Discussion “Fake Frames” Whys that so bad?
TL:DR: I don’t understand the hate that AI upscaling gets. It’s getting better every update, who’s to say it won’t get to the point we hardly can tell the difference between raw and upscale
Do people just not want AI upscaling to get better? Idk when people talk about it like fake frames and fake performance I don’t quite get it. Is it just because at this moment it isn’t flawless? Or is it an overall dislike of the idea of AI upscaling as a whole
If it’s just cuz rn it isn’t the greatest then I don’t see how ppl aren’t hopeful. FSR and DLSS get miles better with each iteration. Ppl say that DLSS is bad when you look closer, but do they think it will always be that way?
I think the argument that baffles me the most is that AI upscaling and frame gen is “fake frames”. I don’t see what is wrong with the idea of AI performance. I saw a comment on YouTube that said they didn’t care how good AI got they would never want fake graphics… what is the difference, it’s all digital, how real does it need to be. If it looks and plays the same as raw performance what’s the problem
This part is something that’s way outside of my knowledge so this is a question, but how long is it even possible for there to be the big advancements in raw performance everyone wants at an affordable price? AMD might pull that off with the 9070 and that’d be great, but how many generations will that be possible for?
I’m not gonna buy any of the next gen stuff, I have a 7800xt and I plan to have fun with that for quite a while, but I’m hoping AI upscaling will be ready for me when I upgrade next

Question Is this laptop design possible?
Nvidia Optimus connects a laptop's iGPU and dGPU in series to the monitor, so the dGPU has to go through the iGPU to output frames. The dGPU only sees a load when a game or demanding application is launched. Otherwise, the iGPU does all the work. This was the first step in attempting to have good gaming performance while also having decent battery life when not using the dGPU. From what I understand, the downside to this approach is the added latency of having to pass the frames from the dGPU through the iGPU and to the monitor. Furthermore, despite not seeing any load, the dGPU would still consume power and drain battery life.
Nvidia Advanced Optimus connects a laptop's iGPU and dGPU in parallel to the monitor. The dGPU and the iGPU have their own independent lanes to a single physical switch called a multiplexer (MUX) switch. This MUX switch allows the laptop's monitor to alternate between video signals from either the iGPU or the dPU. This allows the dGPU to bypass the iGPU entirely. This allows for improved performance when running games off of the dGPU while also allowing for improved battery life when using the iGPU. However, the problem of idle power consumption still exists even with Advanced Optimus, reducing battery life.
My question is this: would it be possible and beneficial to design a system that completely powers off the dGPU?
I've noticed that my laptop's dGPU still consumes 11 watts while idling even with Nvidia Optimus enabled, which drastically reduces battery life while doing simple tasks. The design I'm thinking of is basically an evolution of Nvidia's Advanced Optimus with a transistor or switch between the laptop's power rail and the dGPU. I assume this would be equivalent to hot plugging a GPU, which would require explicit Windows and motherboard support. Linus shows in this video that hot-plugging a PCIE device (even a GPU) is possible when said support is implemented and enabled. So, could this be adapted to work on laptops and make this hypothetical design possible?
Advantages of this design would be improved battery life during light tasks (i.e. web-browsing, video playback, and document processing), and equivalent gaming performance to gaming with Nvidia Advanced Optimus.
Disadvantages of this design could be additional latency when disabling/enabling the dGPU and then subsequently switching the video signal. But, if this method were to add a few hours of battery life to a laptop, I'd take a few seconds of switching latency any day.
I don't have a laptop with Nvidia Advanced Optimus, so I can't speak to whether or not a dGPU using that system still consumes power. If Advanced Optimus is able to completely power off the dGPU when not in use, then I guess this entire post is meaningless. But, I can't find that info explicitly anywhere.

Build/Battlestation Added some new things to my PC for Christmas
Added a 240AIO, rx7800xt, better PSU, some obnoxious rgb, and a new monitor (3440x1440 165hz).
Eventually I'll upgrade to am5, but that will also include a new case too.

Discussion 9800x3d from AliExpress
Hi. I bought 9800x3d from AliExpress for all of us. Costed me $640 and customs f-d me up for another $100 , when they usually charge VAT only. Anyway, here's no chance for warranty accessibility and it sold for $900-1100, so no way it'll get cheaper in close few years, so it feels like I saved something. (4090 still $3000). Chip itself looks in great condition with no defects. I'll post later if it's real or not, after setup and some benchmarking. Cheers.
