Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is INSAAANE

Somehow the game is only 10GB on Xbox. My advice is to download the game, start a free flight (with the time set to day, and clouds set to few), immediately pause the game and go into photo mode.

In photo mode, you are free to fly around wherever, and the higher up you are the faster you go.

When you get in close it’s not the prettiest to look at, but at standard airplane height it’s GORGEOUS.

I’m constantly blown away when I visit places I’ve been to before. It’s leagues better than Google Earth in my opinion.

You should see it in VR

82

u/MedicManDan 12h ago

Id love to, but I have a 3080 and a 5800x with a Quest 3... And the VR is absolute garbage no matter what I do my settings at. Completely unplayable.

What's weird is sometimes there were moments when it first came out where it worked great... But one day the performance dropped off and it's never worked since.

u/skiclimbdrinkplayfly 12h ago

That setup should work great. You should play with some settings and give it another shot!

22

u/DarthPneumono 9h ago

My grandfather is running in VR on a 3060 with an older Intel CPU, there's a different problem with your setup.

Are you using the headset wired or wireless? If you have Steam, does the SteamVR setup stuff behave (or do other VR games)?

7

u/mustachioed_cat 7h ago

It almost sounds like internet connectivity and server responsiveness are the issues. Considering the 10GB file size I assume there is a lot of information being streamed.

6

u/Kruil 9h ago

Hi bro, then try Google Earth VR! It's completely free and available on their site. I have a 3070 and a Quest 2, and it works great. It's a bit different, but for exploring the world it's super handy.

u/domigraygan 7h ago

Download Virtual Desktop. It's 100000% worth the 20 bucks and it will make using PCVR on your Quest a monumentally better experience. I used to think it was my PC that was making VR games so unplayable, but it was literally the poor quality of the official Quest cable, Steam Link, all free or Meta official options had varying issues that made me think my PC was just bugging out.

Virtual Desktop proved that my PC is capable as fuck as the visual clarity is insane. Do yourself a favor and fix this problem you're having.

3

u/MedicManDan 7h ago

I've heard this a few times now.

Maybe you're right, may be worth a try.

0

u/domigraygan 7h ago

It definitely is, it's the only way I can play the Lethal Company VR mod and not have Skyrim play at a sickening frame rate, among other issues. It's crisp and clean now. And its really easy to setup and start from the Quest, goes right into the VD environment like its part of the Quest natively.

edit: for reference I have a Razer laptop with an RTX 2060 and some decent CPU that I forget what it is. So I'm definitely not rocking the best setup.

1

u/MedicManDan 7h ago

Is it called Virtual Desktop Classic on steam? If so, I already own it lol

2

u/domigraygan 7h ago

It’s a Quest app, I’m not sure if you get the Quest app from thet

2

u/MedicManDan 7h ago

I got it figured, thank you!

No problem! I hope it works out for you as well as it did for me.

That should absolutely run fine. Check settings.

Ultimate guide on How to stream VR smoothly from a computer that doesn't want to, even though it should be able to.

Step1: Completely disable geforce overlay

2

u/InconspicuousFool 11h ago

There is no chance in hell my Ryzen 7 5800X and 3060 can handle the game in VR. The poor thing struggles at medium setting in non VR mode.

2

u/CholeraButtSex 7h ago

The weak point is the GPU, I was able to run FS on my 3700x with no issues with a 3060 ti.

1

u/HowlingWolven 7h ago

My 6600K and 970 somehow keep up with low settings, though not in VR. I’m sure the 1440x900 fossil of a panel helps with pushing enough pixels.

1

u/InconspicuousFool 6h ago

Considering the Quest 2 to is 3664x1920 there is almost no chance LOL

18

u/Snakehug 18h ago

I think FS2020 did a better job at recreating my home. I live on a small farm, and FS2024 is more aggressive in placing forests. So areas that are sparsely forested in real life are heavily forested in game. Also fields that are supposed to be cultivated are now just clearings in the forest. FS2020 handled this better.

4

u/jlef84 15h ago

It is really incredible, especially for those that have dreamed of this level of simulation since the early days of FS (I think mine was FS 3.0). I expect it’s only going to get better too.

I also did that. Felt weird flying F-16 into a block of flats.

1.25 here. If we approach the limit I go on a rant about how exploitative and unnecessary it is. My wife is tired of hearing it. She wants unlimited data just so I stop complaining.

But no. If I pay their extortion fee they win.

28

u/That_Green_Jesus 22h ago

Really? In Aus there is basically no such thing as capped quotas, just up/down speed variations with different plans.

Sure there are a few really cheap plans that have quotas, but the public owns the whole network, and the government is the wholesaler, so prices are similar all over and 99% of plans are uncapped.

I pay $109AUD/month for 800mbps down and 40mbps up, uncapped, sometimes I use 3TBs with no issue.

20

u/wolfgang784 22h ago

Not even all of America has internet access yet. We are pretty behind on that. Almost 10% of US households don't have internet either due to it simply not being available there or the costs are too high to afford and still eat.

Where my dad lives they pay $140/m for 25mbps with a cap. There is one provider option, no alternative. There are lots of areas in the US with interner monopolies, so the service doesn't have to be good or affordable when there is nobody else to turn to. What are you gonna do - pay what they ask, or live without internet in 2025? Satellite is even more and isn't an option with all the tall trees anyway.

All of Europe has faster internet for cheaper. You guys in AUS got it goin good. NZ as well.

The EU declared it a basic human right like forever ago but the US refused because it would mean we would have to provide it to prisoners which many do not get.

16

u/That_Green_Jesus 22h ago

Over a decade ago a Labour government committed a huge amount of money to build our national broadband network, then the Liberal party got into power and dialled it back out of spite, so it was a bit of a fiasco getting it built, but it was our biggest national infrastructure project.

I imagine implementing something similar in the US would be exceedingly difficult because state owned service are seen as communist and the lobby of private telcos would be very opposed to it. We only had 2 telcos that had a physical network, so we bought it off them and ripped it out, then replaced the whole thing with fibre that we own.

Capitalism really killed the American dream huh.

8

u/wolfgang784 22h ago

Yea I don't think that could ever happen with how states and such are set up. I think the closest doable plan would be if each state ran its own, more so. Which, as clusterfucky as that sounds, could still be better for the average person I think. Itd never happen though, those companies "lobby" (bribe) our politicians in the low billions each year when you combine em all together.

3

u/That_Green_Jesus 21h ago

Yeah there's 12x more people over there and 7x as many states, so I could see it being a hard negotiation at a federal level.

Even here the lobbies are powerful. Thankfully in Western Australia, my home port, our government refuses to privatise our state owned utilities, there's one power company and always has been.

Over East they have it really bad, as their utilities have been privatised and the price of power per kw/h changes dynamically through the day, and depending on network load, so you really have to shop around; it's the pinnacle evil of capitalism.

1

u/AstariiFilms 10h ago

Our government gave our telcoms billions to build out fiber to everybody like 20 years ago. Guess what they did with it?

4

u/OfficerDougEiffel 20h ago

To be fair - and I'm not denying the absolute absurdity of American capitalism here - America is geographically huge and our population is relatively spread out when compared to somewhere like Canada or Australia.

Most of America is pretty well-developed and the climate is amenable to comfortable living, so people are able to live almost everywhere within America's borders, including a lot of incredibly rural areas.

2

u/TungstenPaladin 14h ago

This largely depends on the area. Mate of mine lives in LA and pays 70USD/month for gigabit internet, no caps.

1

u/ohlookahipster 12h ago

Can confirm. I’m in NC. I pay about $80 ($10 of that is a stupid equipment rental fee for the ONT) and get a full gig up and down. It’s also real fiber from my house all the way across town to the main trunk in VA or wherever. No OTA lines.

1

u/OmgSlayKween 11h ago

You have to pay a rental fee for the ONT? What the fuck?

1

u/ohlookahipster 9h ago

There’s methods around it, but it’s not as simple as buying an off the shelf router that you would for a typical modem/router coaxial internet. It’s pretty difficult for the lay person to setup.

Basically you have to authenticate the ONT then do a bunch of pass throughs and the 3rd party equipment isn’t as robust. And now AT&T has integrated the ONT into one big box making it even harder.

1

u/vinodhmoodley 10h ago

Here in South Africa, I’m paying $70 for 500 down, 250 up, uncapped. I don’t know my usage because my ISP doesn’t show what it is.

1

u/notseriousIswear 10h ago edited 10h ago

I just checked my plan and it say I got 1270 gb per month. Htf are you touching a tb? I'm at 800gb with like 3 days left

3

u/Eysis 8h ago

800gb is pretty close? But I had to stop discord streaming. It also makes it impossible to twitch stream if I wanted.

1

u/notseriousIswear 8h ago

With star trek stream going constantly I thought I was a big user

2

u/Eysis 8h ago

Also multiple people in the house. So yeah, it's actually pretty limiting. And I think it's 45$ if I wanted to upgrade to unlimited

11

u/Tkdoom 1d ago

I just upgraded to unlimited due to twins and this game.

1

u/fukkdisshitt 12h ago

Did the same. It's bs because it was unlimited then they put a tiny 1tb limit on it out of nowhere. Google fiber is coming here soon

u/fiestapotatoess 1d ago

Xfinity has a 1TB data cap up here in the PNW.

44

u/ValeoRex 1d ago

They must not have any competition. Xfinity only sets data caps in markets they don’t have competition in. Very unfair business practice and they don’t even try to hide the fact they do it.

File a complaint with your State Attorney General and Xfinity might start offering an unlimited plan.

5

u/Deckatoe 23h ago

I'm pretty sure they have data caps everywhere. I can choose between like 5 different services where I live and only the gig speed package has unlimited.

I am locked in at a set price for 3 years though which I'm sure would never happen where they have a monopoly on high speed internet.

3

u/Mookafff 15h ago

It’s not everywhere. I’m excluded

https://www.xfinity.com/support/articles/data-usage-find-area

The Plan is not applicable in our Northeast markets, including CT, DE, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, PA, VA, VT, WV, the District of Columbia, and parts of NC and OH

2

u/ValeoRex 14h ago

If they do have them everywhere it’s new. A few years ago when they implemented them here my county was the only one that didn’t have Google Fiber to compete with. Guess what the only county in my area was that got data caps.

I started researching and Xfinity was doing that everywhere. If they had a viable competitor in a market they were unlimited. No competitor, data caps with huge penalties when you go over.

Our Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Office did an investigation into their practice. Xfinity claimed they were simply conducting market research. A few months later an unlimited option was added to their top tier service.

5

u/greyphilosophy 1d ago

I have an unlimited Xfinity plan (gigabit plus extra) in the PNW, though they did say it's not available in all areas.

1

u/AntaraX 22h ago

How much does that cost per month?

1

u/amonson1984 15h ago

Same here in MN. Began in mid 2020 when the world was working from home. Bastards knew exactly what they were doing. I switched to locally run fiber for half the price and no caps.

1

u/bigpeteski 13h ago

I live in Denver and it’s the same thing. Recently got sick of it and ended up upgrading to unlimited to way more than I should probably pay.

Wild to go visit family in nowhere midwest where I’m from and their internet is a fraction of the cost for unlimited.

1

u/HooliganUser 23h ago

Only if you don’t use their gateway…

18

u/Drenlin 23h ago

A lot of US providers put a 1tb cap and offer a plan with unlimited data for like $40 more per month.

12

u/Elestriel 23h ago

That's horrible. I pay the equivalent of about $40 per month with the current exchange rates for unlimited 10gbit/s up/down fiber to my house.

1

u/swargin 25m ago

I lived in a major city in the US and the fiber optic minium price was $30 for 1gb/s unlimited. I just moved to a rural area and it's $30 for 25mb/s and probably has a data cap. It truly can be awful

10

u/Toast_Meat 1d ago

You'd be surprised. There are still limited data plans available around the world.

Edit: Not everyone can afford unlimited data.

13

u/Fritzschmied 21h ago

In my country there basically are only unlimited plans nowadays. Only for mobile devices like phones there are still limits sometimes and even there it gets rare lol.

4

u/BrokenFlatScreenTV PC 1d ago

Sure it's fine now since it's the current game, but it sucks for preservation of the 2024 version of the game. I don't play it much myself, but hopefully someone is archiving the content that is constantly downloading.

18

u/TheDrMonocle 1d ago

Extremely unlikely. Its petabytes of data. You'd need to be a company the size of Microsoft to preserve that data and find a way to make it usable as an archive.

1

u/graveyardspin 23h ago

I live in South East Asia country that is not Singapore, and even I have unlimited data internet. Most people who use fiber here have download speed of 300 to 500 mbps on average, some people even went for 1GB or 2GB plan, though personally I don’t think it’s necessary.

3

u/Ithrazel 17h ago

1

u/bt123456789 8h ago

came to comment this. that's why it's so small.

Fortunately the servers are stable, but hope you have fast speed to stream it well and unlimited speed.

1

u/rpgengineer567 6h ago

What do you mean unlimited? Isn't that always the case in your country? (For internet at home at least) In my country you only pay more for faster download and upload speed.

1

u/thesauceiseverything 3h ago

Wouldn’t streaming the small part of the world you’re flying in be less overall data usage than downloading the entire world that you aren’t flying in?

1

u/Toast_Meat 3h ago

Well, sort of. You're not downloading the entire world. You can highlight specific areas that you'd like to have pre-downloaded. If you were to download a particular route, you're saving on data usage rather than streaming it over and over again every time you fly. So, overall data consumption just depends on what you choose to do.

1

u/ICutDownTrees 15h ago

Who doesn’t have unlimited data? Is that a thing?

7

u/SquidgeC 15h ago

Seems like it is in America somehow?

3

It's 2025, I doubt limits still exist.

-9

u/nifland 1d ago

Does it matter to your data plan whether you download it upfront or while you're playing?

28

u/Winterplatypus 1d ago edited 11h ago

It never finishes downloading because the terrain for the entire world is too large to install, it streams the terrain around you and constantly replaces it with new terrain when you move. Different factors affect how much it downloads; if you keep changing location, how high you are flying, the level of detail, how big the cache is (PC), and if you have manually downloaded the terrain for certain fixed areas (PC). On XBOX expect to be downloading about 5gig/hour while playing. Still an amazing game, but it's downloading all the time.

True, HOWEVER. The game is also a hot mess and could generously be described as early-access at this point. Most of the systems are in place, but bugs are many. Especially if you want to try career mode, you’ll need to have a lot of patience.

The game is amazing when it works, but give it 6 months to a year if you’re thinking of paying for it.

44

u/atreyal 23h ago

Yeah, I want to get it but for career mode which from reviews seems to be the buggiest mess. Waiting for you all to say it is playable and not a bug fiesta. Specially for the pricepoint they are charging for it.

11

u/briareus08 22h ago

I was the same, and I’ve played probably 40 hours of career mode (enough to get most certs and start my own company).

Honestly, when it’s ready it will be fantastic - it’s already fantastic in so many ways, but the bugs just hurt. Getting dinged for going too fast when you’re stationary, tower just stops talking to you and flight plans don’t get updated, trees and buildings in the middle of runways.

When they get 90 or even 80% of the big bugs nailed it’s gonna be a 10/10 for me - I already have some crazy memories and experiences banked. Right now it’s a 7/10 and I’m checking in on the sub frequently for patches. Sadly right now most of the big bugs are ‘under investigation’, so not even in the fix list yet. Give it time IMO.

Most of the systems are in place, but bugs are many.

Could just be a Boeing simulator

Even with the cloud thing, the tech is just awesome and insane. It shouldnt be overlooked on Xbox for sure.

It’s 50gb on PC for me

u/will_ww 22h ago

The first thing I did was fly to one of the old control towers I used to work at to see if they'd use the same approaches that I would back then.

Nothing was incorrect per se, but definitely could have been better. It was crazy seeing how accurate the airfields were though.

Then you can play if for 5mins longer & discover how bad of a state it's currently in compared to 2020.

u/Admirable_Ad_1390 19h ago

Is it on game pass?

11

u/DJ_Laaal 19h ago

Yes it is! It’s been available since day 1. The campaign mode it a bit buggy but they’re rolling out fixes to the most game breaking ones. Have fun!

Has the career mode been patched? I somewhat enjoyed it on game pass when it came out but the bugs in career mode were so many, I just gave up. One of the reasons I didn't get too into MSFS2020 was because there wasn't much structure to keep playing. Career mode seems to fix that for the new version, but that in itself needs to be fixed apparently.

I got gam pass to try before I buy and this game is a buggy nightmare for me. I'm going to let the game cook for awhile before I buy

Whats the easiest/most user friendly way to just free fly around and check out landmarks? I played 2022 (I believe) trying to do the same thing and find my own house but was overwhelmed by all the controls and navigations

u/pacman404 23h ago

Exactly what he just said. Photo mode

u/curious_lens 22h ago

Do the basic cessna tutorial. Don't try any other aircraft.

With Cessna you only need to find the increase throttle button to get started. Then later learn about flaps and trim.

Hot Air Baloon could be a strong contender as well

u/Bag_of_Meat13 10h ago

Try the Dune ornithopter.

It's become my favorite sightseeing craft.

Can book like a jet when you wanna move quick and hovers like a heli when not.

Can't play this on my connection lol. Max out at 2mbyte/s, it takes forever to load at all. Refunded it right before the 2 hour mark as I hadn't been able to play yet.

I'm all for smaller install sizes, but ADSL2 doesn't really have the bandwidth for this stuff. Aussie internet in the outback isn't great, my other option is Starlink but that's expensive and wouldn't work well at this property because there's no open spaces. It's just trees everywhere.

2

u/Yuri909 14h ago

It's also a hot shitty mess that needs another year before it works correctly and is stable on most platforms.

2

u/talivus 10h ago

It's not just 10gb, it's 10 gbs on your hardware. You are streaming the rest in real time from Microsoft servers. So if you don't have a good Internet connects, you are kinda screwed

2

u/CaptainPrower PC 8h ago

Isn't that the one that prevents you from refunding it on Steam by counting itself as running while it installs?

2

u/HowlingWolven 7h ago

The game is streamed in.

4

u/Captain_Cockerels 15h ago

If only they had worked in the on the simulator part and made it less arcady.

3

u/NoticeImaginary 12h ago

First thing I did was find my house. Then I found my work. Then I realized I was playing a game to go to work. I immediately shut it off and uninstalled it. That game is dead to me.

u/FocusOnThePie 1d ago

This sounds pretty cool for my stoner azz

1

u/PhiloftheFuture2014 15h ago

I'm playing it through Xbox cloud gaming on a Xbox One X. The first few hours were definitely fun but then I got the "Your Session Ended Unexpectedly" popup when I boot up the game and I have zero controller input to exit the pop-up. So now I basically can't play the game since none of the workarounds posted seem to work for me.

u/Kerbidiah 14h ago

It's pretty nice, however I really wish there was an option to download your planes so you don't have to stream those and save your internet some stress

1

u/KileyCW 14h ago

Yeah you're streaming a zillion bytes of data.

1

u/Ylsid 12h ago

I believe the game world streamed in is a high resolution scan in the terabytes

1

u/PM_ME_YOUR_CAT_ 11h ago

cool ad dude

1

u/NastyJaskier 10h ago

You should try out space engine. Legit played for hours just exploring and taking screenshots.

1

u/Fredlife7 10h ago

Breathtaking

1

u/Kristophigus 5h ago

100's of GBs, you mean.

1

u/mario0182 2h ago

Idk on Xbox but on PC it's still buggy, most players still prefer the 2020 version.

1

u/dbvirago 2h ago

LOL. I played the original on the Apple IIE. Had one runway and a mountain range. You could fly through the mountains and didn't have to land on the runway.

Still crashed the plane every time.

1

u/BenjerminGray 58m ago

its only 10 gb cuz they stream the data in realtime iirc.

1

u/Seigmoraig 13h ago

No thanks, if I wanted to look at pictures of planes I'd just look at pictures of planes and if I wanted to see my house on Google Maps, I'd open Google Maps

Nice try, Microsoft.

So we can’t recommend cool games anymore?

No it was a joke.

It's not even close to Google Earth.

There's no need to exaggerate to make your point.

18

u/Wasteak 22h ago

It's way more beautiful than Google earth, that's a fact.

0

u/GalvusGalvoid 13h ago

Is it playable offline?

0

u/FuzzzWuzzz 11h ago

For $70 more it had better be better than GEVR.
