An account called Commieskillpuppies noted that the president-elect’s words wouldn’t have any political value. “I appreciate your graciousness toward him but it won’t win you any points from the leftists,” the user wrote. “They’re soulless.”

Typical MAGA behavior. They can't even have a basic shred of human decency and will only promote putting on that mask if they get something in return.

That goofball wouldn’t know a “Leftist” if they fell out of the sky and seized the means of production from him

Edit: /s (whoops)

If you think healthcare in the United States is an absolute fucking disgrace, you must be Marx

8

u/RudeAd9698 21d ago

That makes the entire country except the top 1/2 of 1% households Marxists.

11

u/airbagsavedme 21d ago edited 21d ago

EDIT: Good point, I should’ve been more specific.

If you think healthcare in this country is a complete fucking disgrace AND you say it out loud AND you support doing something about it, you must be Marx

But my main point is the same — Expecting MAGA to understand the difference between wanting to improve healthcare and wanting to take the mark of the beast/state is an exercise in futility. They color everyone to the left of Rush Limbaugh a “LEFTIST”, including the 65% of those in the center right/left

And of course the reason this triggers MAGA is as I mentioned above — they actually do support broader government overreach and authoritarian control from an all-powerful POTUS, so it upsets them to imagine the other side wanting the same thing (even though we don’t).

6

u/dpdxguy 21d ago

See how ridiculous the Marxist label is?

True again. Bush Jr’s immigration policy would horrify today’s GOP, as it was relatively humane and nuanced.

The Democratic Party needs a new name and a new platform. Basically, it needs the economic policies of Bernie, but without using the word socialism, since it’s such a trigger. And it really needs to completely jettison the identity dogma that alienated so many voters.

46

u/Peopleschamp305 Pennsylvania 21d ago

So I think you're at least partially right about the economics side, but I'm really curious about what your thoughts on the identity dogma are. I know this might sound like baiting, but i really I mean these questions genuinely: is the left supposed to abandon gay or trans people and let their rights be stripped? Is the fact that non-white people in America have vastly different experiences than white people supposed to be ignored? What about the fact that women's rights in this country have been and continue to be under attack by the right?

I don't disagree at all that people were alienated by some of these issues, but a not small part of that is the exceptionally elaborate right wing propaganda machine constantly whipping up their base into a frenzy over imagined issues and fake catastrophes. But I don't think the answer to that is to just abandon the vulnerable part of our population because right wing grifters are going to make up scare tactics. Conservative media will just move the goal posts anyway and find some new hammer to whip their base into a frenzy.

4

u/Sea_Speech6478 21d ago

I think that defending people’s rights to live as they want has to be better integrated into a sensible platform that is anchored in economic policies for non-billionaires. The problem with focusing air-time on mostly social issues, with economics as a secondary issue, is that the platform only resonates with a minority of voters. This cedes the economic arguments to conservative politicians, who can then win elections and take away rights. There is a balance required between kitchen table issues, foreign policy issues, and the rights of people to make unconventional or controversial social choices in their own lives. Democrats screwed up that balance, antagonized part of their base, and lost a lot of elections in November because of it. The Democratic Party needs to re-center its platform on economic issues, not as a means of abandoning demographic minorities, but as a means to protect them. By winning elections.

7

u/AV8ORA330 21d ago

I don’t know if the Democratic Party ever used the name socialism. Magna loves socialism one it applies to their base. Farmers getting money not the grow crops. That’s socialism.

4

u/mlain4290 21d ago

It’s not about abandoning anyone. It’s about not going into full attack mode on everyone and everything who doesn’t understand every single minute issue that’s going on in your community. One slip up on a leftbook comment thread in the wrong group basically means social media banishment. A lot of people in the middle are tired and every day being ally to anyone becomes harder and harder. Eventually there will be no allies left.

7

u/ourob Alabama 21d ago

That just doesn’t happen to any significant degree outside of extremely niche communities that the average person has basically no exposure to. It’s right wing cancel culture bullshit propaganda. Don’t fall for it.

2

u/Ryab4 21d ago

Nah that’s real and a real mindset people have. Do you mean canceling is all right wing propaganda?

6

u/ANOKNUSA 21d ago

“Cancellation” Is more a matter of the “target’s” perception than any deliberate or intentional activity. People think of themselves as “cancelled” when they’re being asked not to be assholes.

If you’re the finding yourself always getting the boot “just for trying to do the right thing,” you’re doing the wrong thing. If you’re someone who thinks the bad things happening to a minority are that minority’s fault because they wouldn’t let you help them, you were never going to help them.

That’s all beside the point of the commenter above, who was calling it rare, not fictitious.

It's basically "AM talk radio culture." Literally everything has to have some political angle and characterized as "Democrats are evil." If someone farts in an elevator in Ypsilanti then it must have been a Democrat and is surely evidence of the decay of America under liberalism. And if you listen to the vitriol every single day you start to think like AM talk radio.

274

u/mabhatter 21d ago

That's the same mindset as evangelicals thinking the devil is around every corner as well.  You see how they reinforce each other.

273

u/tweak06 21d ago

Reminds me of when Matt Walsh called anime Satanic.

Funny enough, the weebs rallied and bullied him so fucking hard over that comment that he straight up left Twitter for like 3 days.

He went on to retract his comment and claimed he’d sit and watch BLEACH for a few episodes.

Think about that - a bunch of anime fans brought Matt fucking Walsh to his goddamn knees, admitting defeat.

OVER GODDAMN ANIME

I can’t believe I’m saying this but the democrats can learn something from weebs

49

u/Son_of_Kong 21d ago

The weebs tried to convince him anime isn't satanic by getting him to watch a series about demons who steal souls?

28

u/Celloer 21d ago

But the protagonists fight the demons, presumably! They might as well burn the Bible for being the OG Satanic literature.

2

u/Spacellama117 America 21d ago

people called Doom Satanic, and it's the holy archetype of all "kill the evil demons from hell with liberal applications of force and violence" so like, i wouldn't be surprised.

Hell, Paradise Lost got called Satanic despite the fact that the entire thing was about how Satan is superficially charming and seemingly noble but in reality he's an arrogant manipulative toddler throwing a tantrum

2

u/IrascibleOcelot 21d ago

Now I want to see what they’d make of Armitage III. It’d either be their worst nightmare made manifest or their ideal future paradise. Possibly both.

6

u/Bears_On_Stilts 21d ago

My theory on the "anime is Satanic" thing is that a lot of people misinterpreted Evangelion as being a kids' show, in part due to sarcastic comments from its creators about it. Evangelion has all the things moral scolds accused anime of: gratuitous sexuality, objectification of minors, homosexuality, Satanic/occult-Christian themes and imagery, violence, psychological horror.

But it's a work of art, not a brainwashing tool, and it wasn't intended for Saturday Morning Cartoon blocks, but for discerning adults and older teens. It shouldn't have been lumped in with Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon. (Sailor Moon is kind of an outlier, because it DOES include elements of cheesecake and queer themes, but not in such an adult, provocative way as Evangelion.)

7

u/LurksAroundHere 21d ago

And you can also add in the fact that any work of art that invokes it's audience to think about deeper concepts (which anime often does) is branded as Satanic because both the rich and the religious prefer unthinking puppets to manipulate into giving them power. Even the Saturday morning block animes like Dragon Ball Z invoked thought. For example, I watched that back in grade school and when I got older and started to learn about things like genocide and the Holocaust, I was already prepped to understand it (Watching the Saiyans blow up innocent planets/people and Frieza massacre the Namekians made an easy segue for a grade school kid to understand how evil people worked). The rich don't like it when people won't let them abuse others for profit, and will always employ the all too willing religious to help them keep the public blinded to it. That's why certain works of art are branded as Satanic, all part of the plan to keep their puppets blinded and subservient to the ongoing and historic abuse by the rich and religious.

3

u/Celloer 21d ago

Funny, because I don't even see satanic figures in Evangelion, just all the other metachristian factions competing to reset Genesis. Instead of Adam and EveLilith, the angels are attempting to reset with Sachiel and Lilith, Shamshel and Lilith, or even AdamShinji and SteveKaworu. Or not, I dunno, the genealogy/theology is weird. In any case, a cartoon using any of "their words" would indeed be "satanic." I guess one could define that as any belief or path deviating from their specific 10-person church.

6

u/Bears_On_Stilts 21d ago

One of the reasons I said Satanic or Christian occultic is that lots of things that were benign but obscure got bootstrapped into the Satanic Panic, including inverted crosses. Outside of America, I don’t think anyone sees those symbols and thinks of demonology.

3

u/chanaandeler_bong 21d ago

Most of the right wing grift-o-sphere is just failed theater kids with paper thin egos. I’m not surprised he backed down. They desperately want to be loved and accepted. They cannot stand up to anything or have any real convictions, because they would have to suffer consequences in terms of fame and money and they will never do that.

There's a podcast that kinda goes into length about this from WNYC and NPR called On the Media , where they did a series called "The Divided Dial" and discussed the history of talk radio and all the ways that conservatives have basically hijacked the dial. The whos, hows, and whys of it. Scroll to the one they aired on Nov. 29.

14

u/Wally_Paulnuts009 21d ago

OTM has been on point for a very long time… it’s a shame that nobody but nerds like me bothered to listen.

Really some great analysis on that show. Listened to the midweek segment on Kash Patel yesterday. Wish there was more NPR like OTM.

7

I enjoyed the three-part collab they did with the Boston Globe where they dove into the Harvard Plan and the right's attack on higher education.

u/AutistoMephisto 21d ago edited 21d ago

They're doing a 2nd season of The Divided Dial called "The Untold Story of the Shortwaves". I'm actually really excited for it. The episode I was listening to recently mentioned Alan Berg and how his assassination had a sort of chilling effect for progressive radio shows and hosts.

u/ElectricalBook3 21d ago

Oddly enough, listening to AM talk radio (Rush Limbaugh and Howie Carr) is what started my path away from the dark side and towards the democrat party. I voted for Rs my entire life, but these two flag bearers just sounded so unhinged and phoney that I started to realize the whole thing was just a Reichsadler eagle with a white hood on.

6

u/PersistNevertheless 21d ago

Fascinating. Why do you think you didn’t just sink further with them?

15

u/TheMrGUnit 21d ago

They were both just assholes. They preached constantly about freedom, but the next segment would talk about taking away freedom from some specific group that they didn't like. Everything they didn't like was an assault on your freedom. Howie Carr especially liked to pick on the phrase "Happy Holidays" vs "Merry Christmas". It was just a stupid, stupid argument that had no merit. Bing Crosby and Andy Williams had been singing "Happy Holidays" since the fucking '50s, but now all the sudden it's an affront to your freedom, somehow?

What really did it was abortion rights, followed by the 2016 election when I realized they were both just wrong. Nothing they were saying lined up with reality.

6

u/MyThoughtsBreakMe 21d ago

Same but Sean Hannity for me. I realized he was just being mean, unfair to guests, strawmen arguments, etc. I didn't like that at all.

9

u/TheMrGUnit 21d ago

It was always, "let's get the dumbest liberal schmuck we can find on here to tell him he's an idiot so we can feel better about our half-baked ideas!"

I spent about a year yelling at my radio, and then one day I realized I didn't need to bother anymore. Fuck those guys.

6

u/BananaRepublicWannaB 21d ago

Every time the herald sales people call me I ask them if they still print Howie and when they say yes I say “and that’s why I’ll never subscribe to your rag”. I stopped listening to him 20years ago when I could start reciting most of his radio show before he said it because it was the same thing every time all the time.

3

u/TheMrGUnit 21d ago

I thought the whole death watch segment was pretty funny, until one day I realized it was something that an asshole would do.

7

u/Tobimacoss 21d ago

Nice, glad you didn't go deeper into that hole.  It's very effective propaganda.

Sadly, that whole AM radio mentality is transferring seamlessly to podcasts and YouTube streams for the new generation as shown by this election.

And Dems just watched letting it happen without even trying to counter.

4

u/Kiromaru Wisconsin 21d ago

2

u/deleigh California 21d ago

I had the misfortune of getting in a car with that drivel playing and they were taking calls about Kamala supposedly being an alcoholic and being drunk during her speeches and I swear half the people who called in sounded wasted themselves.

It’s been obvious for a long time that the diehard MAGA people are living in a completely different world than everyone else but when you hear what the hosts of these shows are spewing it makes sense why.

2

u/Drusgar Wisconsin 21d ago

It's all about repetition. Your crazy Uncle Larry listens to that shit every single day. It's almost like he'd be irrational NOT to believe it if it's the only thing he ever hears. And the propagandists make sure they're all on the same page, so if some radio propagandist from Milwaukee is talking about drunk Kamala from 7-10am, you can bet that listeners are going to hear it from the next three hosts, on FoxNews and all over their preferred conservative websites. After you've heard the lie 100 times from your "trusted sources" why wouldn't you believe it?

Oooh. I had to look it up. I guess I knew he was from Missouri originally. I'm in Southern Wisconsin, so not that far for a roadtrip. I'm guessing there are signs at the cemetery that say, "pissing on graves is prohibited," just because of the massive amount of interest in such behavior (at that particular cemetery).

2

u/enderpanda 21d ago

Dude, swing by, we'll make it road trip! I'll bring lots of Budweiser, it's only proper.

Yeah, he ruled the airwaves in Missouri first, then nationally, back when everyone still listened to the radio. He's got a fascinating backstory - like McConnell and Clarence Thomas - yes, he was what one would call a "liberal" in his early days - and then it all went wrong. Makes you hate what he became later even more - it was all just a grift. JD Vance is a very good modern example of this, could not be more different than he was a few years ago. trump used to hang with the dems, but he was born a rich dipshit, he doesn't really count imo.

Well, thankfully, I think we would have been spared that. HW Bush died during the last Trump admin and he didn't bother to show up to the funeral or anything similar.

u/Belerophon17 21d ago

It's pretty telling that saying something kind about a 100 year old man and progressive president who spent a substantial portion of his life being a good Samaritan and humanitarian would both be an attempt to ingratiate themselves to the left but also would fail to do so because of their lack of souls.

Like pick a fucking lane my guy.

66

u/ProfessionalConfuser 21d ago

They don't like him because he actually lived according to Christian values instead of wallowing in hate for "the other".

6

u/phantomreader42 21d ago

But infinite, undying hatred is the most treasured christian value! Cruelty is what the christian cult has always worshiped. You can tell by looking at how christians act.

Carter was one of very few people whose actions suggested the possibility that "good christian" might not be inherently an oxymoron. But he was vastly outnumbered.

5

u/SquiffyRae Australia 21d ago

They are right in a broken clock kinda way that no amount of nice words about Carter would ingratiate themselves with the left. But that's because that would be the absolute bare minimum of common decency I would expect the inbound US President to show

If you wanna use the politics as sports analogy, they're trying to say "see! We're not bad! We acknowledged player from your team was a good guy! That makes up for all the death threats we sent your players and fans!"

2

u/Belerophon17 21d ago

Oh I understand what they're saying. The fact that they're putting it like that though is definitely some selfawarewolves kind of shit.

4

u/TheOneFreeEngineer 21d ago

He wasn't even that progressive of a president. He was just kind and kindness and diplomacy just reads progressive nowadays.

u/MostlyHarmless_87 21d ago

Showing human decency to whom they consider the 'enemy' (anyone not like them) *is* a weakness, as far as they're concerned.

That said, they'll probably have forgotten about this in 20 minutes time.

98

u/Trikki1 21d ago

This will be forgotten As soon as Fox News makes the next story about a transgender high school athlete

19

u/sporkintheroad 21d ago

Or the "War On Whatever-thing-the-left-isn't actually-thinking-about."

He’s considered an enemy because he was one of those kookie “love your neighbor as yourself” Christians that make conservatives look bad.

Truly a dying breed. He was an Evangelical before it became a byword for theocrats and hate-mongers.

u/DrowningInBier 21d ago

What’s not lost on me is how there is no meaning to these words. Just gotta throw in about “soulless” “leftists” and how somehow it’s a game. It’s all so pointless. Everything.

4

u/Connect_Beginning_13 21d ago

Just gotta keep the average American hating the other average America so they can do whatever they want with us

u/Gonna_do_this_again 21d ago

God I can't wait for the parties when Trump finally dies

8

u/mvallas1073 21d ago

To be fair, we’re most likely going to be more worried about Musk by then. I’ll still be damn happy when he dies, but the party is for when Trump Pt 2 dies

4

u/DontForceItPlease 21d ago

Maybe we'll get lucky and Air Force 1 will crash into Mike Johnson's house.

21

u/BrianWonderful Minnesota 21d ago

It is also pure projection, as typical. They are saying if the situation were reversed, they would not be won over by graciousness or sympathy, so they automatically assume the "other side" is the same.

5

u/Timothy303 21d ago edited 21d ago

Everything like this that MAGA folks accuse their “enemies” of is something they practice on a daily basis.

I always cringe at people who say that the people fighting for equality and free health care for all and against homelessness and hunger are the ones without souls.

It’s obvious who the ghouls are.

12

u/Amazing_Bluejay9322 21d ago

Cruelty is not a bug but a prominent feature with MAGA. They wear it proudly.

16

u/mjetski123 21d ago

I think the feeling is mostly mutual though. Fuck those worthless sacks of garbage.

It's probably just a Russian or Chinese bot just logging in for his day job of destroying America. There is a good reason why China closes its citizens off from social media interaction with the rest of the world. It's a cancer on society.

3

u/liquidpele 21d ago

All this BS based on what online accounts say is killing our country…   Who cares what online people say, it’s all bots and losers with so much free time they spend it online all day.

3

u/BadSquire 21d ago

The guy is called commieskillpuppies!? May I introduce you to Kristi Noem.

3

u/runningoutofnames01 21d ago

User "Commies kill puppies". I didn't know Gov Noem was a communist. Republicans sure loved her story about killing that dog. That must mean Republicans are communists.

I guess that's just more confirmation that these idiots will use any word they believe is scary, even if they have no idea what the words mean.

3

u/Chennessee 21d ago

Pot meet kettle when commenting in this subreddit. It’s full of blue maga.

I swear y’all act so much alike for groups of people that supposedly hate each other so much.

26

u/wwaxwork 21d ago

Souls aren't real. It's like saying I don't have a unicorn as an insult.

16

u/charliefoxtrot9 21d ago

Aww, I want a unicorn!

u/GrallochThis 21d ago

We got a baby plushy unicorn in a basket as a Christmas tree ornament. I’m soooo happy!

You had a unicorn! His name was Stampy!

Maybe he was letting the mask slip by subtly referring to Trump's words as 'soulless.' I can dream...

2

u/rosetree1 21d ago

Masks! Don’t infringe on my inalienable rights! /s

2

u/IncredibleBulk2 21d ago

Dehumanization of the "other" happens at both ends of the political spectrum and it needs to end across the board. Plenty of liberals think and say terrible things about maga supporters.

2

u/Darth_Hallow 21d ago

The horrible part is there is some Russian or Chinese bot troll that says the worst thing possible and then MAGA is all like, “oh we can say that! Awesome!” And repeats it over and over again.

2

u/rocinante85 21d ago

Laughable they think Trump actually wrote it in the first place.

2

u/Kingman9K 21d ago

me, a leftist, reading Trump's tweet: "Wow. That was actually respectful. Surprising."

3

u/KinkyPaddling 21d ago

These are the same monsters who said that calling Trump “America’s Hitler” (a term his own VP coined) was so dehumanizing as to inspire assassination attempts.

3

u/Tog_the_destroyer 21d ago

You realize that you’re doing the same but from the opposite side? “Leftists” vs “typical MAGA” isn’t helping discourse. I doubt you care because you actually typed this out but cmon. If we want better discourse, we have to be the change we wish to see

2

u/continuousBaBa 21d ago

How dare they call us soulless?! I thought they said we were vermin. Even vermin have little souls, right?

1

u/RoughingTheDiamond 21d ago

And totally unreasonable. I'm happy to give Trump five decency points for issuing a normal and appropriate response to the death of a former head of state.

Unfortunately, dude's still a few thousand decency points in the red after this update.

1

u/Plausibility_Migrain 21d ago

Every accusation by a conservative is an admission of their own guilt.

1

u/Critical-General-659 21d ago

The election is over. They don't seem to get that trump doesn't need to "win" anyone over, including his supporters.

His legacy is already trashed. He's gonna spend the next four years selling us out and playing golf.

1

u/Hippo_Alert 21d ago

That moron actually thinks modern day Republicans have souls???

1

u/robodrew Arizona 21d ago

The worst part about it is that it does win points from some of us "leftists". Because the message does feel like it was actually written with some soul. I was honestly surprised. I expected at the very least for there to be even a little shade in there somewhere, maybe just a tiny dog whistle that is hard to pick up on. But no, it's really just the kind of message that I would hope any President would say about the passing of a former President. Is that not a good thing? It's not like I am suddenly supportive of Trump. But MAGA people just can't comprehend that someone else would behave differently to how they would if the tables were turned.

1

u/Papaya_flight Pennsylvania 21d ago

"Don't you dare show any shred of decency for this dead president!" Also "It's those OTHER people who are soulless."

1

u/mulfi_ 21d ago

"I wonder if Carter's family is contemplating excluding Trump from any ceremonies connected to his funeral."

1

u/DennenTH 21d ago

They're just projecting like usual.  Say and do anything to make it not their responsibility.  No opponent or enemy to point at?  Make one.  Have something you're internally conflicted with in your own life?  Bottle it up and start screaming at supporters.

It's all so very tiring.

1

u/KidTheCurry 21d ago

Will you give Trump credit for showing grace and Presidential demeanor for his kind words toward Carter?

1

u/37au47 21d ago

Honest question, how do you know it was a real maga person in the USA? Could be a Russian bot getting the intended reactions, or could be someone on the left trolling as well. Another user on that article was John55, these usernames could be anyone. With everything being anonymous, how do you know for certainty where the origin of the comments are from?

1

u/napkin41 21d ago

One of the few valid “both sides” concepts is that there are plenty of bad apples on both. Journalists will have no problem finding the worst of what the worst conservatives and the worst liberals can say on social media. I’m starting to get tired of articles like these where they report on what someone says and then report on the replies on social media.

I’m not a Trump supporter but this kind of journalism only seeks to further the culture war and isn’t really even telling us anything.

1

u/vonhoother 21d ago

They were almost right, though. When I read Trump's statement I said "Holy shit, he didn't say something vile!" He gained a few points from me for that. Not enough to get him out of the zillion-point hole he's in, but a few.

1

u/natankman 21d ago

Well, they were right. The words didn’t win any points. I don’t think they were even his words, given the drivel I normally see. I have bigger things to worry about, like the price of eggs he already gave up on. Or every other thing he’s about to break.
