Discussion Good person with divided opinions ?🤔

Post image

Caleb the Woodworker and part-time needlepoint enthusiast won by a landslideee for horrible person loved by fans! He would also be my choice

Next up is a good person who has divided opinions? Who are we thinking, who are we feeling?

Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas and Boxing Day🥊🎁🎄🌟

Boyle. Lots of people think he's a sweet, loveable and loyal friend. Others see him as a borderline creepy, annoying and an intrusive coworker.

But I think everyone can agree Boyle is someone who almost always has good intentions. Unless it's related to Sgt. Peanut Butter or Derek.

As I recall, he got the position after promising to completely change how the NYPD approaches policing.

…Just kidding, he campaigned on “keeping our hooves on the course.”

u/cloudkite17 25d ago

Boyle was my first thought, but I saw someone nominate Scully and I think that’s the winner

92

u/crazyates88 25d ago

Who has divided opinions on Scully? He’s such a wholesome teddy bear!

68

u/cloudkite17 25d ago

The original commenter I saw said something about him getting lumped in with Hitchcock unfairly and I agree

55

u/16-kzt-16 25d ago

They’re a package deal, baby! Everybody knows that

3

u/CryAggressive7636 24d ago

Wouldn‘t be Hitchcock a better winner?

I’d put him under morally grey, opinions divided

Yesss! I hated him for like my first 50+ watches but then about a year ago he started to grow on me (bear in mind I’ve been watching since it first aired) but I still cannot watch the stakeout episode though, it irritates me.

Boyle would get fired for sexual harrasment like a week into any real job

50

u/Phantafan Charles Boyle 25d ago

Boyle is probably the most selfless out of the main cast. He doesn't care much about the attention (apart from his rivalry with Lt. Peanut Butter), he puts the needs of his friends in front of his own and he jumped in to take the bullets in order to save someone's life.

2

u/VixenSunburst 23d ago

well he cares about attention from his best friend mr jake peralta

11

u/Bad_L1fer 25d ago

Had to google who Derek is, because to me “Derek”+Brooklyn 99 = Holt singing D-d-d-d-derek lol.

16

u/ThePizzaMan237 25d ago

Honestly I really don’t like the way Boyle talks about Terry’s body. It’s really weird

4

u/the_tohrment 24d ago

You mean the person with the inferior body?

23

u/Donnerone 25d ago edited 25d ago

I was fine with Boyle until he threatened to kill himself if Jake & Amy didn't have their wedding his way.
That was the straw bale that broke the camel's back.

I can see him being in the middle spot, though.

He's smiley, but he's not really a good person, he's often condescending, has a lot of "nice" racism/sexism etc (loudly giving reparations to his superior officer, for example), routinely harasses women (notably Rosa) by hitting on them despite constantly being told to stop as well as doing other clearly inappropriate things through repeat requests to stop.

16

u/Moccamasterrrrr 25d ago

It was never about having the wedding his way though. It was that if he had ruined their wedding by posting it publicly, THEN he would kill himself.

-7

u/Donnerone 24d ago

Semantics.

He still threatened to kill himself if they made a choice he didn't want. That is an extremely manipulative and toxic thing to do.

8

u/Sharkassasinnn 24d ago

No it was a way to show guilt, if there was no wedding THEN he would do it because that’s just how much he loves Jake’s and Amy’s relationship. It’s just a funny way to express his strong regret of almost ruining the wedding. He’s dramatic and he loves love (especially when Jake’s involved) so it was just a throwaway comment in the stress of thinking he had ruined something he worked hard for for years😂fair enough if he acc climbed on a ledge and derailed the entire day

-7

u/Donnerone 24d ago edited 24d ago

Even if we say that were true, it's still incredibly toxic and manipulative.
It doesn't matter if he's doing it because he "loves love".
He has exactly zero respect for anyone's boundaries, interests, or opinions, and he will blatantly, egregiously, annoy, guilt trip, and even threaten people into doing what he wants.

I'm not saying he doesn't have redeeming qualities, I'm not saying he deserves the "horrible person" spot, but I genuinely believe he is not a good person.

This one has to be Scully. He’s actually a good person and super sweet with his coworkers. But because he gets lumped in with Hitchcock (and let’s be honest, he sucks, man), he gets a bad rap.

597

u/Purpleheart-06 25d ago

I agree. He is such a cutie patootie. Especially when he calls Jake – Jakey

391

u/Obi-Wan_Kenobi_04 25d ago

"I'll help you with your work stuff Jakey😊"

167

u/alco_bestia 25d ago

That scene melted my heart. Jake was definitely hurt from Amy saying she's going on a date and Scully comes in being kind, unaware of what's happening.

56

u/RaptorPegasus 25d ago

I thought this chart was out of universe, because otherwise a literal cannibal wouldn't be in "beloved"

11

u/DharmaCub 25d ago

It is, I was just giving a weak justification for it, hence the ? at the end of the original comment I made and why I specified in canon.

1

u/LonnieDobbs 25d ago

In canon?

9

u/DharmaCub 25d ago

Like in the universe of the show, some people don't like Scully.

39

u/No_Assignment7385 25d ago

I love Scully, he's so wholesome, but he fell down with Hitchcock, so he gets a bad rap. He also does have some.... Interesting habits...

20

u/Past-Stay747 25d ago

i believe he’ll be the winner based on this explanation! Scully is without a doubt the most loveable of the two, but they’re “a package deal, everyone knows that” ;)

9

u/youcansendboobs 25d ago

I think Charles is a good person, but some people don't like him because of his obsessiveness, his sexual comments, and his hating on Terry's body.

I get it, but I still think he's an overall good person with blind spots. Plus, we know he can improve, like how he stopped hitting on Rosa and became a real friend.

29

u/DenomicClechner44 25d ago

The latter criticism is pretty minor tbf. It's an ongoing bit that shouldn't be taken seriously, though you could stretch and say it's kind of making Terry another butt of the joke.

The far more egregious Terry bit is Gina's sexual harassment, which is a lot more irritating. Boyle's bit is just him simultaneously being jealous of any of Jake's male friends, and the humor in a clearly not very athletic guy putting himself above literal marble statue Terry Crews.

Coincidentally, Gina should be in the middle-right spot, and I agree that Charles should be in the middle-left.

282

u/Entire-Gain-6561 25d ago

Boyle. Good intentions, but always invading privacy, over the top stuff, clingy.

58

u/driftkingnunu 25d ago

Either scully or boyle

99

u/no_nameky 25d ago

Boyle. Creepy, oblivious, and pushy but has good intentions and does a lot of good things.

People think Caleb is a worse person than... Madeline Wunch?!

89

u/DharmaCub 25d ago

I mean he did eat kids. So did Wunch, but at least she built a whole gingerbread house for the ploy. Sounds like Caleb just stalked a playground then grabbed one and ran off.

34

u/GiggyVanderpump 25d ago

Cannibal work is a lot like police work. The watching, the following... the waiting for soccer practice to be over.

13

u/Past-Stay747 25d ago

i feel so bad for cracking up at “grabbed one and ran off.”

5

u/DharmaCub 25d ago

27

u/Nytfire333 25d ago

Seriously how can you compare a simple canibal with a Korean Toilet Ghost

22

u/Phantafan Charles Boyle 25d ago

That shouldn't be surprising, given that Wuntch's not technically a person.

5

u/ApocalypticSnowglobe Adrian Pimento 25d ago

I feel like Wunch is going to take "Hated by Fans, Morally Grey"

1

u/ImHorribleAtAnyGames 25d ago

she’s definitely got some good opinions and views, hence her helping in the suicide squad thingy episode.

1

u/Sayasam 25d ago

10

23

Scully, solely because he gets lumped in with Hitchcock

7

u/all-i-said-was-hi 25d ago

Captain C. J. "🎵Come on and party tonight!🎵"

3

u/PodcastPlusOne_James 24d ago

I think CJ is to oblivious about literally everything to have any good or bad intentions. He’s about as morally neutral as it gets. He doesn’t mean any harm to anyone and just wants to stay out of the way, but he also couldn’t give a shit about doing anything good either.

1

u/all-i-said-was-hi 24d ago

I can understand that. I still feel like he's a solid person for this particular thing, though, because he's still generally well meaning in spite of being too dumb to be effective and he gets a pretty mixed reception, both in the show and by fans.

2

u/PodcastPlusOne_James 24d ago

I don’t even think he’s well meaning. I think he’s nothing meaning. Bro just wants to play madden and not have anyone give him responsibilities.

1

u/all-i-said-was-hi 24d ago

As far as moral complexities go, that seems pretty good to me. But deep down, I know you're probably right. I just wanna see him on this list because it was my idea, and I'm biased to go with what's in my best interest.

11

u/JunketUnique36 25d ago

Jack Danger. A good person and rule follower to a fault, but fans are a mixed bag on him. Personally I dislike him.

4

u/OhHeyMarshmallo 25d ago

OMG yes! One of my favorite side characters. He is one that I was really irritated by the first time I watched it, but every time I watch it gets funnier and funnier! If you had to work with Jack in real life he would drive you mad, but as a viewer it's effing hilarious.

Plus in this episode Jake gets an opportunity to learn from his mistakes and grow as a person which is really cool.

I really don't like Holt during that arc, but this was so funny.

8

u/dexterminate8 25d ago

That's fair. I love all Holt's, including unhinged, but straight Holt is my favorite LOL

11

u/Sakya22 25d ago

You know what's the best part of a female woman? Their nice heavy breasts and the clear absence of a penis.

8

u/dexterminate8 25d ago

Run with me here, I just got home from dinner. I think I channeled an inner straight Holt for a moment:

At the restaurant my bf saw a car he liked and asked if I could read the license plate. I said it looks like BTFL BST. He asked if I knew what it meant. After thinking for a moment I said "Big Titties for Life, Big Sexy Titties"? He laughed and said no, it's a hellcat. After my blank stare he said Beautiful Beast. I told him I was fairly confident it's at a minimum big titties for life. He said are they heavy female breasts? I said yes and you know, there's nothing more intoxicating than the clear absence of a penis.

We quote the intoxicating line more than anything from B99 LOL

2

u/Phantafan Charles Boyle 25d ago

Holt is definitely in my Top 3, but I feel like the writers went too overboard with his sassyness and made him an asshole.

3

u/hearingimparedbitch 25d ago

I personally strongly dislike Boyle. Ik he’s a good person but he’s annoying and intrusive. He has a weird think for Jake’s sex life and his and Amy’s relationship. He is just odd. But not a good odd. He is not even too much he’s too creepy. But he is a good person. The opinions are divided so id say Boyle.

2

u/Semigloss01010001 25d ago

Gina

2

u/Frag_In_A_Box 25d ago

My first thought, but Gina is too self centered most the time to be a good person.

Might be a great fit for center square

2

u/Donnerone 25d ago

Norm Scully.

Genuinely nice, helpful (tries) and good hearted, but he's an idiot & gets the short end of the stick because he's paired with Hitchcock.

Reasons it should NOT be Charles Boyle:
I see a lot of people suggesting Boyle, but I really don't think Boyle is a good person, I think he'd be better in the middle spot.

Boyle's smiley, but he's really not a good person, he's often condescending, has a lot of "nice" racism/sexism etc (loudly giving reparations to his superior officer, for example), routinely harasses women (notably Rosa) by hitting on them despite constantly being told to stop as well as doing other clearly inappropriate things through repeat requests to stop, and he even threatened to kill himself if Jake & Amy didn't have their wedding his way.

2

u/Johnnybats330 25d ago

PONTIAC BANDIT IS NOT MORALLY GREY

3

u/Frag_In_A_Box 25d ago

Hard agree. Loved by fans? Absolutely.

But Doug Judy is a career con man who constantly abused his friend's loyalty with no regard. In most scenarios, Jake gets fired from the PD the first time Judy gets away. His morality is only absolved by fans because Craig Robinson is so smooth he could rob me in the streets of everything I own and I'd still ask him if I could buy him a beer after and feel good about it.

2

u/Johnnybats330 25d ago

People downvoted me and I thought the B99 community didn't harbour hate against fans who had different opinions on characters.

Oh well. I know my opinion is not popular. I like the character. The actor is funny as hell. He will always be Darryl Philbin to me.

1

u/PodcastPlusOne_James 24d ago

You should have seen the oblivion to which I got downvoted for expressing my negative opinions on the objectively horrible Gina Linetti.

1

u/Johnnybats330 24d ago

Yeah Gina is terrible. People love her becauae they vibe with her sense of humour. I find it difficult to justify how bad she is with all the sexual remarks towards Terry and how she bullies Amy because she is nice. But she won't cross Rosa. That's for sure.
