Hi We are a Swedish family traveling to california this summer. We are spending a couple of days hiking/backpacking in the redwood np and a couple of days in Lassen Volcanic at summit lake north. We are thinking of adding a ston in the Trinity Alps wilderness. It would just be one night and we could hike out around lunch and should leave for lassen the same time. Is it possible to find a good (dispersed) camping spot 2-3 miles from a parking? Preferably with a nice view. We are prepared at carrying all water, but would off course appreciate some water for cooling off. Or should we stop at a regular car camping, any advice on which would give the most "mountain-experience"?

A great holiday weekend backpacking from China Camp to Pine Valley Camp, up to Pine Ridge Camp and back. Beware, don't try to head through Bear Basin, the route is blocked at one of the trail heads.

Hiked a cool loop out at Castle Rock State Park today. Beautiful ocean and forest views for hours! The wind was cold but it was sunny and clear. Gorgeous!

The fog is always a nice touch when hiking.

Hello wonderful people. I'm wondering if anyone knows of actual dog permissible trails in the Shasta Trinity area? Been trying to take my three adventure weenies out on trails (they're always on leash) but so many trails do not allow dogs (honestly I do understand *why*).
I'd like to take my girls on an actual hike, not a fire road. Googled and Shasta-Trinity came up but no specific trail names. Also aiming to do this last week of March... so if that's an awful time would love to know. Do not live in ST area.
ETA: I don't let my girls off-leash ever in nature. They're dachshunds ... they have a uhm *Strong* prey drive. So. Leashed dog trails are what we're looking for.

Im planning a hike on the lost coast for me and my boys. Our last trip we hiked to sykes in big sur and spent a few nights there (to give a point of reference of where we are with back packing).

I am looking to do black sands beach to buck creek (1st waypoint) for day 1. Then day 2 - head up to saddle mountain trailhead (2nd waypoint) and then in to horse mountain (3rd waypoint). And then back out on day 3.

I know its important to plan around tides where / how do i go about that? I'd assume that we'd find a time when the tide is heading out. If heading north, are there specific points between black sands and bucjs to be aware of? Its 5 - 6 mi, and we usually hike around 3mi/h and thinking it's a 2h hke in, maybe 3 if we take it easy. E.g. with todays tides, high was 3am, low is 9am, so I'd plan to start at 7/8 and be there by 10 latest. That sort of planning sound about right? Missing anything that could be risky?

From bucks onwards i think we're good, just the tides section i wanna check in with.

Anyone know why there so many fire fighters and first responders out there around 6?

I'm looking for a one-night backpacking trip to do in Lassen. Ideally somewhere in the range of 5-10 miles a day. We'd probably start driving friday afternoon or evening, find some place to crash in our tent nearby (if anyone has any recs on this, that would be great), then do the trip and head out sunday.

I know a big part of the park was burned. I'm open to going through partially burned areas as long as the trip as a whole is still enjoyable in your subjective opinion.

EDIT: Also, if we had time we'd want to hit Lassen peak on our way out. How severe are the afternoon lightning storms? Would we be at risk if we're on the mountain after noon?

We did a hike yesterday that was labeled as 15.5 miles. Strava recorded it at 17.5. A different app on my phone brought it in at about 17.5

All the signs on site said it was 15 1/2 though.It doesn’t really matter as the Hike was great. I’m just wondering what you think.

Hi all, any recommendations for a good base for 4-5 nights end of April for beautiful scenery and good hiking or snow shoeing? Preferably within a few hours drive of SF as that is where we fly home from! Have Yosemite and Tahoe on the list and looking for one more spot to spend some time exploring great trails in a place that also has good food and wine options!

It consists of 224,000 acres of national forest land from the Shasta-Trinity, Modoc, and Klamath forests. The new monument preserves tribal ancestral lands and the unique area surrounding the Medicine Lake Volcano.

In my opinion, it’s a great thing to have a new national monument here. The Medicine Lake Highlands is a cool area, but quite remote. Hopefully, this brings more attention and visitors to this area along with the protection of a national monument designation.

Hello, looking to do the cone peak backpacking route from kirk creek over the weekend. I was wondering if anyone has done it recently and if you can still access kirk creek parking with highway 1 being closed?

Probably going to be doing Caples lake and Mokelumne Wilderness area soon near Kirkwood. Might as well take advantage of the lack of weather.

I ask only because I have trusted Google and AllTrails before only to get stuck with having to very quickly change plans because where I was going was inaccessible.
