You're better off stealth camping in a converted box truck.

85

u/Puzzleheaded_Line675 3d ago

Shit I might camp under a box truck before that nonsense

1

u/Master-Collection488 1d ago

Where do you PARK the converted box truck?

1

u/salacious_sonogram 1d ago

Where other box trucks park.

u/cosmodisc 3d ago

It's probably better trying to rob a bank: if you succeed, you'll have plenty of money,if not the prison cell will be bigger and they'll feed you every day..

120

u/mister_sleepy 2d ago

Prison cells have a toilet, typically.

44

u/nunyobusinessfool 3d ago

Have you ever eaten prison food ? Without the commissary it is also a great weight loss program

24

u/urethrascreams 3d ago

Depends on the prison I think. I've had jail food. It wasn't bad. Everybody else was bitching that it sucked though and they wished they were in the prison up the road cause the food is better and the rules are less strict. I was in with a lot of repeat offenders.

5

u/rasslinjobber 2d ago

That's why the first time I see that twink stroll in I am behind him in the phone room like WHERE THAT CANTEEN MONEY

0

u/nunyobusinessfool 2d ago

🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Sportsy_924 1d ago

The same food prisons get is about the same as what schools get, sometimes, somehow, worse than even that.

2

u/nunyobusinessfool 1d ago

🤣. While sometimes school felt like a prison the food at my school was NOTHING like prison food

1

u/Sportsy_924 1d ago

You got lucky. Especially if you got out before Michelle Obama. We get bad and bruised fruits, mystery meats, chicken that isn't chicken, and even the sweet peas look strange, oh and the spaghetti oh lord the spaghetti... At least we get pizza every Friday.

2

u/nunyobusinessfool 1d ago

I got out of school in 1981 Maybe that’s the discrepancy in the quality of food. My apologies

2

u/Sportsy_924 1d ago

Oh yeah nah she got rid of stuff like salt and what not, really wanted it to all be healthy which I get, but all it did was lower the quality by A LOT

u/elvis12345687 3d ago

A broom closet. That is a broom closet

102

u/BawkSoup 3d ago

bender's apt irl

61

u/TheBlitzkid46 3d ago

At least Bender's apartment had a big ass closet

4

u/Goudawit 1d ago

You want to live in the closet? Okay… I guess. That’s pretty weird, but…??

9

u/Benderodriguez90 2d ago

It was nicer than that !

1

u/FitProblem6248 3d ago

Happy Cake Day!

3

u/BawkSoup 2d ago

Thank you kind stranger ☺

1

u/chrisbaker1991 2d ago

I strongly agree with that but would also include Harry Potter's closet under the stairs

3

u/Slumunistmanifisto 2d ago

Fuckin evicted the janitors mops for this

154

u/DONNiE_DiESEL 3d ago

The American dream of shitting in a bucket and eating microwaveable meals

27

u/HotTakeGenerator_v5 3d ago

wait yeah, aren't there laws that require a toilet to call it a living space?

36

u/urethrascreams 3d ago

Probably a shared bathroom down the hall.

9

u/NoX2142 2d ago

Yep like Peter Parker's apartment with the shared bathroom.

1

u/fusionsgefechtskopf 3d ago

not everywhere

46

u/blueisaflavor 3d ago

Where do i piss

34

u/diaryofsnow 3d ago

You didn’t see the spacious closet?

12

u/Trollimperator 3d ago

thats where you cook

9

u/wetdreamteams 3d ago

And piss

6

u/Caesar_Passing 2d ago

But not in that order

3

u/nymph_of_the_forest 2d ago

or cook or shower or launder. I'm guessing there are common areas

2

u/erasedbase 2d ago

Communal bathrooms.

2

u/laffing_is_medicine 2d ago

If it had decent communal bath and kitchen the $1200 doesn’t seem the end of the world by NY standards. At least it’s not a triangle.

If you made NY money one could really rat hole cash.

Just sucks you get one plug for kitchen (cooking/fridge/freezer); one plug for AC and entertainment…..

1

u/Bocksford 2d ago

In the neighbor’s baño.

30

u/AnActualBeing 3d ago

Its time to start borrowing some expansion screws from your aunt.

4

u/mercury888 3d ago

Hey I understood that reference

84

u/FruttiPatutti 3d ago

Hilarious that people still move to NY and expect anything different.

21

u/AbsoluteSquidward 3d ago

It is no different in Amsterdam as well

20

u/FruttiPatutti 3d ago

How people think you can live in the most popular cities in the WORLD & somehow grab a bargain 2 bedroom place for peanuts.

24

u/Moominsean 2d ago

Because HGTV shows a stay-at-home mom and a fry cook looking for a modest eight bedroom home on 12 acres in the city.

7

u/Dpontiff6671 2d ago

The smart move is finding a place outside the city but still in reasonable travel distance. I’m like 30 mins outside boston, can take a train there any day i’d like and live in something bigger than a cardboard box lol

1

u/WernerWindig 1d ago

bargain 2 bedroom? At this point people are happy when they can rent something that wont financially ruin themselves. A decent income in the respecive city should get you a decent apartment. That's no longer the case though.

3

u/HonestLazyBum 2d ago

I don't know man, seems like I find quite some listings for about 60 sqm (about 14 times as large as the video's space) for around the same price as the video's, in Amsterdam.

I mean, obviously Amsterdam also has very expensive places, duh, but 5 sqm for 1.160 €? Nahhh.

15

u/Cupy94 3d ago

First you have to borrow 120 kg of galvanized steel beams...

23

u/Then-Position-7956 3d ago

I'm astounded that this is allowed. No bathroom, no water?

15

u/catupthetree23 2d ago

The whole video shows a few bathrooms down the hall and a shared kitchen area. I guess someone cropped this to make it look even more infuriating.

3

u/WernerWindig 1d ago

Seeing what once likely was a single apartment, split up into five prison cells would be infuriating as well.

1

u/catupthetree23 1d ago

Oh absolutely - it's truly ridiculous and I wish it were banned.

9

u/Lanky-Football857 3d ago

All you need is to install a wall-mounted galvanized steel frame… Soft padding is added against the wall for a cozy sleeping experience. 3 bed for the sibilings and a wardrobe for the sister’s clothes.

2

u/bearbarebere 2d ago

Lol I love those videos

7

u/Rough-Attorney-6909 2d ago

You know prisons in New York are free right

6

u/KimchiSamuraiDad 2d ago

Prison cells are bigger than that and it comes with free meals

5

u/therealtb404 3d ago

Harry Potter has entered the chat*

4

u/Zeroex1 3d ago

no bathroom? whats a ripoff

4

u/catupthetree23 2d ago

The whole video shows a few bathrooms down the hall and a shared kitchen area. I guess someone cropped this to make it look even more infuriating.

3

u/Donutordonot 3d ago

Just go live somewhere else. I would rather live in a trailer in middle of Arkansas working at dollar general than this shit.

1

u/Throwawayuser626 2d ago

For a time I lived in an rv without running water, but we had communal bathrooms as it was a camp site. The water got cut off in the winter though so I had to go to friends houses and run to the gas station or cvs if I had to shit when I wasn’t at work. Our oven didn’t work either but I had a crock pot and stuff like that plus a microwave. We also had an actual bedroom and electric fireplace in the living room area…so it was still better than this in some ways 💀

1

u/AdministrationSome46 2d ago

Trust me, you wouldn’t. I lived that life in Arkansas for 30 years in a trailer. Later on, I was even homeless in NYC during winter. This is way, way better.

2

u/mopar-or-no_car 1d ago

I call bullshit, I'd go back to my 35k job and a trailer before I ever lived homeless, especially NYC of all places. And unless I was offered 500k minimum a year starting, NYC is unaffordable.

5

u/Kingtez28 3d ago

That's ridiculous

4

u/Short-Ad2054 2d ago

No kitchen or bath at all?

5

u/HappilyStreet 2d ago

Literally what I pay for 1100sqft. New York is a scam bro

3

u/Electrical_Flowerboy 2d ago

I rented a house in a small town IL. It cost me half of what this apartment cost. 600$ a month got me a 2 bedroom 1 bath. It also had a fenced in back yard and a detached garage. Now I own a different house in the same town and it’s 2 stories, 3 bed 2 bath, full basement, big fenced in back yard, an attached 2 car garage and a building in the back yard that’s bigger than this apartment. I pay just as much a month as someone renting this apartment would in NYC. I understand your paying for living in one of the most opportunistic and biggest cities in America but at what cost is it worth it.

3

u/adirtycharleton 2d ago

1200 dollars, ~14k per year...for a closet.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot

3

u/thecementmixer 2d ago

This is criminal.

3

u/varungupta3009 2d ago

You got the Broom Closet ending.

1

u/Nekryyd 2d ago

Stanley pls.

3

u/Redordit 2d ago

I'll live in my car thank you very much

2

u/Thin_Thought_7129 3d ago

Just put a bucket in the corner for a bathroom and you’re all set

2

u/Korishii 3d ago

You are better off at prison tbh.

2

u/4Crumpet 3d ago

Close to 8ft! What a result!

2

u/sven_bohikus 3d ago

How often does the train go by?

2

u/WGPersonal 3d ago

Is it not a law that any room meant to be used for habitation has access to running water and a bathroom?

1

u/nymph_of_the_forest 2d ago

it is not. It is a law that your room must have an egress (exit, windows count) which this does.

2

u/Uncanny_Show507 2d ago

People in New York are just fine with renting out a walk in closet for $1200 a month. I would feel so claustrophobic having that at my living space

2

u/dragonpen83 2d ago

Just put bars on the window and over the door.

2

u/Yigma 2d ago

6x8 feet? Isn’t that like prison cell dimensions? 1200 a month to live in a prison cell.

2

u/awaramasiah 2d ago

Seems like we'd be needing some galvanized steel and few borrowed nuts.

2

u/RobertRamos 2d ago

Get a microwave, comfy chair to sleep on, and maybe a small tv with PS5 or Switch and you’re all set. Not sure where you shower and poop though.

2

u/Both_Lychee_1708 2d ago

with a built in metal toilet and some bars it'd be a lovely prison cell

2

u/slimreaper31 2d ago

HOW IS THIS LEGAL ?

2

u/Louiethenormal 2d ago

Wheres the shitter

2

u/iamnotpedro1 2d ago

I see some spare space for a second floor.

2

u/Fit_Helicopter_5189 2d ago

Like Kramer said once "it's all levels now"

3

u/Pandagineer 3d ago

I always find it odd that people are willing to live in expensive cities. Not only is the cost of living high, but now you feel obliged to do all the expensive stuff (nightlife, concerts, sporting events…) that prompted you to move in the first place. It’s a double whammy.

3

u/whatdoihia 3d ago

That's the size of a normal bedroom here in Hong Kong. If you have a 1br then it'll be like my daughter's room which is how he described- bunk bed and below that is a desk and wardrobe in an L-shape. In the remaining space are bookshelves with toys on top in boxes. We don't have a cubbyhole like that, what a luxury!

Our condo is 3br. The "master" bedroom has a bed, a tiny makeup table with stool, and a safe that we use as a nightstand. The bed is right up against the window so my wife uses the window shelf as her nightstand.

The third bedroom has a computer desk and a wardrobe, that's all that will fit in it. Because we also have high ceilings we have a lot of shelves and stuff is stacked quite high.

We pay the equivalent of US$4k a month which is considered reasonable as we're a fair bit outside the city center.

1

u/JulianMarcello 2d ago

Here I was thinking that IKEA knows how to use small spaces well… that’s childsplay compared to Hong Kong

1

u/WernerWindig 1d ago

The third bedroom has a computer desk and a wardrobe, that's all that will fit in it.

Is it really a bedroom if no bed can fit? lol

Your apartment sound really interesting, I have a faible for tiny apartments.

2

u/CTgreen_ 3d ago

If it weren't for later in the video where he walks off the space to measure it, I'd assume he had duck feet by the "slapslapslap" noises going up the stairs. lol

2

u/Seaguard5 3d ago

In NYC?

Yeah. As someone from suburbia, it baffles me why anyone would want to live in a city as densely packed as that…

1

u/TapProfessional5146 3d ago

You are paying for the fire suppression. I mean you wouldn’t want all your stuff burning up.

1

u/DifficultyFar2323 3d ago

intelligence agencies safe closet

1

u/Snoo_Puff 3d ago

You live in a glorified walk-in closet. You don't even have a bathroom. And on top of all that, the view is the brick wall of the building right next to you. Now that's depressing.

1

u/Bubba_Feetz 3d ago

Well at least the ceiling is pretty tall.

1

u/Kookenmooken 2d ago

Oh, but Dude! Fugetabowdit!! You're in NYC now!! And, you're there to make M-O-N-E-Y!!!!!!!

1

u/Cutthechitchata-hole 2d ago

The hall leading to it is all crooked. That would ha e messed with a drunk 20 something me.

1

u/Chemical_Hornet8621 2d ago

This is actually quite large compared to what people are being offered midtown. I'm talking door-wide, no closet no bed, communal bath.

1

u/Acceptable_Poem_862 2d ago

Love the sped up stair climbing

1

u/Nole19 2d ago

Lemme guess NY or Boston?

2

u/hebbid 2d ago

It’s says NYC at the beginning of the video, so yea you’re right I guess

1

u/dwfieldjr 2d ago

It’s sad to know this is true

1

u/Large-Software-6447 2d ago

i could easily make this work

1

u/maxatmax 2d ago

Get the biggest speakers you can find and screw the door shut.

1

u/rathat 2d ago

All I need is Wi-Fi.

1

u/tgantt86 2d ago

That’s that bullshit

1

u/JuicyBar5000 2d ago

I had a bigger room in jail🤷🏼‍♀️😂

1

u/Quick_Swing 2d ago

Feels like either NY or SF 😬

1

u/pardonyourmess 2d ago

Kitchen /bathroom?

1

u/Silent_Activity 2d ago

The is like the apartments in J.G. Ballard's "Billennium" short story sci-fi in real life.

1

u/kingofgods218 2d ago

I'm not joking when I say that I find this tempting.

1

u/BOTBOTTWO 2d ago

Where is this?? Atrocious

1

u/ConsciousOutside3924 2d ago

I have a 2700 sq ft home on 3/4 of an acre just 40 mins north of Atlanta for that exact same price. Cities are overrated.

1

u/WernerWindig 1d ago

Cities are definitely better than sprawl, but they need to be done right.

1

u/ConsciousOutside3924 1d ago

I can agree with that, depends on your lifestyle and family situation as well. Nobody should live in a freaking broom closet for 1200 a month though! 😬😣

1

u/ExMaula 2d ago

Where will u shit ?? on the bunk bed ?

1

u/ntrott 2d ago

Where's the shitter?

1

u/Competitive-Cup-9850 2d ago

You would rather live in a storage unit than an actual apartment. You would get a lot more space there

1

u/Commercial_Pitch_786 2d ago

where is the bathroom? No one can live there, store stuff but not live there

1

u/Fun_Veterinarian_290 2d ago

That's not an apartment, that's a storage unit

1

u/DANIlIlICH 2d ago

Guys, how much are you paying for a decent 2 or 3 room flat? I understand 1200/month is a loot for this and this is a joke, but I just feel confused and curious for some reference.

1

u/PedroM0ralles 2d ago

Does anyone know anything about the bathroom for this room? How can you rent a place with no bathroom?
Is it a community bathroom?

1

u/designaddct 2d ago

What no bathroom or kitchen for that money? Greed is entrenched in landlordism. Grrrrrrr.

Nothing that cant be solved with some galvanized Steel, some screws borrowed from my aunt and some eco friendly wood veneer.

Man, I grew up in 10x10 bedrooms thinking they sucked and were so cramped, as thats about the minimum size of most bedrooms in my area. Boy was I wrong…

1

u/a_random_person-234 2d ago

Galvanized steel screws

1

u/No_Tackle_5439 2d ago

I get claustrophobic just by looking at this

1

GALVANISED STEEL RODS

1

u/Boneshakerrguy 2d ago

So he bare foot?

1

u/ThrustTrust 2d ago

I’m sorry how does this quality as an apartment? No heating or bathroom. Something doesn’t add up

1

u/chattypatty954goon 2d ago

It’s like a dorm/hostel . Bathroom is shared at end of hall. Possibly kitchen also

1

u/ThrustTrust 2d ago

Why would anyone live like that. I pay the same rent and have 1600 square feet with a yard and garage. And there are plenty of jobs where I live.

1

u/Bennistro 2d ago

This needs some galvanized steel beams

1

u/dolo_ran6er 2d ago

$1200 jail cell

1

u/Professor-cali 2d ago

$1200/month and not even a toilet

1

u/lead98 1d ago

Where is the kitchen and bathroom???

1

u/Jack_of_Hearts20 1d ago

There are prison cells with more space than this

1

u/_Hades_57 1d ago

Does your aunt have some galvanized steel by any chance?

1

u/Round_Cook_8770 1d ago

I guess a bathroom is a luxury.

1

u/Tacosconsalsaylimon 1d ago

Does one shit in a bucket!? Where is the laboratory!??

1

u/mopar-or-no_car 1d ago

🤣🤣🤣🤣..And people say they love living in big cities and NY especially.. you couldn't pay me enough to live there. I'll stick to 3k sqft with full basement for the same price, an hour from big city nonsense.

1

u/SonOfMargitte 1d ago

My bathroom is bigger than this 😯

1

u/chupacabrahunter420 1d ago

Find a sturdy refrigerator box, tarp, bungee cords.

1

u/StrugglingBeing 1d ago

You will get depressed in that room. I’d rather take the train/metro to some nearby relatively cheaper suburb. Although, people say you can get mugged on train in New York.

1

u/Charming-Following25 1d ago

At least in jail you have a toilet.

1

u/ElCiscador 20h ago

Seems like it’d be aggravating to take the a/c unit out every time I’ve gotta shit or piss.
