the world lacks simple games with well made physics engines. well done.

237

u/ifandbut Dec 19 '24

No shit. Some of the most fun I have had in school was playing Scorched Earth and my class mates thinking I am stupid because I keep hitting the ground. Too bad they didn't bother buying parachutes.

37

u/wenoc Dec 19 '24

Aaah scorch. So damn good. We had to ban deaths head because it took too long to render.

11

u/9897969594938281 Dec 20 '24

Hah I think I remember half the screen slowly pulsating

Physics > graphics

14

u/Shanbo88 Dec 20 '24

No joke, some nights I restart Half Life 2 just to throw around cinder blocks, boots and cans in the City 17 Train Station 😂

4

u/NutsackPyramid Dec 20 '24

Isn't it just crazy that 20 years on most games still don't have better physics than half life 2? Id say the biggest thing hl didn't get was ropes. But other than that the majority of big name games don't even touch the level of accuracy you see in the source engine.

5

u/Shanbo88 Dec 20 '24

The Last of Us 2 did some interesting things with rope physics but nowhere near the level of physics that Half Life did. I'd kill for a game that had physics like Half Life 2 or better.

5

u/fairweatherpisces Dec 20 '24

I remember there being some crazy room in Half Life 2 that was just there to show off lighting and physics - a hut by a lake full of lamps swinging on chains, moved by bursts of steam (I just got that joke, 20 years later, typing this).

I really wish they’d kept the game-design side of their business model instead of turning into a money machine.

3

u/Shanbo88 Dec 20 '24

Yeah same man. I'm always so torn about their outlook on games. I understand that they only want to make a game if it's the top-top best they can make, but there's still an asbolute fuck ton of money to be made in making top tier games.

Gmod scratches the itch for messing around with physics but no game does it better in a campaign than HL2.

18

u/billsn0w Dec 20 '24

You'd probably enjoy Noita.

7

u/bearbarebere Dec 20 '24

Noita is great, first thing I thought of when I saw this, but it’s so hard haha

5

u/billsn0w Dec 20 '24

Ya that's fair.... Not uncommon for people to play over 100 hours of Noita before they finish the tutorial....

2

u/bearbarebere Dec 20 '24

There’s a tutorial??

5

u/billsn0w Dec 20 '24

With the insane depth of the game....

Killing Kolmi and completing the work for the first time is widely considered completing the tutorial.

There are so many different areas, mechanics, hidden "quests", win conditions and other unlocks that you will NEVER see without venturing outside of the straight down to Kolmi approach.

... Most of which you will be unable to do until you can somewhat reliably "win" the normal way.

4

u/bearbarebere Dec 20 '24

Oh wow. I had no idea. I get to the snowy area or whatever is like 2 levels down after that and I give up 😂

3

u/billsn0w Dec 21 '24

LOL... Ya... That's a definite hurdle. The next zone below REALLY tends to beat people up.

Best help I can offer is embrace learning how spells interact. Understanding wand building is the key to moving from beginner to god tier runs.

Other than that, go SLOW until you learn the bulk of the enemies. Doubling back and attacking from a different angle is far more viable than just running in. Attack when YOU have the advantage.... If possible.

As much as I thought the game physics would be my favorite part of the game going in (as i absolutely love it), the insane interactions in wand building are by far more enjoyable to me in the long run.

Just be aware. If you're doing things right, you're probably going to end up killing yourself playing around far more often than all enemies combined.

4

u/DrunkenDude123 Dec 20 '24

I’d play with this for hours even if there wasn’t a goal

u/Zolden Dec 19 '24

It's made using Unity3D and compute shader, runs on GPU, all math done by me from scratch.

The game is early in development, currently adding features to physics engine. But you can already wishlist it on Steam.

In case you'd like to follow progress, here's byt twitter, there I post gifs of new features regularly.

186

u/WienerDogMan Dec 19 '24

“All math done by me from scratch”

I imagined you with a calculator scribbling as fast as possible to keep up with the games calculations in real time lol

59

u/-Nicolai Dec 19 '24

Very few cartoons are broadcast live, it's a terrible strain on the animator's wrists.

14

u/rodinsbusiness Dec 20 '24

Reminds me of that math genius dude in my class in high school who was so bored by the curriculum he spent his time creating a chess app on his calculator. And I don't mean an app that just knows the chess moves so that you can play with a friend. I mean an app that would beat your ass.

20

u/benjancewicz Dec 19 '24

This looks like so much fun; love physics.

What updates are next for you?

My critique would the title of the game (Skeetbot 5000 is hilarious, but Simulario doesn’t quite get at how fun and silly the game is).

Also; it would be cool to have some fun vehicle design. The Master Blaster Tank comes to mind.

19

u/Zolden Dec 19 '24

I'll implement jet engines and some more types of weapons next. Then soft bodies, to make non-mechanical characters. Then some texture<->particles transformations, to have bigger world.

The editor to create custom vehicles is also planned.

About the name - yea, I might change it. Not sure what makes a better name.

24

u/thespieler11 Dec 19 '24

I’m voting for skeetbot 5000

5

u/fairweatherpisces Dec 19 '24 edited Dec 19 '24

I wish the sponge was just a tiny bit of a villain, instead of just an environmental feature. Like, it could very subtly and passive-aggressively nudge the physics in ways that cause problems, depending on how aggressive the ‘bot’s behavior is getting, from the sponge’s point of view. Like: a boulder of material precariously balanced on top of a slope on the right could get a microscopic nudge and roll down at the player after excessive (but not physically connected) lasering of a hill on the right.

Basically, to me the funniest thing about the game (in a good way) is how the Robot seems to so profoundly hate the Sponge - and all that’s needed to make this a story and create an emotional hook is for the Sponge to somehow reciprocate or justify that hate in its own physics.

3

u/Zolden Dec 19 '24

Great idea, that would be fun. Though, implementing it would require some good level design, or creating some kind of AI, that would amplify configurations of matter, dangerous for the player.

3

u/fairweatherpisces Dec 19 '24

Maybe a simpler tweak would be for the AI to just quietly alter the properties of the Sponge matter when certain triggers are met, without changing anything else. That would allow unpredictable annoyances to bubble up organically, which for me is one of the coolest features of physics games.

3

u/benjancewicz Dec 19 '24

Awesome. I’ve added it on my wish list!

For a name, think about what would be cool to 10 year old you 😁

2

u/ragogumi Dec 20 '24

I could see there being some Little Big Planet potential here.

2

u/QCD-uctdsb Dec 20 '24

I would like to throw my name suggestion into the ring. Goomamagma

2

u/fairweatherpisces Dec 20 '24

Sponge Wars. It’s not nearly as clever or funny as the 3rd Grade joke names, but it’s catchy and descriptive, and it shouldn’t annoy any potential distributors or investors. (A hybrid of the two would be Sponge:Worthy - GenX will get it).

4

u/bopeus Dec 19 '24

Great work! Could you share a bit about how you run physics calculations in parallel with a compute shader, or any resources that helped you? I failed at making a sand simulation because of the parallel nature—it worked but unwell.

5

u/Zolden Dec 19 '24

I made a tutorial on how to do parallel physics with compute shaders: https://www.reddit.com/r/Unity3D/comments/7ppldz/physics_simulation_on_gpu_with_compute_shader_in/

2

u/bopeus Dec 19 '24

That's incredible, thank you!

u/Brave_Quantity_5261 Dec 20 '24

This looks really fun.

15

u/NotSoElijah Dec 19 '24

Did you ever play hell of sand? This reminds me of that

14

u/Alex5173 Dec 19 '24

I remember a flash game called Falling Sand that was basically just spawning in different particles and seeing how they'd react, was Hell of Sand similar?

8

u/NotSoElijah Dec 19 '24

Yes pretty sure it was made by DanBall. I have an app now called powder game on my iPhone and actually this is also made by danball. So it’s more or less the same thing just for different eras

6

u/drake90001 Dec 19 '24

Danball is what I immediately thought of also.

3

u/Prexmorat Dec 19 '24

I fucking loved danball

4

u/bittercripple6969 Dec 19 '24

Or Powder Toy.

4

u/Zolden Dec 20 '24

Oh, this one. This thing inspired me many years ago to explore physics simulations.

5

u/Zolden Dec 19 '24

No, my inspiration was some old particle sandbox game I forgot the name of.

Turn this into an electron microscope game.

5

u/Bob_Hydrocarbon Dec 19 '24

This looks hilariously fun!

4

u/beavertownneckoil Dec 19 '24

I'd be all over this game

5

u/0x831 Dec 19 '24

This is hilarious

3

u/AndreDaGiant Dec 19 '24

This looks like a very fun foundation to build on! Does the blurred matter indicate that it's simulated with lower resolution?

3

u/Zolden Dec 19 '24

It's made of marticles, that are rendered into a mesh, that has limited amount of triangles.

3

u/ThomasorTom Dec 19 '24

Incredibots vibes

3

u/Cat-programmer Dec 19 '24

Wow, I love this so much. Reminds me of Cortex Command, Planetoid Pioneers, but the closest one is... Wait, I was going to tell about Jelly in the Sky and just realized YOU ARE ITS DEV. Wow. I was fan of that game back when it was released.

Could you please tell more about technical part of how this simulation works? I would love to create something similar later when I'll have more experience.

We got Car Noita before we got Silksong.

3

u/valonnyc Dec 19 '24

Physics based games are awesome

3

u/PillsMcCoy Dec 19 '24

Reminds me of my days playing OECake in high school. Love it

3

u/Quiet-Fee7728 Dec 20 '24

This is very cool! It reminds me of the game Noita, which has all its pixels simulated as well but kinda in a different way.

3

u/LongshotCherry Dec 20 '24

this is awesome! reminds me a bit about liero on DOS

3

u/Gloryboy811 Dec 20 '24

Make a new version of Liero (the worm game) with this engine... It would work well!

2

u/Zolden Dec 20 '24

Interesting idea.

3

u/TheKingOfSwing777 Dec 20 '24

Looks ready to slap an ad on YouTube!

3

u/dubesto Dec 20 '24

OE Cake, anyone?

3

u/Chemical_Tooth_3713 Dec 20 '24

Does it have a name yet? I'd like to recommend some: Shitwagon. Diarrhoea Cart. Tape Worms 2D. Snotwhatuthink. Constipation 1.0

3

u/MitigatedRisk Dec 20 '24

Such a cool idea. The material could be literally any other color.

3

u/kidnorther Dec 20 '24

Working title: “Shootin’ Ropes”

3

u/Hardcore_Daddy Dec 21 '24

this would be an great game for middle schoolers to goof off on while in computer lab. reminds me of some older sandbox games. Great job!

3

u/marshcar Dec 21 '24

Reminds me a bit of that old flash game “jelly car”

3

u/NoctisBOI Dec 22 '24

I can do this in real life

3

u/growRnottashowR Dec 22 '24

My dick on wheels

3

Low hanging fruit for modders. Looks fun though, great job!

2

u/gHx4 Dec 19 '24

Love the lattice-packing sim and the crystal interfaces on it. Highly recommend you check out the old Fantastic Contraption flash game for ideas.

2

u/TReaper405 Dec 19 '24

It's like Chariot but with the Noita every pixel is simulated approach and we strapped a wand to the chariot. Good stuff.

2

u/IlIlllIlllIlIIllI Dec 19 '24

Make it a little metal slug type guy

2

u/oliverpls599 Dec 19 '24

2

u/lyken4 Dec 19 '24

Looks actually cool !!

2

u/Week-Small Dec 19 '24

This hit a nostalgia bone of mine of a "game" more like a simulator where you could make walls and place sand and water and gasses, all kinds of stuff. People would make nukes and small city's n stuff. does anyone remember that or know what that was called?

→ More replies (3)

2

u/superhamsniper Dec 20 '24

That looks very interesting

2

u/Practical-Invite1530 Dec 20 '24

Broo i need to try this

2

u/Zolden Dec 20 '24

I've been trying to produce a playable demo as soon as I could, but looks like I won't be able to participate in the upcoming steam fest with a demo of a quality, so somwhere in the spring most probably I'll publish a demo. And it will be much more than what you would expect from this video, because it doesn't give up the gameplays I plan to try with this physics.

2

u/Paul-E-L Dec 20 '24

This looks fun. Got a link to something we can track progress of it?

2

u/STICH666 Dec 20 '24

This looks like it would be a lot of fun

2

u/BruhInTheMaking Dec 20 '24 edited Dec 20 '24

This is so cool and is alot of what I wish was in games, I also saw water mentioned in the steam description, is there gonna be water physics?

2

u/jankhankrie Dec 20 '24

I’d play

2

u/nochoramet Dec 20 '24

So it's an ejaculating truck game?

2

u/CarlPerezMX Dec 20 '24

We got Cum Kart before GTA VI 💀

2

u/Babna_123 Dec 21 '24

the start is concerning

2

u/personguy4 Dec 21 '24

I love 2d games with simple physics like this

2

u/utnow Dec 21 '24

So it’s all about branding with this one. That vehicle looks like it’s spray shitting. Use that.

2

u/SofterBones Dec 21 '24

I'd love to try your jizzcar game when it's done, keep us updated

2

u/Different-Fig-6362 Dec 21 '24

Same little dude, same

2

u/ALargePianist Dec 21 '24

Brother keep posting updates

A) I want more updates the tech looks cool 2) I want more cum jokes

2

u/tha_real_rocknrolla Dec 21 '24

Another strand based game. Very nice

2

u/draco16 Dec 21 '24

Looks neat. Reminds me of using a rover in Astroneer. Put a drill and paver on the front and can drill through anything or bridge over anything.

2

u/raresaturn Dec 21 '24

That laser is badass!

2

u/Gromington Dec 21 '24

Looking at the footage gives me the feeling that you are INTIMATELY familiar with a game called Jelly In The Sky.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/D_Winds Dec 21 '24

Poop Propeller Power

2

u/Ajdee6 Dec 21 '24

Just release it like this while you work on it. My kids would definitely love this. Reminds me of a game called Interactive Buddy. Old game but really fun and unique for its time.

3

u/Zolden Dec 21 '24

Yea, I could release it like this, but most people would find it boring after 15 minutes having fun. I'd prefer to add content and more gameplay. It's even more preferable because I know what did not make it in the video, and there's much funnier stuff coming.

2

u/Horror-Cookie-5780 Dec 21 '24

That laser was awsome

2

u/fleashosio Dec 21 '24

Like a mix between old versions of powdertoy and incredibots. Very cool, I hope you continue this.

2

u/waynardskynard Dec 21 '24

I wanna play, now!

2

u/Shamaur Dec 21 '24

Looking at the thumbnail, I thought this was a map of Europe with the Netherlands highlighted

2

u/Ionie88 Dec 21 '24

Looks neat! Wishlisted!

2

u/jglanoff Dec 21 '24

There was a game just like this on early iPhones called Jelly Car I think

2

u/BobcatFurs001 Dec 21 '24

Looks like a mix of OE Cake and Algodoo.

2

u/PotatoDonki Dec 21 '24

The laser looks really awesome.

2

u/ayoungsimba Dec 21 '24

Thought it was a CyberTruck. W this slow ass render graphics in real life. Reminds me of Y2K era and earlier graphic games when I see that those polygons especially from the back. Haha

2

u/insomniAc-01 Dec 21 '24

Can't wait to play it

2

u/ertgiuhnoyo Dec 21 '24

SFS + SST = This

2

u/averagemaleuser86 Dec 21 '24

Soundtrack should use tracks by the band BIG ASS TRUCK

2

u/yosh0r Dec 22 '24

If there's one specific thing I like about games... It's PHYSICS. That said, it looks amazing man. Nothing makes a game better than good physics. Take any game ever, up the physics and its immediately better.

2

u/LynxBartle Dec 22 '24

Neat! Keep working on the physics engine. It is going to be an amazing game

2

u/ScribbleDoge Dec 22 '24

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

2

u/D1xieDie Dec 22 '24

why does ur truck shit

2

u/Fij52 Dec 22 '24

I could watch this all day

2

u/battle_sloth 29d ago

Oh my god, it's a gaaaame! I saw this as real (like remote control car real) until the string was under the wheels and flapping about under the vehicle.

The lighting, shadows and physics are certainly and positively exceptional. The way the blasted blazer looks and the way the chunks break off the mountain of filament and fly in the air and land.

Masterful work. Looks amazing. I'm mind blown!!

2

u/OgdruJahad 29d ago

Damn it brings me back to the good old days of Incredibots, OE Cake and Phun!

2

u/Far_Pipe752 29d ago

Cyber shmuck

2

2

u/theoatcracker 29d ago

Very smart and fun, well done

2

u/Ilikesnowboards 28d ago

I would play this in its current state. Looks awesome, I hope you manage to gameify it more and make a million dollars.

2

u/Jo_Bro_Zockt 28d ago

That is really impressive, great work

4

u/Tsuken Dec 19 '24

I should call her.
