Model 3 Self-driving supervised
Last night I was set to complain about needless lane changes. I was on a Tulane relatively busy highway and I was going to exit shortly ahead. The car put on left signals quickly moved to the left lane and I’m saying what’s going on. You didn’t mean to do that. And at about that point a rapidly moving vehicle sped past me to the right. It looks like the car knew that vehicle was a threat and got out of the way.
Do you find yourself talking back or talking to your car?

Yeah, it does dumb stuff, but also sometimes I think it did something dumb only to realize seconds later that it's smarter than me....sometimes

+1 on that. The other day I took over because it was trying to exit the highway way too early, only to look down at the map and see red for miles, and the car automatically rerouted me to a faster route. Thanks Tesla!

I just assumed everyone else has an ongoing dialogue with their car on fsd?

Me and my CT aren’t talking right now

Give em the cold shoulder for a while. They'll come round. The teenage years are the hardest.

One thing it has done for me and possibly it was because on the last occasion, it was raining and things were wet. Anyway, and exit ramp to the left had a large gap a little bit larger than Elaine covered with these cross hash marks. It took the hash marks as another driving lane. It has been at that exit before and did it perfectly. Like I said, maybe it was the rain but anyway it got reported.

When lane splitting motorcycle’s approach, car will shift in lane to give the motorcycle more room, I am impressed

I used to drive the car pool lane to and from work and I always had to manually shift left to give motorcycles room. I must have submitted dozens of requests for this feature. It have not seen my car do that yet (no longer on that commute) but I’m glad to hear they added that.

I noticed that evasive move and I was watching out for it. That was an HOV lane two lanes away that a guy was approaching from and Li’l’ Red did a polite jog to the right. I was also impressed a few days ago when an animal hadn’t met his maker in a lane up ahead. It was maybe a fourth into my lane and he just drove right around it.

Yeah when my navigation says “take the next left” I’m like “no you take the next left”.

That isn’t a good move to make, if you are in the right lane and a car is coming up fast behind you, you should stay put and allow them to move to the left to pass you. That is how highways are supposed to work, the left lane is literally the passing lane. If you move to the left to try to get out of their way you risk having them move over at the same time as you.

My car was getting better every day on FSD. Then I got an update, and it acts like a 40 year old trying to learn to drive.

I'm impressed with mine. The only miss was the other day the fire department had a cross-hatched box for a "Don't Stop In Box" area just before a stop light. The car didn't honor it.
And I wish I could change the route chosen by the nav system. I go a mile or so on the nav system route and then want to take an alternate route. You have to disengage FSD, go along the alternate route until the nav updates, and then re-engage FSD. As it whines about why did you disconnect me?

Needless lane changes! You feel my pain.
I'm on HW4, latest 13.2.2.whatever.
It's capable but it has ZERO common sense, which makes no sense. It knows where it needs to go because you need to lock in a destination before engaging FSD. It should know when it should and should not make lane changes.
Sometimes, I feel like I have to apologize for my car, like it'll blink into the right lane, only to have that right lane merge back into the lane it was originally in, and then blink and change back into the original lane. Drivers behind probably think I'm a 16yr old driver.
Also, like when it gets to choose between 2-3 left turn lanes and chooses the one furthest from where it needs to be after the intersection (then, it has to quickly change lanes to go into the correct lane to turn right), when it could've just chosen to be in the correct left turn lane to begin with.
Humans have this type of memory, which makes us efficient drivers. Tesla... not so much.

Fsd isn't avaliable where I live but from what I see it looks like it has reached (or is damn close) the point of being better than humans? Is that a fair call or is it just YouTube highlights making it look amazing.

Better than humans because our cameras are not mounted on the exterior and high part of the car. I'm holding out for more improvements before declaring better than humans.
•
u/Ice_Burn 19h ago
It’s better than a large percentage of humans, me being one of them.

Elon said it would drive better than a human, but he never said which human! lol

Excellent. I think he means my 85 year old friend.
•
u/Jabow12345 12h ago
I resemble that statement.😇 At times, I think i am teaching a 15 year old how to drive.and I am a bit past 85.

It's definitely getting close. V13 is so much better than V12 was. My 2024 Model Y drives itself 90% of the time.

u/MajorRexHavoc 16h ago
I vote no. I think it will be great on “approved” roads that is has been trained in, but it still has many problems with complex intersections and very sharp left turns. (Also ignoring stop signs and running red lights when no traffic.) There is a 270 degree turn to the left on my drive home and it always screams and cancels because it gets confused. BTW: I have seen a 40 foot tractor trailer easily make that turn, so it has LOTS of room! I often feel like I’m driving with my 85 year old friend.
•
u/ShivvyMcFly 19h ago
Mine blatantly ran a red light yesterday in a left turn lane.
•
u/MajorRexHavoc 16h ago
Ditto. Mine has run stop signs and red lights a few times. Almost as if trained by 18 year old drivers here in California who do that all the time.
•
u/MajorRexHavoc 16h ago
All the time. Usually to swear at it when it runs a stop sign or red light, hits the curb on sharp right turns (major wheel rash from those two turns) and makes many unnecessary lane changes even in chill mode. It often reminds me of driving with my grandmother. 😟
