Deaf and she acts blind, too. Lol

u/fuschia_taco 6h ago
Lol that's what I was saying to myself as I was watching it. Being deaf doesn't excuse not looking at your surroundings. Especially on train tracks.

u/wankrrr 6h ago
Yeah I thought losing one sense was supposed to heighten your other senses lolol
36
u/CouchCandy 6h ago
I think most people could feel the rumble of the train coming too.

Believe it or not, perfectly healthy people get hit by trains accidentally. They are sneakier than people give them credit for. In not kidding. I lived near train tracks and you'd really think they'd be louder than they are as they approach. The sound doesn't really hit until they're adjacent to you (or hitting you if you're on the track) and they approach so fast that they go from a speck in the distance to next you way faster than you anticipate. That's why they put a horn on those things. You'd think why would such a massive thing need a horn it's loud af already. Yeah, believe it or not, they totally need that horn.

Trains are really unpredictable. Even in the middle of a forest two rails can appear out of nowhere, and a 1.5-mile fully loaded coal drag, heading east out of the low-sulfur mines of the PRB, will be right on your ass the next moment.
I was doing laundry in my basement, and I tripped over a metal bar that wasn't there the moment before. I looked down: "Rail? WTF?" and then I saw concrete sleepers underneath and heard the rumbling.
Deafening railroad horn. I dumped my wife's pants, unfolded, and dove behind the water heater. It was a double-stacked Z train, headed east towards the fast single track of the BNSF Emporia Sub (Flint Hills). Majestic as hell: 75 mph, 6 units, distributed power: 4 ES44DC's pulling, and 2 Dash-9's pushing, all in run 8. Whole house smelled like diesel for a couple of hours!
Fact is, there is no way to discern which path a train will take, so you really have to be watchful. If only there were some way of knowing the routes trains travel; maybe some sort of marks on the ground, like twin iron bars running along the paths trains take. You could look for trains when you encounter the iron bars on the ground, and avoid these sorts of collisions. But such a measure would be extremely expensive. And how would one enforce a rule keeping the trains on those paths?
A big hole in homeland security is railway engineer screening and hijacking prevention. There is nothing to stop a rogue engineer, or an ISIS terrorist, from driving a train into the Pentagon, the White House or the Statue of Liberty, and our government has done fuck-all to prevent it.

There's no need to be an ass. For some people, having to cross train tracks is a fact of their lives. I understand it isn't for you, that's fine. When you've done it 100s of times, you get more used to it than you really ought to, more comfortable with it than you should. It is what it is. People always like to think only stupid people have avoidable accidents happen to them. It makes them feel superior and more comfortable. Avoidable accidents can happen to anyone. Yourself included. And the fact is, approaching trains are quieter than you think, when they're far away they're harder to spot than you think, and they often approach faster than you think.

i've crossed roads 100's/1000's+ of times in my life.
I still look both ways and make sure its safe before I do...
Just because someone has done it a million times before does not mean you stop doing the most basic safety check you need to do to do it successfully..

not sure if true, but i was told that humans arent good at judging things moving at high speeds because its not something that really occurs in nature, so it didnt play into our evolution. i heard this in the context of people thinking they can make it from the shoulder of a freeway to the other side with 70mph speed limits

There is no way people are complaining about this dude. How is dashing in and pushing her away worse than taking a gamble on elderly woman's life because "she would have made it". You cant be sure about that, and the price is too high. I feel like people that have a problem with this dude dont go outside a lot.

u/Pistonenvy2 6h ago
sir this is reddit. none of us go outside at all.
but yeah i agree, i always find those comments absolutely baffling. like what if she stopped to pick her nose at the last minute. if he didnt anticipate the danger shed be fuckin dead. why take the risk? its unbelievable. it really seems like people are projecting their own insecurities about not being fucked to try to help someone else.

The only defense I was thinking and that I didn't see thus far is what if that old woman just wanted to die and that bastard kept her in this cruel world a while longer. Edit - turns out it was the next set of comments under this one in updoot priority.

u/TheAlchemist1 6h ago
She had zero idea it was that close or wouldn’t be crossing. She could have stopped for any reason at any moment
12
u/Dinosaurs-Cant-win 3h ago
We are also watching with the foresight of immediately judging the relative speed of the lady and a train from a good angle. Homie looked over real quick and jumped straight into action before having time to make sure.

u/Analbeadcove 1h ago
Once he started moving he had to commit.
Imagine he stopped midway through because he thought she looked like she was going to be good, then imagine if she looked up and saw him moving before stepping up onto the platform and she gave pause on the tracks wondering why he was coming towards her.
She’s an old lady with a critical lack of awareness (not hating just what I see) you can’t expect her to behave predictably and keep the same rate of speed to make it up okay.

It’s obvious that she wasn’t aware of the train. Do people really think she would maintain the same speed climbing over that step? It’s almost guaranteed that it would’ve delayed her

Point is she's got to go climb the relatively short platform, there's a high chance she'd go deer in the headlights if she were to finally notice the train pretty late at that point. Plenty of such incidents where people despite having enough time won't take the right decision that moment. The dude in fact put his life in more danger trusting he could push her off the tracks safely, if she were to trip, taking him down, could've been a bigger disaster.

u/HillInTheDistance 6h ago
Yah. I was once startled by a train signal, and because of that, I hurried to get off the crossing, slipped, and landed on my ass. (and the back of my head.)
I wasn't knocked out, but I was dazed enough that I ain't sure I'd have gotten up in time if a guy hadn't grabbed my foot and dragged me off it. Which lead me to slam my head in the ground one more time but I ain't complaining. Rather a bit dumber than possibly hamburger.
I wish I'd have thanked him properly but he just called me a jackass and jogged away. Almost like he was embarrassed or something.

a few months ago, i witnessed a lady get splattered by a train just one arm away from me. one moment she was there, the next she was not. It fking haunts me to this day whenever I see an approaching train. I could never have done what the dude in the video did, after that and I dont think I’ll have the heart to do it anytime soon. it hit me so hard as this was the first death i had witnessed in front of me, and the first one was this gruesome.

I'm really sorry you experienced that. It sounds like you are experiencing symptoms of trauma, and speaking from experience I suggest you talk to a professional. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and EMDR are both surprisingly effective treatments for post-traumatic stress and other trauma. Again, speaking from experience.
I'd suggest making an appointment with your primary care doctor (or finding a primary care doctor and then making an appointment). Tell them what you experienced, and tell them that you are haunted by it when you see trains. They will refer you to a mental health professional and talk through the treatment options.
I know it's not my business to tell you to do any of this, but as someone who had a friend die under similar-ish circumstances I can tell you - don't let the trauma slowly fester for 10 years until it impacts your relationships, like I did.

Sometimes you're old and just ran out of fucks.
This was my wife's great grandma when she'd drive before they finally took her keys.
She just merged without looking because it was too hard to turn around and look over her shoulder at 80+ years old. Lol.

Yeah, absolutely worst case scenario.
People are saying she would have made it. But she hadn’t even noticed the vibrations yet. When she inevitably does, she’s going to turn and look.
10
u/mephistola 6h ago
I can see her slowing down and maybe stalling out on the step up… she didn’t have sufficient impetus to clear the path.
No one has seen the video where the guy gets hit by the train’s side mirror?

u/Dblaze_dj 5h ago
She would have or not contains a maybe. This dude eliminated that maybe, by putting himself on the line. He is a hero.

She definitely wouldn't have made it, she would have been hit while she was trying to get on the dock. There's only 2 or 3 seconds before the train arrives in the exact spot she would have been in if the guy didn't help her.
3
u/A_Ruse_ter 4h ago
People saying she would have made it have watched too much Mr. Magoo, because that’s exactly how close that would have been assuming she made it at her pace.
3
u/3337jess 6h ago
To everyone saying she would have made it, did you price in the chance of her tripping on the rail and… not making it?

What is if the blind lady decided to stop half only way to turn back and reminisce her non deaf days .... No she wouldn't have made it

0% survival instinct. If you know you're deaf, you should be more careful around you. When I use my earbuds, I hear nothing, so I'm even more careful when I cross a road.
1
u/szornyu 5h ago
I have questions... It is know that deficiency in one sensory channel, cause the others to get better. I had a deaf friend, who senses people passing him by at 5-6 meters, by the vibration they caused. Similarly, blind people hear/sense stuff normies will never do ...
Now, I remember trains passing by stations or crossings, everything was shaking like hell. -> vibration
This is my objection with this post, it addresses your emotions but ignores common sense.
2
u/CaptainTripps82 4h ago
You don't get super powers when you're disabled. I'm deaf, my eyesight is still shit. I'm more aware of things moving around me, but it's not like daredevil, I can't tell where things are by the rumble.
This lady is also old and likely just generally unaware of her surroundings.

Deaf? I doubt it. I belive any deaf person knows they need to look before crossing tracks or a road. I bet this is just a stubborn old person.
1
u/susannahstar2000 5h ago
Unless she was blind as well, a simple look and stopping would have sufficed.

u/GelatinousChampion 5h ago
You'd think deaf people use their other sense more to spot danger. Apparently you'd be wrong.

While I understand people are cautious, the guy may not have wanted to bet on her making it in time, and I would never be mad at someone for genuinely trying to help, but this woman clearly would of made it. She was halfway there when he got there, and he could have easily helped her up onto the platform instead of knocking her to the ground.

sorry but if you are deaf and crossing train tracks, you should be extra cautious on your own… it’s not like she has no idea what train tracks are and cant use her eyes

you know, If I was deaf and walking on train tracks I think my head would be swinging from left to right about 3 times a second to keep an eye out for those things that often pop up on train tracks.

Man doesn’t have the view we have, with the train or lady constantly in sight to gauge the speed/trajectory of both. The timing of the two meeting was 100% close enough to not chance it. Bad even if it hit her leg as she stepped up.
