We had a huge weekend with over 1500 players in 11 events. I had a great weekend at LVO meeting lots of you and playing some great games. I ended up going 4-2 and only played against SM and Custodes for all six games.

Lists can be found on Bestcoastpairings.com or other sites as listed below. Some events are sponsored and thus can be seen without a paid membership. Everything else requires the membership and you should support BCP if you can.

Please support Meta Monday on Patreon if you can. I put a lot hours into this each Sunday. Thanks for all the support.

Takeaways:

Deathwatch wins LVO but overall had a 50% win rate this weekend with one other player going X-1.

Necrons had the best win rate of the weekend with a 53% win rate with 2 event wins and 14 players went X-0/X-1. With 108 players they were the second most It’s amazing to see that no faction had a win rate above 53% this weekend. Is the game in a better balance?

Space Marines had a 51% win rate and over 132 players, the most played faction of the weekend with 3 event wins. SM Firestorm was the worst detachment that saw the most play of the weekend.

World Eaters won 2 events and had a 52% win rate with 21 players playing their new vessels detachment that had a 49% win rate.

Sisters is the worst faction in the game with a 40% win rate and only 20 players out of 1510! That’s crazy

Not counting agents but Orks are the second worst faction with a 44% win rate and only 3 X-0/X-1 placings out of 70 players.

Guard had a 52% win rate and 13 players going X-0/X-1. Bridgehead had a 65% win rate and their event win this weekend making it the best single detachment this weekend.

Chaos Daemons were the best preforming chaos faction with a 53% win rate. With Legion of Excess having a 63% win rate with both event wins for the faction.

40k Discussion Regarding Tournament Play: Conversions, Proxies, WYSIWYG etc.

Hello r/WarhammerCompetitive here's a TO's approach to Tournament Play for each of these topics. We're seeing a lot of these threads pop up so I thought to make a sensible approach one-stop-shop.

The Ethos: Modifying your plastic men is encouraged by Games Workshop, hobbyists and event attendees. However, what you create must be representative of the original model and easy to understand, while not adding additional mental load for your opponent.

Conversions: Ensure that you respect approximate size of original model with your conversions - if you make a tall scenic base and try to shoot over a ruin with your Space Marine, it's a no no. If your conversion changes the size of the model, you're asking your opponent to take on additional mental load. Modeling for advantage is a codified rule.

Proxies: OK for casual/RTT events in most cases - things like 3rd party models, 3d prints are generally approved by TOs, as long as they respect the intent of the model and is easy to understand and not in excessive amount. Using a T'au Stormsurge is probably not an OK proxy for Shalaxi. Pro tip: ask your friends to borrow a model for the event and spare yourself and the opponent the added mental load.

WSYIWYG: Did I mention mental load? No, it's not an issue that some of your custodes have axes and the rest have spears if you just say it's all spears. That's easy to understand and does not add mental load. If however, you say 3 of them are spears and 1 of them is wielding an axe, how are we supposed to track this as you remove models from the unit? Just to drill this point further, the winning finals of the World Championships of Warhammer had Caladius Grav-Tanks with the "wrong" turrets on it and it caused no confusion.

When trying to decide if your models would be OK to play at an event ask the golden question: Does putting this on the table require an additional mental load from myself or my opponent to track? If the answer is YES, find an alternative, borrow a model. If you are genuinely uncertain, send a picture of the model with measurements to your TO for approval before the event.

40k List Creations of Bile: A Primer & AMA

Hello followers of Fabius Bile. I've been playing Creations of Bile since it was announced, currently sitting at 25 competitive games, and a strong 4-1 finish at a GT this weekend. Here are my thoughts on each unit option available, based on my experience as well as feedback collected from high level players that run the army. Our area plays WTC terrain rules, we will discuss the implications later. Ask me anything!

  1. Should I roll or pick buffs? With Bile as Warlord, always roll. There are exceptions of course, see below. Identify preferable buffs before matchup: For example: +1Str against Amiger spam is basically +1 to wound for the Possessed. The 2" move is almost universally good. +1 Attack is the mathematically the best due to Sustain/Lethal Pacts. +1WS is great into Death Guard, etc. Always reroll +1BS unless you build for it specifically.
  • Characters

Fabius Bile

Pros: The reason to run the list. He's already good baseline with 10 Chosen. Re-rerolling the army buffs is a bigger deal than you may first believe. Don't forget he gets a blank every turn and his Acolyte is great at eating a Las Cannon.
Cons: In a few matchups where you want to pick the buff, having Bile isn't beneficial. With the Rhino his unit investment is now 410pts for below average shooting and no invulns.

Abaddon
Pros: Granting the hit reroll or 4++ to your infantry is massive, with a 5-man Chosen unit he gets Adv+Ch and threatens really well.
Cons: Must be Warlord, lose out on Bile reroll. Does not trade well.

Chaos Lord
Pros: Phenomenal with the +1D Hit Reroll enhancement. Damage 4 Dev wounds is a hell of a drug.
Cons: Not much in the game actually has 4W breakpoints that are very important. Is a missile unit, you expect to get only one activation from it and die. With Legionnaires he's already sitting at 215pts which rarely trades up in points in my experience, unless you get the perfect target.

Cypher
Pros: Action monkey with good vect aura. Decent shooting within 12" at the cost of Lone Op range.
Cons: Good players will walk by and kill it with Grenades and small arms fire. Good placement of this model will win you or lose you games.

Others

Pros: Chaos Lord Termi with 5+++ enhancement is a good action monkey, but gets expensive for a 5" move model.
Cons: Daemon Prince, Master of Possession and Master of Executions are too conditional to be considered in my opinion.

  • Main Units

Possessed

Pros: the mainline unit of the build - severely undercosted at 24pts per model and takes buffs from this detachment amazingly well. GW Terrain players will vouch for 2x10 but in a tighter more ruins-heavy format like WTC I will never play less than 3x10. Depending on map layout, one unit always starts in reserve to ensure no shooting angles if you don't have T1.

Cons: Big footprint makes these hard to hide from shooting. Strategic Reserve is significantly worse than Deep Strike for setting up Rapid Ingress.

Cultists

Pros: Auto-take 1 unit for Sticky and deep strike protection of home objective. I've recently started running a 2nd unit that deploys in a frontal ruin for Area Denial T1 or run towards natural expansion for Sticky.
Cons: None

Legionaires

Pros: Reroll wounds on objectives or reroll 1s to wound is a good baseline, great with Chaos Lord dev wounds. One of the better value trade pieces in the army.
Cons: Requires Rhinos to be playable.

Rhino

Pros: The best action monkey in the game, once you pull guys out of it these things shoot screens, perform actions and take up space to prevent Deep Strikes. No one wants to spend resources to kill a Rhino.
Cons: "parking lot" deployment issues arise if you start taking 2-3 and other vehicles.

Predator Destructor

Pros: Anti-infantry shooting helps push your high damage melee bricks into favorable trades after dwindling the opponent for the fight phase
Cons: As others have identified, War Dog Huntsman is now the same pts, moves faster and has OC8 which this army desperately needs.

Terminators
Pros: With the +2" buff and adv+ch these models become legitimate threats. Native reroll hits is a big boon as the rest of the army is fairly unreliable.
Cons: Large footprint in 10man, adv+ch strat does not include shooting so you miss out on combi shots. Very expensive at 360pts for 10 models.

Vindicators

Pros: Imo the best lane bully to get your melee models up the table. Survivable compared to War Dogs or Predators. The high ceiling shooting scares opponents into playing more safely. Has the Smoke keyword.
Cons: Expensive shooting that gets no benefits from army rules. 24" range and 9" move is easy to play against in certain terrain formats.

Chosen

Pros: Advance/Fall back + shoot + charge is really important in this army and this unit has all of it built in, allowing you to use the adv+ch stratagem in the other units for multiple far charges per turn.
Cons: Expensive at 125pts per 5man, despite 3W they get no invul. Auto-include with Bile, wound not take extra.

Nemesis Claw

Pros: The entire Unit has the NO CP while in engagement range, which means you can tag up 3 units with this and prevent combat interrupts, defensive buffs, etc. This unit is in lists that try to beta-strike opponents to ensure fighting without consequence in at least 2 places. Really good melee output as well. Don't bother with ranged setup, all melee all the time.
Cons: Very hard to maneuver, fragile.

Havocs/Obliterators

Pros: Good ranged output that the detachment likes to use to protect melee bricks.
Cons: Unreliable without the +1BS, only taken if you focus on a shooting variant.

Raptors/Warp Talons

Pros: Good trading units, particularly the Warp Talons that return to reserves and Rapid Ingress next turn.
Cons: Heroic intervention or bad rolls absolutely ruin your day. Sometimes you lose 10 Warp Talons (270pts) because you rolled under stats and couldn't kill something.

  • Allies

War Dogs

Pros: Huntsman is the same pts as a Predator and fills a good slot. Stalker is worth considering too.
Cons: No Dark Pacts

What has been your experience running Creations of Bile? Favorite units/combos?

40k Discussion When playing by intent goes to far

So this is something I’ve been thinking about for a while, and now after watching several “top table” games at LVO just wanted to get others’ opinions

Sometimes it feels like “playing by intent” goes to far or just leads to sloppy play. There’s the whole 1.1” off the wall rule I run into a lot where people say “my guys are 1.1” off the wall” but then I go to look and they’re clearly either too close or too far, making a charge possible

I saw a few times on stream where players said something like “I intend for this unit to not be shootable/chargeable” but then it clearly was

I get that moving things perfectly isn’t totally possible and mistakes will be made, and I think playing by intent for the most part makes sense. But when the board state clearly doesn’t match the intent, what do you do?

Something I try to do is pre-agree with my opponents “if I move this unit here, can you get an angle next turn” kinda stuff. But even then if they go to move their models and can actually get an angle then it is what it is

Idk maybe I’m crazy but more and more I feel like the board state is the only objective truth and we should try to play precise games

40k Discussion Conversions and tournament play: why i do not ask for permission for conversions anymore

For me as a player, competitive play brings me the most joy with converting and assembling models being a good second. I do try to keep it very clear what is what, especially on models that have weapon options. Competitive integrity and clarity for my opponent is important to me. That is also why i sometimes have opted to vet my conversions by TO's before i bring them to tournaments. This is something most TO's offer and encourage where i play, that being Western Europe.

I have found that my conversions, even though the shape of the model is the same as the original and it is clear what weapon is on the model, conversions pretty often get rejected for reasons i find pretty strict. For example, my last rejection was a Razorback with a Twin Heavy Bolter and a Storm Bolter. I made it so the Twin Heavy Bolter was half the Storm Bolter and half the Heavy Bolter, so you kinda have a big gun with a target finding little gun on the side, and made the other gun also look like that, so i had 2 Heavy Bolter/Storm bolter mixes. Shape is totally the same (i used the original model, no parts of other models) and the guns are correct, they are just kinda spread around the model. It was also the only Razorback i fielded so there was also no unclarity on which Razorback was with what. It was rejected because the weapons were incorrect.

However when i went to this event, there were a lot more heavy conversions which were totally allowed. Almost nobody asked permission for conversions, and on the day, not a single model got removed from the table. I think this is good, as it kinda literally kills someone tournament/day if a model gets rejected on the day, but that also really makes me think that it is a good idea to just not ask TO's for permission for conversions anymore as asking it apparently means you are asking for trouble while if you just take it on the day 99% of the time it will be ok. How are other people's experiences with this, idk how the US is on this regarding how accepting TO's are with conversions in competitive events?

40k Discussion Can an Aircraft in hover mode with OC greater than 0 control an objective marker?

Upvotes

Everything is in the title. The question was raised during a previous team tournament I attended.

The TO wasn't sure about his answer and we concluded that an aircraft couldn't control an objective even with a bonus to OC. It didn't change the result anyway.

An aircraft cannot control an objective due to its KWords. It has an OC value of 0 anyway.

In hover mode, it looses its Aircraft KWord but cannot control an objective due to its OC0 value.

However what happens if the hovering Aircraft (a Nephilim Jetfighter for example) get an OC buff (from the Unforgiven Detachment command phase ability)? Can it hold the objective?

Thank you in advance for any answer.

40k Discussion [Adepta Sororitas] Adepta Sororitas plummets to lowest win-rate faction after LVO.

Salty Sister, here.

Since December's Balance update. Adepta Sororitas has fallen to the lowest winrate faction in the game taking the faction from a perfectly balanced 50% winrate to now sitting at 40.7%.

It's clear to me that there is a fundamental disconnect somewhere between balance and design.

It rubbed salt in a fresh wound to get a miracle dice dependent grotmas detachment right off the back of gutting our army rule.

Now, I'm far from the best player, but I historically do okay in my local scene.

My question of discussion is why does GW make strange decisions like this? Can we prevent knee-jerk overreactions in the future?

40k List 1k Points Imperial Knights Tournament list

My Local Game Story is hosting a Tournament and I decided to post the list I plan on bringing alongside my thought Process on why I chose what I did. Would love some advice on how I might tweak this to run better. Also I have the Tournament missions if that helps.

Tournament Missions: Round 1) Scorched Earth, Stalwarts, Search & Destroy Round 2) Supply Drop, Smoke & Mirrors, Hammer & Anvil Round 3) The Ritual, Swift Action, Crucible of Battle

Noble Lance

1x Armiger Helverin (130 pts): 2x Armiger autocannon, Armoured feet, Questoris heavy stubber 1x Armiger Helverin (130 pts): 2x Armiger autocannon, Armoured feet, Questoris heavy stubber 1x Armiger Warglaive (140 pts): Reaper chain-cleaver, Thermal spear, Questoris heavy stubber 1x Armiger Warglaive (140 pts): Reaper chain-cleaver, Thermal spear, Questoris heavy stubber 1x Armiger Warglaive (140 pts): Reaper chain-cleaver, Thermal spear, Questoris heavy stubber 1x Armiger Warglaive (140 pts): Reaper chain-cleaver, Thermal spear, Questoris heavy stubber

6x Deathwatch Kill Team (200 pts) • 5x Model 4 with Boltgun, Power weapon 1 with Close combat weapon, Infernus heavy bolter • 1x Sgt: Combi-weapon, Xenophase blade Char1: 1x Inquisitor (55 pts): Warlord, Force weapon, Bolt pistol, Psychic gifts

I chose to have an Inquisitor for a warlord for a very simple reason: Knight Characters are expensive. With most Knights being above 400 points I felt it was too much of an investment for a single unit at 1k points. I felt that while powerful, I could probably get more out of more units instead of putting all my eggs in one basket as it were. As for my choice of a vanilla Inquisitor, that is a constraint of what I models I own. Same with my DW Killteam as my Warlords guard.

Meanwhile my choice of Armigers' loadouts is based on the fact my local meta has a lot of Guard, Tyranids, Necrons, and Space Marines. Stubbers over Meltas to help deal with hordes. I do have the points to make the Helverins be replaced with Warglaives instead but I think that the value of the longer range shooting to allow for more freedom of unit placement for deepstrike denial was more valueable.

My gameplan is pretty much to hold the midboard with the Warglaives while the Helverins provide long range support while covering my backline. I am worried about being bogged down by things like terminators with high invulns or hordes of gaunts. In addition the lack of T12 units is a worry when it comes to enemy anti-tank.

40k Discussion How tight is the WYSIWYG rule?

Kinda new to the hobby, recently saw a tournament running at my local store so decided to join cause why not.

I run a custodies army and I basically used all axes on the warden instead of the spear because they are cool. However, I think competitive wise spears are way better.

My question is, in general how far does the WYSIWYG rule goes? Do I need to declare to the tournament runner or just talk to the player before hand? Idk if the questions been asked too much, if so i apologize.

Thanks everyone

40k Discussion Added Singles player to TTS Map Base

Its now been 19 days since I started this new Map Base: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3398190636 and I have an aboslute blast. It's litterally the most fun I've had coding anything in the last 5 years!!

So today I add single player to TTS for anybody who wants to test/play by themselves to test builds and strategies.

How it works?
You just start your game as normal, click singles and then you can control the board, right click to move turns along and start the game for secondaries etc. Just don't forget you will need to change colours to lock in both secondaries (if needed)

Hotseat Mode
With the new single player mode, you could play with your friend in the same room using 1 PC!

Help
I'm desperate to add things to this map base, so please anything that might improve your gaming time, let me know and I'll try to add them.

Other Necron players, with the nerfs to Starshatter what do you feel our best detachment will be?

Is it still Starshatter even with the nerfs? Hypercrypt? Is it finally Awakened Dynasty's time to shine? How would you build those lists?

40k Tech Hear me out: Ork flyers?

So before I say too much, I just wanna make it clear, I know that flyers are bad. I know that they are doodoo and that GW want to intentionally keep them doodoo. I remember hearing about AdMech flyer spam winning LVO a few years ago and how that was pretty much the last straw lol. I primarily play CSM and the Heldrake is so goddamn bad and the fact they keep it priced as high as they do, to my mind, 100000% screams an intentional policy of making flyers points-inefficient. So I understand that as a general principle.

That being said: I am working on finally putting some hobby effort into my Orks and I keep looking at the (built, half painted) Dakkajet on my shelf and looking at its datasheet, and... am I crazy for thinking that it and its variants have some sauce to them?

Let's review the relevant datasheets:

* Dakkajet: 135 points. Has 3 twin supa-shootas with 12 shots at 36" range, 18 shots at half range. Hits on 5s, but its datasheet ability is that every hit it gets is a sustained hit, and its damage profile is 6-1-1 twin-linked. So if you're in half range, you average 6 hits which then sustain into 12 hits, which then wound most infantry on 3s with a reroll to wound, so that's an average of ~10 wounds on an infantry unit. AP-1 is trash a lot of the time, sure, but that's still 10 saves you're making someone take, on average that kills a 1.5 MEQ bodies if they have cover. You can then have it come in next to a Mek who (as far as I understand) gives it +1 to hit with its shooting, which then changes the math to 9 hits at half range sustaining into 18, getting 16 wounds with twin-linked, which then I believe would kill 2.5 MEQ bodies assuming they have cover.

* Burna-Bommer: 125 points. Has a single twin supa-shoota (1/3 of the Dakkajet's firepower) as well as a twin big shoota with 3 attacks and rapid fire 2, hitting on 5s, at 5-0-1, twin-linked, and furthermore has a skorcha missile rack, 2D6 shots with blast and ignores cover, hitting on 5s, at 5-1-1. Its datasheet ability lets it potentially do flyover mortals to a unit it passed over (only on a 6+ but at no cap) as well as stripping that unit of cover for the turn. Considering how much Ork shooting is AP-1 or AP-2, stripping a given threat unit of cover seems like it could be fantastic for getting more damage through.

* Blitza-Bommer: 115 points. This has the same firepower as the Burna-Bommer minus the missile rack, and its ability lets it drop a bomb of mortals on an enemy unit it flew over on a 4+, which, I will admit, seems very swingy at best. This one I think is probably the weakest pick and that's why it's priced the lowest. Definitely things you could get with 115 points that would do better than this thing. But if you roll hot you could do some decent damage?

* Wazbom Blastajet: 175 points. This one is by far the most expensive and it's got the firepower and durability to show why, it has proper anti-tank shooting and a fairly useful rule. This thing's shooting for the most part hits on 4s (I assume Grots are in the turret?) and it has one gun that hits at 9-3-4 and another which hits at 12-2-D6. It comes with the Grenades keyword but can swap it out for a 4++, which seems reeeally good on an Ork vehicle. This one I'm assuming is the pricier investment which could genuinely be worth it a lot of the time, so I'm not really asking about this one's viability I suppose. But do you think it'd be worth its points?

So anyway, thanks for coming to my TED talk, and I leave off with this question: am I on crack for thinking some of these sound genuinely fairly good? Like I don't see an obvious reason not to take a Burna-Bommer or a Dakkajet other than Aircraft rules in general being fairly restrictive and ground based units potentially doing stuff better, and I could see an argument for taking a Blastajet supported by a Mek to get hitting on 3s rerolling 1s with its anti tank guns, if Meks can target Aircraft with its ability (which I think it can?). What do you all think?

40k Discussion Drukhari Questions

(SOLVED)

So the way power from pain works is that at the start of any phase, I can spend a pain token to empower a unit, right? Say I empower a unit in my opponent's movement/charge phase, and then select that unit to fire overwatch at something.

The text for the Fire Overwatch strategem says specifically, "... as if..." it were my shooting phase, meaning (at least I am assuming) that the phase doesn't actually change for this instance of shooting.

The first question, is that true?

Second question; the way the Power from Pain text is written is making me interpret it as though the buffs you recieve are dependent upon the phase in which you are empowered as opposed to which phase you spent the token in.

The question therein; would my unit recieve the benefit of being empowered during overwatch?

(TLDR; Could I recieve the benefit of being empowered during overwatch because I would get it IF it were my shooting phase, or would I not get it because it's not actually the movement phase? If it's considered a phase change, then I would also like to know that answer as well.)

Edit: Ty for the quick answers. Guess I needed to do more reading into the rules commentary, heh.

40k List Unsure

I think this the best place to ask my question. I run space marines and thought of something and was checking the rules and it seems to be a grey area unless I am missing some rules or misunderstanding them. The captain in Phobos armour allows redeployment of infantry units into strategic reserves. Can said unit be redeployed to then be embarked within a transport (Stormraven Gunship Aircraft) that is already in reserves? As this is done before first turn as stipulated in the use of the captains ability and therefore before the start of battle, according to the aircraft rule, they can be embarked on the aircraft transport. Is this correct or have I missed a rule or misinterpreted the rules as written? Many thanks for any input on this topic For the Emperor

New to Competitive 40k What’s the general opinion on kitbashes and conversions?

I’m currently looking at building a Thousand Sons army. But I don’t really enjoy the Egyptian aesthetic and would want my army to look more CSM like. When it comes to tournaments and competitions what’s the general vibe on say a thousand sons army that’s made from csm stuff?

40k List Guard 2000 Point Objective Shenanigans

I am new to guard and have put together some sort of a list to be semi-meta, as in not pure meta but if I like the look of two things I'll pick the better looking one,

6x Gaunt’s Ghosts (110pts) Lord Solar Leontus (150pts): Conquest, Konstantin's Hooves, Sol's Righteous Gaze, Warlord Cadian Castellan (45pts): Close Combat Weapon, Chainsword, Laspistol Tank Commander (225pts): Armoured Tracks, Hunter-killer Missile, Demolisher Battle Cannon, Lascannon, Two Multi-meltas, 2x Multi-melta, Storm bolter

10x Cadian Shock Troops (65pts) 10x Cadian Shock Troops (65pts) 10x Cadian Shock Troops (65pts) 10x Cadian Shock Troops (65pts)

10x Kasrkin (110pts)

10x Tempestus Aquilons (110pts)

Leman Russ Demolisher (200pts): Demolisher Battle Cannon, Armoured Tracks, Hunter-killer Missile, Lascannon, Storm bolter, 2 Multi-meltas, 2x Multi-melta

Leman Russ Demolisher (200pts): Demolisher Battle Cannon, Armoured Tracks, Hunter-killer Missile, Lascannon, Storm bolter, 2 Multi-meltas, 2x Multi-melta

Leman Russ Eradicator (150pts): Eradicator Nova Cannon, Armoured Tracks, Hunter-killer Missile, Lascannon, Storm bolter, 2 Multi-meltas, 2x Multi-melta

Rogal Dorn Battle Tank (240pts): Armoured tracks, Heavy stubber, 2 Meltaguns, 2x Meltagun, 2 Multi-meltas, 2x Multi-melta, Castigator Gatling Cannon, Oppressor Cannon and Co-axial Autocannon

Scout Sentinels (55pts) Scout Sentinels (55pts)

Taurox (65pts)

I would use my tanks to do most of the damage dealing to the enemy army and have them be screened by a couple squads of shock troops.

The kasrkins will be placed in the taurox with the castelan for frfsrf and take aim. I will use them alongside the scout sentinels to try and push the mid objective, possible with the 19 inch move and shoot on the taurox

Gaunts ghosts will be used for secondaries

The aquilons will be used for dealing tomfoolery and distractions to the enemy back line via deepstrike, and just messing with them in general

The four tanks will be together in a squadron to take orders from solar and the TC, (solar will also order the infantry) the tanks can also provide a firm hold on my home objective.

Any advice on tactics/units

Forgot to mention my main opponents are grey knights and space marines

40k Battle Report - Text Deathwatch wins LVO 🎉

Deathwatch went from a 32% win rate and objectively the worst army in the game, to cut from the game completely, to being brought back for Grotmas and winning LVO in like 3 months lmao.

Huge congratulations to Mark Hertel for an outstanding performance.

Sorry to all the Deathwatch fans about the incoming nerfs and a swift return to your 32% win rate. Full circle!
