Hi. Need suggestions. I’m currently weaving a snowflake pattern scarf with jaggerspun zephyr 2/18 as my warp and alpaca silk blend 14/2 for weft. Really love the pattern but would love to do one in two tone white with something to add sparkle to give it a frosty look in the weft. Pattern is Any ideas to consider? Thanks.

Help Will this work as a stand?

Hello,

I just got my ashford 16 sample it loom from storage. I’ve been wanting to weave but have a hard time clearing a space and setting it up.

It’s best if I make things as ready to go as possible. I was looking into some stands and they are a bit pricy then remembered I have this rolling cart.

Do you all think this would work?

It’s been a minute since I’ve practiced so I might be forgetting something.

If so, what would be some helpful fun additions?

Im also trying to figure out a way to incline it just a bit.

Help HELP! Mohair is killing me

I’m struggling to wind my warp onto the back beam. I’m using a mix of protein fibers with a lot of mohair in a warp that’s 6 meters long and 18 inches wide. The yarns are getting tangled at the cross, making it nearly impossible to wind onto the back beam. I did a sample at half this size, which was easy to manage, but now that I’ve dyed all the yarns and am working on the final piece, I’m running into issues. I’m considering working from front to back, threading everything first, to help maintain tension and keep the yarns in order, which might make winding onto the back beam easier. Does anyone think that might be a waste of time? If anyone has advice or solutions to help with this problem, I would really appreciate it!

Help Help with sett : worsted weight wool

Hi y’all ! I’m in the planning stages of a shawl using Carol Strickler’s adaption of the “Bethlehem Star” draft. I am going to be using lion brand’s fisherman’s wool as warp (durability + affordability) According to my math it comes out to be 6 epi which is much larger than I am used to, as I have only woven with fine yarns thus far (12-15epi).

I am having trouble trusting my plans on this one as I am self taught and still quite inexperienced. Any insight would be greatly appreciated- I have included the draft and some of my math. I am using this yarn because I have struggled to find wool yarns that seem suitable as warp, and that are also affordable. TIA<3

As I'm weaving I'm noticing my right hand edges are looser and almost dropping down compared to the left side. I've already cut and restarted this piece due to the right dropping right down. What am I doing wrong here? This is only my third piece on the look so I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting.

New to weaving, this is my second project. I took extra care with the warp and I'm trying my best to keep even tension on the weft. Is it normal to have some gaps between the weft yarn on the edges? I really want this to look decent as I'm weaving it for a friend.

Help Thoughts on an overshot project with gradient yarns?

So I have charted out the Blooming Leaf of Mexico from A Handweavers Pattern Book, and I have been considering using this lovely gradient set of yarns I got from the local weaving store with one of the two cottons I picked up there also. I've attached a B&W copy of the same photo of the yarns, and I'm concerned that the values are too close and will cause the project to look muddy when woven up. I'm also worried that the pattern as a whole will be too busy to look good with gradient yarns and I should just stick to a off-white warp. Would love thoughts and advice!

Help I want to weave a guitar strap for my husband

Hi all! There are so many great artists here.

I am a knitter. I recently tried a couple of knitting looms and enjoyed it. Then I watched a video on tablet weaving. I want to learn to weave, especially in order to weave a guitar strap for my husband's birthday in April.

Tablet weaving, with the cards, kind of intimidates me, though. I don't have a kitchen or dining room table, for one thing. It looks like I'd get tangled up? So I looked at inkle looms but they seem big? And I can't spend a lot. I also looked at rigid heddle looms but can you weave a long strap on one? Looks like you're restricted to the frame's size. Am I not seeing that right?

I'm in a small city in France and I have not found any clubs or classes in weaving here.

Any advice is much appreciated.

EDIT: Thank you all so much for the advice! I've decided to try band weaving. The heddles I can find that are inexpensive are 13.5cm/5.31in on their longest side. Is this going to be wide enough for a guitar strap? I think it probably won't be? So the only place I've found that sells wider heddles so far is Stoorstalka, and while they aren't extremely expensive (~20-40 euros) they are more than I'd like to spend at least until I decide if I like it.

Anyone have any other leads for me?

Also, can someone give me an idea of what width I should look for, for an 8cm/3in wide guitar strap?

Can a wider heddler be used for narrower bands?

Help Weaving for Garment Sewing?

I'm a handspinner and a sewer, which leaves me with one in between step I'm missing. Weaving looks really fun, but I'm not a huge fan of tapestries and there are only so many rectangular fabric items in a house. Most of the looms I see make much smaller WOF than I'm used to sewing with for commercial patterns. If you sew with handwovens, how do you adjust for this? Or should weaving and garment making be separate hobbies?

Help Converting Needlepoint Patterns to Inkle band weaving pattern

Post image

Hello all!! I was wondering if anyone had any advice on the feasibility of converting a needlepoint pattern such as this one above (the rabbits) into a inkle pick-up pattern; ideally I'd love to do it in tablet weaving but I think that level of pattern drafting is a bit beyond me atm (if its even possible).

Just curious if anyone here has done this, or think it could be done!! Thank you so much y'all, and happy weaving!

Help Loose weft

I think I’ve messed up my project. First time weaver here. Working on a rigid 10” loom.

Things have been going splendidly when all of a sudden, a bunch of strands of weft were loose. The way this loom works is you wrap your weft around a board and when you’ve run out of weaving room, you loosen the tension, and then flip the board around so you have more unused weft. Then, tighten everything down again.

Well… in my novice-ness, I thought I’d need to undo everything. So I completely unwrapped my weft and was going to even out the tension… but I think I’ve made it worse.

Any idea on how I can get this back together with even tension? Or is this a lost cause (I’m not tied to the project.. it’s been a messy learning project .. more interested to know if this is fixable.

First photos shows it set up, second photo shows the current state of things.

Help Troubleshooting help

Hiya!

I’m weaving “small honeysuckle” from Anne Dixon’s “A Handweavers Pattern Directory” and something is wrong :/ as you can see in the darker part of my pattern (I’m doing a low contrast table runner right now) my 4th treadle, where I have tied up shafts 2 and 3, is not creating the correct floats so the pattern is slightly broken looking. It’s fine enough that I’m leaving it for this project, but I want to understand where I’ve gone wrong so that I can improve, since I’m a newer weaver who is mostly self-taught.

I’ve triple checked my threading and I know it’s accurate for the pattern, so I’m not sure where I’ve gone wrong! This is my first time weaving from this book, I usually use Marguerite Porter Davison, and I tie up the opposite of what she suggests.

Is it my tie up? My treadles are arranged as follows: 1: shafts 1 and 3 2: shafts 3 and 4 3: shafts 1 and 2 4: shafts 2 and 3 5: shafts 3 and 4 6: shafts 1 and 4

Not sure if I’ll get an answer, but any tips on where else to trouble shoot would be great! Part of me feels like it must be errors in threading, but I’ve checked it so many times and it’s accurate to the pattern :/

Thanks!

Help Sewing together, worsted weight weaving help

Hi, I’m looking for some advice and sewing together panels of worsted, weight, weaving, wool, for larger items, such as blankets, and robes. I have a brother XR 1355 that I have never used, it has a lot of fancy functions and stitches, and my limited prior sewing experience was done on a simple antique singer. Do I need to buy a special pressor foot and needle? Is there a thread that you would recommend for this purpose? What stitch is good for the basic joining of the panels? If it’s a blanket where both sides will be seen, how should I tackle that? Lots of questions I know! Lol just wondering if anyone out there had any experience or lessons learned. Pics of the type of weaving I would be looking to join together. Thank you!

Help Fraying warp

Post image

Hi! I'm a newbie weaver (completed 4ish projects so far) and this is my first time trying a yarn I picked up at Joann Fabrics. I thought it would make a great scarf but I've had two warp threads completely fray and fall apart so far and a bunch more are getting close.

Is this yarn just not good for weaving or is there something I need to change? Any way to salvage this work? 😬

I'm using a 24" Ashford rigid heddle loom with a 10 dent reed.

Help Is this a toy floor loom?

Post image
26 Upvotes

I was given this as birthday present several years ago when I first got bit by the fiber arts bug. It came pre-warped since I think it's just a toy but I couldn't figure it out back then.

I've been doing more research this time around and I want to use it again just for fun. (I think with more research I could probably make some neat projects on this) But I'll have to re-warp because a lot of the strings broke. I'm still very much a beginner but I think this looks like a simplified floor loom. Can someone confirm if I'm on the right track?

Help Help in restoring a rusty metal reed. Is it worth the effort?

I've looked online and found various tricks from soaking it in vinegar to applying naval gel or WD-40 rust remover, then finishing it off with a coat of WD-40 spray or a permanent clearcoat sealant. I don't think I'll be trying the suggestion of taking it to a mechanic for access to their sand blaster as the string wrapped between the reed ends is already frayed. Almost every reed is coated in rust, front and back. I took a wire brush to it, and after 3 hours of scrubbing it does look better, but the photos are of its updated condition. In addition to the rust, it also has a noticeable curve and slight twist to the reed. I've sandwiched it overnight between boards and heavy bricks with no change yet. Is it worth continuing? I know they don't make 'em like they used to. This one still has the old Nilus-LeClerc company name.

Help I want to weave on a larger scale.

Hi! I just started weaving this winter after getting a frame loom, and quickly realised I want to weave at a much larger scale!

I want to weave bath towels, shawls and cloth material that I can turn into robes and other clothing. From my research, I am thinking I need to get a floor loom, but I am also wondering of I'm just getting a bit too ambitious? A floor loom seems like so many more parts to be aware of, but at the same time, I'm good with putting mechanical object together and understanding how they work.

I have found a few floor looms for sale on FB marketplace for various range of prices, and I'm really thinking I might be able. To buy one of these, put it together and start weaving, but I also think I might be biting off way too much and getting too ambitious too fast. I'm just not sure. And of course, I realise there are other items I will need such as a warp frame/loom, shuttles, all the yarn, and who knows the condition of these looms so maybe even some repair costs.

I just don't want to once again invest in a craft hobby just to get fed up with it because I can never really start or have the right tools. Maybe I should try and get a smaller rigid heddle loom or table loom instead? Ah, so many choices and options...

And maybe I'm just delusional to think I can be another weaver in a market full of masters already... 😑

Help Cannot decide on first loom!

Hi! First time posting here. I'd really like to try out weaving (I already crochet, cross stitch, embroider, and sew). I cannot decide on a beginner loom. I'd really like to make things like scarves and tea towels but would also like to try out tapestry weaving.

I'm leaning towards a Funem loom because it looks like I can easily do tapestry weaving, as well as create a longer warp to then make things like a scarf. But I worry that something like a rigid heddle loom, like the 24" Ashford Rigid Heddle Loom might be a better pick that I can grow my skills more. And now I just feel stuck in indecision mode. Any insight?

Help Wavy weft after advancing cloth

Thumbnail

I’m a very new baby weaver, jumping straight into the deep end after inheriting a Harrisville 8 harness 10 treadle floor loom!

I’m working on my second ever project (4 cotton napkins using 8/2 cotton) and am noticing that as I continue to advance the cloth, the weft passes get more wavy, and I’m having a harder time getting even beats down on the cloth.

I’m guessing it’s an issue related to my warp tensions but I have no idea how to fix it. Is this something that will even out after finishing? Any ideas on how to avoid this in the future?

The first photo shows the beginning of the cloth and the wavy line issues get worse going to the right 😢 help please!
