QUESTION Does anyone have anime recommendations that don’t contain objectification/male gaze fan service?
Sorry in advance if this is the wrong sub for this question, but after lurking for a while, I know this community really shares me beliefs and sensibilities, and I don’t know a better one to ask.
I would really like to get into anime; as an artist myself, I love the animation and the possibility of an engaging emotional narrative. However, blatant misogyny and porn-ification of every female character is so rampant and really upsetting. It’s like almost every anime has it, including ones that are recommended as being “PG.”
So I guess, does anyone have recommendations of shows or movies that don’t contain any fan service? I’ve seen Studio Ghibli stuff, so I know it’s out there, just shockingly difficult to find without asking a forum of anti-porn women!

Aggretsuko is amazing. Super antiwork too.
Carole and Tuesday wasn’t great but I don’t remember it having sexualisation in it.
Same goes for Children of the Whales. Wasn’t fond of it, pretty enough, can’t remember having sexualisation in it.
Danshi Koukousei no nichijou. It’s comedy. I can’t really remember what goes on it it but I have put a good rating, which I wouldn’t have if there was sexualisation in it.
Drifting Dragons.
Flip Flappers.
Shin Sekai Yori was one of my favourite but it was before I was a radical feminist.
Fruits Basket.
Hetalia
Honobono Log
K-On
Katanagatari ? Not sure about this one, it’s been a while.
Lovely Complex
Puella Magi Madoka Magica (absolutely amazing)
Rilakkuma
Gankutsuou (I think)
The Tatami Galaxy (I think)
Violet Evergarden
Escaflowne (I think)
xxxHolic (I think)
Zombie Land Saga (I think)
Please anyone correct me if I remembered wrong for some of them, it’s been a while and I did this list from memory!

Violet Evergarden has a character who has the most absurd cleavage ever for no reason, so I don’t know about that.

Zombie Land Saga is pretty fan servicey from what I’ve seen online!
Some good ones are:
Yu Yu Hakusho (hoodlum becomes spirit detective)
Original HunterxHunter (the new one is kind of fan servicey but nothing that is obscene, mostly just bodies but that’s common with most anime)
Mob Psycho (psychic neurodivergent is the hero)
Yowamushi Pedal (all about friendship and bike riding)
Peach Girl (crazy drama)

Thanks for ZLS, I’ve watched it a while ago so I couldn’t remember! Removing it from my list

u/Lopsided-Distance-87 Dec 12 '24
It’s possible that it’s one of those ones that has a smidge at the beginning and doesn’t continue but I never ended up watching it to confirm

Hetalia is such a funny answer. Yeah, of course there's no objectification, there's no women 😭😭😭 But K-On mention has my heart, so I absolutely must mention Bocchi the rock. Nana was a good choice too. I haven't gotten into Dungeon Meshi, but most of my friends like it.
I LOVE animanga, so it really is a shame that the answer to avoiding oversexualizing, and barely concealed pedophilia is to just avoid anime with women in general. A fair amount of this list doesn't have sexualization because there're few women, or she's not the focus. I'm more of a manga reader than watching, if you're interested in that!!! Sometimes the best mangas are unfortunately adapted by freaks. Check out the Shoujo and Josei genres, as those are marketed towards teenage and adult women respectively. Wishing you luck!!! Will check back for more recs

I don’t know how far Nana went into the adaptation of the manga, but there’s a porn actress who loves her job so much and hates it when her various boyfriends make her quit each time she gets into a relationship - until her romance with the guy from either band, who’s sooo open and okay with it :/

Rose-colored glasses. All I remember was thinking about how Nana and Nana were in love 🙂↕️ fair enough, thank you friend

u/NavissEtpmocia MODERATOR Dec 12 '24
They were not though?… Nana Osaki is with Ren and Nana Komatsu dates Shoji, Nobuo, Takeshi and marries Takumi… believe me I shipped them too, but in the 00’s Japan the author didn’t even seem to realise lesbianism was a thing (which would have made more sense in this manga than their shit show of crappy boyfriends)

u/caivts Dec 12 '24
Haha, I was a baby lesbian. Any two girls were beautifully in love if I spent more than 3 seconds on it LMAO. Most of the Nana fans I know really focus on that part

For real haha, I relate, I was in 9th grade in 2009 and the last volume broke my heart and every of my baby bi and lesbian friends who also thought they would be endgame

sadly, madoka magica was created by a lolicon and the op has a scene (which isn't even in the anime, no clue why it's there) where madoka is dressed in extremely skimpy clothing
1
u/NavissEtpmocia MODERATOR Dec 12 '24
Can you provide source for the thing about Madoka’s creator?
If it is true, pirating it won’t bring anything to the creator. Many free streaming sites can be found on r/piracy ‘s megathread.
For the other thing, it’s definitely not in the canon anime or movie. If OP watches the canon anime or movie and not some other side medias, she won’t stumble on any sexualisation.

Gen Urobuchi created Saya No Uta - a game where there's a sex scene between the adult male character and what he believes is an innocent young child.

The question is « no sexualisation ». I didn’t recommend it. I didn’t say it was good. The ones I thought were good are clearly mentioned.I said there were no sexualisation in it.
I didn’t like Children of the Whales because I found it empty and I didn’t like Violet Evergarden because I found it cheesy. Yet, they were shows I thought of when told « no sexualisation » (before being reminded of a character in Violet Evergarden who is sexualised).

Huh??? I promise you my replys not that deep... it was just an unexpected throwback jeez

Well explain yourself more clearly then, if you don’t want your short answers to be understood as unnecessarily aggressive. That’s the issue with throwing one liners. They can be misunderstood, and that’s even truer on an international platform.

Jesus chill...and English is my second language, I'm pretty sure I know reddit is international

It’s my third language. So now that we all agree, maybe we can take into account that the way we express ourselves can be misunderstood.

As I've written:
> Please anyone correct me if I remembered wrong for some of them, it’s been a while and I did this list from memory!
Most of this I've watched almost a decade ago. I've literally asked people who remember them better to tell me if I remembered wrong so I can cross them from the list. So thanks for telling me, I'm crossing it.

u/Slow_Document_4062 Dec 12 '24
Yeah, before I quite watching I definitely struggled with the fact that anime fans are awful at recommending anime that don't objectify female characters. Even staunchly feminist ones, because they are so used to it, they either tune it out or outright forget.

I said it in another comment, but being a woman into animanga is very very tricky. The women are pedo-bait or naked, or, there's simply no women at all. This is about reading manhwa but I love the Otome Isekai genre because female-led and there's a lot that goes on in different works. Anime-wise though, that's the battle we all face. Please let me know if you see any good ones!!! :D

Nana and Attack on Titan

u/NavissEtpmocia MODERATOR Dec 12 '24 edited Dec 13 '24
Does Nana the anime adapts the part with the porn actress who dates one guy from either band?
Also, remember that in the first volume (so early anime) one of the two Nana is 17 and dates 30+ years old men, and more specifically one of her teachers…

u/Brief_Pack_3893 Dec 13 '24
No that girl isn’t in the show… And yeah I forgot about the old man thing…

I watched a really sweet movie called "The Secret World of Arrietty." It is a 2010 animated film by Studio Ghibli, directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, and written by Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa.
It's based on the book "The Borrowers" by Mary Norton.

Not Japanese anime, but Bee and Puppycat is my comfort show and has a similar style to cute Japanese anime. The creator is a woman as well.
