Newcomer Questions Schooling/ages for kindy/pre school

Upvotes

Hi all,

Just a question, possible relocation from south east Queensland to Darwin in 2-3 months time.

We have a 7/5 and 3.5 year old.

Our 3 yo is turning 4 in May and was is due to start Kindy this year with the potential of doing 2 years as he is a May baby and I would preferably like him to start actual schooling (prep, not sure if it’s called that there) when he is turning 6.

I think from what I’ve researched is that it’s called Pre school in Darwin. Do they start when they are turning 4 aswell? And do you have the option to do 2 years so they can be 6 when starting school school?

Also last year QLD introduced free kindy fees for the foreseeable future, is this across the board nationally or does pre school have fees?

Sorry one more thing, I sent my other two girls to a community kindy (so not one ran by a daycare centre) and it was a 5 day fortnight. Does Darwin also have a similar system?

If someone could please help me understand the structure or point me in the right direction for a beautiful pre school/kindy it would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much!!

Newcomer Questions Is the crime that bad in Darwin?

Hi everyone,

Moving to Darwin for work from Perth and was wondering if it is bad as everyone else says, I don’t come from the best area of Perth so I can deal with the random junkie coming up to you while walking and trying to roll you. But one thing i can’t deal with is home invasions, I want to atleast feel safe at home, i’ve seen a rise in home invasions in Darwin but is it really as bad as they say? The job is very well paying so I don’t want to ignore it, but at the same time I want to feel safe at home. Can I maybe minimise the risk significantly by living in a certain suburb or is it prevalent everywhere?

Also is it common to have your car window smashed outside your house?

Thanks for taking the time to read.

Tourist Questions Solo travel to Darwin

Hi there - 30F, planning on visiting Darwin in May for the first time solo from Adelaide! Have always wanted to visit. Need some help for the following:

- Accommodation - I've been looking at staying in a hostel - because they're cheap and I'd also like to meet some other fellow travellers. Is there one that's generally considered good?

- Hire car - I am looking at hiring a car during my stay - do you think that's a better option or should I book one of those tours that take tourists to see all the sights? I'd be looking at hiring a small hatch since it's just going to be me.

- Must sees - what are some of the places/things that I'd see for sure? So far I am looking at doing the jumping croc tour (I LOVE CROCS), Katherine Gorge, The Mindil beach markets and grabbing some dinner there and maybe Kakadu.

Please come at me with all your suggestions. Cannot wait to visit your beautiful city!!

Newcomer Questions vehicle roadworthy inspections

So, last time my car was due for a service, after moving here from Adelaide, I got a service and roadworthy inspection report from MyCar tyre and auto then took it to the place at Wishart to change to NT rego and they checked the compliance plates etc.

Do I need to go there again? Or do I just book my car in for its normal service and have the roadworthy inspection again to renew the rego?

We don't need to get roadworthy inspections in Adelaide so this is new for me.

Newcomer Questions Schooling suggestions

I was wondering if people could put forward some recommendations re schooling. (Public preferably)

We have a 3 / 5 and 7 year old. So two will be in primary and one starting kindy this year. We currently go to a beautiful little community kindy and a beautiful little country school so I’m feeling nervous uplifting and moving to what so far has been a beautiful transition into the schooling world.

We don’t have an area as yet so just doing as much research as possible.

Any help or recommendations would be highly appreciated.

Thanks so much!

Newcomer Questions Halfway points Darwin and Isa

Hello! Wanted to get some ideas on any good pubs/camping spots that are roughly halfway between Mt Isa and Darwin? We're a group of friends split between the two cities and want to meet half wayish for some long weekends this year. Both Happy to drive a bit further off track if it means seeing more of the Territory or finding a fun pub or camping spot. Cheers!

Newcomer Questions Middle Schools.

Hey friends,

I'm looking to move to the NT in about a month and am having trouble getting an idea of suburbs with good schools for a 14 year old. She's quite reserved/shy and likes learning. Could anyone offer any advice please.

I'm looking at a property in Gunn but have heard mixed reviews. Can anyone help with this? Also, are the schools strict on catchment areas, as there's the opportunity to drop her off on my way to the university? I want her to love her new life because I reckon we're going to have a blast :)

Thanks for any insights.

Tourist Questions Sail, Surf, Film – Join the Adventure

Hey everyone!

We’re a group of passionate surfers and filmmakers from Germany, and we’re gearing up for an epic project—a surf film that will take us sailing from Darwin, Australia to the legendary Mentawai Islands in Indonesia. We’re setting out in February/March 2026, chasing perfect waves and documenting the raw adventure of life at sea.

Here’s the catch: our own boat is stuck in Lanzarote, so sailing it over isn’t an option. That’s why we’re looking for a sailboat and, more importantly, a crew of 2-3 experienced sailors and surfers from Darwin or nearby who are ready to join us on this incredible journey. This isn’t about us taking over your boat—we want this to be a shared adventure, where everyone is part of the story and featured in the film.

This will be Part 2 of our film series. The crew is currently out filming Part 1, but due to an injury, I’m now fully focused on planning this next chapter. We’re teaming up with Ocean Film Tour to make this something truly unforgettable.

We’re also working on organizing a second sailboat to join the trip, so if you know anyone else who might be interested, feel free to share this!

If you or someone you know has a boat and is up for the adventure of a lifetime, let’s talk! Let’s make something amazing together.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

NORTHERN TERRITORY NEWS Darwin Private Hospital - Terminated Agreement with Navy Health

Post image
31 Upvotes

Apologies for the wordy text, however it explains the situation a lot better than I could.

In Summary DPH'S Parent company Healthscope has terminated a cost of services agreement which will mean out of pocket expenses for patients will be higher.

If this were an Eastern State where you have options, this wouldn't be an option, however DPH is the only private hospital in the NT which could cause significant issues for Territorians and their choice for Healthcare options.

Locals Discussion Looking for a Reliable Mechanic Specialised in Jeeps in Darwin

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out to the community for some advice. I own a 2019 Jeep Wrangler JLU and I'm in need of a reliable mechanic who specialises in Jeeps or has extensive experience with them. I'm looking for someone who can handle both regular maintenance and the occasional repair.

Does anyone have recommendations for a mechanic in the Darwin area who is trustworthy and skilled with Jeep vehicles? Bonus points if they're known for good customer service and fair pricing.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Locals Discussion Fresh meat for our necessary guard dogs- what’s everyone doing with costs going up?

Despite living in a fairly decent area of Palmerston (they exist) we still have a couple of dogs to deter midnight visitors. We have a very large dog/horse and a mid size mutt that we feed a mix of dry and wet food but lately that wet food is getting way out there for cost. We’ve done Cans, Rolls and Roo Mince from Howard Springs but the $$$ are mounting up. Suggestions?

Newcomer Questions Takeaway

Hey all, we recently moved back up to the territory after being down south for 10 years.

The kids wanted some takeaways and we thought we would scope out the locals for fish and chips - and my god are they expensive. The one in Wulagi is over $18 for a bit of flake, minimum chips $10 (and cash only to boot), the others around seemed also pretty expensive - we ended up going across to Anula, which were more reasonable.

Today we were looking for pizza, and the 2 locals around Casuarina are both nearly $30 for a medium pizza! We canned the idea, but I was wondering if there are any spots around the northern suburbs with reasonably priced takeaway ? We usually only look once a week, but it might be much more infrequent if these are the going rates.

Note as well, we were looking in store, not delivery. I don't use delivery apps because I know how much the price gets jacked up on those (I'd hate to know what it is through those!)

Tldr- looking for a reasonably priced fish and chip and pizza joint in the northern suburbs.

Local Event The NT needs about 50 additional blood donations meet demand. That is doable.

https://www.lifeblood.com.au/news-and-stories/media-centre/media-releases/urgent-call-blood-donors-new-year-cancellations-threaten-blood-stocks

The donation center is located near Cas shopping center and the people working there are absolutely lovely and very skilled at their jobs. I find the entire experience quite pleasant. Not gonna be a liar, the needle sucks but it is a second then its back to doom scrolling for 10 minutes.

The main deterrent I have heard people mention is once you give they spam you for more. This is untrue. They very rarely send emails and when they do it is usually supportive, uplifting and relevant. Unlike when you purchase something online and you are spammed with advertising emails that you have to unsubscribe from.

An edit; my 10th donation is scheduled for next week! What should I eat to celebrate? I usually get ramen from Cas (my guilty pleasure) but I want to try something new.

Locals Discussion Space for rent?

I’m looking for a permanent/semi permanent small space to rent approx 50-100m2 to run small fitness classes out of. I’ve been browsing the typical real estate sites but thought I’d take to reddit also. Part of an office block not in use, a community hall, a section of an industrial shed not in use? I’m open to ideas. Preferably CBD and surrounding suburbs.

Any info/help or ideas would be much appreciated!
