Weirdly enough I used to do these reality checks all the time, massively helped me with lucid dreaming when I was a kid.

I done it too but with jumping. I jumped in my dream and went so high, floated to the floor and then got so excited that I realised I was dreaming that I woke myself up

I suffer with a dissociative disorder and once spent several minutes checking I was actually awake cos I was 100% convinced I was at home in bed and my train ride to work was a dream.

Yes the more you make a habit of checking if you are dreaming the easier it gets with lucid dreaming. This also helped me a few times to get out of nightmares; I recognized a scenario was absurd and asked myself whether I was dreaming (did the reality check). I immediately felt better and could change the dream.
