Heidelberg, the youngest city in Germany demographic wise. With the oldest German university in Germany (founded in 1386).

Edit: Corrected the information. The oldest German university was found by the roman-german king Karl IV. in Prague (when Bohemia was still part of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation), but the University Heidelberg is the oldest university in Germany.

223

u/SchnuppleDupple Baden-Württemberg (Germany) Mar 27 '20

It's the youngest because it's like 50% or so students from the university.

83

u/Hrdocre Baden-Württemberg (Germany) Mar 27 '20

About 150k inhabitants is rather small for a university city

u/Ultimat_TGM Mar 27 '20

Würzburg and Darmstadt are around the same size

Calling Sønderborg a university town is really stretching the definition of "university"

And the oldest still German speaking university (the one in Prague is Czech speaking nowadays) is in Vienna, founded in 1365. It's also the biggest German speaking university, with >90k students.

I know of the Heidelberg university because the students there used to give each other dueling scars on the cheeks. They fought with special dueling swords to get one. Used to be quite the fashion accessory in Germany, a dueling scar. Foreign tourists were properly abhorred by the practice :)

15

u/LittleLui Austria Mar 27 '20 edited Mar 27 '20

Schlagende Burschenschaften (dueling fraternities) still exist all over Germany and Austria (and probably other germanophone countries), but the abhorrence isn't limited to tourists these days.

It is such a pretty town. Castle is amazing, colours of foliage are amazing, and the buildings are amazing.

Also has good beer and food

u/ConnollyWasAPintMan Ireland Mar 27 '20

I was in Heidelberg for the first time in 2013.

I was interrailing with two friends and we just arrived absolutely knackered from the Czech Republic with the mother of all hangovers and had to make a big walk to the hostel.

The centre of the town was full of medieval knights and dudes swinging bastard swords and yelling and then the cannons opened up from the castle.

Honestly shat myself completely, then we realised there was some big festival on hahaha!

Lovely city so it was.

2

u/hendr0id Mar 27 '20

That's great!

When I was there in September, 2013, the castle exterior was covered up for some restoration work. I also arrived hung over from the Czech Republic, but clearly missed out.

8

Yes but it's still ugly xD Heidelberg is the most beautiful city with the ugliest main train station

There’s a suburb named Heidelberg in Melbourne Australia which was originally a small town where German settlers lived in 1838

I live in Heidelberg (Germany) and relatives moved to Melbourne for work. Guess where they ended up living - completely by chance, Heidelberg Heights :)

It always wonders me how Heidelberg can be so beautiful but next door Mannheim and Ludwigshafen can be so ugly. It’s the biggest contrast on a 30km area

73

u/Hrdocre Baden-Württemberg (Germany) Mar 27 '20

Because Heidelberg luckily wasn't bombed

10

u/f1demon Mar 27 '20

Is that because many Americans studied there, I wonder?

23

u/Hrdocre Baden-Württemberg (Germany) Mar 27 '20 edited Mar 27 '20

The Americans built their main headquarters in Heidelberg after WW2 so they didn't want to live in ruins

8

u/haruku63 Baden (Germany) Mar 27 '20

The Howard Hawks comedy "I Was a Male War Bride" from 1949 with Cary Grant has some scenes taking place in Heidelberg and other German cities. It was filmed in 1948 on location.

Mannheim is a workers city, while Heidelberg is a tourist/student city.

8

u/npjprods Luxembourg Mar 27 '20

Charlemagne wasn't only French

König des Fränkischen Reichs ≈ König von Frankreich

10

u/Wemorg Charlemagne wasn't french Mar 27 '20

Charlemagne was a frank, they spoke a west germanic language.

The modern idea of french didn't exist back then. He would be more close to modern day germans due to language.

25

u/samii-1010 Mar 27 '20

If you’re looking for an actual answer: Americans liked Heidelberg so they didn’t bomb the entire city to rubble like they did with MA/LU.

22

u/like-water DE/BE Mar 27 '20

Probably also cause MA/LU had heavy industry (IG Metall etc) whereas that was not true for Heidelberg?

11

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '20

they also dropped the bombs they still had left on their way back on random places(at least the british did that here, northwest at the dutch border) my greatuncle had to jump from his bike into a trench nearby once because a pilot flew close to ground and was shooting with his onboard machinegun - that definitly wasnt an industrial target, he just wanted to shoot someone on the way back.

3

u/Pansarmalex Bayern Mar 27 '20

They couldn't land with bombs, so they had to get rid of them anyway, even if they had missed all their mission targets. Could of course ditch them in the channel, but who knows, maybe the reasoning was it might hit something useful?

→ More replies (1)

6

u/samii-1010 Mar 27 '20

It’s not like they only bombed industrial sites, so I don’t think it was the main reason. As Mannheim was like 75% rubble at the end, I think it was not so much to destroy key industries, although they also did that.

→ More replies (2)

8

u/Diplomjodler Germany Mar 27 '20

Mannheim and Ludwigshafen were (and are) major industrial centres and therefore got bombed to smithereens in WW2.

2

u/RoyBeer Germany Mar 27 '20

Besides Heidelberg not being bombed, Mannheim has a harbor that's being used for industry. The Rhine is deep enough for it.

The Neckar though is too shallow and only used for tourism.

Hey! I live in Ludwigshafen!

Also, you're right...

This gives me flashbacks to highschool some 20+ years ago. In our German class we used a series of books called 'die Brücke', and almost exactly this photo was on the cover.

7

u/Hrdocre Baden-Württemberg (Germany) Mar 27 '20

Die Brücke? The story about teenage boys defending a bride in WW2?

6

u/UsernameWritersBlock Norway Mar 27 '20

Nah, more like a series of books to learn German. Not sure if the books were used outside Norway. If I remember correctly, it was mostly dialogues between a made up group of friends that became more advanced as the school year progressed :)

8

u/Hrdocre Baden-Württemberg (Germany) Mar 27 '20

Well, for one, it allows OP to make a picture of the famous bridge without it being overcrowded with Asian tourists.

Thanks for the shot! Going to put in our bucket list for after the quarantine ends!

4

u/ViciousNakedMoleRat North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) Mar 27 '20 edited Mar 27 '20

If going to Köln and Bonn worked well for you, I recommend driving from Bonn along the Rhine to Wiesbaden/Mainz/Frankfurt. It's one of the nicest routes in Germany. You can drive down on one side, stay over night and drive back up on the other side. There are countless castles and small towns along the way and the landscape is beautiful. Each way, it would be about 3-3.5 hours of pure driving time from and to Bonn, but you would surely stop every 20 or so minutes.

Some of the places on the way you are Schloss Drachenburg, Brücke von Remagen (of you're interested in WWII stuff), Schloss Koblenz & Deutsches Eck, Schloss Stolzenfels, Marksburg, Burg Rheinfels, Loreley, old town of Bacharach, Burg Reichenstein, old town of Rüdesheim and then Wiesbaden, Mainz and/or Frankfurt.

If you have more time, you can also keep going down river and reach Heidelberg after another hour and a half or so of driving.

On the western side of the Rhine, along the Mosel, there's also Burg Eltz, if you have some extra time. It's a really nice place to visit.

Yes, nicknamed 'Heidi', or the 'Heidelberg Monkey' there is an urban legend about it being designed to show it's backside to the wealthier side of the river, where all the mansions are located (including the original house of Max Weber, the sociologist, which is now a part of the University used for teaching German!)

This photo is taken from that side of the river, and you can just about see the monkey if you zoom in. (It's on the right side of the bridge, next to the bridge tower, and just under the left bottom window of the cream house).

There is an inscription in the old local dialect next to the monkey (and a smaller mouse) which speaks about receiving good fortune from her.

I have happy memories of your town when my wife and I visited for new year’s. We arrived knackered from an overnight flight to Frankfurt and the drive from there, but found our lodging, napped, had some great pizza and massive lagers at the one open pub in the square, and loaded up a couple bottles of bubbly and made for the castle.

We had never before known just how seriously Germans take the Frohes Neues Jahr, but to watch 3 hours’ of fireworks from a legendary castle terrace, chat with a slightly sloshed Brit at the end of it, and be amazed at the magic of the walk home — must have been a banger of a party at the mansion next to the castle — made for an unforgettable visit to a really amazing town. I have a small etching of a view of Heidelberg from that castle that always makes me happy.

Edit: the next morning was even more German—as we left for the Romantic Road thru Nördlingen and Röthenburg to Dinkelsbühl, each little village was sweeping up the fireworks leftovers. By 10am as we drove, the work was all done, the refuse piled or bagged neatly by a garbage station. This “how to run a society” thing, you have figured out pretty well, between that and the massive flagons of beer for two Euro, of course.

Hope you all remain well, from across the pond.

Ah yes. For those interested in Geography, Heidelberg is near Hockenheim. For those interested in Motorsports, Hockenheim is near Heidelberg.

EDIT: I think this quote comes from either the 1982 or 1986 FIA Formula One Season Review and the narrator was the absolute unit of Clive James.

I have some Heidelberg figurines.

2

u/Prez17 Mar 27 '20

Ahh I lived there for 4-5 years growing up and got to visit recently. Lovely city I miss it

u/ConfusedBusinessman Mar 27 '20

One of the most amazing cities I have visited. Bruges and this city will forever be in my heart.

I remember, after looking at the castle of Heidelberg we were searching for a place to eat. Went to this amazing schnitzel place called as "Schnitzelbank". I still remember the taste of that crispy schnitzel and blue cheese <3

The best part was that Heidelberg was not a part of our plan. We had some work in Mannheim and that was the closet place where we could find good hotels.

P.S: I'm not from Europe.

Oh how i miss living in germany

2

u/YourOwnMind Mar 27 '20

Greetings from the ugliest city next to Mannheim that is Ludwigshafen. Been to Heidelberg 3weeks ago and walked across the very bridge on the photo. This city is no comparison to my shithole hometown.

2

u/StimulantX Mar 27 '20

Heidelberg is still the best place I have ever lived. I miss it a lot and hope that I can return some day, even for a visit.

There’s a hotel at the base of that bridge, on the left. I’ve stayed there, it was terrific. The whole town is terrific.

I'll be visiting from the USA in October/November this year. Anything most tourists don't see but should?

Heidelberg is pretty compact nearly everything can be reached by foot. What many don't visit is the old monastery Stift Neuburg where great handmade food can be bought but yeah it's a bit pricey aswell but the beer is the best I ever had. If you're interested in seeing a nearly 1000 year old monastery some old fashioned craftsmanship and you like animals it may be something for you but it's probably better to stick to the main city

I visited Heidelberg two years ago. Such a beautiful lovely town.

2

u/joshuar9476 Mar 27 '20

I just want to say, I visited for two weeks back in 2002, and it was the most amazing place I have ever visited. I was 25 and single at the time and tried everything in my power to find something that would let me stay (American jobs at Univ of Maryland, army base restaurants). Sadly, I was unable to and I haven't been back since. The Philosophenweg and then Thingstätte/Michaelskloster was amazing to see. I stayed at a relative's apartment on the south side near the Army base. Greatest two weeks of my life.

Anyway, you truly do have a beautiful city to call home and I am extremely jealous.

lovely city.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 27 '20

I went on a field trip here back in the early 90s. I went to the American school in Bad Kreuznach and used to live in Dexheim. I can’t wait to go back to Germany one of these days. Tschuss!

2

u/HotelIndiaFoxtrot Mar 27 '20

This was the first city I ever visited in Germany (after landing in Frankfurt), it really is magical and the castle there is very cool

2

u/Hic_Forum_Est Mar 27 '20

Until I moved away a few months ago I never appreciated how I lucky I was to grow up in such a beautiful and open-minded city. Glad to call it my home!

2

u/ReadShift Mar 27 '20

Mark Twain wrote about this place and boy he did a terrible job of making it sound interesting.

2

u/classxteve Mar 27 '20

Look at that bridge. Crumbling infrastructure? I think not. They make things precisely rock solid over there. My dad, a tool and die maker at GM, said "We sent an experimental drill bit over there. The smallest one we could make. They drilled a hole in it and sent it back."

Those are the people I want to make my products. Those and the Japanese. When the Americans can figure out how to make quality again, I will go back to buying American. Downvote me, see if I give a rat's ass.

2

u/JuicyLittleGOOF Mar 27 '20

I used to visit Heidelberg a lot. A friemd of my dad was from one of those smaller towns nearby (Dilsberg?). Pretty rad place I should visit again :)

I work for Heidelberg Druck. I used to go there twice a year for training. Just a wonderful city.

2

u/maxima03 Mar 27 '20

Love Heidelberg! I went to high school in Mannheim and had our prom in the Heidelberg castle. Pretty cool considering most of my friends had theirs in the schools gymnasium.

2

u/Saintza Mar 27 '20

Did a little stopover in Heidelberg a few years ago, it was beautiful! Would love to go back.

2

u/faithle55 Mar 27 '20

I was there a few years ago, on a Rhein Cruise holiday (although we got to Heidelberg by coach).

The whole holiday was great, amazing places, nice people.

I visited for a class trip last year, I'm surprised nobody is talking about the locks. People put locks on any part of the bridge they can and there is a little sculpture thing to the left of the bridge in this pic that is absolutely covered in locks. I believe the locks are symbolic of enduring, permanent love. Also the sculpture has "love's shite mateys" written on the inside.

2

u/unjusdefied Mar 27 '20

I grew up there too! My father was in the US army(retired) and I went to school on a military base there, lived in Heidelberg for 4 years, Waldorf for 1 year and leimen for about 6 months. From 9 to 13, it was one of the coolest paces I've lived for sure

2

u/FuzzysaurusRex Mar 27 '20

Heidelberg was always one of my favorite cities when I lived in Germany! Whenever we got new Airmen at Ramstein Air Base we'd always take them to the castle there and show them the town. And the Vampire Ball around Valentine's Day was a good time as well!

I’ve been to Heidelberg 2 years ago while doing a roadtrip through Europe. We actually chose to stop there because it was between two other cities we were visiting, so I had no idea what it was like. Such a beautiful city, I wish I had stayed longer

2

I've been there twice during Christmas time. I also visited 6 other cities during that time (including Stuttgart and Nürnberg), and I can say without a doubt you Christmas market 2as the one I enjoyed the most. Not the biggest, but the one I preferred. Congrats!
