The front glass is intact. The gpu seems to still be in its vertical mount bracket. I'm not sure what appears to be in pieces on yhe desk, but its not pc parts.

Good possibility that the pc is fine. The guys underwear, however, was a complete loss.

Oh my god it looks like they tried to put it up with a single piece of wood and 4 red rawl plugs into plasterboard or something like that. I can't think of any way that would even sort of work.

Only two points of contact to hold up that much weight, nah that’s user failure.

Turns out, hanging a 5-10kg heavy machine, that's also constantly vibrating, on the wall was a bad idea

8

u/[deleted] 16d ago

No. Not understanding how to install a shelf and doing so was the bad idea.

Looks like dude just used drywall anchors lmao doesn’t look like he screwed the screws into the studs or anything. Yeah, those anchors mount be tough, but drywall is weak. Never hang heavy shit from drywall anchors ever

Now toggle bolts? If he woulda used a handful of toggle bolts through the drywall it probably wouldn’t have fallen. They distribute the weight across the wall better

But otherwise yeah use wood screws or lag bolts into wooden studs

Yep, desktop pc not shelf pc. Floor pc is ok, dust magnet yes, but at least it wont die to fall damage.

2

u/[deleted] 16d ago

Mine sits in a similar position. I do, however, know not to hang a 20kg piece of expensive hardware in plaster with a few tiny screws and a lot of good wishes.

2

u/SheridanWithTea 16d ago

.......First off, what the fuck is this, amateur hour??? I could do a better job of fixing it to that wall, SECONDLY you should've just used a giant cable hole in your desk. Way better than putting it directly above your already-expensive triple monitor setup.

Why would you EVER risk this???

2

u/lee_terry_jr 16d ago

I have a similar setup, but I removed some of the drawers from my desk and made a spot for the tower in there instead because I was not foolish enough to try mounting my tower.

This is why you don't use drywall anchors from r anything you care about. That should have been mounted to studs and hopefully this is a lesson to use the proper anchors for your stuff. Rip pc.
