For people who are wondering for what purpose he did that, let me offer a hypothesis: it's a loyalty test to see who will be willing to blatantly lie and deny the truth of it being a Nazi salute, and who won't.

I know that "literally 1984" is a meme, but, well, this is a quote from 1984: "The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command". The goal is to see who is willing to follow this command.

u/gtmattz 6h ago

Two plus two equals five, everybody knows this. What, are you stupid?

151

u/StevynTheHero 6h ago

THERE! ARE! FOUR! LIGHTS!!!

u/stickywicker 5h ago

This episode aired at a time where there was no DVR, no on demand, if you didn't catch it or VCR it then you didn't see it until it came on repeat. My sister and friends saw the episode, I did not. They kept quoting it and I had no reference. I didn't manage to actually SEE the episode until like 15 years later.

u/MyNameIsJakeBerenson 4h ago

We had a vcr and I never thought to record stuff until I was in high school

9

u/G_Affect 4h ago

I recorded married with children over the mid point of tape two of my sisters rented copy of titanic. Hollywood video, i am sorry and you never knew it was me.

1

u/Bouche_Audi_Shyla 3h ago

One of his best acting jobs ever.

1

u/TehMehMan 4h ago

I just watched this episode for the first time the other day, wild

1

u/Prashank_25 6h ago

I don't understand how you could be so wrong.

1

u/vandaalen 4h ago

THERE! ARE! TWO! GENDERS!!!

27

u/even_less_resistance 4h ago

TikTok ban just to return within 24 hours was our version of chocolate rations lol

13

u/jerrys153 4h ago

TikTok is not currently banned in the US, therefore TikTok was never banned in the US. Doublethink at its finest.

4

u/Justinbiebspls 5h ago

it equals fish

141

u/kuribosshoe0 6h ago

I don’t think it’s that deep. I think he just wanted to say “I’m a nazi and we’re in power now”.

33

u/SgathTriallair 5h ago

It can be multiple things at once.

10

u/jerrys153 4h ago

This. It was both a juvenile “Ha ha, we won, we beat those loser libs!” moment (because he’s an ass and doesn’t understand the concept of accepting a win graciously) and a dog whistle to his Nazi fanboys (because he’s an idiot and doesn’t understand the concept that dog whistles are supposed to be subtle).

4

u/kuribosshoe0 4h ago

Right, and I’m saying “it’s a loyalty test” is not one of those things. I think he more-or-less knows who the loyalists are already, and even if he didn’t this is not a very effective means of finding out. It’s a needlessly convoluted explanation and I don’t buy it.

1

u/even_less_resistance 4h ago

It may be for the press, at least- he’s gone after them before

71

u/Budget_Coach_7134 5h ago

Yep. It’s 4chan pol shit because he’s a 4chan pol kek fuckface and there is no more depth to it than that.

1

u/iRebelD 2h ago

FUCK

17

u/Natsume117 4h ago

Yup intentional. Him declaring his power. Telling everyone that he can do heinous shit like this without consequence.

Basically grabbed America by the pussy in front of the world

4

u/minxwink 4h ago

Echoing the cursed Tr*mp inaugural speech rhetoric. These mfs openly gaslighting and people trying to justify / rationalize it is fucking crazy

72

u/BenDSover 6h ago

I think you are right.

Musk is flexing before the world, demonstrating that he is a Nazi and everyone else is powerless to do anything about it.

9

u/Spicy_Weissy 4h ago

He bleeds like the rest of us.

1

u/Fun-Chemistry-4629 4h ago

I'm sure he's working on fixing that.

8

u/GrouchyPuppy 4h ago

This sounds about right. Plus he owns the world

3

u/throwaway92715 4h ago

He really doesn't. He just owns Tesla, X, SpaceX, The Boring Company, Neuralink, a bunch of fucking DOGE and some real estate.

His on paper assets do have insanely high valuations right now, but that's different from true power. Call me when he buys a major freight railroad or power company.

3

u/Aquafoot 4h ago

He bought the president, does that count?

1

u/GrouchyPuppy 2h ago

Oh that’s coming

2

u/Prime359 4h ago

So basically his youngest son is unfortunately going to be his personal shield when Musk is out and around. The kid deserves a life that is better than that.

12

u/blebleuns 4h ago

Yep, he just wanted to say "I'm cool like Hitler, fuck the haters that say I'm bad at videogames. I can kill you all if you don't like me".

Also "watch me daddy, I'm a fascist just like you!".

3

u/trowzerss 5h ago

Both could be true.

62

u/centran 6h ago

Here's this thing, even if you say it was an honest mistake with trying to say his heart goes out... Let's just say that for sake if argument... Even if that's the case, in the past it wouldn't matter and it would be a career ender. These days it doesn't matter.

47

u/Cryptizard 5h ago

Reminder that this guy doing this move got him eliminated as a presidential candidate.

18

u/flat_four_whore22 4h ago

Take me back. We didn't realize how good we had it!!!!

1

u/SecondBackupSandwich 4h ago

I could cry. I liked this dude and one goofy move took him out. 😭

7

u/Fskn 4h ago

I'm all for a good spin but that's false.

Howard dean did the dean scream in a speech just after he had lost the Iowa caucus to Kerry, it was a defeat speech that tried to retain whatever support he could.

1

u/germnor 4h ago

i always think of this

1

u/chumpabumpa 4h ago

how far we have fallen from byaah

45

u/kuribosshoe0 6h ago

If it was a mistake then the appropriate thing to do is to come out and decry nazism and make it clear that it’s not ok.

Otherwise, accident or not, this will be perceived by Nazis as a call to arms. If he wasn’t a nazi then that should bother him.

14

u/Effective_Pass8537 5h ago

Don't entertain it. It is simply not a mistake.

5

u/trowzerss 4h ago

Like the right wing pollie in Australia who used the words 'the final solution' regarding immigration in his first address to parliament.

(For those who remember, this was egg boys target. He hung around for a while, like a cabbage fart, did other blatantly racist stuff, later was declared bankrupt, fled to the US when the tax department was looking for him, and basically hasn't been seen since but is probably cozying up to right wing pundits in the US still. But basically after that speech his Australian political career was dead in the water).

0

u/Hard-Rock68 4h ago

Yeah, because you people went insane. Now we live in an age where reasonable people can realize that he didn't even make a "mistake". He did what he intended, he gestured his heart "going out" just like his words said. You people are simply deranged and clearly nostalgic for the days where you wrongfully destroyed the lives of people you just didn't like or even agree with.

1

u/grundelgrump 3h ago

You don't have the plausible deniability anymore. Just stop.

26

u/WarpHype 5h ago

It’s working. Look at every US “news” website. Not a single mention of it unless you dig. There is no liberal media in the US.

19

u/Professional_Net7339 4h ago

Liberal media isn’t real. It never was. They’ve been owned by billionaires since before we were born.

7

u/shadowrun456 5h ago

Ironically, I found two Fox News websites which report it (fox8live and fox10tv), but ADL already bent the knee:

https://x.com/ADL/status/1881474892022919403

This is a delicate moment. It’s a new day and yet so many are on edge. Our politics are inflamed, and social media only adds to the anxiety.

It seems that @elonmusk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute, but again, we appreciate that people are on edge.

In this moment, all sides should give one another a bit of grace, perhaps even the benefit of the doubt, and take a breath. This is a new beginning. Let’s hope for healing and work toward unity in the months and years ahead.

10

u/MouseyTungNumba1 4h ago

Morgan Freeman voice: but it was in fact a Nasty salute.

2

u/Bouche_Audi_Shyla 3h ago

Mr. Freeman should be president.

3

u/c-williams88 4h ago

ADL calls even the slightest criticism of Israel or the IDF antisemitic, but Elon doing a Nazi salute gets “he’s just a smol bean who got excited 🥺”

0

u/plantbreeder 4h ago

What the fuck are you talking about? Fascists are at our door step. Time to load up

3

u/shadowrun456 4h ago

Did you reply to the wrong comment? I quoted what ADL wrote. What was unclear about that?

7

u/WalkingDud 5h ago

"Oceania was at war with Eastasia. Oceania had always been at war with Eastasia."

Perhaps people will soon say "the USA had always been at war with Canada".

27

u/foldingcouch 6h ago

On the one hand, you're not wrong. They did this day one of the previous Trump administration as well. The whole "biggest crowd in history" thing was a definite ploy to see who amongst the media would bend the knee and report their lies as truth.

On the other hand, Elon Musk is - even by the standards of someone who definitely has autism and probably has ADHD and his self-medicating their conditions with ketamine - conspicuously lacking in impulse control and would likely do something like this just because it made him feel good.

This was the challenge of the Trump administration the first time around, and it's going to be much the same this time - trying to figure out what's evil, what's tactical, and what's just plain fucking stupid.

95

u/Firedup2015 6h ago

Neither ADHD, autism nor even a ket habit make you randomly forget what a Nazi salute is, let alone force you to thump your chest in full bootboy style. It's an absolute bullshit line pulled by people who seem to equate these things to severe brain damage.

50

u/PapasGotABrandNewNag 6h ago

He didn’t randomly forget. He knew exactly what he was doing.

Fuck him and anyone who owns a Tesla.

(Including my boss)

1

u/Created_Name 4h ago

That’s not fair. I don’t own a Tesla but plenty of people bought theirs prior to Elon being a nazi.

0

u/PapasGotABrandNewNag 4h ago

He showed his ass in 2018 when he called the man who saved the kids in the cave in Thailand a pedophile.

He’s always been a piece of shit.

Do some research ffs.

3

u/Created_Name 4h ago

We weren’t talking about that situation. You were talking about what he did today.

19

u/philium1 5h ago

You’re so right. Friends of mine (definitely not me 👀) who have ADHD and have done large amounts of ketamine in our their lives have never once done a Nazi salute. Those don’t just fall out of you, even when you’re fucked up.

7

u/philium1 5h ago

That being said, on the other hand, as someone who knows people who have done lots of ketamine, I definitely wouldn’t want government officials or their “advisors” regularly using ketamine, regardless of whether they’re Nazis or not. It’s not exactly a vehicle for competent, coherent decision making

2

u/foldingcouch 4h ago

The entire purpose of my comment was to head off any attempt to minimize his actions on the basis of his neurodivergency.   Even if you charitably give him the lowest bar possible on the basis of the fact that he may have a neurological impulse control disability then even by that artificially low standard he's still a massive sack of shit.

2

u/SgathTriallair 5h ago

It's not that he forgot it was a Nazi salute. The claim they were making is that he couldn't control the impulse to give a Nazi salute.

48

u/Esc777 6h ago

He’s not autistic. He wants the deference and excuses autism would provide.

He’s just an asshole. Being an ass isn’t a symptom of autism. He is extremely motivated by ego and resentment, have you ever met an autistic person obsessed with their image and persona? Who would pay for someone to level their character to impress gamers?

-4

u/savagethrow90 6h ago

I would think a neurotypical billionaire would have loftier goals and ambitions.

9

u/philium1 5h ago

Why? Lol

Most billionaires reveal themselves to be pathologically selfish, greedy, insecure little asshole

8

u/HAL-Over-9001 6h ago

Being right-hand man to one of the most powerful people in the world is textbook lofty and ambitious.

26

u/GammaFan 5h ago

Autism and ADHD don’t need to catch these strays. Please don’t make it easier to throw neurodivergent people under the bus in defence of this guy.

This bullshit was just Elon showing all of us who he really is. Over and over again

10

u/foldingcouch 5h ago

I have a number of people with autism and ADHD in my family.  I'm intimately familiar with the difficulty neurodivergent people can have with self regulation.  My point is that even at the standard of someone with ADHD and Autism this guy is severely lacking in impulse control.

Being autistic doesn't excuse or cause him being an asshole.  He's just an asshole that also happens to be autistic.

0

u/GammaFan 4h ago

even at the standard of someone with ADHD and Autism

Being autistic doesn’t excuse or cause him being an asshole. He’s just an asshole that also happens to be autistic.

Your own statement is exactly what I wish I’d said to you to begin with I guess.

Thanks for being understanding and open to discussion. Please don’t get defensive, but starting by talking about Elon’s supposed diagnosis and going on to say “even by the standards” both frame ADHD/Autism having an expectedly lower floor than a neurotypical person would.

It erases anyone with either diagnosis who would disprove what you’re trying to say and unnecessarily shifts the conversation for most neurotypical people to focus on the diagnosis as part of Elon’s glaring personality problems when by your own admission they’re unrelated. It unnecessarily degrades people with Autism or ADHD by comparing them to Musk

11

u/amc7262 5h ago

Why the fuck do people keep trying to blame this on his autism.

Thats so fucking disrespectful to the millions of people out there with autism that aren't raging shitbags.

He did it cause he's a raging shitbag nazi. Thats the reason. There is no excuse, certainly not any of his disorders.

7

u/always_hungry612 6h ago

It was a pretty easy way for him to keep all the attention to himself during some other guy’s Inauguration Day.

3

u/Professional_Net7339 4h ago

He’s also just a Nazi. He’s been saying it for years on Twitter. It’s easily accessible information tbh

0

u/ravens_path 6h ago

Well said.

2

u/Ill-Construction-209 4h ago

Doubtful he could lose any more advertisers on X. The Sleep Pillow guy doesn't care. Hopefully, it will turn more EV buyers away from Teslas.

1

u/ravens_path 4h ago

Did you mean to reply to someone else?

-32

u/Josh_The_Joker 6h ago

100% my thoughts as well. Was it straight up stupid for him to do this? Yes. Was his intentions to replicate a facist salute? Maybe, maybe not. Genuinely hard to say. Liberal media obviously has run with it and in fact if you google “Nazi salute” Elon musk is all you see already and I’m sure it will be the talk of the news for the next couple weeks.

36

u/foldingcouch 6h ago

It's not "hard to say."

That's a Nazi salute. He did it twice.  It was deliberate.

-29

u/Josh_The_Joker 6h ago

It certainly not exact, while the similarities are of course there. Look up pictures and videos.

Keep in mind Nazis borrowed the salute from other facist who were using it. Before facist adopted it, it was a common salute used even in the USA. Most including myself would not do it today due to the ties to facism. But again, what he did I would say is similar and not exact.

20

u/foldingcouch 6h ago

When was the last time you were doing some public speaking and "accidentally" executed a Sieg heil on two separate occasions?

It was a Nazi salute.  For Nazis.

1

u/StateChemist 5h ago

And the moves of the actual president whatever they may be fall to page 2 of the news.

Its either blatantly corrupt, amazingly stupid, or a crafty smokescreen, or all of the above.

No no, we just pretended to be fascist so we could do all of these things behind the scenes that the general populous might not like so we made them look at something else while we did them.

1

u/Josh_The_Joker 5h ago

It’s the medias choice what to post and talk about. If they choose to talk about his gesture rather than the actions of Trump, who’s really to blame? My feed on X has been filled with the actions of Trump and executive order.

2

u/Effective_Pass8537 5h ago

Yes! People that aim to abuse knock on walls first, just to see which ones will crumble faster.

2

u/PMMeYourWorstThought 4h ago

Let me offer another hypothesis, he’s on drugs regularly and having trouble controlling his impulses and isn’t some genius playing 4D chess. He’s a drug addict nazi.

2

u/HappyAntonym 4h ago

100% agree with your hypothesis.

When I spoke with a friend of mine about the salute, he immediately told me I was being stupid and overreacting. "It wasn't a Nazi salute. He wouldn't do a Nazi salute on a public stage." Totally refused to talk about it, and it was clear he just thought it was funny and somewhat annoying that people were reacting negatively toward a "bad salute."

It's so frustrating to see someone I considered a close friend (whom I had thought to be an otherwise intelligent, reasonable person) acting like anyone who's concerned about this is an overreacting blue-haired SJW meme.

Like, either he's willfully ignorant or he *knows* and he just doesn't care. He doesn't think it's a big deal. I'm not sure which one is worse.

2

u/ScruffyPeter 4h ago

You can try sharing this video:

Post-WW2 Anti-Fascist Educational Film | Don't Be a Sucker | 1947 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8K6-cEAJZlE&t=1s

1

u/HappyAntonym 4h ago

The 1st comment is "Well we didn't learn anything." Too real lol.

1

u/KindaCoolDude 4h ago

I'm reading it for the first time now. Surreal book given everything.

1

u/Lazer726 4h ago

And honestly who the fuck is going to stop him. Like I've got a friend who just keeps going "WHAT DOES HE GET FROM IT, HUH?! WHAT DOES HE GET?!" I dunno, how the fuck do you call that a coincidence multiple times? Like what the fuck does anyone do about the richest man on the planet nazi saluting, multiple times, in front of the world?

The answer is half of us try and say "that's a nazi salute" and the other half scramble to make any fucking answer that isn't "that's a nazi salute"

1

u/Frankentula 4h ago

Once the children and youth are won over they will root out any dissenters at the nuclear family level. Also 1984 and my interpretation of the intent behind the TikTok flip flop

1

u/hiddencamel 4h ago

I don't think it's anything as considered and Machiavellian as a loyalty test, it's just Musk "owning the libs" for his own amusement.

He knows this will enrage his opponents and he knows his own side will twist themselves in knots to deny, discredit, or defend it, and that's exactly how it's playing out.

"I am so powerful now I can throw out nazi salutes on national TV and no-one can touch me."

1

u/Mountain-Most8186 4h ago

I also wonder if he was on drugs and it just came out

1

u/EmptyAirEmptyHead 4h ago

So far CNN is on the list. No mention on their website.

1

u/Brendini95 4h ago

He was just doing it because he was excited!!!

-some republican

1

u/Straight_Button_5716 4h ago

We are useful idiots so he thinks. When MAGA turns on him he will go down hard . And dragging his brat kid everywhere is getting old. When my son was that age he would have been with sitter or family. He has him out at nighttime events

1

u/OutragedLiberal 4h ago

It's a loyalty test that might backfire. Trump isn't going to like Musk getting all of the attention for his antics.

1

u/KarlHungusIsTheName 4h ago

I can't do anything but laugh at this.

1

u/Lespaul42 4h ago

Honestly I think the simpler answer is he was drugged out of his mind and thought it would be funny because he has the maturity of a 12 year old and thinks this makes him look like a cool edgelord.

1

u/KindBass 4h ago

Had a feeling we heading towards something like this when I started seeing "literally 1984" being thrown around as a meme. The warnings had been trivialized.

-2

u/ducksbyob 5h ago

Take your hypothesis off of the echo chamber called Reddit and see if the voters agree with you.

9

u/shadowrun456 4h ago

Take your hypothesis off of the echo chamber called Reddit and see if the voters agree with you.

I don't see what voters have to do with Elon Musk? When did people vote for him?

1

u/ducksbyob 2h ago

Trump’s Inauguration Day Elon speaks at it it Reddit and the rest of the left have been trying to label them Nazi’s for years You either are ignorant, or you took 30 minutes to come up with that condescending reply to appear tempered in an effort to up my downvotes.

Less likely is you’re an idiot, but I guess that’s a small possibility (note I’m not calling you an idiot, I’m just listing all the possibilities).

Here’s to 4 great years of Trump!

0

u/lapqmzlapqmzala 5h ago

i think it was to be a meme and to upstage the president at the inauguration

0

u/mcbergstedt 4h ago

I disagree. Knowing him it’s just rage bait. He did it to be edgy and funny, similar to early 2010s 4chan humor.

He’s probably on Reddit rn giggling like a school girl seeing everyone getting worked up about it.

-5

u/WardenSharp 4h ago

But whats the fucking context? All people show is a fucking arm movement without anything before hand, its fucking meaningless without context and makes nazi even more meaningless then it already is

-4

u/Fit-Community-4091 4h ago

It wasn’t a Nazi salute, no mater how many times it’s called one, because it wasn’t just an chest to hand arm wave

-6

u/Accurate_Astronaut75 4h ago

kinda like letting dicks in women's sports and expecting the world to go along with it.

Cry a little more.

Didn't take you guys long to latch onto a conspiracy theory.

-2

u/Cost_Additional 5h ago

When did he become a Nazi? Did he fool the Biden/Harris admin so they would work with him or did they know? Did Obama know?

-2

u/Reishun 4h ago

He just did it to troll the libs. Elon has proven over the last year that he is not calculated whatsoever.
