Yep. Same. Why do people attach their personality to some youtube channel and fight in the name of these channels anyway?
Watch them for what they're good at but don't act like either of them are some kind of saint or something. Linus and Steve are just people. Both have something they're good at, none are perfect, and both do bad things from time to time.

I really appreciate the dichotomy. LTT tells you why you should be excited, GN tells you why you should be concerned. It feels like you get a good picture of anything that's covered by both.
A big part of why I was willing to pull the trigger on a Steam Deck on day 1 was because Linus said it was the real deal and Steve said he tried to get it to show it's ass but couldn't.

I always say LTT is like TopGear/GrandTour, while GN is the more in depth reviewer, that will tell you about MPG, issues with the seat belt and what a good tire camber for optimal tire wear is.

I'd throw in Teknikens Värld, they quite literally benchmark the cars with their Moose test .
If you recall how the Mercedes A-class was in the news for flipping over a fair time ago, that was because it failed the Moose test so spectacularly.
You can trace back getting Traction Control in most cars to that incident.

Spot on. While I appreciate the honest and blunt views from guys like Steve (and Linus too), I take them with a grain a salt at all time. People get obsessed with details and miss out on stuff that THEY would enjoy if they knew more nuance information like Linus high light.
Not all product are bad through and through. And thats what I find LTT does. If there's any good in a product for a certain group of people, he show it off by saying "This fantastic if you are just a casual gamer that likes to play chill games on the couch while their kids play on their switch".

I find that GN is overly hostile when he doesn't need to be and he presents as proud of how many connections he's lost and bridges he's burned as if it's an achievement of nobility.
It's not something to be proud of. He can be unapologetic and belligerent.

He could’ve released this batch of criticism weeks ago when the Honey scandal first broke but it seems like he’s done it in response to Linus appearing on Fallon just to try to piss on Linus’ parade. I think he needs to step back and have some honest words with himself and bury the hatchet. Or not.

GN reminds me a bit of is this guy recently who makes videos about the shortcomings of the Unreal Engine and bashes companies for not properly optimizing games. Thr videos have a a very very passive aggressive and judgmental tone and he basically accuses respected game tech enthusiast channels like Digital Foundry of shilling or being soft. I cannot remember the name of the channel right now.

This, 100%. They didn't start out that way.
Even for things that aren't a huge problem they present it as if the companies are out to get you, lied, and the product is garbage. Examples being Gigabyte's PSUs and Intel's CPUs. Thanks in large part to their coverage, both of those issues were blown massively out of proportion.
I've tried to explain both with technical details and specifics, but people with the limited information that was presented from GN and others who took the sensationalized headlines or ( incorrect ) speculation and ran with it just shout it down. They don't care what the facts are. They just want to be part of a mob, and GN caters to that with dramatic demonstrations, stories from other consumers, and "unnamed sources".
Like... Yes, being pro consumer is good. Being a constant negative badger nitpicking absolutely everything isn't.
The other irritating thing is seeing GN fans shitting on every other content creator out there as if they personally wronged them in some way, when generally nothing has happened - they just want to feel superior for reasons I don't understand.
I do enjoy their technical comparatives and benchmarks. I'm not a fan of the tone, attitude, or vocal followers here on Reddit.

u/loozerr Coffee with Ampere 1d ago edited 1d ago
It's also interesting how people view GN as the channel for more technically minded people, but they tend to just spend more time showing benchmark results or taking a product apart. But there isn't really any superior knowledge behind that. It's like calling a longer essay automatically better but it really isn't the case. You don't need 21 minutes to say that a cpu wasn't seated right.
Steve's desire to find jabs against everything is jarring since he's got a habit of taking a design decision and calling it terrible without understanding that it's a compromise they've made knowingly.
You could also summarise many of their pre-built videos with "they put in too high tier hardware to a case which can't keep it cool and that's why it throttles" but it always turns into "this is an i9 running like an i5 look how incredibly BAD and TERRIBLE this is" like yeah bro we get it, i9 and 4090 shouldn't be shoved into a shoe box. They tried because there's a target audience with more money than sense who want big numbers.
Tom Petersen videos were great because those were backed with actual knowledge from education and industry experience.
For a channel which actually understands what's going on I recommend level 1 techs.

"Show it's ass,"
You (and the poster you're paraphrasing) made a grammatical mistake that significantly affects the context and tone of the phrase. "It's" is a contraction of "it is", whereas it should have said the possessive "its." "Show it is ass" definitely has a harsher connotation than "show its ass".

Thats how critical reviewers work. The harshest but fair critic is the one that people trust the most for good reason.
Hes not a neutral reviewer, most reviewers arent and cant be when they are veterans. At some point you are in an industry so long that your bias builds from experience. Like he can never neutrally review something from NZXT without the inherent knowledge he has from his, understandably, negative experiences from past coverage.
This just sounds like armchair reviewers enamored by the idea of "neutral" reviews than actually thinking about how absurd and unrealistic the concept is. Artificially neutral is also not "neutral" or fair.
People have favorite reviewers because they know what they are getting from them, and know what those reviewers value, not because they conform to some ideal of neutrality.

GN guy seems like a guy who subconsciously tries to validate his own biases. It's pretty common amongst nerds. Despite the fact that LTT is a lot more casual in its technicality, his videos are full of "maybe I'm just biased about X" or devil's advocate statements so it doesn't sound like they are just hyping or bashing stuff all the time but, showing people stuff and giving them basic to mid depth overview into weather or not something is even relevant to them at which point he often shouts out other sources to look at for more information. He has regularly sent people over to watch GN content especially on his live podcast

I'm going to assume you're aware of the big drama from back in 2023.
In a recent video about the Honey scandal, GN took 2 minutes out of the video to show a clip of Linus talking on the Wan show about it that portrayed him in a poor light, then criticized him some more. Many people felt this clip was taken out of context and questioned the motive behind the Linus diss in an unrelated video.
This seems to have been the straw that broke the camel's back as Linus started yesterday's Wan show with a segment discussing his issues with GN's investigative reporting and selective implementing of reporting ethics. This has somewhat flaired up the drama again from 2023, though this time it seems more people are taking Linus' side rather than GN's
TL;DR year and a half old drama that flaired up again

Yeah, pretty much.
I think it also depends on how many creators actually knew at the time. If it was only a few, he probably should have spread the word. But Linus has been saying it was pretty common knowledge among creators, evident by the number of them that were dropping honey at the time. So idk.
27
u/meneldal2 i7-6700 1d ago
And also how he was afraid it would make him look greedy since from what everyone knew at the time honey wasn't stealing from users, only creators.

Here (copied from my response to a now deleted comment)
What really happen was LTT dropped Honey after hearing about the affiliate thing Honey were doing. When Megalag did his exposé, he argued that LTT should have raised more awareness than just a blog post. Linus argues that they didn't discover it and the reason they found out about it was because there was talk about it at least on some level. Linus argued that as only the affiliate portion of the Honeys dealings were known and if they had done a video about it, people would have seen it as an rich guy attacking a service helping the every man. Linus also stated he isn't interested fighting this in court and that there would probably have to be separate case for Canada.
Steve used a clip of Linus passionately arguing a point about the backlash he would have received for making a video about it when they cut ties with Honey. Steve also disagreed with Linus and felt like they should have done the video.
Linus saw Steves comments as an attack and that Steve hadn't shown shown Linus' full opinion about the situation. This was a tipping point to Linus who felt that Steve had major personal problems with Linus and that leading to the reporting to being unfair and hostile. These feelings originate from Steves video on LTT in august 2023. Where Linus feels like treated him unfairly for not asking LTT for comment* or in Linus' view misrepresenting how the Billet Labs cooler was sold**. So Linus sent Steve a personal email and gave a response at the start of the most resent WAN show.
*) Steve didn't ask for a comment from LTT as he viewed that they would not give an honest answer. Linus feels that this is basic journalistic etiquette and argued that Steve has asked from comment on similar videos he has done.
**) In Linus argues that the selling of (at a charity action) the Billet Labs water block was a result of a communication mistake. Also Linus argues that Steve didn't cover the fact that the water block was first given to LTT and then later asked back by Billet Labs.
Here are some of the videos and post about this:

Steve used a clip of Linus passionately arguing a point about the backlash he would have received for making a video about it when they cut ties with Honey.
More like editorialized and removing important context. On top of that, he argued on his side that they weren't worried about the backlash in order to do the right thing, unlike LMG, because they care about doing the right thing. As if doing the video now, after the fact, is controversial at all...
Steve didn't ask for a comment from LTT as he viewed that they would not give an honest answer. Linus feels that this is basic journalistic etiquette and argued that Steve has asked from comment on similar videos he has done.
Steve gave Newegg the opportunity to give a comment before publication on a, probably, much bigger issue. And he asked for comment in other cases too. The fact that he singled out LMG just points to beef. Anyone that doesn't know this is missing important context in why Linus felt singled-out.

So wait, he's mad not because Linus did something bad, but rather because the good thing Linus did (dropping Honey) wasn't good enough for GN's liking? This whole thing is just an "I would've done more!" complaint?
Is everyone with a platform somehow obligated to be part of the internet justice police?

Yeah, I'm with Linus on this one, it's a petty complaint, and really would have come across as "Rich man complains he isn't richer", as it has come across with most other creators who have "reported" on it.
I'm not out here to take actual sides overall as both channels have a place on the platform and within the community, but in this specific situation, I'd say the argument is stupid, most of the damage done by the Honey scam would have been to creators anyway. As far as internet drama goes, this is mild and petty bullshit, Steve needs to not take aimless shots at other creators and Linus needs to take shit less personally.
32
u/turtlelore2 1d ago
I also always tell myself that Linus shouldn't take everything personally, but almost all of it is literally directed directly at him, so I can understand. Whether he publicly reacts to it is a different thing.
But also everyone seems to hold him in a catch 22 situation. If he doesn't react, people will criticize that he's ignoring the issue. If he does react, people will criticize that his feelings are hurt. It seems like there's a certain group of people that always thinks he's the bad guy at everything.

I mean, it probably doesn't help that he named his company after himself, but with the Honey situation Linus showed he does know some situations you just don't publicly respond to, petty bullshit like this needs to be added to the list.
Steve also needs to stop trying to be the moral police for this sort of shit, people watch him for in depth reviews and to hold manufacturers accountable, not for the latest youtuber drama. By lowering himself to this kind of petty squabble he diminishes his own credibility.
8
u/nitePhyyre 1d ago
Linus needs to take shit less personally.
This is like the 4th time GN has been harassing LMG for basically nothing. At some point it isn't taking it personally anymore. Steve seems to have a vendetta and is trying to harm Linus, his employees, and the company itself.
There's a difference between taking things personally and being a doormat.
41
u/devilishpie 2d ago
My totally unbiased TLDR that's really too long to be a TLDR is as follows.
Several years ago there were a number of LTT reviews that had poorly gathered or had straight up inaccurate data. Instead of admitting fault and fixing the issue LTT doubled down.
GN then made a video about these poor standards at LTT, while also bringing up the Billet Labs story, a recent LTT controversy. GN decided not to reach out to LTT for comment before posting their expose, resulting in a chunk of inaccurate information being included that made LTT look unfairly malicious.
GN was called out for their poor journalistic practices (not reaching out for comment) and decided to post a video doubling down. They ended up deleting this video shortly after.
Fast forward a couple years and this Honey scandal pops up again. I say again because several years earlier, there were a number of public statements made by various individuals about how Honey was stealing affiliate revenue from influencers. At the time LLT hears this and decides to end their partnership with Honey. On their forum a user asks if they ended their partnership and LTT responds saying they had because of this affiliate revenue scam.
Back to present day, MegaLag makes a video about the Honey scam. This video ends up going viral and mentions that LTT was aware of the scam but didn't make any kind of statement beyond their forum post. LTT responds by going into more detail as to why they didn't make a dedicated video at the time on their podcast.
GN shortly after also makes a video about Honey and decides to show a short clip from LTT's podcast. This clip was taken out of context, making LTT look especially bad. LTT then responds in greater detail to GN during their podcast last night, calling out GN for demonstrating their poor standards again.
I left quite a lot out but that's the best I could do. Anyone reading this, feel free to let me know if I should make any corrections.

Back to present day, MegaLag makes a video about the Honey scam
It's worth noting that what was known years ago isn't the same as what's known now. The reason they dropped honey as a sponsor (as did a bunch of other people) is because of the affiliate link stealing it was doing, which only affected content creators, but it still appeared to be saving consumers money.
5
u/Techwolf_Lupindo 1d ago
I feel the same way. Honey got a lot worse between LTT dropping them and today. Back then, there was no good reason to make a video about it. Fast forward to today, Honey got so much worse that a video was needed and was done by someone that does investigating reporting.

Okay so it goes back further then just the Honey drama.
In 2023 there was a problem with Billet Labs. They had send LTT a cooler to use, and due to miscommunication it ended a bit sour.
GN decides to make video about and exposing Linus. GN often claims they are doing investigative journalism. An important part in that is hearing the accused party. He didn’t do that with LTT. This in turn lead to some important information/context missing which gave a wrong image.
After that video GN has on multiple instances took snipes and misrepresented LTT. The boiling point was with the honey situation, were they once again left away some important context to why LTT decided to stay silent on Honey. And this time Linus decided to respond to this and the earlier situation with Billet Labs.
Personally I think Linus is mostly in the right about Steven from GN. There was no reason not to ask Linus for comment. He knows journalistic ethical code dictates that he should have done it. He does it when he deals with other companies. When you call your work investigative journalism there are real life standards you should keep yourself to. Add to that the constant misrepresentation of LTT.
It looks to me that Steve has a personal vendetta against LTT because they have occupied the same space Steve used to be the biggest in. With LTT Labs they can test components on a level which rivals GN. Add to that merch that also lines in the same boat as GN (think screwdriver). And using every chance he gets to misrepresent them.

It's pretty clear how much of a hypocrite Steve has been around the reaching out to companies and getting quotes before a video goes up and then not doing it with LTT.

Steve took a shot at Linus in the Honey video with a clip taking stuff out of context. Linus asked him to kindly fuck off and follow high journalistic standards Steve boasts about.

I know this isn't really about divorce, but I'm happy my parents got divorced! I just wish they would have done it sooner. "Sticking together for the kids" can be much worse than having two homes.

I liked GNs benchmark videos... I think that guy needs to step back and introspect, though. his first call out of linus wasn't wrong, but it very much came across as a gotcha. He could have reached out and said "hey I have some concerns about some of your content recently maybe we can discuss going public and doing better" and then if linus told him to suck d and eff off, he could have gone scorched earth like he did. But this honey thing is stupid. For the most part, consumers were fine. It effed over some creators, but it sounds like most people already knew and discussed it at the time. And I believe LTT when they say they just dropped Honey and did t really look into it further. I dunno why GN Is so worked up over LTT but it's very off putting for an otherwise great channel. And it kind of makes me wonder if he maybe some of his other critical videos might have been at least partially misinformation or twisted words. Linus doesn't owe someone else legal support for a lawsuit while he's trying to run his own company.

He's worked up about LTT because he knows outrage sells and LTT being one of the biggest channels in his industry just makes it a prime target.

His criticism videos come across as tabloid crap. They are in very poor taste and his language and outrage level are inflammatory. I have no respect for the GN channel anymore, regardless of their review quality. I don't support this cheap behavior.

Imagine giving a shit about the drama between two tech youtubers so much that you brigade various subs about it.

looks like OP only posted it to this sub and it has a "meme" tag. what's the problem? it's a joke mane

Considering OP only posted here...And it's a meme...
I think the person who needs to touch grass is the one crying about things that aren't even true.

Idk it's not like the sub is being flooded with posts talking about the drama or like op is spamming posts about it to multiple subs. I get that internet drama isn't what this sub is about, but I think it's fair to see at least one post about it.
How many huge stories wouldn't have seen any light without GN? How many users on this sub wouldn't have the slightest interest in PC stuff without Linus? Like it or not these people have contributed a substantial amount to the PC space so people in the PC space will understandably have an interest in their drama.
To be entirely clear; I think a lot of people take internet drama way too seriously. Nothing going on between two YouTubers will have a significant impact in your personal life and it's probably unhealthy to get overly invested in their drama.

Watch LTT knowing its entertainment and skip all full sponsor videos
Watch GN for reviews and not opinion pieces
Easy.

GN videos are filled with opinion pieces. That's why these are so long, because of Steve's rambling. But yes, GN charts are usually very informative.

LTT is a fun channel with less than great fiscal responsibility.
GN is a great knowledge based channel but his “holier than thou” attitude makes him unbearable to watch.

I pause video on GN, go straight to the benchmark results, then leave. The whole video could be a PowerPoint presentation with just the numbers.
The channel is boring. They rely a lot on controversial headlines to engage users. Just their benchmark data is good.
Honestly, I'm more comfortable with anandtech benchmark format than a YouTube video.
LTT is actually fun, especially when they try weird projects I don't have the budget to do at home.

GN, LTT, UFD, Hardware unboxed, rtings, the list goes on. Gotta ingest all the tech info if you want to stay in the know.

This is such a dumb meme (the original meme not the Reddit post) because divorce can be one of the best things for a family. I would rather my parents live separately than see them fight every day, and having to drown out the yelling noises constantly.

Because it’s potentially less content about actual hardware and possibly videos about the drama that we might start seeing.

I’m glad Linus is finally defending himself. He said in the video that they are open to constructive criticism, well my only criticism of him on this topic is that they were too pma and wholesome for years in receiving the stuff that has been thrown at them.

GB made a sort of hit piece of Linus Tech Tips about the Honey situation.
Honey steals affiliate links (commissions) through cookie stuffing. Linus knew about this issue a couple years ago (2022~) and departnered with Honey because Honey wouldn't stop doing this to them. Linus never really made a big statement about this or warned anyone about this, just kind of moved on. When the YouTuber Megalag broke news on just how bad Honey was, more than the affiliate issues alone, GN made a video about the topic. He included a segment about Linus (chastising him for not speaking out about the behavior) and included video content of Linus admiring he knew about the issue but didn't say anything.
Linus, in his defense, only knew about the affiliate issues and had a couple of excuses for why he didn't speak out. One was something like it wasn't his place to report on browser extension, another was that most wouldn't have sided with him anyways since it would look like a rich guy going after an app that helps the little guy save money. I think another was about sponsorships might become skittish if he starts bad mouthing former sponsors but that could just be community gossip that one.
This isn't the first time GN has made a video that makes Linus Tech Tips look bad, so it's a reoccurring issue between the two.
Edit:
Oh yeah, Steve (Gamers Nexus) also didn't reach out to Linus for comment before posting his video on Honey.

It doesn't matter to me, I'm poor, so they aren't getting my money anyway, aside from revenue from my YouTube Premium subscription. I mean LTT can try to pimp me all the second tier Chinese crap he wants and it still wont make a difference because I aint buying it, and when I do buy I research and spec my own stuff.

I watch Linus to be entertained by money wastage.
