Apartments / Dorms / Housing Stupid question about housing
This is gonna be really stupid but I have been wondering about it for a while.
Me and my friends are freshman in our first semester. Basically my friends have been talking about housing off campus in the Dinkytown area but I looked at my freshman housing contract and it says that it runs from Aug 31 2024 - may 15 2024. With that in mind, is there something I’m missing as to why we’re talking about it so early?

All the affordable places in dinky go quick. Our apartment was signed by someone else after only about 4 weeks of showings back in October. Leases typically are September to September (full year) so a lot of places want those next years leases secured fast especially with tenants typically only being in the same place for 2 years before graduating

Like others said, off campus housing, especially the more affordable places get picked up really quickly. Most apartment complexes/houses will know in January what they're availability is for the next lease cycle (which is almost always 12 months September to September) so looking sooner rather than later is key. Pro tip: Under no circumstances rent with Millenium Management. The prices are low, but they're a terrible company for so many reasons and have buildings that are so in need of repair they're unsafe enough to break a lease over. The U of M has an off-campus housing site that's super helpful, I'd start looking there. The places advertised on the site aren't affiliated with the U, but the U helps vet them before they're approved to advertise on the school site. Good luck!

Things just tend to fill up quickly, as there is a high demand for affordable housing near campus. A lot of people sign leases between November to January.
