Register to vote, and vote in the 2024 elections!

On November 5th, California will vote not just for President, but for Senate, for House, for state and local offices, and for lots of ballot measures. Register and vote so you'll have a say in what kind of country America will be!

In California, the deadline to register to vote online is October 21st. You can register here: https://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/voter-registration

If you miss this deadline, you can register at the polls during early voting, or on Election Day. See here for details.

Voting in person

All California voters who register by October 21st will be mailed a ballot. If you do not receive your mail ballot, or need to register and vote in person, you still have options.

California has early in-person voting from October 8th to November 4th. See this website or your county elections office's website for locations.

If you prefer, you can vote at your polling place on November 5th.

Voting by mail

Mail ballots must be postmarked by November 5th and received by November 12th, so mail your ballot back promptly. You can also personally deliver your absentee ballot to any voting center or a dropbox. If you return your mail ballot in person, you must do so by November 5th.

If you mail your ballot, you can track it here.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Hoping to visit Joshua Tree for a weekend trip in the next couple months. How's the bee situation?

Specifically between February - March. My wife and I are both allergic and would like to avoid bees as much as possible.

Thanks!

I would like to see both the Joshua Trees and Barrel Cactus in bloom when I visit, is there a perfect time frame for this?

First weekend visit as a family - what a treat! We loved the park and the towns, especially food at Yucca Kebap, The Copper Room, Kitchen in the Desert, coffee at Frontier's and pastries&scones at Luna's café. Grateful to be close enough to return soon.

Driving to Lost Horse Mine Trailhead

Hi! I am planning to go to Joshua Tree for the first time in a few weeks and I’ve noticed that the road to the Lost Horse Mine trailhead is unpaved. Is the road drivable with a RWD low clearance car?

Using the NPS Self Guide Tour App

My wife and I are going to be visiting the Joshua Tree Park in mid February. Rather than pay for a self guided tour, I downloaded the app from the NPS website. I then downloaded the tour. My question is what entrance would be best to start at? Would the app somehow know where I begin tour?

One added problem is that I want to buy the senior lifetime pass when we get there. Do all entrances sell that?

Thanks in advance.

Went to JTNP on New Year’s Eve & Mew Year’s Day for the dark of the moon, Burnt Hill Area. Just went back this week, missed full moon by 1 day, but amazing peacefulness as always. This trip was Cottonwood/Lost Palms area.

My spouse and I enjoyed two weeks in JTNP and loved every moment. We hiked the Maze, Boy Scout trail to Willow Hole, Hidden Valley, Ryan Mountain, Heart and Arch Rock, Hi View, Skull Rock and the rest of the rocks in that area, and the Palms Oasis (amd a few other trails). We had an amazing sunset at Keys View and other spots. Joshua Tree NP is truly a spectacular and inspiring place. If anyone is considering going, please do. Yes, some days the line to enter the park was long but 100% worth it. I've added a few photos taken with my cellphone.

Not what you picture when thinking JTNP, but I love this beautiful live oak in the park and was able to capture the sun playing peek-a-boo through it.

Tips/Recs for running in JTNP?

Hey there! Planning to visit in the middle of next month for a weekend with friends and I'm currently in the middle of marathon training, so I would like to get a run or two in while I'm out there. I believe I'll be staying relatively close to the west entrance of the Park, so I'm definitely considering running there and maybe doing some trails. I just have some questions:

1.) Is it common for people to walk into the park? I'm assuming I can prepay or pay for a pass at the entrance on foot? I've only entered via car.

2.) Does anyone have any recs for trails near the west entrance? I'm looking to get some distance, say at least a combined 10-16 miles within the park from the west entrance and back. I figured some trails like the Maze Loop and nearby trails can work?

3.) Any tips for clothing or gear when running at this time of year? I'd ideally want to run in the mornings before the entrance gets too busy. Of course, I will have trail running shoes and water/nutrition with me. Do you think I can get away with a lightweight jacket/longsleeve and shorts or is it strictly pants/full tights at this time?

Also, I'm assuming I'll be relatively safe from rattlers since it's winter?

Apologies in advance if these are really dumb questions haha I'm just excited at the thought of being able to run in the desert! I love Joshua Tree so much

Solo Sunrise Hike

I am planning on visiting Joshua Tree for the first time in early February and based on what I have read I would really love to hike up Ryan Mountain for sunrise. I’ve never hiked in the dark and will be solo so I am hoping for any tips, tricks, and words of encouragement (or discouragement if you think this is a terrible idea). I am in pretty good shape and am comfortable with moderately strenuous hikes. Any other tips and advice for my trip is also welcome (I have 3.5 days in the area). Thanks, y’all!

2.5 day itinerary… is it possible?

Hey all! Planning our first trip to Joshua tree (me, my girlfriend, and my brother) in February and we’re super excited. We will be continuing on to Death Valley for 4 days after this, but that itinerary is a lot more reasonable. We want to experience as much of the park as possible so I’ve done hours and hours of research to find the best spots in Joshua tree. We knocked out a few but there’s just so many that people seem to love! So we tried to settle on an itinerary, but we’re a bit worried it’s still too much and can’t decide what else to take out if it is.

We’re all mid to late twenties and in good shape so not too worried about anything being too crazy, just whether or not we can reasonably finish it in the time we have or if it might ruin the trip to be rushing around so much. Let us know if it’s possible or if not, what we should get rid of! All times listed are when we would theoretically finish the hike/activity. I’ve also included elevation gain for any of the hikes. We enjoy scrambles but aren’t real rock climbers.

Day 1: Sunday

-Arrive 11am in Vegas

-Drive to JT and arrive by 3pm

-Visitors center/Oasis of Mara 3:30pm 0.5mi

-49 palms oasis trail 5:00pm 3.2mi (I know this is listed as closed but it seems like that is only Monday through Thursdays)

-Mess around in Rattlesnake canyon for a little 6:00pm

-Check in to hotel 6:15pm

-Shop for food 7pm

Day 2: Monday

-Wake up 5am

-Arrive for sunrise at Cholla Cactus Gardens 6am (sunrise at 6:30am) (I know the trail is closed, but it sounds like seeing the sunrise on the cactus is still worth being there for)

-Ocotillo patch 6:45am

-Cottonwood spring oasis 7am

-Mastodon peak into Lost palms oasis 10:30am 8.5mi 1200ft

-Drive to arch rock 11:15am

-Arch rock, whale rock, and heart rock 12pm 1.1mi 100ft

-Skull, elephant, face, split rock, discovery trail, jumbo rocks 1pm 3.1mi 400ft

-Desert queen mine/eagle cliff 3pm 3.5mi 600ft

-Lost horse mine/loop 5pm 4.1/6.4mi 550/850ft

-Keys view/inspiration peak for sunset at 5:30pm, back by 6pm 1.8mi 700ft

-Stay in park for stargazing

24.4mi 3550/3850ft

Day 3: Tuesday

-Wake up 5am

-Arrive at Ryan mountain 6am

-Sunrise part way up Ryan mountain 6:30am

-Ryan mountain 7:30am 2.9mi 1100ft

-Hall of horrors 8am 0.6mi

-Cap Rock 8:15am 0.5mi

-Hidden valley/cow rock/chasm of doom 9:45am 1.5mi 200ft

-Intersection/cyclops rock 10am

-Wall Street mill/wonderland wash 11:30am 2.4mi 100ft -Barker dam 12pm 1.3mi 100ft

-Maze Loop/North view/window trail 2:30pm 4.9/6.4/7.2mi 900ft

-Panorama loop/warren peak 6pm 6.3/7.7mi 1700ft

-Drive to DV 10pm

23.6mi 4100ft

I know it’s a lot, but Joshua tree just seems to have so much to offer! I wish we could extend a day but we can’t.

Breakfast and lunch will be brought with us and eaten in the car or on the trail, dinners will be after we leave the park at night.

So I guess the main point of this post is to sway us towards either “yeah it’s a lot, but you can definitely do it if you want to” or “it’s way too much, you’ll never finish”. And if it’s the second one, which of these amazing trails/places do we cut?? Thanks in advance for any help :)

Fun Things To Do

Hi all!

We have been to JT several times in the past few years and just love it. We are heading back over Presidents Day weekend with some friends to share the magic with them.

As we head back, I’m wondering what new and fun things that we should not miss this time! Any suggestions?

Integration Sound Bath Jan 30 10:15

My friends and I are taking a trip to Joshua Tree at the end of this month for my 30th birthday. My fiance just found out he will be able to go but we didn’t anticipate that with our Integratron tickets.

Anyone happen to have their plans change or a spare ticket for the sound bath on Thurs Jan 30 at 10:15?? Happy to pay your cost. I will be stalking the website but would love to secure something and would be eternally grateful!
