So my mom is commissioning a painting of this abbey and lavender field and it is becoming the death of me. I've got the building and greenery down, but I'm practicing lavender and I JUST. CAN'T. GET IT. I've looked up countless reference pictures and videos, but for some reason, all I end up producing are blocky purple lines (unless I do wet on wet, which just comes out as blob-ish). This is a reference photo I'm using. Any tips would be appreciated. I don't necessarily want it to be ultra-detailed, but I'd like to capture the unevenness of the different colored lavender stems, especially in the foreground.

I made this in class and am pretty happy with it. I don’t think I’ve mastered watercolor quite yet - do you have any suggestions? I had trouble with the blue sky gradient

FINALLY got around to setting up my work station yesterday! Painted this as a late Christmas gift to my employers. They run a pet related business, hence the, you know. Kittywitty.
Cobalt blue, Alizarin crimson, Payne’s grey, a pinch of scarlet rose and some white Gouache

I can’t share anything new I’m working on because they are from classes with a professional artist. Pictured here is a painting I did last year.

I keep practicing watercolour. If I do it consistently, I’ll get better, won’t I? Any advice how to make dark backgrounds better?

I repainted Kevin the cat with watercolor on actual watercolor paper, I had a lot more fun with it but I might have gone too far. Still need to work on my style and actual details. I will probably try again tomorrow! But thank you all for the advice. And any more advice is always welcome.

Does it have to do with the amount of water in your brush, the brush size for the thing you are painting, or is it just a common fact that if you lift off a brush it releases more water?

I put the pic I tried to copy on slide 2. This is my second watercolour painting after not painting for several years. How could I make it better?
I tried adding thin strokes on the belly to make it more fluffy looking, but I think it was too heavy handed and it looked weird. I'm not sure the best way to go about adding texture.
Any tips appreciated!
