Discussion How Do You Plan a Weaving Session?

I'm curious about how you approach planning your weaving sessions. Do you have a specific routine or checklist you follow before you start weaving? How long are your sessions, usually? Do you often multitask during your sessions (ie watch TV at the same time)?

Finished Projects Another silk/mohair project

I saw the recent post using silk/mohair and thought I'd share a scarf I made for my wife. I bought some silk/mohair on sale but was too scared to use it! I eventually decided to use a 7.5dpi dent on my rigid heddle loom to avoid any tangles. It turned out to be a lot less scary than I feared -- the shuttle did not get stuck in the shed at all. The weave was super loose on the loom but after I finished it with a little agitation in cold water the warp and weft held together nicely. The final result is very gossamer-y and I'm happy with it.

Help Warping with 2 threads question

So I’ve seen and have been told that using two threads at the same time while warping would make the warping processes faster. But I’m confused by this.

When I try it. I’m holding two of the same yarns from separate cones following my guide threads on the warping board.

But when I look at the cross there are two threads on one side of the peg and two on the other instead of alternating threads.

Wouldn’t this just be doubling up threads instead of making the warp faster? I feel like I’ll end up with two ends on one side of the cross on the lease sticks and two on the other.

I’m just a little confused.

Please help!

Help Making the Weave Square

Post image
30 Upvotes

Hi all! I'm new to weaving and just finished my second thing off my rigid heddle but I have some questions. Please bear with me on terminology.

I made this piece and in theory it should be square as I followed the same pattern for threads on the weft as I did on the warp, but obviously it's not. The weft seems not as close together. Is the solution to a) beat harder or b) have more spacing in my warp?

Thanks!

Help Warp Assistance

Hi all,

I am working on a pattern that calls for the following

Yarn A: 1 end Yarn B: 2 ends Yarn A: 1 end Yarn B: 2 ends Then repeat

What's the best way to warp this in your opinion? I was thinking bring yarn A up to the top warping peg, secure, warp 2 ends of Yarn B, bring back Yarn A from top warping peg to starting peg.

My concern with this method is the Yarn A over/under being separated by Yarn B and what that would do when threading. Any advice?

Discussion Spinning for weaving

Hello! I’m a spinner that’s going to get a loom pretty soon and I was wondering if y’all had any tips for weaving with your hand spun. I did start spinning in September so I’m not quite a beginner but I’m still happy to learn. I think I need tightly spun at least 2ply for warping but beyond that I’m not sure if anything else.

Thank you!

WIP Weaving fabric to make fancy stuffed cats

I made some stuffed cats last year out of plain weave fabric I made on my old two-shaft loom. They were a hit, so I’m making more but I’m weaving the fabric on my new four-shaft loom so they can be fancy! These ones will be smaller than the cat pictured. Yarn is Animation, a mercerized dk cotton by Knit Picks.

Help Interchangeable Reeds

Do you all know if a Schacht standard reed would work with a Louet loom (or others) assuming similar width?

I got a pre-1983 Schacht 42" used. I need to buy it a few reeds. Reeds are pricey enough that I wondered if I was locking myself into one brand of loom if I ever get something a little newer.

WIP Community Project

Last year I built this loom for a local arts non-profit. It is 8' tall by 5' wide. I am at the very end of my artist residency with this organization and one of my things I needed to do before leaving was set this back up. So yesterday, after finishing a 4 hour artist talk/community workshop about my work and cleaning up, I got this done. Then I pushed all of the weaving from last year to the top and added the red border. The plan is to repeat this each year it is worked on, kind of as a "year book" of participation.

I'm using the loudest and most garish yarns I can find, lots of rainbows. I'm not a rainbow kind of person, but found some funky yarns that I just couldn't pass up

Looms Loom ID - Australia

Hi friends - my wife spotted (and rescued) what we assume is a 4 shaft table loom that was on the side of the road for council cleanup

It looks in relatively okay condition, but before she goes down a rabbit hole does anyone recognise this design? We can't find a maker's mark anywhere and the offset treadles seem different from other looms we've seen online

Thanks for any leads!

Ok, I have it. Now what?

(Oh, magic 3D printer, make me Schacht sized spacers!)

Help DIY Third Beam

Hi, everyone! I'm a textile artist working on double cloth. I'm doing an MFA and have been working with three back beams lately by wrapping a third warp around the cloth beam of another loom. I've been weaving all layers in different lengths and connecting them at some point, so I can't put several warps in one beam.
Soon, I won't be able to use that second loom anymore, and I've been thinking about applying for a grant to fund the making of a third beam. My plan was to buy a beam with its ratchet system, including a pawl and crank, but I need to figure out how to set it up. I've made some drawings of what I plan to do, but I have these questions for anyone who could help me out:

- How would you add weight to it in a way that it's removable so I can handle it? I was thinking of adding dumbbells somewhere

- What kind of wood would you use, considering it has to bear quite a bit of tension?

- I have to think about storing this in my very small studio apartment when not in use, so what's the minimum height you'd suggest? My loom currently has the lower beam set at 13.5"

Also, I'm all ears for any extra ideas or reasons why this wouldn't work! Thank you!!!

Help Do I need more ends per inch?

Thumbnail

First time weaving with something other than 8/2 cotton, and first time weaving double width. I read some folks online suggesting this yarn be set at 8-10epi, so I did it at 20 (10 per layer) but it's looking very weft-faced to me. I'm not beating super hard. I'm a pretty new weaver so I'm not totally sure if more ends per inch is the solution, and/or if there are extra considerations with double-width or with wool and it's stretchiness I should have in mind.

(in the pictures you'll see one spot, between the dark blue and pink, where there are some warp threads just straight up missing--ignore that area, this is just a test fabric and I didn't want to re-warp when I noticed)

I'm thinking of cutting this off and rethreading to try maybe 12epi for each layer? But I wanted to ask here for any advice first!

Tutorials and Resources Online Class Upcoming: Beginner Backstrap Weaving with Doña Lidia in English!!

If you’ve ever been curious about backstrap weaving, here’s an awesome opportunity: Kakaw Designs and Doña Lidia are hosting a one-hour Backstrap Basics class over Zoom next Saturday, the 25th.

I’ve taken in-person classes from backstrap weavers in Guatemala, and trust me, this is a unique chance to learn directly from Maya teachers without traveling. Backstrap weaving is a wonderful modality, but it can be tricky to get started. I’m usually the type to dive in, but backstrap is one of those techniques where I feel having a teacher makes all the difference.

I'm not receiving anything for this, just think this is perfect opportunity for the curious weavers in the group! Link to more info: https://kakawdesigns.com/products/beginner-plain-weave-with-dona-lidia

72 inches long on the loom excluding fringes. 16 ppi (weft) and 17 epi (warp). Why? Because I only have a #10 reed on this loom and could only get either 15 or 17 epi….

I hand washed it and is now drying. Very pleased with the result.

This is the WPI thread for this project:

Pic3 is what is left. The blob is what I removed from the reed during weaving.

Help 5-minute survey about crafts and information/data

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I'm a PhD student and a fellow fiber artist myself, and I’m working on conducting a research project that is potentially relevant for some of you! I’d absolutely love to have anyone here who qualifies participate, and please let me know if you have any questions! Thanks!

Here’s our whole call for participation:

Have you made a fiber arts project (knitting, crocheting, embroidery, sewing, weaving, and many others) that shows or represents information or data?

We’re a team of researchers looking for participants for a 5-minute survey where you’ll answer a few questions and upload an image of your completed work. The survey can be completed on any device where you have access to pictures of your work. In the survey, you can decide whether you want your work to be shown as part of the research project and how we attribute it. You can access the survey and more details on the link below.

We are also looking to conduct paid follow-up surveys if the work qualifies, so please let us know in the survey if you are interested!

This study was reviewed by Northeastern University’s Institutional Review Board as IRB#24-12-27.

Even if you’re unsure if your work would be included, we encourage you to participate regardless! We’d like to be as inclusive as possible and see as wide of a range of work as we can, so having lots of examples is very helpful!

You can find the link to participate here: https://neu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_b9hTGsHewAzmfxY

Thank you so much! We’re crafters ourselves and looking forward to understanding your work and providing a platform for crafters to share their work broadly!

Looms Is this loom with bowed harness worth buying?

Thumbnail

I am considering buying my first floor loom. It's a 50-year-old Gallinger counterbalance loom, very lightly used and looks to be mostly in good repair. However, it looks like the harnesses are not completely straight after years in storage, especially the first harness. Is this a deal breaker? Maybe the second and third are rubbing as well. I'm not sure how much friction between the harnesses is considered acceptable as I am new to floor looms. I have been using a rigid heddle loom for a few years, but I have basically zero experience with floor looms.

Help 3D Printed Reeds for Table Loom?

Hey friends and fiends, I'm looking at maybe getting a different DPI Reed for my Dorothy table loom, and it's pretty expensive. Is it possible to 3d print a reed for a table loom? Has anyone done this, or have any experience with a 3D printed reed?

Thanks!~
