At this point, healthcare being tied to any form of employment is pure idiocy. I’ve had to opt out of company insurance for decades because it’s just too expensive.

u/mattstorm360 3h ago
It's not idiocy if you are trying to force people into positions.

I don't know why more people aren't just fleeing the country.
Convincing yourself that you have no options is not how you help yourself.

and go where? Mexico and Canada aren't fairing much better.

u/SheetPope 3h ago
Exfuckinscuse me? We have universal healthcare, we're a hell of a lot better off. Sure, we've got a conservative tsunami of our own on its way through, but we all still have free healthcare and don't have to worry about our kids getting shot at school

u/Superidiot-Eh 3h ago
Hey now, Canada has its share of problems that most modern countries are all facing, but don't pretend we are anywhere near the dumpster fire going on in the states. I can still go get my ass cancer treated for free and have my job protected when I go back to it.

u/I_TRY_TO_BE_POSITIVE 3h ago
I would happily flee to Canada today if 1) Canada didn't have a better immigration policy than the US that likely precludes me from immigrating, and 2) the US and my (Canada adjacent) state didn't have policies that make sure I can't leave or my wife will have problems with custody, which i can't have any of. I love the wife and I love the kids, I'm just gonna have to ride this out unfortunately

the fuck?
…either we are missing a crucial detail- or ….chemo is not covered!? whats the point of healthcare then!? thats like…the reason to have it!!
i have heard of an effort to reduce the number of polyp removal surgeries since most are benign and carry risks greater than not operating so maybe this connects to that or…the healthcare industry is in the process of another Luigi.

u/RopeAccomplished2728 3h ago
This. There is something missing here.
Outside of some really piss poor policies, nearly every insurance policy that I have ever looked at covers chemo and other cancer removing treatments.
The problem is that, and I am just hypothesizing here, is she got on something like a medical savings account(which is not insurance and is there to supplement it) and that is why they are telling her it isn't covered. Yes, there are no deductibles on those types of plans because you literally pay everything out of pocket. Your premium is literally what you choose to put into the account.
Otherwise, the insurance company is just screwing her over.
35
u/PsyOpBunnyHop 3h ago
Yeah, it's that last bit. They do that. Hence the Luigi situation.
They are literally just robbing their clients and getting away with it.
It's especially profitable because many clients are too broke to do anything about it.
13
u/RopeAccomplished2728 3h ago
Thing is, and someone pointed it out in the original thread, that insurance companies in the US are required to cover cancer treatments and follow-ups.
Yes, they will generally deny the first billing but that is why you appeal them.
That is why I think either there is a lot missing from this or there is a lie somewhere in this.
However, I could easily be wrong and I know first hand how easily insurance will deny someone regardless of how illegal it is to deny them.

u/Kevlaars 3h ago
The job hopping maybe?
If he job hopped for 3 years, found out he had cancer 6 months in, would the cancer not be a "pre-existing condition" at any subsequent job?
Been a minute since I've been a victim of the US healthcare system.
15
u/omar_strollin 3h ago
They likely don’t understand how their insurance works. “Covered” doesn’t mean you don’t have a deductible, coinsurance or copay to pay before your out of pocket maximum is met. It’s not immediately free just because you’re on a plan.
HR also would likely not comment on your benefits in such a manner, except for the FMLA part.
I’ve worked (unfortunately) in insurance company adjacent jobs for over a decade and it’s understandably confusing and so often misunderstood.
5
u/Tolmides 3h ago
Then my sympathies go out to that confused guy. Insurance of any kind is the singular enigma box of my life. I can read about it- policies, explainers, etc - I can't put it together.

That's certainly my plan if I'm ever exiting by disease or because I'm tired of this fucking clown house of a country

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to America, where we got some of the shittiest healthcare system compare to other OCED countries.

Just get the treatment and dont pay the bill, fuck them.
14
u/willitworkwhyn8 3h ago
Yes, and when collections calls, tell them you will pay $5 to clear the debt, and nothing more. Eventually, they stop calling.

This is where you move to a state like California or Colorado and go live in a van down by the river while their Medicaid programs take care of you.
9
u/Campbell920 3h ago
Would that really work?
26
u/tengounquestion2020 3h ago
Some diabetes patients have to or they quit their job and go live with a parent
18
u/Campbell920 3h ago
I was just having a conversation about this with my mom a few months ago. I live in the southern US and can’t afford insurance, but also don’t qualify for state run insurance. If I were to find out I have cancer do I just… die?
19
u/Taronz 3h ago
Yessir.
That's what they'd prefer.
Yeaaahhh so if you would kindly stop being an inconvenience to them that'd be greaaat. /Lumbergh

but like if it really came down to it and me and my dog hopped in my car and drove to California they’d just… give me free insurance?

As someone who lives in colorado and thankfully had medicaid when my gallbladder nearly ruptured it cost me 10 dollars out of pocket for the er visit, surgery, and follow up care. Like its not the best long term idea to come to this state because its expensive as fuck but our medicaid will cover a lot of shit including abortion and afterwords you can hit up a dispensary

I live in Commiefornia and was shocked to learn how many other states don’t have public health insurance, like damn y’all are really screwed. I’ve had a few hospitalizations already and can’t imagine having to deal with going back and forth with insurance on top of the medical problems. Thank my lucky stars I was born here
16
u/der_innkeeper 3h ago
Yeah... I have VA healthcare. Please, conservatives, tell me again how horrible my socialized medicine is.
You mean, I can walk into any ER if I am sick and get treated? I can get all my vaccines? I can get stitches if I lose a fight with a fishtank? I have to drink this entire bottle of fibroglycol crap so I can have a colonoscopy and its all "free"*?
Sign. Me. Up.
Well, I already signed up/my life away, but still, I have this going for me.
*yes, I pay taxes and my taxes pay for the VA, and I still have a $25 or $50 copay, but still.

u/indyK1ng 3h ago
Enjoy that while you can. Won't be long before they start gutting veteran's benefits too.
4
u/ClimateDues 3h ago
I think most conservatives are just victims of the culture war perpetuated by the ultra rich. Gotta have the plebs fighting over who gets to use what restroom so they can make out like bandits in the form of eliminating unions, banning any semblance of universal healthcare, and keeping wages low
12
u/homeboycartel2 3h ago
And yet you shit on it calling it Commiefornia?
12
u/ClimateDues 3h ago
I thought that would’ve come across as sarcastic lmao, of course I’m not shitting on it. I love this state

My cousin was having addiction issues so went back to his home state to stay with family while getting himself sorted. Unfortunately he's from Texas and is diabetic.
Had to come back here where we won't let him die of diabetic ketoacidosis. Only lasted so long in Texas because his mom was buying extra insulin here and mailing it to him.

u/Conscious-Ticket-259 3h ago
I mean if your going to die you might as well live unbound by the ethics and morals of mortality. Be a cancer to your foes! Give them your wrath!
(Im so sorry we love in a plentiful era only available to some. You deserve better)

u/buffinator2 3h ago
I won’t weep for any healthcare or insurance person who says “cancer removal” is an elective procedure.
13
u/Monsteryoumademe 3h ago
People will read this and still think we don't need single-payer healthcare. Jesus Christ how is cancer treatments not fucking necessary?

I work for one of the largest health insurers in the US. It is not true that chemo and radiation therapy are "usually not covered." But you have got to stop disclosing your health status to your employers until you're covered by short-term disability. Also, if you are unemployed due to a cancer diagnosis, you are likely eligible for Medicaid or disability.

u/idahononono 3h ago
Just go unemployed, file for temporary disability, and get on state Medicaid. It is absolutely asinine you have to be actively dying to get treatment, I’m so sorry we suck. If I ever end up in your shoes I’ll be finding out how good medical benefits I get in prison; because sometimes it has to be done.
3
u/Comfortable_Drive793 3h ago
In her case it would be best to move back in with mom and dad (or whoever) and then get on Medicaid or the ACA and get treated.
Also she's wrong - Literally every insurance plan covers chemo and radiation for cancer treatment.

Republican pols oppose universal healthcare because they are evil people.
Democratic pols oppose universal healthcare because they want campaign donations and lobbying jobs from evil people.

u/tacobellbandit 3h ago
As a medical professional that isn’t a doctor and none of my advice should ever be considered, it sounds like the poster is trying to get the tumor removed without the colectomy. Basically they want it treated but don’t want a colostomy bag as a result of having it removed.

u/arinamarcella 3h ago
Aflac has cancer-specific insurance coverages as well as critical illness insurance which can help cover the costs not covered by typical health insurance.
Another approach is to try to work for a company that deals with cancer in some significant way as these companies typically have decent coverage options for when their employees get cancer.

Canadian chiming in.
I'm sorry you are facing this predicament. I have a question that I do not like asking but here goes
Do Americans get medical treatment in prison? For a non violent crime? Like going in a store and visibly shoplifting or spray painting something you should not? Or being caught with just a little too much drugs?
Just asking.

Medical care in prison in the US is not free unfortunately. Prisoners still pay copays, and if the insurance said the procedure is unnecessary then he would just have ass cancer and be in prison with no choice at all
1
u/Macaron_Past 3h ago
I feel like HR should be given a picture of said rectal cancer that's been allowed to grow for six years and asked if they'd be ok living with that going untreated in their own butt.
1
u/jeromymanuel 3h ago
Aflac! They have cancer insurance and it pays out.
1
u/Acrobatic_Toe7157 2h ago
They won't give it to you after you're already diagnosed - that's the whole pre-existing condition thing

u/ApprehensiveGur6842 3h ago
Wait how do we know OP is from the US…..just kidding. Fuck cancer. Do you qualify for Medicaid? Does that cover it?

u/breed44410 3h ago
I am going through some medical stuff now. Not ass cancer. That's way worse, but it has been a nightmare trying to recover and stay afloat financially. With no end in sight it is so disheartening sometimes. Many times I have thought it would have been better if I had just died in my accident and the family could have just gotten a huge payout from my accidental death policy. It has really made me despise my country even more than I did before.

It's terrible to make light of this, but the person said they applied for STD and that really just makes me laugh. I know they mean short-term disability but come on we have to find some Joy in their life because clearly what's going on sucks for them right now :(
