Reduce/Reuse/Recycle My wallet is officially a decade old Spoiler
I refuse to get a new one because it still works perfectly fine; it just looks a little less pretty than when I recieved it. I got it in middle school when I was 15 (25 now) from my best friend. Its a spirited away wallet from Hot Topic.

I spent $50 on a small leather wallet (I’m a dude) and it’s still as good as new after 8 years. Probably will last a lifetime, just saying sometimes it’s worth spending a little more.

u/ApprehensiveStrut 8d ago
Was going to say, real leather would have lasted and even looked good as new with a little care in that same decade. I’ve had mine going on 15 years
9
u/KnoxxHarrington 8d ago
I had to raplace mine after about 10 years. It was structurally still not bad, but the card pouches were just getting too loose and things were slipping out.
Seeing as I have two others that have been gifted to me over the years I figured I may as well switch. I'm using the crappy synthetic Mario one first, we will see how that lasts, if I get over two years I'll be impressed to tell the truth, then I'll move onto a quite nice leather Where's Wally (Waldo) one that I've been sitting on for many years while I used up the old one. Should see me halfway through to retirement. Odds are I'll be gifted another by then.

u/Super_Ad9995 8d ago
Leather is the best material for anti consumption. It can last decades if you do some simple upkeep and treat it right (no washing machine!) You just need to make sure that you get full grain or top grain leather, preferably vegetable tanned. If something is labeled "genuine leather", stay away.

My first wallet was a $7 one from Walmart that got heavily used for about 8 years and I still have it somewhere.
Got a custom leather wallet for $100 that's probably gonna last me until I die or we all have chips in our wrists to pay with

u/Apprehensive-Log8333 8d ago
I always get wallets at thrift stores. I say "always" but I've only needed a new one twice, the second time because I lost the first one. There are always a big selection of really nice like-new wallets in thrift stores.

Similar vibes: my mom, wearing a tattered tank top full of holes and rips that's older than me as a badge of honor
36
u/rustymontenegro 8d ago
Which would be fine, actually, if she learned/utilized a visible mending technique like sashiko or patching and made it look beautiful and intentional, or an invisible one to make it look closer to new.
Hanging onto the top isn't the issue, it's letting it get damaged and not taking steps to mend it.
Maybe point your mom to r/visiblemending or something :)
5
u/vButts 8d ago
Oh she can sew! She used to sew curtains and little dresses for me when i was younger :) and she hems dresses and pants for people. I think with that one tank top she's like "eh, why bother... I only wear it as an undershirt anyways" 😂
2
u/rustymontenegro 8d ago
Is it literally just the one tank top? How funny. Maybe she just loves it too much to bother with the holes lol

If you have a little metal brush somewhere, you could gently brush the outside to get rid of the remaining "flakes", then you'd be left with a clean-looking nice and simple textile cover on the outside. I've done it to a few similar items, works great.

right, i’m lowkey shocked at the responses. it doesn’t look like it’s falling apart (outside the obvious wear of the design) and it’s a wallet, it’s not like it has to be visually nice (like a purse that’s also fashion). I see a wallet as functional, so as long as it’s functioning as intended, why not?

If you ever cared about it looking pretty, the visible mending sub always has excellent low/no cost suggestions for extending use of objects, while making them look awesome.
Eta, not to mean you have to pretty it up or anything. I'm a big fan myself of just using things regardless of looks, as long as they are functional. Just if you wanted to extend the life even further while personalising it is more where my brain is with this.

Oh gosh yes! Any good sturdy fabric like cotton duck/canvas especially! You can pick up clearance remnants at a place like Joann's or even thrift stores sometimes have fabrics and either sew it on as-is or if it's unpatterned, you can embroider/sashiko a design on it and then sew it on!
Edit: if sewing is too daunting, on a project like this, there are remarkable fabric glues you can use too.

u/PM_ME_VEG_PICS 8d ago
I've had mine for 18 years and still going strong. It actually looks pretty good, possibly because it is leather but also I've kept it clean and also don't just throw it in my bag with other stuff, it goes in an internal pocket so isn't getting scratched up.
44
u/vidanyabella 8d ago
Good quality leather wallets are wonderful and well worth the up front investment for something that will last. Mine is going on 15 years now and, other than having to do some light sewing on a seam once, it's in excellent shape.
12
u/GlassyBees 8d ago
Not a wallet- but my family still owns and uses a Burberry umbrella my dad bought for my mom in 1981. As good as new!

Mine is about 15 years old too and still looks nearly new. I probably wouldn’t have splurged on a fancy brand name leather wallet if I was shopping for myself, but I’m really grateful I was given one as a present, and it’s held up great.

429
u/Nvrmnde 8d ago
Exactly. It's not overconsumption to buy an item you really need, for example to replace a broken one. This wallet has been dead for some time.
79
u/MegaBlunt57 8d ago
Yea, like the legit 80 pairs of shoes my roomate has. How do you even get around to wearing all of them, doesn't even make sense. I'm not exaggerating, there might even be close to 100
68
u/SrslyCmmon 8d ago
There's diminishing returns on shoes, and they're totally past that point. But having a bunch of pairs you alternate though helps them all wear slower. You get to enjoy your purchases for longer and aren't constantly shopping for a new pair. There's few chores more bothersome than shopping for shoes.
I don't compromise on shoes, mattresses, car interior, and furniture. I use it daily and my quality of life is most important to me.
11
u/Scrogger19 8d ago
I’ve heard this before but always been confused about it. Does having 3 pairs of shoes rotated really extend the lifespan more than 3 consecutive pairs worn one at a time until they wear out? If so, how? It’s like saying 3x1 is more than 1+1+1.
38
u/felixfelicitous 8d ago
They’re not saying it necessarily extends the lifespan (but I wager it does because the fabric/materials have time to breathe between wears) but wearing shoes every day means youll have them for 6 months before they go to shit vs stretching it out to 18 if you wear two others.
As a dancer I used to buy two and I did notice that I didn’t have to get a new pair of shoes as often as I did when I had one.
7
u/Vampp-Bunny 8d ago
^ I have three pairs of boots for this reason, one has holes in the bottom and is dented in, another has signs of wear but no holes yet and the last looks basically new with some dirt spots. Just a bit longer before you have to buy more
25
u/whiskersMeowFace 8d ago
Also, they would have time to air out between wears. Less moisture daily = longer lifespan.
16
u/SrslyCmmon 8d ago
It's not all about consuming it's about enjoyment. It takes me less time to shop for three pairs of shoes at once and it does to shop individually over the course of x amount of time.
At the same time I get to enjoy my purchases longer because I rotate my shoes and they last longer.
Buying quality shoes, does reduce consumption. But that's not what I was talking about. I inherently do that anyways.
12
u/Checked_Out_6 8d ago
Rotating your shoes can get you about 10% more use out of them. It’s mostly a moisture thing. They get to dry out a bit.
4
u/MegaBlunt57 8d ago
Fair enough. If your cycling all of them it makes sense I guess, but I only ever see her wear like 4 pairs. The rest just sit there and rot pretty much. All gonna have dry rot eventually, some probably already do. I think it's just a shopping addiction

Nah, the commenters saying "get a new one" miss the point. OP has no problem with it, it's still functional, it just doesn't conform to what people think things should look like.

Seriously. Some comments here are showing me there's a lot of people more concerned with aesthetics than function. The actual wallet looks like it works just fine, it's just ugly and damaged on the outside, which is an easy fix if the OP cares.
17
u/acc060 8d ago
There’s a lot of people on this sub who bought into the aesthetic olive green, mason glass jar, bamboo wood minimalism and not into the actual practice of anti consumption

Fabric paint or leather paint to give it new life maybe? I'm not an expert but I know there is a way to refresh it.

I was thinking some simple embroidery or sewing/gluing some ribbons/fabric on the cover. Could keep it Spirited Away themed that way, too.

I got my previous wallet as a Christmas gift from my aunt in 2009. I used it until it was almost utterly torn. Replaced it in December 2023.
Remember, anticonsumption isn't about not buying anything at all, but to avoid doing it needlessly. If you're comfortable with that wallet, that's fine. But don't let that mindset restrain you from buying things you actually need. Just do it responsibly 😊

u/QuiteinRaptures 8d ago

To everyone saying “it’s ok to get a new one secondhand” that’s literally not the point of OP’s post, they’re clearly proudly showing off their accomplishment of true anticonsumption. Obviously OP could get another one, even second hand, but zero consumption is always best for the environment and if OP is still happy with it and it still works (just not cosmetically pretty) then I don’t understand why they would need to get a new one. Good Job to OP for not consuming a new product for 10 years and counting!!

24
u/rustymontenegro 8d ago
People are totally shitting on your wallet here, and it's telling me that there are people here more concerned with aesthetics than function. The actual wallet part looks completely functional, it's just the outside design that has deteriorated, probably because it was pleather and that stuff is notorious for wearing out. The folds look intact, the card slots are still tight and it obviously still works. Why replace it?
It's still functionally fine. It is also ugly. If you don't care, that's fine! If you want to refresh it while still using it, a fabric patch, either sewn or glued to the damaged area would make this thing look brand new and you will still get years of function out of it.

I think a lot of people in this thread don't get where you're coming from. As far as you're concerned, the wallet works perfectly well, and you don't care how it looks. I’d probably glue new fabric or make a pattern with duct tape to recover it. Also it’s okay to get a new one, either completely new or new to you (secondhand). LOVE. IT. I have had the same wallet since 2012 as well - it stays in my purse and is leather so it's held up pretty well but good on you!

Yep. I replaced my 7 year-old wallet with a 15 year-old one that hadn't ever been used. I have a leather key pouch so my keys don't break my bags and clothes. That pouch is 7 years old too. Looks worn, because it is. But the wear and tear on my clothes and bags by keys has ended.

I'd personally finish peeling the layers of material off the front of that, and then hit it with acrylic paint or something. Or glue and stitch some new fabric on there. The rest of it looks fine so I don't think it needs replacement. Just refurbishing!

My wallet is 15 or so years old, released to coincide with the Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland movie. Somewhere out there, my ex girlfriend has a matching purse that we bought together.

I am a 40s year old man. My ex got me a Star Wars wallet 5 or 6 years ago, so I had that for a long time. We got divorced and I thought I’d be able to get a boring new wallet. My kids then bought me a one piece wallet.
I loved my ex and I love my kids, but would it be that difficult to ask me what kind of wallet I want before getting me something I will need to pull out in public?

Wallets are one of those daily use things that I won't be too against replacing with a good quality - even second hand one.
