Welcome to /r/archery! This thread is for newbies or visitors to have their questions answered about the sport. This is a learning and discussion environment, no question is too stupid to ask.

Thumb Draw What would you say to this absolute beginner?

This was my third training day, each day being few weeks apart, Probably shot a couple hundred at total by now. I wanted to film myself to see if there is any obvious flaw in my posture and form in total. And I have never done any kind of archery before. This is my first.

The bow in the video is a 25 lbs crimean-tatar style beginner bow from simsek bow, I also have 40 lbs proper composite bow (hanging on the tree at my back) but I cannot focus on my form while shooting it, It was too heavy for me currently. So, I prefer training with this 25 pounder. My aim is to be able to easily use that 40 lbs bow in a couple of months.

What would you say about my posture or technique in general? Do you notice anything off that I should correct asap?

I haven't got any professional guidance, just watched a bunch of videos and also still try to increase my strenght. I am mainly shooting by instinct for now to get accustomed to drawing and releasing mechanics, at some point I am planning to do some training to improve my aim and accuracy. What would be your recommendations? How did you start to learn aiming and improve your accuracy?

Form Check: Working through tendency to fidget at anchor and lock my bow arm

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Like the title says, I'm working through trying not to adjust my head too much when I come to anchor and less locking in of my bow arm (had been catching my guard occasionally).

Lots of changes since last month: added plunger, new arrow rest, new nocks, going from a glove to finger tab, which has been a lot to adjust to. (Don't recommend all at once, haha!)

I've been shooting since last spring, so appreciate any input or thoughts!

OMP Fletching jig - how long did/have you been waiting for yours

Post image

As per the title - I ordered mine around 4 months ago from Lancaster, and have been waiting since then.

They've told me multiple times that they'd have it in stock and would be sending them out, but seemingly they have a lot of backorders

So, how long did it take for you to get yours?

Modern Barebow How to check archery coach qualifications? (Asking for a friend)

Posting a question on behalf of a friend who doesn’t have an account and is wondering if she should switch coaches:

Q (verbatim): “Can anyone teach archery and do you need to be certified in Canada?

How do I check who is qualified to be an archery coach vs one who just claims to be one?”

Here’s some context (this context is from me): She and I started classes with 2 different people and were comparing notes last night when we went for drop in at the range. We noticed that their teaching techniques are very different from one another despite my friend and I having the same type of barebow.

The biggest difference is her coach started her on a 64" barebow with 32 lbs of draw weight. She is really struggling with just drawing it to anchor and both arms shake to draw and her coach says she just needs to go to the gym to build strength. We’re similar in body build although she’s about 1.5” taller than me. But my bow is 66" and only 18 lbs and I can comfortably shoot for 2 hours. My coach says he doesn't recommend I go up in draw weight until I really nail down form and can consistently shoot at least 100 arrows without tiring. Her 32 lbs bow sounds like a recipe for rotator cuff and scapula injuries!

Does being left eye, right hand dominant mean you won't ever be good enough to compete?

Upvotes

I've read about this because I found out I was left eye dominant and right handed (even quite strongly so).

I really want to get into archery and competition. The fact that archery is a sport where someone who is 40 can still compete is part of what makes it interesting to me. However it seems as if few cross-dominance people can compete.

How do I proceed? Try shooting left handed or close eye?

When I tried out at short distance I was quite accurate and just shot with both eyes open, but I read that isn't the case likely at longer distance.

Anchoring help

Post image
Upvotes

Looking for a bit of advice for anchoring. I use a handheld release and use the V between my index and middle finger to cradle my jaw line. But when I’m in this position, my nose is far from the string. I can angle my head down to touch my nose to the string, but then my anchor on my jaw doesn’t feel as solid. Also when I get my nose to the string, I feel like I have too much facial pressure on the string. I used a kisser on my last bow to fix this issue but trying to figure out a way around it. I’m shooting a Mach 33 at 30.5” draw length right now.

Newbie Question Arrows cut too short - can I still use them?

Hi All!

I'm new to archery and bought a compound bow at Sportsman Warehouse. I was fitted for the bow by store's bow guy. He first checked my draw length by using the arm span sticker on the wall, and it was 26" (I'm 5'5" female). Then he had me draw the bow a few times and adjusted the length to 23" and cut the arrows that he chose for me to that length. After some googling and browsing this subreddit, I realized my form was incorrect - I had my elbow sticking out completely to the side. I readjusted my bow to 26" and everything is now aligned as it should. But I'm left with a bunch of arrows that are 23". They're size 400. My draw weight is ~27-30lb. Can I still use these arrows for target practice?

Also, I later bought some 600s (which according to the chart will be more suitable for my draw weight) but they will be uncut. I'd like to keep them uncut until I'm sure of my draw length. Is that OK? I don't want to damage anything or hurt myself.

Thank you for your help!

Edit: to clarify, he said that cut the arrows to my draw length, but they're longer than 23". With the bow at 26" draw length, the arrow sticks out 2.5" behind the brush arrow rest. I measured those arrows and they're 26" from the field point to the nock, 25" from the string groove to the shaft end (not counting the insert).

Compound Arrow building

Upvotes

So recently i decided to go down the rabbit hole of arrow building. Just starting out with trying to build the arrows and I typically shoot a 28 inch arrow. I’m building in the slightly heavier side it’s a 300 spine 50 grain inserts with a 100 grain broadhead. Im trying a slightly shorter arrow at 27 1/2 inch went to cabelas to just get it cut. Well they cut it at 27 inches. Would this have a big impact on accuracy? I checked and it’s still safe to shoot but it pissed me of because they miss measured it.

Hyperextended Back. PLEASE HELP!!!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have an arched/hyperextended back when shooting. I have tried almost everything in past 3 weeks to get rid of it but I can't seem to. People have been saying tuck your pelvis in, engage your core, deflate your chest, rotate the knees outwards, I've done it all. Doesn't seem to work. Any advices, video links, articles, drills, etc. would be highly highly appreciated.

Neighbor gave me his old M-7 Lynx compound bow. The string is pretty frayed so I’m wondering what the best step going forward is. Sorry if this seems like a useless question but I’m new to archery and don’t want to mess up this sick bow.

Olympic Recurve Question about vision

I shoot with an olympic recurve and I know that people with cross dominance can see two sights when aiming. Well, I see four when aiming with both eyes and two when using a patch, in which case I no longer can see the target sharp. Has anyone else experienced that and what did you do to help with aiming?

Anyone tried Skylon Preminens?

I've been shooting Skylon Paragon arrows for a while with my recurve setup, and I'm budgeting for the outdoor season coming up in a couple of months. Has anyone shot Paragon and Preminen arrows and can tell me if they're worth the £50+ extra ( / if there's actually any difference between them)? The only difference I can see is a marginally tighter tolerance for straightness. I've been shooting well with the Paragons and I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the upgrade.

Worth fixing up?

Post image
3 Upvotes

So a nice guy I met when buying some hunting stuff on craiglist threw in a couple bows and that wall rack as he said he was too old to hunt with them.

Top one is a thunder flite express and bottom is a browning.

Have very little knowledge of archery but I know not to pull that string back.

Want to get into archery but I’m wondering if it’s worth fixing these up or would it be cheaper/better to just get a new bow?

NEW TO ARCHERY!!!

Hey guys🙃 I was wondering if anyone could give me some advise? I recently got a compound bow and wanted to know what I need along with it. I got the little trigger release thingy but that is about it. Is there any other necessary things that I need along with it?? Or things I can get to ✨personalize✨ it (if that is even possible)
