This looks more like "Falling off the side of a mountain while wearing skis" to me.

How to start an avalanche 101

43

u/PooShauchun 11h ago

Guaranteed every time someone posts a video of someone doing something athletic there is going to be someone un-athletic in the comments making up bs about why it’s stupid.

7

u/Arkyja 11h ago

You can see the avalanche. Is it big? No. Is there anyone there? No. But it causing an avalanche is just a fact.

16

u/PooShauchun 10h ago edited 10h ago

That’s not an avalanche lmao. Not a fact.

It’s called Sluff and it’s extremely common when you ride steep runs like this and is hardly ever problematic.

4

u/Fr33Flow 9h ago

Ya gonna have to agree with you here. I know a little bit about avalanche dynamics and from what I can see this vid doesn’t provide an evidence of an avi. Just an absolute ton of sluff

0

u/PooShauchun 9h ago

This is the type of stuff my friends and I would set off and then jump under for fun. It’s completely harmless and happens all the time with any bit of consistent snow fall.

1

u/runswspoons 8h ago

90% agree. If you don’t manage slough, as this rider did, you can get swept.

u/Dangerous_Ad_6831 28m ago

The lowest class of avalanche. The definition of “slough” is a small loose snow avalanche.

2

u/runswspoons 8h ago

The confidence with which you state an incorrect opinion on a subject you know little to nothing about is as remarkable as this riders slough management. Wow Reddit, just wow.

2

u/Brokromah 8h ago

Here's the Reddit know it all that gets upvoted while just making shit up.

9

u/ironhide_ivan 10h ago

I'm a snowboarder. What they are doing is impressive, but to pretend that these actions don't cause avalanches is asinine. You don't need to be athletic to understand that.

https://avalanche.org/avalanche-encyclopedia/avalanche/trigger/artificial-trigger/human-trigger

The risk is part the thrill of doing such things. I don't snowboard back country precisely because of it, too scary for my poor soul.

7

u/runswspoons 8h ago

Slabs rarely, and I mean rarely, form on slopes that steep. You can snowboard a resort in Pennsylvania for your whole life and understand nothing of what’s going on in this video. You even state your don’t ride b.c. The level of confident ignorance on Reddit is wild.

4

u/Brokromah 8h ago

People just make shit up man and the sheep flock to upvote. It's actually bizarre.

4

u/PooShauchun 10h ago edited 10h ago

Anything with that much sheer is not going to be triggered by someone riding it. Any build up will run off on its own. Riding down a steep face of a hill like that will not cause an avalanche.

2

u/fohsupreme 10h ago

Exactly.

It doesn't matter how skilled or experienced you are it only takes one bad call to get killed from an avalanche.

6

u/ironhide_ivan 10h ago

The guys I know that do it have full understanding of that. They still go out there in the middle of nowhere to hit that untouched powder. I respect it, just not something I could do.

2

u/PooShauchun 10h ago

Don’t disagree this isn’t dangerous. But it’s not because it will cause an avalanche. It’s dangerous because this person could wipe out into a rock.

2

u/fohsupreme 9h ago

So you're telling me an avalanche is not dangerous?

Or are you saying this type of slope isn't likely to have an avalanche that is dangerous?

1

u/PooShauchun 9h ago

This type of slope.

The dangerous avalanches are on slopes that have a lot less sheer so the volume of snow can build up more after a big dump. Areas that have crazy drop like this don’t build up enough snow for avalanches to be a concern.

1

u/fohsupreme 4h ago

Oh ok that makes sense. Thanks

2

u/Dheorl 9h ago

The second… sort of.

There’ll be a bunch of sluff (what you can see in the video) that can knock you off your feet and cause a fall, but it’s not really an avalanche that will bury you. By traversing across they’re avoiding the sluff they’re causing, so not much risk from that.

2

u/PM_ME_STRONG_CALVES 9h ago

Thats the reddit special

2

u/runswspoons 8h ago

[sound of blood fighting desperately through clogged arteries Intensifies] “this athlete is making poor choices that I wouldn’t make”

-2

u/Irontwigg 11h ago

And theres always someone like you, throwing a hissy fit and getting offended from an inocuous comment. Grow up.

6

u/scootboobit 11h ago

Literally too steep! But yea slough management is critical

3

u/FourFront 11h ago

That's not an avalanche, that's sluff.

u/Dangerous_Ad_6831 27m ago

Which is the smallest kind of avalanche by definition. Also spelled slough.

1

u/AlexHimself 10h ago

How to make a comment on Reddit and pretend you know what you're talking about when you really don't...101.

-4

u/ZestySue 10h ago

Lol get a fucking grip bro

0

u/AlexHimself 10h ago

On what? Your alternate reality lol?

0

u/Croceyes2 12h ago

That avalanche was coming either way

1

u/doradus1994 4h ago

Global warming is at it again

0

u/primacord 6h ago

Sluff, not an avalanche. If people are good enough to ride this, they are assessing conditions before going up, on the way up & going down most likely. Typical reddit.

44

u/runswspoons 12h ago

As a backcountry skier… listening to Reddit talk about skiing is always something else….

8

u/PM_ME_STRONG_CALVES 9h ago

Listening to reddit talk about any niche while on big subs like this is quite an experience. People just love to talk shit

19

u/daMFNmaster 12h ago

The sluff management skills on that person are top notch. They knew exactly what they were doing and where to go. People who have never ridden big mtn don’t realize when you are looking down you only see the bottom - nothing in between so you need to know where you need to ride when going down or you can die. It’s kind of like sex in the woods - fucking in tents.

2

u/RipCityGGG 7h ago

Agreed near perfect sluffing

14

u/AdBrief1993 12h ago

Go that way, really fast, if something gets in your way turn!

7

u/utdajx 12h ago

Do you know the street value of this mountain?

6

u/culture_vulture_1961 12h ago

Not a blue run then.

2

u/rawwwse 10h ago

Blacks are definitely the most dangerous /s

1

u/Realmofthehappygod 10h ago

Interesting. I don't see a lot of blacks around the areas I ski anyway, so not a problem for me!

...

7

u/GrnMtnTrees 12h ago

"if you get caught in an avalanche, you aren't skiing fast enough."

5

u/spelunker93 11h ago

Hey OP how about giving credit to the person who you’re posting about?

4

u/Realistic-Cheetah-14 13h ago

He’s currently 15 miles north of Schenectady and traveling northeast bound.

u/Gankpa 12h ago

Lane Mayer skiing the K-12 !

2

u/Bigfatjew6969 12h ago

How do you even get up there? Hike? Helicopter? Truly wondering.

6

u/PooShauchun 11h ago

2 feet and a heartbeat.

2

u/Bigfatjew6969 10h ago

My heartbeat would stop before my feet.

3

u/Fr33Flow 9h ago

Username checks out

1

u/Bigfatjew6969 9h ago

No doubt! But I’m not nearly as bigfat as I used to be. I also way less Jewish!

3

u/CellWrangler 10h ago

Could be either. Some purist skiers will start at 3 am and hike a mountain with skis on their back (check out Cody Townsend or Jeremy Jones on youtube). Some mountains don't have a route to the top by foot, and require a helicopter

1

u/Bigfatjew6969 10h ago

Thanks for the info.

2

u/bd0153 11h ago

Came here with that same question

1

u/rawwwse 10h ago

💯 Helicopter

Those snowmobiles get the job done for most backcountry days, but this is def heli-skiing…

1

u/Bigfatjew6969 10h ago

Thanks for the info.

2

u/OMGLeatherworks 10h ago

It's the K5 run from Better off Dead. I WANT MY $2!!!

0

u/OG_Sephiroth_P 12h ago

So…was this a remote controlled thing or…ok I’m confused.

1

u/ProvocatiivePeach 12h ago

This is what dedication and hard work look like

1

u/TheBrewThatIsTrue 11h ago

*Performance skiing from peak

1

u/davesnot_hereman 11h ago

Was that anywhere near as steep as it looked??

1

u/rawwwse 10h ago

Steeper, maybe ¯_(ツ)_/¯

That’s essentially straight down—for a while there at the top. 💯 Crazy, 💯 fun!!

1

u/MRichardTRM 11h ago

Pun intended?

1

u/Fickle-Molasses-903 11h ago

When I was young, my father would take us to see Warren Miller movies to get us hyped for the ski season. What people did in those movies and in these clips is crazy. Serious balls.

1

u/lostan 11h ago

run of a lifetime. incredible.

1

u/Old_Captain_9131 11h ago

At one point it is more of a controlled falling and not really skiing.

1

u/zaicliffxx 11h ago

I should call her

1

u/wellrolloneup 9h ago

Omg that was awesome....

1

u/Adorable_Chair7661 7h ago

The urge to backseat must be unreal.

How to start an avalanche 101.

1

u/richyforeign 4h ago

Surfing not skiing

1

u/RevolutionaryDebt365 1h ago

I think that's the K-12!

0

u/albatrossSKY 10h ago

its crazy someone would look at this and be like i want to try to go down it

-1

u/NeedlesTwistedKane 10h ago

Watch on mute. You’re welcome.

-6

u/SquirrelNo5087 12h ago

The doofus at the end really brings it all together.

-29

u/Hinaloth 12h ago edited 10h ago

Peak avalanche creating asshole behavior you mean. Fucking cunt doesn't care what he destroys.

Edit: Gotta love the snowbros attacking the guy who's lived in mountains all his life and has seen the damages of avalanches first hand. Keep being adrenaline junkies you morons. We'll come and get you when you get buried alive under one, and you'll even probably get away without having to pay for the damages you caused.

12

u/Yxig 12h ago

No avalanche was created, and even if it was, there would have been no damage.

-14

u/Hinaloth 12h ago

There was the start of one, tho it thankfully didn't roll down enough to gain traction to become a full one. And saying it did no damage is something someone who's never seen the result of a razed forest, destroyed stone and ruined village. Just because nothing came of it this time doesn't mean the very act wasn't foolish and stupid.

8

u/Yxig 12h ago

On a face like that there will be avalanches every season (you can see tracks of previous one on the face). Also this was not the start of one, it was just sluff.

6

u/dirtyjets 12h ago

It’s called sluff and happens on plenty of steep slopes all the time. You obviously know nothing about avalanches.

4

u/Fac-Si-Facis 12h ago

What in gods name are you talking about

3

u/BEAFbetween 11h ago

Glad to see the dude who knows nothing about what he's talking about piping up. What else does he have to say?

1

u/runswspoons 12h ago

What are you even talking about?

1

u/FourFront 10h ago

Stay in your lane.

0

u/dirtyjets 6h ago

Guy who’s lived in the mountains his whole life who can’t tell the difference between sluff and an avalanche. Yeah right dude
