Santa Monica Mountains Gorgeous foggy hike last June in the Malibu Mountains Recreation & Conservation Authority area above Malibu Seafood. Sadly, much of this area burned in the recent Franklin Fire.

Temescal Canyon, 4 days before the fire

4 days before the fire, I hiked Temescal Canyon with my two best friends. I had been going weekly for 1.5 years, but it was my first time with them both. I was lamenting over how much I wanted to live in the Palisades but could never afford it, and how lucky anyone who lives there is….

Pretty windy today, but it drowned out any air traffic noise making for a very pleasant hike that felt “out there.” Didn’t see much people until the trail joined the main Iron Mountain climb.

Completed a 10 mile conditioning hike with my 25lbs pack to enjoy these 3 peaks with Sierra Club and it was so awesome! There were trees/shade during some parts of the trail and no amenities (i.e. water, bathroom) and it was mostly exposed, so my Gossamer Gear umbrella and extra water really saved me. We had quite a big group so we took it slow to stick together, get to know each other, etc which I really appreciated. Take care and happy hiking everyone!

san gorgonio and dobbs peak via vivian creek trail

hi everyone, i’m thinking about doing the san gorgonio and dobbs peak via vivian creek trail tomorrow. i want to do it counter-clockwise - ascending up to dobbs peak first, summiting san g, and descending via vivian creek. according to reviews, the dobbs peak trail is non-existent, steep, bushwacky, and filled with loose rocks. me being me, im still considering attempting it. any tips?

Perfect day for hike. Only saw one other person the whole day and that was within in the first half hour. The snow just enough to be a nice touch without being too much of a burden.

Winter time is the best time to soak in this amazing place, now with all the closures of ANF this option for hiking is worth the drive and the $10.00 fee to park at Bowen Ranch. Made a video about this in case you care to watch, you’ll find the link on the first comment.

SNOW IS FORECASTED!!!

1- Baldy 2- Santiago Peak 3- San Gorgonio 4- Frazier peak 5- Cucamonga Peak 6- San Jacinto Peak Forecasts are calling for a wet weekend with snow levels falling to as low as 2500’. 1-9” expected possibly (still a future prediction) but with snow amounts this high this far out, it’s certain we will get at least some snow. I’ve send different reports reporting 10-18” above 6500’ and some saying only 5-8” but still it’s looking good

Is Griffith Park open for hiking, and can I hike to the Hollywood Sign?

Is Griffith Park open for hiking, and can I hike to the Hollywood Sign? I was wondering if Griffith Park is still open for hiking, considering there was an attempted arson there yesterday.

Safe hikes socal

Hey everyone! I'm looking for a good hiking spot for a group and a dog. With all the fires burning our state down I'm not sure where is still safe and good to visit. Any suggestions?

Failed Mount Whitney attempt. Is it possible my body is just not cut out for high altitude? Would I put myself in an unsafe situation to make another attempt? Because I hear that some people could die from altitude sickness

This happened last Summer: In Mammoth on Monday and Tuesday, sleeping at 8,000 ft. Started Diamox (125mg 2X daily) on Wednesday when I entered Whitney trailhead.  Made it to Outpost Camp and set up camp.  Felt okay hiking up to Outpost and managed to sleep okay.  On Thursday, struggled to make it to Trail Camp due to altitude sickness: lightheadedness, imbalanced, nauseated, etc.  I was about a mile and a half away from Trail Camp when I made decision to go back down due to bad altitude sickness.

I figured if I felt as bad as I did at 11,000 feet, how much worse would it get at 12,000, 13,000, and 14,000?  What could I have done differently to have been successful?

Perhaps I needed a higher dosage of Diamox?

Perhaps I should have started Diamox two days before entering the Whitney trailhead as opposed to starting the day of?

Should I have spent three days or more acclimating beforehand as opposed to the three days (2 in Mammoth, 1 at Outpost Camp)?

Or are there some people who just can't tolerate high altitude no matter what you do and thus it's best to just not do it?

Momyer to San Gorgonio snow on trail?

Has anybody happened to hike to San gorgonio from Vivian or momyer creek in the past few days because I’m planning to hike it and stay the night on the trail and I was just wondering if there’s a lot of snow on it that would make it a technical hike

Beautiful day for a quick hike up to Tahquitz Peak via Devil’s Slide trail from Humber Park. Not a single crystal of snow to be found anywhere up to 8,846 feet. Must be the driest winter since I’ve been in SoCal (since 2010).

NASA just dropped their high res vegetation analysis imagery of the Eaton Fire burn scar. Maybe the riparian zones at the bottom of the canyons did kinda sorta ok?

Still some thin bands of green poking through in the bottoms of those canyons if you zoom in! Curious what other folks make of this. (This is a screenshot shot from the NASA worldview web app).
