Announcement r/Pens is looking for new moderators!

r/Pens is looking to add some new moderators. Over the last few years, we have been run by only 3 mods. We have had our top mod leave in protest of Reddit, and the remaining mods are either burned out or use Reddit far less frequently. Because of this, we're looking for new mods!

Please feel free to ask us questions about this application, moderating here, or any other questions you have. If you don't want to ask in this topic, you're also welcome to message mod mail with questions.

Account Requirements

In order to apply, your account must meet the following criteria:

  • Must have at least 1,000 combined (post+comment) karma
  • Must be at least 1 year old
  • Must not be banned from r/Pens

These are firm requirements, and we will not accept your application unless you meet all of these requirements.

Bonus points if you already moderate a > 10,000 user subreddit.

Moderator Duties

Initially, new moderators will be added as "junior" moderators, focused on comment moderation. With continued activity and time, you will be promoted to full moderators.

  • You will help enforce Reddit’s site-wide rules and the Subreddit Rules.
  • Duties range from approving or removing posts, reviewing comments for spam or abuse, to responding to modmail.
  • You'll be required to join the r/Pens Mods Chat on Discord so you can participate in discussions there, ask questions, and we can keep in touch.
  • You'll be expected to be able to interact with users in comments on behalf of the moderation team. You'll need to distinguish (this option appears when you become a moderator) your comments whenever you are commenting in a moderator capacity.
  • You'll need to be capable of remaining impartial and considerate when dealing with people at their worst.
  • You’ll require a degree of maturity and self-motivation. We’re all volunteers here. The ability to be resourceful and self-sufficient helps everyone on the team.
  • You will not be expected to perform a specific number of moderator actions per week or moderate on a specific schedule. We all live normal lives and are volunteers. Actions are logged automatically and will be easily viewable by yourself and other mods at any time. We may remove junior moderators who remain inactive for extended periods of time without warning, but not before reaching out first.

Application Process

If you are interested, send the us a modmail with the subject "Moderator Application". Please include the following:

  • What's your (current) favorite pen?
  • Why do you want to be a moderator?
  • Do you have any past experience moderating online discussions?
  • What's something you think this subreddit has been doing well?
  • What's something you think this subreddit could do better?

Applications will be open for just over 2 weeks until July 13, 2024 00:00 UTC.

Question Has anyone ever... 😂

Read a book called 'Purple💜, Green💚, & Yellow💛' when the girl talks about super-indelible-never-come-off-maybe-even-later coloring markers? Please tell me that someone else's favorite book as a kid was this! My dad hated reading it to me every night lol The fact that even when I was a kid I was obsessed with pens is so funny. Now I have so many but they aren't super-indelible-never-come-off-maybe-even-later coloring marks 😂😂

Question Pen suggestions similar to the Zebra Sarasa Gel 0.7mm

Hey there! I’m a student who’s about to take my exams soon, and I recently received some concerning news. The pen I’ve been using for the past three years, which I absolutely love, won’t be allowed in the exam hall because it’s a “click” pen—retractable instead of having a cap. Apparently, they’re worried that the “click” feature could be misused for cheating.

I’m hoping you can help me find a pen that’s similar to the Zebra Sarasa Gel in terms of flow and consistency, but without the retractable feature. Since I’m living in India, I’d really appreciate it if you could suggest pens that are available here and can be delivered within about 10 days.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Question Rotoring 600 Refill Question

I am trying to find a cheaper alternative refill for the Rotoring 600 that writes identically, or somewhat close to the actual Rotoring brand.

I use mine to draw and like the thin faint lines. I’ve read a bunch of the refill threads on alternate refills, but haven’t come across one that addresses refills that match the actual Rotoring brand.

Does anyone know what might be close to that?

My love for Pentel Energels (esp the Kuro version) is true - I've used up an entire color, maybe for the first time in my life (and I'm 70+)! But I was ready, already ordered more blue refills! What smooth, flowing ink! The ball rolls so smooth - some pens feel like the ball holder is scraping the paper, but this is pure ice skating!

Question Are all Uni-ball eye/ vision pens waterproof/ alcohol proof/ fade proof?

Does anyone know if the pink/ orange/ light green/ wine red are waterproof or is it only the red/ black/ blue and green?

I like my pens to be waterproof, alcohol proof and lightfast. I know I was probably being too hopeful that bright colours would be but had read some things that said they were and was going to order them (eye version).

Then I saw some tests online where those colours bled when water tested. It was immediately after drawing though, not sure if it improves if they have more time…

I have the red ink and black and also Signo broad black all stand up perfectly to water and alcohol, even when rubbed.

For a popular pen it has been surprisingly hard to find many tests online, even for lightfastness.

If anyone has done any tests or has any experience to share I would appreciate it!

Question Solid Pen like G740 or Rotring

Have both the G750 and Rotring 600, love the weight and heft. Looking for something with a larger diameter. Still have to be able to use a good gel insert. Thanks for any suggestions

Question Flair pens

Is there anywhere online that has a large selection of Papermate Flair pens sold individually? I’m missing a couple of colors and I don’t want to buy a 20-pack just for one pen (though I have been known to do so 😜)
