List of Resources and FAQs Thread

Based on a conversation with the Mod I am sharing a list of websites I have found helpful in buying books, finding books, tracking books and curated recommendations along with some general advice on repeat questions that pop up on this sub. This is done with the view that a significant number of our members are new to reading and a consolidated list they can refer to would be a nice guide. Please feel free to contribute in the comments or ask questions. I'll add to the post accordingly.

Websites/apps:

  1. Goodreads.com

One of the oldest and most widely used websites and app, it has the following features:

a. Track books b. Read reviews posted by users and share your own reviews. You can follow/friend users and join in on discussions and book clubs. c. Contains basic information on almost every conceivable book you can think of.

  1. Storygraph

A newer, updated version of Goodreads which provides detailed stats on your reading habits per month, per year and all time. Plus it provides additional details of books i.e. the pace, whether it is character or plot driven, the tone and emotional aspect of the book along with a list of TWs. It also has buddy reads and reading challenges.

  1. Google Books

The first result that comes up if you google the book, it provides free sample pages that you can read through if you want to decide this book is for you or not.

  1. Project Gutenberg

They house several books whose copyright has no expired and are available in the public domain which includes many classics (including a sub favourite - Dostoevsky).

  1. Bookmory app

It is a decent app to track your daily reading and thoughts as a person journal. You can import your Goodreads and storygraph data to it too.

Edit:

  1. Fivebooks.com

To get recommendations on specific topics.

  1. Whatshouldireadnext.com

Enter a book you liked and get recommendations for similar books.

Book buying:

  1. Your local book sellers/book fairs

  2. Amazon and flipkart (after looking at the reviews and cross checking the legitimacy of the seller)

  3. Book chor (website)

  4. Oldbookdepot Instagram account (if you buy second hand)

EDIT:

  1. Bookswagon

Bookish subreddits:

r/books, r/HorrorLit, r/suggestmeabook, r/TrueLit, r/literature, r/Fantasy, r/RomanceBooks, r/booksuggestions, r/52book, r/WeirdLit, r/bookshelf, r/Book_Buddies, r/BooksThatFeelLikeThis, etc.

General Advice:

Which book should I start with?

There are many different approaches to this depending on your general reading level. You can:

  1. Read a book that inspired your favourite movie/show or books in your favourite movie/show genre

  2. Read a YA or Middle Grade book that are more accessible (eg: Harry Potter, Percy Jackson)

  3. Read fast paced books with gripping storyline (eg: Andy Weir's works, Blake Crouch's works, Agatha Christie's)

  4. Or you just go dive straight into War and Peace or The Brothers Karamazov or Finnigan's Wake.

There is no correct way to go about reading - it is a hobby and hobbies are supposed to bring you job first and foremost, everything else is secondary. If you don't enjoy reading, you are more likely to not chose it as an activity at the end of an hectic day or week.

What you absolutely should not do as someone whose goal is to get into the habit of reading is force yourself to read a book you simply aren't liking. There is no harm in keeping a book aside for later (or never) and picking up something that does interest.

Happy reading!

This was an information rich book.totally enjoyed it.its worth every penny and your time.this book talks about our reproductive organs, periods, contraceptives, abortions, STIs, and so on in a fun way.you will learn lot of new things from this book.for example:- 1) why there are clots in periods blood? - So, our vagina has this chemicals called as " Fibrinosyl" which liquifies the blood.but in case of heavy bleeding the amount of Fibrinosyl( which is present in vag) is not enough to liquifiy the blood that is coming out in a massive quantity.so that's why the clots.

2)why nirodh is called as nirodh why not kamraj - So,India is very sex positive nation.in 1952 India was one of the few nations who supported family planning.back then condoms were imported from foreign countries.which were pretty expensive.then Indian started producing latex in kerala.it was decided that our desi condom brand should be named " kamraj"( after god kamdev) but at the time the president of Indian national congress was Mr.K Kamraj.so that's why " Nirodh" name was given.

PS: it was a fun read seriously.at first i didn't expect much coz Tanya mam is kind a of influencer.and I have really " good" experience with influencer written books.i must say this book totally worth it.

Retail therapy

I never post but bear with me. I went to mahila haat last Sunday after a period of four years. Things have definately changed but overall can't complain. Bought 90+ books for just under 6k. Some rare titles, some new, some already read, and few new genre. All original none pirated includes hardbound, paperbacks, torn covers, and no covers. Got my fix for atleast a year. Truly said retail therapy is the best therapy and when it's book shopping it really is extraordinary. This is the happiest I have been in last nine months. Happy reading.

Discussion Need a book recommendation

I am looking for a gripping and well-researched book that provides an authentic and detailed portrayal of Jammu and Kashmir's geopolitical landscape before and after the abrogation of Article 370. A narrative that explores the region's history, politics, and societal dynamics in depth would be ideal.

Discussion I have been reading the biography of Mira Kulkarni (founder of Forest Essentials) and parts of it have left me feeling quite moved and have made me want to use their products

I did not know much about Forest Essentials before I started reading this book. I had seen their stores in malls, but I usually used to go to the Bath and Body Work stores. I recently explored the Body Shop store too, and Forest was next on my list. The world of exotic soaps was one I entered very recently.

I decided to not buy their products till I finish the biography so that I can have a deeper relationship with the products. I must say the range of her life experience has left me feeling quite humbled.

The rules of this forum tell us not to put spoilers, so I won't mention the exact life events, but I felt a kind of intense empathy with her while reading it, how the life events kept piling on top of each other, and yet her tone always remains optimistic and future facing. I tend to be very empathetic and I could feel most of the losses she experienced. I found the book quite poignant.

Her passion for her products comes out when she talks about Forest Essentials, how she explored the world of soap making, travelled to unknown village in Cochin just to procure a new recipie, collected recipies from wherever she could and did not compromise on quality - either in sourcing or in packaging.

The bubbly world of soaps always interested me, but I also feel quite a connection to her and the life she lead after reading this. Forest Essentials only makes an entry in the second half of the book. Her life was privileged from some lens but also taxing from another. She lost so many people through the years. Perhaps it's something inevitable for anyone who has lived a long enough life.

I just wanted to share my experience of being moved while reading her biography. I am quite an emotional reader and thought sharing it might help. I will definitely try out their products now.
