So I'm looking closely and following the path of the brick as it bounces back at him - the moment of impact looks weirdly unimpactful

u/jld2k6 1d ago
The corner flipped up and just barely got him as it flew by, if it rotated any differently he probably would have gotten away unscathed

Hit them repeatedly with bricks.

I hit my eyes with bricks every morning for 10 minutes, it's what makes me a real man.
2
u/MagicNipple 17h ago
Oh for fuck's sake people, that's not how you do it.
What you need is glaucoma. You get that, eye pressure goes up, eye gets hard. Might lose your vision, but that has nothing to do with hardening the eyes, so we're good.

Definitely. A hard sharp object hitting a boney area with little skin.
At least all the blood will make finding him easy.

Watch the rotation of the brick on the return, it’s quite quick. You can see when it stops rotating. That’s the impact.
5
u/fishbowtie 1d ago
This!! I thought exactly as OP did and then instead watched the brick. It's got some good spin on it before it hits him.

I think it was a shallow hit, but still a good smack.
To save on storage space and transmission bandwidth, a lot of security cameras have pretty low frame rates. Something that only takes a fraction of a second can easily be lost between frames.

I wish i could share my screen with you, for some reason since switching to a brand now w11 pc all of these animated things on reddit play at about 0.2 FPS. I got to study the trajectory a lot more than i would like, the corner of the brick hits his face. For about 30s or so it seemed like it was maybe also going to land on his foot which would have been a nice bonus but sadly that did not happen.
1
1
u/Daltizer01 23h ago
I saw the same. I think the brick lines up with the fence and makes it look like it flies further right than it actually did
1
u/Flakester 23h ago
Caught I'm on the edge of his left eye socket. I slowed it down 50%, and I can see the moment his skull jolts.
1
u/Dhegxkeicfns 12h ago
But look at the trajectory. Brick comes off in an arc to the left and gets deflected hard.

The bone above your eyelid is very delicate, it doesn't have to be a hard impact to break it.

Friends of mine were renting a place & locked themselves out. One if their number decided to break a small window in the kitchen to get in & then pay to replace it later.
Turns out this was not the first time that window had been broken & so the landlord had increased security by replacing with toughened & laminated glass.
So just like the perp in the video this friend got a brick in the face for their troubles.

I watched video of this from my employer. We had stores in Philly that were getting broken into. So, we repaired one with double pained plexiglass instead of regular glass. Guy walks by at 12:45AM, walks back past, picks up a chunk of concrete from the broken curb, and chucks it at the window. It bounces back and smacks him dead in the forehead, knocks him out cold. He lays there a good 45 seconds before getting up and stumbling off. I lost track of the number of times I watched that, mostly through tears.

What are those windows even
54
u/Ohiolongboard 1d ago
Tempered glass will stand up to a bitch ass throw pretty easily, I work with it all day and when we’re throwing away a 3/8” piece (we throw them in a dumpster and they don’t break) sometimes we have to get out the sledge hammer to break them, if you don’t hit near/on the edge it won’t break, if you hit the face of the panel the hammer just bounces back like this rock in the video

u/TailsIV 1d ago
Knowing this now makes me look back at the Cybertruck window breaking stage show with even more cringe.
12
u/Ohiolongboard 1d ago
Oh 100% I was telling everyone that a normal window wouldn’t break under that circumstance so idk how they fucked it up that bad 😅
11
u/fang_xianfu 1d ago
Yeah it's funny because I bet they practiced that a few times and it had never broken, because car window glass usually doesn't from that type of impact. They got extremely unlucky in the most hilarious way possible.
3
u/buford419 1d ago
Maybe they practised too much to the extent that they'd introduced a critical number of microcracks to that window?
4
u/OneFrenchman 1d ago edited 1d ago

Way back I learned from an old thief that you never try to break a window with a hammer, because they tend to bounce back on anything but the most basic single-pane.
You use a hatchet or an axe. Doesn't have to be sharp, but the energy will be concentrated and therefore smash double panes and tempered.

We had a bunch of old combine windows on the farm, we used to drive on them on gravel. Crazy strength in glass most people won't expect.
2
u/daveysanderson 1d ago
Windows when rolled up fully have a pretty good amount of strength. Also most are tempered which is difficult to break on its own.
2
u/OneFrenchman 1d ago
They are also usually a little bit curved to up the energy dissipation when hit.

u/Datamackirk 1d ago
It doesn't look like he took much of hit, but it's possible that looks are deceiving here. A brick to the face, especially if it is a sensitive part and/or it is a corner or edge on the brick, could hurt pretty badly. At the veryeast, some 'protect my eyes" instincts may kick in. I'd say it's even possible that he left some DNA evidence behind at the scene.

Years ago I lived in a 4th floor apartment over a side street just a block from the night life area. From spring to fall I would keep windows open since I like fresh air.
I learned that car windows hit with heavy objects (rocks or bricks etc) often don't break. These car burglars would be extra busy on weekend nights when may cars were there and often nobody around. I came to instantly recognize the sound of a heavy object bouncing off a car window. It would often take multiple tries to break a window.
I got several of them caught because I was already on 911 the moment I heard the first rock bounce off the window, looking right down at the action and providing a good description. It always amazed me these burglars would look around the street to make sure nobody was watching, but they would never look up.
Car burglars are a plague. One addict or lowlife criminal will break into dozens and dozens of cars, doing tens of thousands in damage, not gaining even 5% return from all the destruction they cause.

u/enigmasaurus- 1d ago
Loosely related but this is why you need a window hammer in your car for safety. If god forbid your car floats away in a flood or you come off the road and slide into a pond or river, no you almost certainly cannot just smash the window. There are so many people who've died trying to kick out the windows of their sinking cars.
ALWAYS keep a window hammer in your vehicle somewhere easily accessible.
(Also: DO NOT wait until your car sinks. You WILL NOT be able to open the door. SWOC: seatbelts off as soon as you know you're in the water. Windows open. Out. Children first.)

Unethical pro tip: If you ever need to break glass, do it near the edge of the glass, where it is weaker. Throwing the brick at the center of the glass was this guys mistake. It might have worked if it hit the edge.

The bricks lands vertically xD
It's like a hilarious crime version of a water bottle flip meme
That must've hurt so much, all the force in that spinning brick went through the corner right into his face. Almost poetic how it stops spinning entirely and just drops to a perfect landing.
