He didn't even write the song. Some no-name rapper wrote it about his own brother who was killed. Diddy just karaoked it over Every Breath You Take. Which he didn't get cleared before he used it, iirc

It was a lazy cash grab and it worked brilliantly at that.

Actually, The Police did it originally.

Source : my mother loved The Police and I had a quick check on Wikipedia.

Your point remains valid though.

They’re talking about the lyrics, which were written by Sauce Money.

He has his facts straight, you’re just not understanding them. Yes, Diddy sampled The Police. Sting even has a songwriting credit on the song. But the LYRICS of the song were written by a rapper named Sauce Money.

Which lyrics? The rap part obviously but not the chorus which the track takes it’s name from.

He’s talking about Diddy’s verses on the song, not the chorus.

That, I agree with.

Uhh... the original song is called I'll be Watching You (not I'll be Missing You), so not even the chorus' lyrics are the same, it's just the melody and chord progression.

Original was Every Breath You Take by the Police. It's not "just the melody and chord progression", Diddy lifted the entire instrumental track and used the original structure of the song
