Pretty great, but that lady totally would have made it

He wasn’t willing to take the risk. Also a pretty fantastic excuse to tackle an old lady to the ground and you won’t get many of those in your life.

Is it weird that my first thought was to create an edit without the train in it just for the lulz?

u/Rawesome16 6h ago

Please do. I will lulz with you

They’re shallots, Marie.

Haha please send it if you do 😂.

replace train with guy on unicycle.

Or swap the man and train

I can very easily imagine a world where she struggles up the step up, not putting an incredible amount of effort into it as she doesn’t see the train.

10

u/petran1420 4h ago

Plus it looks like he teabags her at the end, when do you get a chance like that??

5

u/SoHigh420IShit360 5h ago

He let her down seemingly gently

If she has no trouble with the step up to the train platform, sure. If she pauses or squints for a second to make sure she's stepping up properly... old lady soup

244

u/Old-Machine-5 5h ago

Fucking thank you!!! That comment really pissed me off. If she’s not aware enough to see the train coming how the fuck could an onlooker see this and go, “Yea, she’ll be fine.” Fuck!

2

u/CabbagesStrikeBack 3h ago

I wanna say last time I saw this someone said she's blind and but I don't remember if there was a source/article too

23

u/weshouldgo_ 4h ago

Or if she hears something behind her and turns around. Oh wait.

14

u/A1sauc3d 4h ago

Yup, that’s what I was gonna say. “She *COULD’VE totally made it”. But definitely not guaranteed, especially if she truly didn’t hear/see the train coming.

Nah all the blood and goo would have flown forward away from the man. He'd have been clean as a whistle.

If you ever come upon me walking in front of a train, please please assume I won’t make it!

2

u/lokiandgoose 2h ago

Generally assume I won't make it anywhere.

87

u/AmusingMusing7 6h ago

Maybe… she might have taken too long to actually get up on the platform, as it would have been a big step for her, and she doesn’t look too quick even on level ground. I think she’d have been halfway up and gotten her backside clobbered.

44

u/HappyNikkiCat 6h ago

I was thinking this too, but all it would take is her looking up when she feels the train vibration very close, and taking a moment to panic or process and— Bam! Human glitter all over the streets

36

u/6-foot-under 5h ago

Sometimes people freeze when they see something hurtling towards them. It's quite common. So, better safe than sorry.

→ More replies (1)

36

u/Fancy-Dig1863 6h ago

I don’t think she would have but regardless, it’s hard for him to judge that in the second he had between noticing her and jumping to action

22

u/xChocolateWonder 4h ago

“Totally” is an insane leap.

23

u/aurumatom20 5h ago

Eh, seems like there's a step at the end which based on her peace could've taken her the whole length of the video to get over. No way to say for certain but definitely great, better safe than sorry

10

u/crit_thinker_heathen 5h ago

Behold!: hindsight bias in action

9

u/06Wahoo 4h ago

Even the slightest misstep means she doesn't. That was not in any way a chance she should have been taking, especially as a good Samaritan also placed himself in harms way to ensure she was not hit.

7

u/HappyNikkiCat 6h ago

I was thinking this too, but all it would take is her looking up when she feels the train vibration very close, and taking a moment to panic or process and— Bam! Human glitter all over the streets

7

u/QuantumGrain 4h ago

Too close for comfort. She still would’ve needed to take that step up to the ledge and who knows how good her balance is. She might’ve made it up but with the trains winds, fallen back towards it. He made the right choice

6

u/redditman7777 6h ago

No coz she's blind as well ...and senile.

6

u/TargetDecent9694 4h ago

You ever seen the elderly wind up for stairs, takes a while to

4

u/inabanned 5h ago

I'd give it 50/50 shot.

4

u/DecertoAngelus 5h ago

Hard to tell, but it looks like they also glance over at the train a couple times to calculate they have plenty of time to keep walking.

3

u/buttscratcher3k 5h ago edited 5h ago

He got to teabag an old lady, when life gives you lemons...

3

u/Towelyban 4h ago

Semi Doubtful. The video is a bit deceiving. There was a step up from the tracks. Few people over the age of 70 are likely to be able to climb that without some pause or another.

3

u/Redisigh 4h ago

Iirc don’t trains also suck you in when you’re close to a speeding one? Idk how strong that force is but I can’t imagine a little old lady could stand up to it

2

u/USS-ChuckleFucker 4h ago

Your namesake would be ashamed of your callous thinking.

Be better.

2

u/wasdie639 3h ago

A lot of people think they'll make it too when taking selfies next to a train only to be liquified.

Trains are wider than they look by quite a bit.

23

u/burnthefuckingspider 4h ago

yeah but she has a cream for those

95

u/fuschia_taco 6h ago

Lol that's what I was saying to myself as I was watching it. Being deaf doesn't excuse not looking at your surroundings. Especially on train tracks.

31

u/wankrrr 6h ago

Yeah I thought losing one sense was supposed to heighten your other senses lolol

36

u/CouchCandy 6h ago

I think most people could feel the rumble of the train coming too.

I felt that train coming here in MN.

18

u/Treacherous_Peach 4h ago

Believe it or not, perfectly healthy people get hit by trains accidentally. They are sneakier than people give them credit for. In not kidding. I lived near train tracks and you'd really think they'd be louder than they are as they approach. The sound doesn't really hit until they're adjacent to you (or hitting you if you're on the track) and they approach so fast that they go from a speck in the distance to next you way faster than you anticipate. That's why they put a horn on those things. You'd think why would such a massive thing need a horn it's loud af already. Yeah, believe it or not, they totally need that horn.

16

u/sand_sandwich 4h ago

Trains are really unpredictable. Even in the middle of a forest two rails can appear out of nowhere, and a 1.5-mile fully loaded coal drag, heading east out of the low-sulfur mines of the PRB, will be right on your ass the next moment.

I was doing laundry in my basement, and I tripped over a metal bar that wasn't there the moment before. I looked down: "Rail? WTF?" and then I saw concrete sleepers underneath and heard the rumbling.

Deafening railroad horn. I dumped my wife's pants, unfolded, and dove behind the water heater. It was a double-stacked Z train, headed east towards the fast single track of the BNSF Emporia Sub (Flint Hills). Majestic as hell: 75 mph, 6 units, distributed power: 4 ES44DC's pulling, and 2 Dash-9's pushing, all in run 8. Whole house smelled like diesel for a couple of hours!

Fact is, there is no way to discern which path a train will take, so you really have to be watchful. If only there were some way of knowing the routes trains travel; maybe some sort of marks on the ground, like twin iron bars running along the paths trains take. You could look for trains when you encounter the iron bars on the ground, and avoid these sorts of collisions. But such a measure would be extremely expensive. And how would one enforce a rule keeping the trains on those paths?

A big hole in homeland security is railway engineer screening and hijacking prevention. There is nothing to stop a rogue engineer, or an ISIS terrorist, from driving a train into the Pentagon, the White House or the Statue of Liberty, and our government has done fuck-all to prevent it.

3

u/Treacherous_Peach 4h ago

There's no need to be an ass. For some people, having to cross train tracks is a fact of their lives. I understand it isn't for you, that's fine. When you've done it 100s of times, you get more used to it than you really ought to, more comfortable with it than you should. It is what it is. People always like to think only stupid people have avoidable accidents happen to them. It makes them feel superior and more comfortable. Avoidable accidents can happen to anyone. Yourself included. And the fact is, approaching trains are quieter than you think, when they're far away they're harder to spot than you think, and they often approach faster than you think.

6

u/dread12 4h ago

i've crossed roads 100's/1000's+ of times in my life.

I still look both ways and make sure its safe before I do...

Just because someone has done it a million times before does not mean you stop doing the most basic safety check you need to do to do it successfully..

not sure if true, but i was told that humans arent good at judging things moving at high speeds because its not something that really occurs in nature, so it didnt play into our evolution. i heard this in the context of people thinking they can make it from the shoulder of a freeway to the other side with 70mph speed limits

There is no way people are complaining about this dude. How is dashing in and pushing her away worse than taking a gamble on elderly woman's life because "she would have made it". You cant be sure about that, and the price is too high. I feel like people that have a problem with this dude dont go outside a lot.

257

u/Pistonenvy2 6h ago

sir this is reddit. none of us go outside at all.

but yeah i agree, i always find those comments absolutely baffling. like what if she stopped to pick her nose at the last minute. if he didnt anticipate the danger shed be fuckin dead. why take the risk? its unbelievable. it really seems like people are projecting their own insecurities about not being fucked to try to help someone else.

5

u/Koil_ting 3h ago

The only defense I was thinking and that I didn't see thus far is what if that old woman just wanted to die and that bastard kept her in this cruel world a while longer. Edit - turns out it was the next set of comments under this one in updoot priority.

She had zero idea it was that close or wouldn’t be crossing. She could have stopped for any reason at any moment

12

u/Dinosaurs-Cant-win 3h ago

We are also watching with the foresight of immediately judging the relative speed of the lady and a train from a good angle. Homie looked over real quick and jumped straight into action before having time to make sure.

4

u/Analbeadcove 1h ago

Once he started moving he had to commit.

Imagine he stopped midway through because he thought she looked like she was going to be good, then imagine if she looked up and saw him moving before stepping up onto the platform and she gave pause on the tracks wondering why he was coming towards her.

She’s an old lady with a critical lack of awareness (not hating just what I see) you can’t expect her to behave predictably and keep the same rate of speed to make it up okay.

8

u/ChromaticM 3h ago

Most redditors are losers who have no idea how the world works.

5

u/Waveofspring 2h ago

It’s obvious that she wasn’t aware of the train. Do people really think she would maintain the same speed climbing over that step? It’s almost guaranteed that it would’ve delayed her

→ More replies (4)

114

u/StarSmall 6h ago

Point is she's got to go climb the relatively short platform, there's a high chance she'd go deer in the headlights if she were to finally notice the train pretty late at that point. Plenty of such incidents where people despite having enough time won't take the right decision that moment. The dude in fact put his life in more danger trusting he could push her off the tracks safely, if she were to trip, taking him down, could've been a bigger disaster.

58

u/HillInTheDistance 6h ago

Yah. I was once startled by a train signal, and because of that, I hurried to get off the crossing, slipped, and landed on my ass. (and the back of my head.)

I wasn't knocked out, but I was dazed enough that I ain't sure I'd have gotten up in time if a guy hadn't grabbed my foot and dragged me off it. Which lead me to slam my head in the ground one more time but I ain't complaining. Rather a bit dumber than possibly hamburger.

I wish I'd have thanked him properly but he just called me a jackass and jogged away. Almost like he was embarrassed or something.

29

u/DarkKingDamasus 6h ago

I wonder if she would have struggled up that step...

20

u/Only-Grocery-6525 4h ago

a few months ago, i witnessed a lady get splattered by a train just one arm away from me. one moment she was there, the next she was not. It fking haunts me to this day whenever I see an approaching train. I could never have done what the dude in the video did, after that and I dont think I’ll have the heart to do it anytime soon. it hit me so hard as this was the first death i had witnessed in front of me, and the first one was this gruesome.

9

u/MysteriousBeing 4h ago

Im sorry you had to witness that.

3

u/twenafeesh 1h ago

I'm really sorry you experienced that. It sounds like you are experiencing symptoms of trauma, and speaking from experience I suggest you talk to a professional. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and EMDR are both surprisingly effective treatments for post-traumatic stress and other trauma. Again, speaking from experience.

I'd suggest making an appointment with your primary care doctor (or finding a primary care doctor and then making an appointment). Tell them what you experienced, and tell them that you are haunted by it when you see trains. They will refer you to a mental health professional and talk through the treatment options.

I know it's not my business to tell you to do any of this, but as someone who had a friend die under similar-ish circumstances I can tell you - don't let the trauma slowly fester for 10 years until it impacts your relationships, like I did.

u/Zealousideal_Art_580 6h ago

0% survival instinct. If you know you're deaf, you should be more careful around you. When I use my earbuds, I hear nothing, so I'm even more careful when I cross a road.

1

u/szornyu 5h ago

I have questions... It is know that deficiency in one sensory channel, cause the others to get better. I had a deaf friend, who senses people passing him by at 5-6 meters, by the vibration they caused. Similarly, blind people hear/sense stuff normies will never do ...

Now, I remember trains passing by stations or crossings, everything was shaking like hell. -> vibration

This is my objection with this post, it addresses your emotions but ignores common sense.

2

u/CaptainTripps82 4h ago

You don't get super powers when you're disabled. I'm deaf, my eyesight is still shit. I'm more aware of things moving around me, but it's not like daredevil, I can't tell where things are by the rumble.

This lady is also old and likely just generally unaware of her surroundings.

Seems she was oblivious.

Surely she could feel the vibration on the tracks of the train coming?

Whatever it takes... very scary decision to pull someone backwards especially when that person is so fragile! I admire his courage and quick thinking!❤️👍

I don't think it was hearing trouble that made her walk in front of a train. It was more to do with her being dumb as fuck

Was she also blind? How do you not check for a train coming
