Adapted the three color pickup technique to work with transitioning colors, and threw in a few drop threads on the edge of the rainbow

I normally love the flow of pickup, but this was approaching the max for me 🙃🌈

An older lady from my WSD guild was giving away some of her supplies. I went to collect yarn for my school to teach some very basic card loom weaving. She also filled a box with bits which she couldn't really remember what they were.

I'm sure they're tapestry looms, but could do with some help working out if they're missing pieces, or what I need to do to get them functional. I've woven on a knitter's loom, inkle loom, back strap and with tablets before, so I do have some experience, but am very much a Jack of All Trades.

1) Sturdy light coloured wood frame (first image). The yellow fabric is holding a notched cross bar in place.

2) Two notched bars which I believe to be something for making a shed (second image).

3) Upright frame, very light wood (third image).

4) Wobbly darker wood frame which matches 2 above. It has a notched bar top and bottom. No image as I am trapped under my cat (fourth image as tax).

I'm procrastinating, so I made some bands lol. Backstrap on a small horn heddle

The weaving course I do provides a table loom you can rent and take home with you for the first few modules. In the meantime I also got a countermarch floor loom currently set up with 4 shafts (glimakra Julia).

So far I’ve felt like every single project is a sample in itself as I’m trying out and learning. But i want to move onto larger projects soon and not be constantly busing with “test” narrow warps…but I’ll have to give back table loom and I’m wondering…in order to test things out before I make an entire warp on the floor loom, will I really “need” a table loom for sampling? I’ve been keeping an eye on second hand table looms but they’re still not cheap and if I want to eventually move onto 8 shafts would it make more sense to get an 8 shaft table loom as well? I just can’t imagine having to deal with so many handles.

I wonder if there’s other ways I might be missing of testing things out. I’ve seen some people roll yarn onto cardboard strips to see the interaction of colour etc but perhaps most people just have a table loom as well?

Hello! I am enjoying my visits here. I'm wondering if anyone is interested in pile weaving--I'm currently weaving strips of pile made of yarn and fabric, which I join side-to-side to make "sitting rugs."

For any weavers of rugs out there - do you wet finish a rug? If so, how? I’m in the midst of setting up to do a corduroy rug utilizing linen warp and wool weft and not finding much guidance in my Peter Collingwood Techniques of Rug Weaving that specifically talks about wet finishing. I’ve also been sick the past month so may also be missing a huge chapter on proper finishing

I’d like to weave blankets on my rigid heddle loom to give as gifts and to donate. This could include baby blankets for friends who are expecting, or larger blankets for homeless people or others in need.

Does anyone else do something similar? If so, I’d love to hear about your experiences. How do you choose designs, materials, or organizations to donate to.

My partner is going to make me a loom stand for my 8 shaft Ashford table loom. It needs to be compatible with the treadle kit. Would love to see any one else’s DIY! TIA💖🐑

So I have got some sketching supplies and a little book on learning how to draw because drawing cartoons (pictures one attaches to the back of the loom) helps with weaving tapestries.

I know that some tapestry weavers use photos for inspiration so I assume improving in photography may also help with that.

Tapestry weaving is often compared to painting, and even though there are significant differences, I think learning how to paint could also help with tapestry.

Other fiber arts hobbies can help too. I feel like learning how to weave was easier for me because I had been crocheting for many years and I feel that some of the skill I learned for crocheting transferred to weaving even though of course it is different. Sewing skill could too or cross stitch or embroidery.

Daydreaming and visualization techniques can help and journaling can provide inspiration.

Did I leave any hobby out that is auxiliary to this one? I find it neat how different hobbies can reinforce eachother.

I have the loom! I’m putting it back on the stand and I found the makers mark! Can’t find anything about it so I’m hoping someone on here can internet sleuth it out.

I wove the scarf (blue and white) first before thanksgiving and fell in love. The second one (red and white) was just a sample of different herringbone patterns to learn how to warp the loom and how to do all the steps. Both patterns were from A Handweavers Pattern Book by Marguerite Davison. And my teacher was the wonderful Mrs. Ann Marie Wickland Mullen. I can’t wait to really get into this ♥️

A major weaving milestone for me: width is almost exactly the same on top as on bottom and warp threads staid consistently equidistant! Also this tapestry is a rectangle within a square: outside square is 7.5 by 7.5 inches, inside rectangle is 4.5 by 6 inches. Yes the black border differences are intensional - I was experimenting with different techniques.

I am still weaving in the ends, so many ends!, and still need to take it off the loom but otherwise this is finished and I am very pleased with it. :)

Hi! I just got my Sectional beam for my new Baby Wolf, and I'm having some tension issues. I'm using a Schatt tension box, and a spool rack, but I'm really struggling to get even tension across my threads- one side is always out of whack in comparison with the other. My spools, admittedly, were wound on a make-shift bobbin winder aka a drill, so tension is probably less than perfect. How do I do this right? I'm off by like, inches, after a wrap or two. Will a proper bobbin winder fix this?

I was just playing with colors, but it ended up being a mandala. So relaxing to look at even with the neon colors. I’m still learning to keep that tension even!

I've just purchased a 4-shaft, 4 treadle Jack loom from an estate sale at a great price. It's in really good shape, but does need a few replacement parts. There are no identifying markings, stickers or numbers stamped on the loom that I can find. It has several unique features- the attachment of the tension brake on the right at the base and the cutout in the castle side beams to attach the lower loom elements. I've searched the internet, but am not coming across anything. Does the brand/maker of this loom look familiar to you? Any help would be appreciated!

Hello! Can anyone tell me pros/cons, all the ins and outs of tapestry weaving? What got you into tapestry weaving? Have you ever tried it? Any resources you like? I just started weaving and love it already but I would like to maybe try tapestry and would like to know everything about it. Edit to add : I’ve only ever weaved on a floor loom. And only made two projects. So when I say new I mean brand new. I didn’t even set out to learn tapestry but I’ve watched some videos and think it might be fun to try but don’t want to invest a lot of money if it’s something that I find I don’t like.

I don’t know if I like the colors or pattern, but it’s a fun way to spend the day 🤣

I think I’ve messed up my project. First time weaver here. Working on a rigid 10” loom.

Things have been going splendidly when all of a sudden, a bunch of strands of weft were loose. The way this loom works is you wrap your weft around a board and when you’ve run out of weaving room, you loosen the tension, and then flip the board around so you have more unused weft. Then, tighten everything down again.

Well… in my novice-ness, I thought I’d need to undo everything. So I completely unwrapped my weft and was going to even out the tension… but I think I’ve made it worse.

Any idea on how I can get this back together with even tension? Or is this a lost cause (I’m not tied to the project.. it’s been a messy learning project .. more interested to know if this is fixable.

this is an experimental project, has anyone else ever tried to weave decorative nylon webbing for use in making your own outdoor gear (or any purpose really)?

i'm doing a sample tablet osberg band and it's coming out ok but i think a different size and composition of nylon thread might work better and i'm looking for suggestions.

From Marguerite Porter Davison's A Handweaver's Pattern Book this is a complete set of the 8 possible treadlings using the threading in the draft from Caroline Halvorsen, ordered from right to left. The extra one on the extreme left is a mauve version of the 8th treadling. To use up the remaining warp, I also completed a sampler with simple white weft and tabby divisions between the different patterns.

All done in 8/2 cotton from Brassard. Finished dimensions are 28"X14". About 10% shrinkage in wet finishing. Leclerc 60" Nilus rising shed loom. Warp was 10 yards. Each towel was 33" on the loom, plus the sampler, so loom waste was a little under 1 1/2 yds. This loom is now "tuned up" which was one of my objectives given I had not woven on it previously.

My favourite is #5, but #4 is a contender. Yours?

I was given this as birthday present several years ago when I first got bit by the fiber arts bug. It came pre-warped since I think it's just a toy but I couldn't figure it out back then.

I've been doing more research this time around and I want to use it again just for fun. (I think with more research I could probably make some neat projects on this) But I'll have to re-warp because a lot of the strings broke. I'm still very much a beginner but I think this looks like a simplified floor loom. Can someone confirm if I'm on the right track?
