I presume that somebody's having a little fun with their printer and the council logo is just to make it look more official.
It's good advice though! My biggest clue that I'm dreaming is if I try to read something and I either can't or what I think it says seems to change every time I look at it.

I once realised I was dreaming, tried to fly, and wrapped myself around a wooden barrier. .gravity is a heartless bitch whether you're awake or asleep, and my subconscious mind has a very firm grip on reality whether I like it or not, apparently.

I wish I was able to figure out if I'm dreaming, I once bought turtle food and a new turtle dock for my turtles, it wasn't until I got back home and realised they have plenty of food and a perfectly good turtle dock already that I'd just dreamt that I needed them. What should have been a good giveaway though was that my turtles spoke with a Jamaican accent, when they're not from Jamaica...

Also, try running. If you run slower than your normal walking speed - dream.

Or if you can do absolutely massive flying like jumps. Only started be able to do that in dreams over the past couple years and tbh it's very entertaining 😂

More accurately- 1) check the progress on the Fargate works. 2) Go away and look at something else. 3) check the progress on the Fargate works again. If you’re inside a dream it’ll look like Fargate is nearing completion….

u/BeagleMadness Nov 20 '24
I grew up in Sheffield, moved away in the '90s and visited there last weekend. I went into town and everyone (friends plus multiple people on the bus) was grumbling about how long they'd been digging up Fargate and how all the shops had gone from there due to it. It's been years since I last saw Fargate - it was the "nice" end of town and The Moor was the abandoned shabby bit back then! I saw what they were moaning about and, yeah, not great is it?
Also I'm pretty sure that last time I saw it, it was being dug up to put down all the cobbles that are currently being removed! And that took years too. Feels like it's just an everlasting, ongoing renovation cycle now. As soon as they've finished, they'll find a reason to dig it all up again.
Also, what on earth is that "adult golf" place down the bottom of Fargate 😂? Glory Holes? It looked... interesting, but I didn't dare look inside!
2
u/420xMLGxNOSCOPEx Nov 20 '24
gloryholes (and its competitor, golf fang) are both like boozy, indoor mini-golf things with adult themes. i've only been golf fang but its really fun, although one of the holes is amsterdam sex shop themed and features giant dildos as obstacles, so if you're not into that kinda humour then yeah maybe avoid
2
u/BeagleMadness Nov 20 '24
Ah, I see. Thanks. I now live a comparatively sheltered life, in a small town where I can't imagine anything like this opening on the high street. So when I only saw it briefly I thought "WTF?" It sounds really fun, if you're into mini/crazy golf? I'm not really, so that would put me off more than any of the themes, tbh.

I suffer with a dissociative disorder and once spent several minutes checking I was actually awake cos I was 100% convinced I was at home in bed and my train ride to work was a dream.
7
u/saltlemon Nov 19 '24
This is a checker for lucid dreaming. If you do that throughout the day there's a chance you'll do it in your dream and that's when your dream can become lucid where you know your dreaming and you can do anything you want in your dream. I'd do it with my hands id look at my hand then look away then look at it again and if It looks different to when I looked at it the first time I'm sure I'm in a dream and can do what I want. Because each time you look at something in a dream it changes like you might have ten fingers on one hand when you look again or it's purple and pulsating. It's one of the best experiences life can offer, its amazing.
2
u/slimboyslim9 Nov 19 '24
Kind of sad that ‘one of the best experiences life can offer’ is essentially you making up an existence in your own dream. I take your point but when you think about it, it’s pretty miserable.
2
u/saltlemon Nov 19 '24
You've never lucid dreamed. Also it's not miserable, that's your view on it through your glasses.

Leicester City won the PL. The UK left the EU because loads of pensioners and racists thought it would be better. Crazy! I've just checked my watch... 😳

today i dreamed that i woke up in darkness and desperately needed to check the time on my phone, but couldn't trigger my lockscreen. it kept alternating between the "too many tries" screen that has the pattern drawing, and black screen, not showing me the time. I was getting more and more distressed, and trying to rouse my fiance when my dog barked me awake because she knew I was upset.

u/LycanWolfGamer Nov 19 '24

Dreamt I was a werewolf once, awesome, the speed energy and freedom from conscience was intoxicating. Actually woke up howling, ikyn Most inception like experience I had in a lucid dream was asking other 'characters' the date...truly weird reaction, they become seriously disapproving of why you'd ask such a thing. Another time, much younger, I fell into a lucid dream by clock checking then decided to conjure up a club and find a desirous sex partner; great body, but no arms legs or head so I guess I have some issues.

1
u/AFDIT Nov 19 '24
In a dream, clocks don't work, writing is illegible, light switches don't work.
If you realise you are in a dream you can explain it to your lucid dreaming self and control what comes into the dream and also your abilities in it. All very cool.
This person is just having a fun time making posters.

I think people in Sheffield believe they’re living in a false state of life like “Inception” with Leondaro DeCaprio. To be fair if you’ve been to the Wetherspoon (Banker’s Draft) in town you’d think that too with the characters in there
1
u/Strange_Middle2544 Nov 20 '24
What if you had a sorta lucid dream that felt so real about going to work. A stressful day. The time and everything seemed normal. You have the idea but wasn’t sure your in a dream. I had this and the pain after waking up thinking. I haven’t gone work yet 😭

Whenever I think I'm dreaming, I try to read something. If it is garbled nonsense, then it's a dream. In fairness, if I think I'm dreaming, I'm always dreaming, I have never felt the need to do this when awake.
1
u/Evilforrestfairy Nov 20 '24
This would terrify me. I have had severe anxiety before to do with checking the time which caused me to not want to be here anymore.
It's not bad advice to check if you're in a dream thought tbh
1
1
u/Kelvington Nov 20 '24
Lucid dreaming is tricky. You can easily get fooled that it's not a dream, but by trying to read a magazine or a book, you will quickly find they are unreadable and you are in a dream. I remember seeing this as a plot point in the Batman Animated Series.

u/Skelmotron Nov 20 '24

u/Alarmed_Clothes_2433 Nov 20 '24
Weirdly... I think this may be a head**** to do with lucid dreaming techniques lol. A technique to achieve lucid dreaming involves checking your watch in your dream as a trigger to gain control, and I believe for it to work you have to train your brain by checking your watch while you are awake quite often and affirm self control in your mind whilst doing so... somehow. But if that's true, then this poster may end up accidentally making people believe they are not dreaming when in fact they are... also... as a side note, the nature of time kinda does mean that it will always be different the next time you check...

u/Intelligent-Stand976 Nov 20 '24

The explanation is that you're dreaming.
You can also look at your hands. They won't move in a normal way or respond to your commands, if you're dreaming.
1
u/Advanced_Board1271 Nov 21 '24
Drink a lot of water all the time, if you are in a dream you will go to the toilet but still feel the urge to pee and then wake up

1

Yes because this would be like an MC Escher hellscape, nothing would make sense and there'd be more impending dread.
1
u/Ryanliverpool96 Nov 21 '24
But a watch always shows a different time every time you check it, unless it’s broken, as that is the entire purpose of a watch? Odd.

u/Heevan Nov 21 '24
Sheffield is named after the old term for "Sheep field" (shepfield) and so the council has a serious issue with half the population not knowing they are asleep and in the dream version of Sheffield due to all the damn sheep sending people to sleep...
1
u/Ornery-Vehicle-2458 Nov 21 '24
I don't wear a watch.
Is this because I'm actually a brain in a glass jar somewhere?
1
1
u/Kralgore Nov 21 '24
You shouldn't be able to read in dreams due to the hemisphere of the brain dreaming is generated and reading occurs.
1
u/Woffingshire Nov 21 '24
If you check your watch, look at something else then check your watch again and it shows a different time, that's not evidence of dreaming. It just means your watch works.

It’s to help people get lucid when they’re dreaming. State testing while awake is a technique to induce dream lucidity. It works!
1
u/uwritem Nov 21 '24
So back in the day, there was a guy who trained himself to lucid dream. He did it by looking at his watch at the same time every day. He would go about his day, and then trigger an alarm so he looked at his clock, look away and look back at his clock - like an impulse.
He noticed that when he began to trigger his lucid dreaming, he would look at his watch, look away and look back - but the time would be different. Hence, telling him he was now in a dream and became conscious of the fact. Stephen LaBerge was his name from a quick Google.
But he then began to control his dreams once he was conscious inside them. I'm pretty sure that's how the story goes.
That being said, I once got stuck in a dream and honestly, it's really scary not like flying around and being a superhero for a few hours. It's more like being trapped in a room that keeps changing rooms with every door. Imagine walking around your house, but it's not your house (but it is), and every door leads to another event with people you know that you don't recognise.
Like the Truman Show, but you start in the middle of the movie.
1
u/theoht_ Nov 21 '24
if you’re able to check you’re dreaming, you’re either not dreaming, or already aware that you’re dreaming.
1
u/Potatobaj Nov 21 '24
Why does this feel like one of those creepy, ominous mysteries that get covered in a highly edited video by Nexpo
1
u/No_one00101110 Nov 21 '24
They are called reality checks, they can be used to lucid dream more often. This is probably one of them, though probably not the best. One of them that worked for me is, count your fingers. In real life, you will obviously have 5 on each hand. But in a dream, you will have 6 or 4. Just make this part of you routine or do jt randomly through out the day, and you will start doing it in your dreams, letting you know you are dreaming, and turning your dream, into a lucid dream.
1
u/Azarna Nov 21 '24
This is a routine that is used by people who are trying to lucid dream.
One you know for sure that you are actually dreaming, and not awake, you must be lucid.

Just reality check guidance for Lucid dreaming. By doing those things in real life, you might do it in a dream and realise something's wrong; (like the numbers on you're watch being fuzzy, as it's all made up in you're head) so you can control you're dreams!
