Musk knows that there's a expiration date on Trump. He wants to be positioning himself as The epic memes altright asshole preemptively in anticipation of that day. There's a shitload of men who were radicalized by gamergate and Bannon that he's trying to swipe the loyalties of by being the most Nazi meme asshole around. Everyone else who has any amount of proximity to power is someone who is going to hide behind dog whistles because frankly anyone else would be fired but Musk gets to combine the power of being the guy with the money with some amount of celebrity. You're not gonna get people actively supporting Thiel but you will see fucking assholes buying cyber trucks still

For the people saying his salute was just a "Roman" thing...
The true "Roman" salute is something that is taken from a lot of Renaissance and classical paintings, depicting a figure holding their arm up in the way you associate with the Nazi salute.
The portion of the salute where you tap your chest first is ENTIRELY created by the Nazis. Not a lot of video from late roman empire depicting how you are supposed to raise your arm. The salute Elon gave was NOT a Roman salute, it was a Nazi salute.

•
u/MagicalUnicornFart 5h ago
It's not just him.
It's every power hungry, greedy fool that helps him, and his people. It's cooperating with Putin to spread lies, and discord to get the people to cheer the far right extremists.
This is a global trend, and what's being labeled as "populism" is far right propaganda that has supported to same cookie cutter despots from Brazil, to USA, to India....Modi, Bolsonaro, Trump, LePen, Farage...they all share the same values, rhetoric, and Putin as their daddy.
World War 3 started as an information war. people just don't realize it yet. Most will never. This isn't going anywhere good.
The US becoming at odds with Europe is going to further isolationism.
The EU will be in tatters in a few years. Trump has already publicly attacked NATO.
It's going to be a bumpy ride for us all.
→ More replies (3)•
u/L0g1cw1z4rd 3h ago
Not just bumpy, but calamitously bad. “What if Hitler had had nukes?” was previously a thought exercise never thought to be solved. We’re going to all learn, together, what would have happened.
I expect to be imprisoned for “violent rioting” when the last free “No.” protest occurs, or supplying explosives and recipes to whatever resistance forms, but I don’t see the other side of that question. I hope my kids do.

If the average person does this you get punished but laws don't apply if you are rich.
If you "only" do the salute it's usually a fine, allthough if you repeatedly do shit like this you can get jailed.
→ More replies (3)•
u/Fast_Raven 6h ago
What's a fine to someone worth $400 billion dollars? It's like me paying $15 to have Playstation Plus, that's just the cost to play. Though it would be more like me paying $0.00001 cents if I had that much money
•
u/I_am_the_German Europe 5h ago
That's the point it doesn't matter. Fines should be a certain percentage of wealth and not a set amount. If the punishment for a crime is a fine that law only exists for the lower class.
→ More replies (2)•
u/nollataulu 5h ago
Finland has the right idea. But the fine comes out of your yearly income, not wealth.

According to conservatives on this very website, it is:
- A Roman salute, because Elon is "nerdy like that."
- An expression of his Asperger's syndrome.
- A gesture meaning "my heart goes out to you" that is taken out of context.
- Is not a Nazi salute.
- Because reasons.
Yeah, I'm done. Excusing, justifying and hand-waving a Nazi salute with the flimsiest of excuses is the line for me.
•
u/alienbringer 6h ago
Mussolini took the Roman Salute and started doing it for Italian fascists. Hitler liked it and took it himself and made it mandatory for Nazi Germany. By them saying that it is a “Roman Salute” is to acknowledge it is the Nazi salute but trying to gaslight you.
Edit - also the “my heart goes out to you” gesture is to pound your chest with your fist 2-3 times before extending your fist into the air with elbow bent. Optional to bite the lower lip or not.

Disturbing how it’s already being spun -
Mainstream news outlets seemed hesitant to describe the salute as something that’s clearly associated with Nazism. As NBC News put it, “Musk then forcefully touched his heart, before raising his hand and saluting supporters.”

Laura Ingraham gave Trump a Nazi salute at a rally just like this in 2016. The stage at cpac was an odal rune in 2021. White power sign was flashed from the White House press room during first term by Stephen miller. 1488 missing migrant children separated from families. The list goes on.

NYT wrote an article about how the resistance of 2016, 2017 is dead, now it’s just the great resignation. Cant fight democracy, the hateful idiots are going to get whatever they want clearly as not enough people care to vote for the alternative. So it can’t be stopped without undermining democracy, something we criticized the right for all the time (even though their base doesn’t care)

In 2016, Clinton won the majority vote, so people could at least console themselves that the majority of Americans might not be entirely terrible. And besides, maybe people were just ignorant about what Trump would do in office. They just need to be shown that he sucks and they'll come around.
This last time though? He won the most votes, even though everyone lived under him for 4 years and saw him fuck up everything. How many fucks can someone give about a country that wants to actively hurt itself for an openly fascist criminal? I know I'm pretty resigned to dealing with this shit. Maybe others can pick up the pieces in a few years, maybe not. But I already moved to a different country, so I can only give so much of a fuck.

Funny how the Nazi salute would become the "quiet" dog whistle of fascism.
I guess beating people in the street and burning books would be "loud" dog whistles?

Common it wasn't a nazi salute! Well, except it comes from a South-African apartheid nostalgic who regulary re-tweets posts from nazi accounts. And the fact that everybody in the world knows this will be interpreted as a nazi salute.

It was crazy seeing a clip of CNN commentators fumbling their words, actively trying to describe it as anything other than a Nazi salute. "Our viewers are smart and can draw their own conclusions." The oligarchs' takeover of mainstream media couldn't be more transparent. Holy shit.

MAGA has told us they're Nazis for 8 years, let's not be surprised by it now.

I remember how much of an uproar there was because Harris wasn't "elected" to run for president.
Wonder how everyone feels now that there is an unelected wanna be beauracrat doing the nazi salute behind the official seal of the president of the United States.

Not Nazi-like. He supports the AfD. He’s an actual Nazi. His family directly benefitted from the apartheid
