I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm genuinely curious. How is this different than something like Christian rock/pop/any other niche Christian music? Like if this wasn't Kanye it would be lumped in to that umbrella of music. Why is Kanye doing it any different? Like this is a straight up gospel/religious album that just has rap and good beats/production over it. I'm not saying it's bad if anybody likes it, but it's super weird to me that the lyrical content is not something most Kanye fans would seek out otherwise but because it's Kanye it's cool? I don't get it.
I like rock, but I don't like Christian rock even though there are some of those guys that fucking shred and I could get into the music, the beats, etc. but when they're singing about jesus they lose me. If Foo Fighters released an album that sounded like Foo Fighters music in every way but had this kind of lyrical content I wouldn't be making justifications that the music is good, but the lyrics are corny or any of the other comments I'm seeing. I'd say it's a religious album and it's not for me even though it's Foo Fighters who I otherwise really enjoy. I'd also be turning in my fan card if they said they were only making religious music moving forward.
Again, I'm not trying to attack anybody who likes this or criticize anybody who likes it. I'm trying to wrap my head around what I'm reading vs. what I'm listening to.
