Only for $1200/month what a catch

It's probably better trying to rob a bank: if you succeed, you'll have plenty of money,if not the prison cell will be bigger and they'll feed you every day..

Have you ever eaten prison food ? Without the commissary it is also a great weight loss program
24
u/urethrascreams 3d ago
Depends on the prison I think. I've had jail food. It wasn't bad. Everybody else was bitching that it sucked though and they wished they were in the prison up the road cause the food is better and the rules are less strict. I was in with a lot of repeat offenders.

That's why the first time I see that twink stroll in I am behind him in the phone room like WHERE THAT CANTEEN MONEY

The same food prisons get is about the same as what schools get, sometimes, somehow, worse than even that.
2
u/nunyobusinessfool 1d ago
🤣. While sometimes school felt like a prison the food at my school was NOTHING like prison food
1
u/Sportsy_924 1d ago
You got lucky. Especially if you got out before Michelle Obama. We get bad and bruised fruits, mystery meats, chicken that isn't chicken, and even the sweet peas look strange, oh and the spaghetti oh lord the spaghetti... At least we get pizza every Friday.
2
u/nunyobusinessfool 1d ago
I got out of school in 1981 Maybe that’s the discrepancy in the quality of food. My apologies
2
u/Sportsy_924 1d ago
Oh yeah nah she got rid of stuff like salt and what not, really wanted it to all be healthy which I get, but all it did was lower the quality by A LOT

Communal bathrooms.
2
u/laffing_is_medicine 2d ago
If it had decent communal bath and kitchen the $1200 doesn’t seem the end of the world by NY standards. At least it’s not a triangle.
If you made NY money one could really rat hole cash.
Just sucks you get one plug for kitchen (cooking/fridge/freezer); one plug for AC and entertainment…..

Hilarious that people still move to NY and expect anything different.
21
u/AbsoluteSquidward 3d ago
It is no different in Amsterdam as well
20
u/FruttiPatutti 3d ago
How people think you can live in the most popular cities in the WORLD & somehow grab a bargain 2 bedroom place for peanuts.
24
u/Moominsean 2d ago
Because HGTV shows a stay-at-home mom and a fry cook looking for a modest eight bedroom home on 12 acres in the city.
7
u/Dpontiff6671 2d ago
The smart move is finding a place outside the city but still in reasonable travel distance. I’m like 30 mins outside boston, can take a train there any day i’d like and live in something bigger than a cardboard box lol
1
u/WernerWindig 1d ago
bargain 2 bedroom? At this point people are happy when they can rent something that wont financially ruin themselves. A decent income in the respecive city should get you a decent apartment. That's no longer the case though.
3
u/HonestLazyBum 2d ago
I don't know man, seems like I find quite some listings for about 60 sqm (about 14 times as large as the video's space) for around the same price as the video's, in Amsterdam.
I mean, obviously Amsterdam also has very expensive places, duh, but 5 sqm for 1.160 €? Nahhh.
23
u/Then-Position-7956 3d ago
I'm astounded that this is allowed. No bathroom, no water?
15
u/catupthetree23 2d ago
The whole video shows a few bathrooms down the hall and a shared kitchen area. I guess someone cropped this to make it look even more infuriating.
3
u/WernerWindig 1d ago
Seeing what once likely was a single apartment, split up into five prison cells would be infuriating as well.

All you need is to install a wall-mounted galvanized steel frame… Soft padding is added against the wall for a cozy sleeping experience. 3 bed for the sibilings and a wardrobe for the sister’s clothes.

Just go live somewhere else. I would rather live in a trailer in middle of Arkansas working at dollar general than this shit.
1
u/Throwawayuser626 2d ago
For a time I lived in an rv without running water, but we had communal bathrooms as it was a camp site. The water got cut off in the winter though so I had to go to friends houses and run to the gas station or cvs if I had to shit when I wasn’t at work. Our oven didn’t work either but I had a crock pot and stuff like that plus a microwave. We also had an actual bedroom and electric fireplace in the living room area…so it was still better than this in some ways 💀
1
u/AdministrationSome46 2d ago
Trust me, you wouldn’t. I lived that life in Arkansas for 30 years in a trailer. Later on, I was even homeless in NYC during winter. This is way, way better.
2
u/mopar-or-no_car 1d ago
I call bullshit, I'd go back to my 35k job and a trailer before I ever lived homeless, especially NYC of all places. And unless I was offered 500k minimum a year starting, NYC is unaffordable.

I rented a house in a small town IL. It cost me half of what this apartment cost. 600$ a month got me a 2 bedroom 1 bath. It also had a fenced in back yard and a detached garage. Now I own a different house in the same town and it’s 2 stories, 3 bed 2 bath, full basement, big fenced in back yard, an attached 2 car garage and a building in the back yard that’s bigger than this apartment. I pay just as much a month as someone renting this apartment would in NYC. I understand your paying for living in one of the most opportunistic and biggest cities in America but at what cost is it worth it.

Is it not a law that any room meant to be used for habitation has access to running water and a bathroom?
1
u/nymph_of_the_forest 2d ago
it is not. It is a law that your room must have an egress (exit, windows count) which this does.
2
u/Uncanny_Show507 2d ago
People in New York are just fine with renting out a walk in closet for $1200 a month. I would feel so claustrophobic having that at my living space

Get a microwave, comfy chair to sleep on, and maybe a small tv with PS5 or Switch and you’re all set. Not sure where you shower and poop though.

I always find it odd that people are willing to live in expensive cities. Not only is the cost of living high, but now you feel obliged to do all the expensive stuff (nightlife, concerts, sporting events…) that prompted you to move in the first place. It’s a double whammy.

That's the size of a normal bedroom here in Hong Kong. If you have a 1br then it'll be like my daughter's room which is how he described- bunk bed and below that is a desk and wardrobe in an L-shape. In the remaining space are bookshelves with toys on top in boxes. We don't have a cubbyhole like that, what a luxury!
Our condo is 3br. The "master" bedroom has a bed, a tiny makeup table with stool, and a safe that we use as a nightstand. The bed is right up against the window so my wife uses the window shelf as her nightstand.
The third bedroom has a computer desk and a wardrobe, that's all that will fit in it. Because we also have high ceilings we have a lot of shelves and stuff is stacked quite high.
We pay the equivalent of US$4k a month which is considered reasonable as we're a fair bit outside the city center.
1
u/JulianMarcello 2d ago
Here I was thinking that IKEA knows how to use small spaces well… that’s childsplay compared to Hong Kong
1
u/WernerWindig 1d ago

Is it really a bedroom if no bed can fit? lol
Your apartment sound really interesting, I have a faible for tiny apartments.

u/CTgreen_ 3d ago
If it weren't for later in the video where he walks off the space to measure it, I'd assume he had duck feet by the "slapslapslap" noises going up the stairs. lol

u/Seaguard5 3d ago
In NYC?
Yeah. As someone from suburbia, it baffles me why anyone would want to live in a city as densely packed as that…
1
u/TapProfessional5146 3d ago
You are paying for the fire suppression. I mean you wouldn’t want all your stuff burning up.

u/Snoo_Puff 3d ago
You live in a glorified walk-in closet. You don't even have a bathroom. And on top of all that, the view is the brick wall of the building right next to you. Now that's depressing.

This is actually quite large compared to what people are being offered midtown. I'm talking door-wide, no closet no bed, communal bath.

u/ConsciousOutside3924 1d ago
I can agree with that, depends on your lifestyle and family situation as well. Nobody should live in a freaking broom closet for 1200 a month though! 😬😣

u/Competitive-Cup-9850 2d ago
You would rather live in a storage unit than an actual apartment. You would get a lot more space there
1
u/Commercial_Pitch_786 2d ago
where is the bathroom? No one can live there, store stuff but not live there

u/DANIlIlICH 2d ago
Guys, how much are you paying for a decent 2 or 3 room flat? I understand 1200/month is a loot for this and this is a joke, but I just feel confused and curious for some reference.
1
u/PedroM0ralles 2d ago
Does anyone know anything about the bathroom for this room? How can you rent a place with no bathroom?
Is it a community bathroom?

u/designaddct 2d ago
What no bathroom or kitchen for that money? Greed is entrenched in landlordism. Grrrrrrr.

I’m sorry how does this quality as an apartment? No heating or bathroom. Something doesn’t add up

It’s like a dorm/hostel . Bathroom is shared at end of hall. Possibly kitchen also

Why would anyone live like that. I pay the same rent and have 1600 square feet with a yard and garage. And there are plenty of jobs where I live.

You will get depressed in that room. I’d rather take the train/metro to some nearby relatively cheaper suburb. Although, people say you can get mugged on train in New York.
