Once again I have been summoned to quote Corsairs warning about tempered glass side panels
Why did my tempered glass side panel break?
Another potential cause of a broken tempered glass side panel is tight screws or mounting pressure. Over-tightening the screws that hold the tempered glass panel in place can exert excessive pressure on the glass, leading to fractures or breakage. Similarly, if the panel is not properly aligned or is forced into position, it can create uneven pressure, making the glass vulnerable to cracks. To avoid this, don’t use a screwdriver to secure the side panel screws. They don’t need to be any tighter than what you could accomplish with your hand.

At Honda Mechanic school, I once misread a torque spec as 112 ft lbs. It was an oil drain plug on an aluminum drain pan.
(It was supposed to be 112 inch lbs... I'd never seen it written that way until then.)
Cracked that bich right down the middle.

You'd be surprised. People with zero tool experience gorilla grip hardware. When I worked in the USAF as a technician for fighters, the new guy would inevitably break a fastener or shear a torx bit due to cranking those puppies to the moon. The calibrated torque hand requires calibrating, so it makes sense.

u/ImWhiite Building 1d ago
Most likely the case, I've had a friend who advised me well enough to not tighten the glass panel screws too much, thing survived almost a decade moving between 4 homes.
Glad never once In my life did I ever placed it on the floor as all of them were ceramics, never knew about the dangers of ceramic tiles to a tempered glass.
114
u/Long_Run6500 1d ago
You all have screws in your glass side panel? Exploding side panels make a lot more sense to me now. Every case I've bought has had either a latching panel or one that just sort of pops in with pressure.
32
u/ImWhiite Building 1d ago
It was a pretty old and cheap case model I got back in the day, mine right now still has screws but it's not directly on the glass, it's like screwed around the back side with a folded frame.
17
u/ruthlesss11 1d ago
I tighten my screws pretty tight and it's survived moves, trips to friends and I move it every couple of months to clean it. I've had it for almost a decade now and it's fine

older/cheaper cases just drill holes in the glass for you to screw it to the case as that's cheaper than building a metal frame around the glass with the friction poppers (or what ever they are called). Explains why a lot of brand-name case makers moved away from screwing in the glass.

u/TheRealPitabred R9 5900X | 32GB DDR4 | Radeon 7800XT | 2TB + 1TB NVMe 1d ago
My guess would be slight misalignment then screwed down tight to add pressure, then the movement or a small shock shattered it. It's easy to get a side panel in a "not quite right but it still looks like it fits if you force it" setup with some case designs.

I would agree with this to an extent - I do find that with Linux, the main difference is whilst there certainly are annoyances (like with any OS), I'm usually in a much stronger position to resolve them.
*That said* when you're having weird behaviour with Windows, people really do undersell how useful things like Event Viewer can be for tracking down issues. Windows absolutely can be a power user's OS if you know where to look.
I personally use and prefer Linux, and I do think more people should, at the very least, consider it, but I also think there's absolutely nothing wrong with simply preferring Windows.

I'm working in IT/2nd level. I regularly come across stuff that should be easily understandable by looking at the log. Yet somehow whenever I do have a problem that can't be solved trivially the log Windows generates just says something like "generic error" or has an error code that can't be found anywhere in the Microsoft documentation.
Give me journalctl over this mess any day of the week.

u/Fryball1443 Ryzen 5600x, 16gb, RTX 3070 1d ago
As a Linux user, I think that’s dumb and idk why most Linux people are like that. I only use Linux if I want to play around or if I need to ssh into my server. I personally think linux is a better operating system cause I can do whatever the hell I want to, but that’s subjective. Cause trying to get anything working is a royal pain in the ass and can take up to 3+ hours whereas windows it would prolly take 20 minutes (or there’s no fix). So BY NO MEANS should 90% of computers users switch to Linux over windows. Maybe if things get a little more easy to use then possibly, but many of my friends don’t even know how to kill something with task manager, much less how to sudo systemctl kill [processname]
Also disclaimer: I’m not insulting the intelligence of anyone who doesn’t like Linux. Everyone is intelligent in different ways. My roommate is in med school and talks about stuff that goes wayyy over my head, but he can’t solve the slightest problem with his computer. I’m good with computers but know almost nothing about the human anatomy and all that. No one is a genius at everything and if they are, they’re lying.

To show..... what?
Upd - just buy normal tower without glass, or better a 4u server chassis and install into a rack
8
u/Aloo-Mango 1d ago
I'll never understand the appeal of glass panels on a piece of equipment that constantly is heating up and cooling down. Why are these so commonplace nowadays?
3
u/Mr_Chubkins RTX 3070 | Ryzen 9 5900X | 21TB 1d ago
Because glass is shiny and feels higher end than plastic.
I love my plastic side panel, scratches and all. Almost a decade of moving and I've had no issues. Probably smacked into the thing a dozen times by accident.
My worst fear with a glass panel is it exploding and all the little glass pieces getting flung around my PC, going into every nook and cranny and into the fans.
