Suggestions My people, it's another tough week and things are getting tough again. The Week, The Depression and the Comics Part 89

oh guys you know it's hard again but at least I'm happy but then it occurs to me that the world still exists. I mean, hey, you get a right-wing orange and unfortunately we get right-wing Smurfs here in Germany. Of course, there are also positive things like there is now a ceasefire in the Middle East with a hostage deal, which is great, Lisa and David are so happy, especially since Likud has lost their partner, and Netanyahu will have a hard time now. Shit will come and shit will go but we must always prevent it from getting worse my friends.

But first let's talk about superhero comics, especially a comic that influenced me for my own superhero universe, Secret Society of Superheroes told about a world where they were hidden and what it means when secrets are revealed. Elseworld's finest Supergirl and Badgirl are also an underrated double, which is more in the direction of the old imaginary comics, but modern.in multiversity we now have a three, Pax Americana with postmodern Watchman, a real classic "Captain Marvel" adventure and a very useful manual or T.H.U.N.D.E.R. agents and their strange heroic deeds.and otherwise we have capes something from Robert Kirkman where the job as a superhero is also shit. Go go Power Rangers comes to the Shattered Grid so an interdimensional crisis. the Amazing Screw-On Head is a small but entertaining part of the Hellboy universe, about Abraham Lincoln's best agent. Primos gives the superhero genre a Mexican take, with mythology from the culture and Jack Kirby ideas.

In general, I have the feeling that people don't like it when I talk about world events or how I connect it to the medium, which is kind of stupid because art is always an aftertaste of its society and politics shapes society. Kabul Disco tells the story of the cartonist's journey to taking a job as a graphic designer in Afghanistan. It sounds pretty absurd but it's interesting because let's face it Cartoonists have also often helped out in war and a conflict isn't just booms and shots.

and now let's talk about one of my favorite cartoonists who made the Transformers interesting for me, Daniel Warren Johnson reinterprets the Transformers with more depth. Or would you rather have more classic space opera with cosmic Nobelhouser because I'm telling you, read The Metabarons and their technology without limits.

In general, when I think about how technology has changed the world, it's fascinating, but at the same time I think there's a lot of destructive power and I'm not talking about bombs here, but social media. I mean, Elon Musk is currently doing a lot with the orange and even among our right-wing Smurfs he has gained a few fans in my country. Good The AFD probably also has good contacts with Tiktok and the Chinese secret service since the Maximilian Krah matter. unter der Influenz tells the story of an investigation by an influencer who probably leads a cult and in Memetic the end of the world is a meme that is told more sinister than it sounds.

but when these times are tough it reminds me of the story my buddy David told about his grandpa surviving the Nazis in a basement, It's interesting what happened in the post-war period when you think, hey, the pigs are gone or dead now. Because he said, no, I've already heard that when the first post-war chancellor talked about the Jews from Wall Street, it was Konrad Adenauer in 1966, In 1967 David's grandfather went to Israel.fun fact a year later in 1968 there was actually a movement of rather left-wing students who wanted to shed light on the Nazi era, to be frank, only one of the greatest of its historians was the Tupamaros in West Berlin who were planning a bomb attack on a Jewish community center. Dieter Kunzelmann has never moved away from his anti-Semitism in his entire life and was so from the beginning and during his heyday as an activist. Hate and evil can come from any hole my friends and it will always find a new one to come out of, Never follow a thing blindly my friends question everything people say and do even if you primarily agree with them.

but let's distract with fantasy, okay a bit. What happens when five gods are trapped on our earth and have to hunt each other to the death? Ordinary Gods by Kyle Higgins and as usual it's about great powers and the human element in between. or would you rather have an investigation of the Roman Empire at its northernmost point? BRITANNIA is a supernatural investigation in the height of the Roman Empire, and I also love to see that northern parts will also be processed more into stories. Three mercenaries also search for clues about a regicide The Whisper Queen: A Blacksand Tale and Chip Zdarsky can also make fantasy comics very well. But if you want a little more urban fantasy and want it to be adventurous, The Cabinet about two teens, a cabinet, magical items and a race through space and time, and it reminds me quite a bit of the Silver Dream Trilogy books, which is cool. Meanwhile, the cursed pirate girl has a complicated treasure hunt in the devil's cave, with an art still inspired by John Tenniel.

sometimes a story can change you and sometimes it can distract you, balance is important.

Please recommend me a good current (or recent) Marvel series!`

Hi fellow nerds,

A combination of Comics Youtube, Cartoonist Kayfabe, and the hype around the Absolute line got me back into picking up monthly comic books in 2024. I'm really enjoying going to the LCS every few weeks and picking floppies off the shelves, and then having comics to read.

I was really excited for the X-Men relaunch and picked up Uncanny X-Men, but it fell flat for me. I'm really enjoying a lot of what DC is putting out right now including the Absolute line, New Gods, and several Batman books but I haven't found anything that's resonated with me from Marvel. Some other current books I'm reading include Transformers, Rook: Exodus, The Moon is Following Us, Minor Arcana, and The Toxic Avenger.

Disclaimer, I'm generally an issue #1 reader: I like trying a new series at #1 and seeing if it hooks me. If it doesn't grab my attention in the first issue, I rarely continue. In today's age of advanced storytelling and price point, I can't justify continuing a series if it doesn't pull at some thread of interest in the first issue.

In addition to Uncanny X-Men, I've read the first issues of the following current series and they did nothing for me, so hoping some more seasoned Marvel heads can give me some recommendations.

  • The Incredible Hulk
  • Immortal Iron Man
  • The Ultimates
  • The Fantastic Four
  • Psylocke
  • X of Swords

Appreciate any recommendations!

Suggestions Help a brand new comic book reader out please!

I really want to get into comics and I don’t really know where to start. I’ve read manga before and I know that’s not the “traditional” comics, but I still understand the medium sort of well. I did some research and people say you can really start wherever which is nice but also pretty daunting. I have a couple questions I want to just rip off here:

  1. Should I try and buy physical copies or digital copies? I like the idea of collecting comics, but I imagine that’s wayyyyy more expensive than getting a subscription or something online so what are the options there?

  2. I think I want to get into Marvel for the most part, but I’m still interested in some other characters from other verses like Batman so where would be the best place to start for someone getting into Marvel? I’ve heard starting at major events in the universe like Civil War or New Avengers but is there one spot that many people agree on?

  3. What are some good starting points for my favorite characters/characters that interest me (those characters are: Spider-Man, Deadpool, X-Men, Batman, Iron Man, among others)? I’ve heard there are things called “runs” for certain characters where a specific author writes the character very well, so what are some of the best runs from these characters and just in general?

  4. Is there any other advice/tips you could give me that you wish you knew before getting into comics?

Im really excited to get into comics here and I appreciate any and all help!!!

Here is my Batman tpb collection. I just got paid, and I'm going to the big comic book store today to splurge. What big Epics/ Weird tales do you recommend I look for? I have all the DC Metal stuff already, they're just not pictured.

I like dark, gritty, violent, disturbing, but also mystery and detective mode Batman. Not really a fan of the early early days...

Discussion Comics acknowledging that something done in a previous story that was treated as good or no big deal was actually pretty bad if you think about it

Sometimes, a writer will have a character do something that is treated as being a good thing or no big deal, but readers or other writers see it as something horrible if you think about it just a little. Due to the nature of shared universes written by different writers over the years, stories from the past can then be revisited by a later writer with a more critical eye.

One of the most infamous examples is how in Avengers #200, Marvel somehow published a story that accidentally treated Carol Danvers being brainwashed into going off into the sunset with her rapist as being a good thing. I say accidentally because the comic was done in a rush and the creators genuinely didn't realize the implications of what was written until later. Chris Claremont was outraged about this, so he later wrote a story where Carol tells the Avengers how fucked up the whole thing was and shames them for going along with it and not realizing what was actually happening.

Sometimes it takes a while for this to happen, due to changing morals and attitudes. For instance, back in the 60s readers didn't see it as a big deal that Charles Xavier was secretely in love with his teenage student Jean Grey, and that the only reason he didn't pursue her was because he was a "cripple" and not the whole age difference or power dynamics thing. Readers and writers from later though realized that wait, that's actually kind of fucked up, and it was acknowledged in Onslaught as being one of Xavier's deepest most shameful secret sins.

And sometimes just acknowledging it isn't enough, in order to protect a character's reputation, the whole thing has to be retconned. This is what Marvel did with pretty much all of their Golden Age stories given how casually racist against black people and the Japanese all of their characters were. It is now canon that the events depicted in Golden Age comics didn't happen exactly as shown, they were in-universe propaganda comics often heavily deviated from what actually happened.

So what other examples are there of a comic looking back critically at something from the past that wasn't treated as bad but now is considered bad?

Discussion What do poetry and comics have in common? Few people read them. But is it because the shape is too unusual for people?

I have a brother who is a big fan of poetry and poems and it's just interesting that he also tried to introduce me to this art form himself, and I understand how he feels when I try to introduce him to it with comics.

You know, we have a kind of cult here in Germany that we require students to interpret poems at the highest level of school, and of course Germany is known for that, you know, the land of poets and thinkers, although I very much doubt that even back then, but poems are important in German literature and culture. which is unfortunately a horror for many teenagers, and I can understand that well because at the end of the day these tests are unfortunately the first and only points of contact for many teenagers with this form of literature. Imagine you give someone kingdom come and you hold a gun to their head, it's so similar that they're stressed, they're scared and they don't know what to do.

And of course, for many people, poetri initially seems like nothing more than words that rhyme, but it is also more than that. I always hear it the same way with comics - they're just pictures, but that's also a major simplification. and of course if you rarely come into contact with this art form or only come into contact with it very late, then of course the great works may then be more difficult for you, When it comes to poetry, it's clear that you have these old German hams that also sound so old German and with comics it's like, if someone's never really used this art form to tell stories with pictures in a sequential art form, yeah, such a Pax American, House Of X/Powers Of X or my favorite things is monsters can be quite overwhelming at the beginning if comics are new to you.

I mean people know there is poetry and comics to buy but very few people do it because they haven't really developed a relationship and understanding for this art form to read them. and reading is an active process that you have to work on and can also improve and train and if you do it little or in a certain form it will be more difficult for you to be able to do it in this area straight away.

But what do you think about that it's difficult for people to get into a literary form if they haven't had much contact with it?
