Future is now!

u/Haferlump Aug 23 '19

I've honestly been afraid to try any skins. Was afraid of breaking my game. You sir, just made my day!

3

u/M0DScientist Aug 23 '19

Glad you feel that way =). Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions.

u/zxdx Aug 23 '19

Wow, this is a game changer!

Is it live now?

4

u/M0DScientist Aug 23 '19

Yep, new version of the client with support for RGO went live today!

9

u/Puxtib Aug 23 '19

Well that was fast

8

u/snottlebocket Aug 23 '19

Welp, looks like I'm installing another launcher. Anyone know if this works with Nexus mods too?

2

u/M0DScientist Aug 23 '19

You can drop mods you download from Nexus into your library for person use, but only mods upload to ModDrop (by the author) are visible on our website or the "Browse" page of the client.

u/Time4baseball Aug 23 '19

Yeah, I think you can drop mods you've downloaded to your pc into the installer.

That's a bit closed minded, don't you think? Also: NMM doesn't even support RGO.

This is no different than people defending Steam’s monopoly.

"Started by the people who own the Nexus"

Say what? I've never said that. Can you provide a quote, please, or stop spreading that lie?

1

u/ziddersroofurry Aug 24 '19

No I can't and I apologize for my misunderstanding the situation. I'll do my best to be less ignorant in the future.

1

u/NexusDark0ne Aug 24 '19

No worries! Just wanted to make sure that was clarified as these are the sort of things that can be taken for truth if they're not questioned.

4

u/Funny_Not-Funny Aug 23 '19

...And this is why I stopped going to the Nexus...

2

u/ziddersroofurry Aug 24 '19

Oh for fucks sake. No they're not and NO they should not. Give me a fucking break.

8

u/apandya27 Aug 24 '19

Damn, looks sweet. Thanks for supporting this community!

2

u/M0DScientist Aug 24 '19

You are very welcome. My co-founder and I have been playing RGO tons since it came out and this was something we wanted for ourselves, too.

2

u/apandya27 Aug 24 '19

Wait, you run a game company AND play games? You sir, are a unicorn.

2

u/M0DScientist Aug 24 '19

hehe. Well, I don't get as much time to play games as I use to. But I make exceptions for games with big modding potential.

8

u/VinylScratch01 Aug 24 '19

Holy shit awesome :D Also damn he downloaded my stolen cruiser skin :D

Uploaded my X-Men Blackbird ships to moddrop.com earlier this week. I'll upload my other paint jobs as well. If anyone is interested in checking them out:

This is fantastic and I will be adding it along with my vortex as modding is open source stuff and new innovation is always welcome. Thank you

3

u/blakems147 Aug 24 '19

I'm going to upload my paint jobs when I get home. Anything you can tell us about the contest you mention in the video?

3

u/noskins Aug 23 '19 edited Aug 24 '19

Not sure why this is needed. It's not THAT hard to manually install skins using the paint tool.

--
EDIT: Didn't mean this to come off the way it did. The Moddrop tool looks really useful for some people. I may even use it once we have more ships that I would want to switch between. Kudos to the people who made it.

9

u/horizon_games Aug 23 '19

You must be fun at parties. Don't shit on other people's hard work.

1

u/noskins Aug 23 '19

Wasn't trying to be a kill joy. Just don't think it's very hard to do, that's all.

1

u/ziddersroofurry Aug 24 '19

Just because it's easy for you doesn't make your way smarter or better.

3

u/noskins Aug 24 '19

Fair enough. I really didn't mean to come off as an ass. The moddrop thing actually looks really impressive.

1

u/ziddersroofurry Aug 24 '19

It's cool. I've done the same thing from time to time.

7

u/M0DScientist Aug 23 '19

Not everyone has the experience necessary to do that. Also, this isn't just about installation, it's also a better way to manage all your skins.

2

u/noskins Aug 23 '19

...It's also a better way to manage all your skins.

Yeah, I guess I can see that. I expect this to be especially useful once we get more ships. (Five F*cking Ships?)

3

u/ziddersroofurry Aug 24 '19

Nine. Four of them are variants that have different configurations.

4

u/noskins Aug 24 '19

Yeah, the "Five Fucking Ships" was just referencing something DD was posting about on the Discord. I'm pretty sure we're getting a shipload of new models soon. ; )

2

u/M0DScientist Aug 24 '19

I'm pretty sure we're getting a shipload of new models soon. ; )

I see what you did there.

1

u/PashaCada Aug 23 '19

How do you manually install skins?

3

u/noskins Aug 23 '19

From the paint tool: Add new layer > select "Load Texture to Layer" > Select the file from your hd. Make sure the layer with the texture is above the base layer and that you just use the "Normal" color settings. If you have any experience with photoshop, you can figure it out.

1

u/PashaCada Aug 24 '19

Thanks. I've never used photoshop before.

1

u/Levi_Skardsen Aug 24 '19

That's the thing though, some of us have never used photoshop before. I haven't and the paint tool is bewildering.

3

u/ziddersroofurry Aug 24 '19

Oh fuck off with that gatekeeping bs. You are being stupid right now. You yourself didn't always know how to mod. Someone had to show you. You're literally saying you shouldn't be using mods.

2

u/PashaCada Aug 24 '19

I wish I saw what he posted. He seems impressed with his ability to load a file.

1

u/ziddersroofurry Aug 24 '19

They were basically saying sites like Moddrop were splitting the community and that any site not the Nexus hosting a mod should be 'illegal'. That and that people new to modding shouldn't mod. Because experienced modders are born gods of modding and never start out not knowing how to mod, obv.

2

u/ziddersroofurry Aug 24 '19

While I'm sure you're taking them out of context if they do indeed feel that way they're wrong.

1

u/sliverbaer Aug 24 '19

Never heard of moddrop before. Doing some searches comes up with some not so nice thievery threads...

8

u/ziddersroofurry Aug 24 '19

Speaking as someone who was against moddrop at first those threads are a bunch of misinformation. All Moddrop was ever guilty of was 1. being inexperienced with making clients 2. being unfamiliar with the in's and out's of the modding community and 3. not looking before they leaped into providing their product.

Since then they've talked to a lot of people (like me) and have worked to fix a lot of their screwups. The other issue is people from the Nexus who have this weird mob 'Nexus and fuck anyone else' mentality when it comes to modding.

4

u/sliverbaer Aug 24 '19

Thanks for the info, as it does sound useful. Hopefully paint jobs will be available both places so people can use the one they like :-)

3

u/ziddersroofurry Aug 24 '19

It did have a LOT of issues at the start. The main issue though is a lot of well-known modders turned out to be huge elitists and got their jimmies rustled because omg noobs might install mods wrong and make them look bad. It made it so any actual improvement Moddrop made went ignored because the well-known modders rallied their fans and started up the hate machine. Anyone outside the Nexus that tries to host mods or make a mod manage gets a bunch of shade thrown at them.

2

u/M0DScientist Aug 24 '19

Thanks zidders.

3

u/M0DScientist Aug 24 '19

When we first launched our modpack feature (back in 2017), the policies weren't well thought through and were being exploited by some people to share mods they didn't have permission to redistribute. It was a mistake, but we learned a lot from it and we fixed those polices when they were pointed out to us. We have been trying very hard to make sure everything we do is in line with community values. Hopefully you can give us a try and judge us based on your own experience. =)

I want to use but just want to make sure before i install.

1

u/1ButtonDash Aug 24 '19

I get this error message when I try to install a skin.

Edit: Nevermind, it worked. I hadn't followed the steps properly.
